Abstract
INTRODUCTION Insomnia and vasomotor symptoms are frequently experienced during the menopausal transition and in postmenopause, worsening sleep maintenance and quality of life. Our study evaluated the use of lavender essential oil and sleep hygiene guidance on quality of life, sleep patterns and self-reported hot flashes in postmenopausal women with insomnia diagnosis. METHODS This study is part of a larger experimental, double-blind, randomized controlled trial. We included 35 postmenopausal women with a diagnosis of insomnia who were distributed in two groups: A Placebo group (sunflower oil) and an Aroma group (Lavandula angustifolia essential oil); both inhaled the oils before bedtime for 29 days. The groups received sleep hygiene guidelines and weekly follow-up. Validated questionnaires were used to assess the effect of the intervention, and a sleep diary was used to assess sleep onset latency (SOL), total sleep time (TST), and sleep efficiency (SE) daily. Participants who complained of vasomotor symptoms at baseline kept a daily record of their frequency and intensity. RESULTS All participants benefited in almost all domains of quality of life and in the self-assessed TST and SE. The Aroma group achieved a significant improvement in their overall quality of life score over time. No differences were observed in respect of the hot flashes record and daytime sleepiness. CONCLUSIONS The aromatherapy intervention was effective in improving the overall quality of life in the Aroma group. Moreover, the sleep diary and sleep hygiene instructions helped all participants to, respectively, self-assess and improve their sleep patterns.

Abstract
Postmenopause is defined retrospectively after 12 consecutive months of amenorrhea. It represents the end of the reproductive period and ovarian failure. A decrease in estrogen leads to several changes in the short and long term. Among the early changes, vasomotor symptoms (hot flashes) are particularly common, occurring in about 70% of women. In addition, there are changes in mood, anxiety, depression, and insomnia. Insomnia occurs in almost 60% of postmenopausal women. Psychosocial aspects may also affect sleep. Proper diagnosis may lead to adequate treatment of sleep disturbances during menopause. Hormonal or other complementary therapies can improve sleep quality.

Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the effects of nonpharmacological interventions on perimenopausal and postmenopausal women with sleep problems. Eight databases (MEDLINE/PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, CINAHL, and four Korean databases) were searched, from their inception through to 30 November 2021, for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the effects of nonpharmacological interventions versus control conditions on sleep quality and insomnia in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the severity of insomnia was assessed using the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). In the meta-analysis, corrected standardized mean differences (SMDs; Hedges' g) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated as effect measures by applying the random effects model and inverse variant method. Fifteen trials met our inclusion criteria. Nonpharmacological interventions were found to have positive effects on sleep quality, measured with the PSQI (SMD = -1.32; 95% CI = -1.78 to -0.86; p < 0.001), and on the severity of insomnia, measured using the ISI (SMD = -1.11; 95% CI = -1.82 to -0.41; p = 0.002), compared with the control groups. Among perimenopausal and postmenopausal women with sleep problems, nonpharmacological interventions improved sleep quality and reduced the severity of insomnia.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to observe the clinical effects and brain electrical potential changes following acupuncture in the treatment of insomnia patients with mood disorders. Ninety patients with insomnia who met the inclusion criteria were randomly divided into the active acupuncture group (AA group, n = 44) and sham acupuncture group (SA group, n = 46) at a ratio of 1:1. The primary outcome was the total score of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the secondary outcomes were the total effective rate, Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) scores, and values of steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEP). The two groups received acupuncture or sham acupuncture 10 times (2 weeks). Finally, the total PSQI scores of the AA group and SA group were significantly different (p < 0.05) at 2 weeks (6.11 ± 2.33 vs. 10.37 ± 4.73), 6 weeks (6.27 ± 1.39 vs. 11.93 ± 3.07), 18 weeks (6.32 ± 2.84 vs. 11.78 ± 2.95) and 42 weeks (8.05 ± 3.14 vs. 12.54 ± 2.81). Further analysis found that AA group patients received acupuncture treatment at any age after the same effect (p > 0.05). The SAS and SDS scores of the AA group were also significantly different from those of the SA group at each assessment time point (p < 0.05). The total effective rate of the AA group was 81.82%, while that of the SA group was 30.43% (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between the AA group and SA group only in the brain potential of the parietal lobe (F4), left temporal lobe (C3) and right temporal lobe (T8) (P > 0.05), but there was a significant difference between other brain regions (P < 0.05). In addition, correlation analysis showed that there was a certain positive correlation between the total PSQI score, SAS score, efficacy level, and SSVEP value in the AA group as follows: C4 and the total PSQI score (r = 0.595, P = 0.041), F3 and SAS score (r = 0.604, P = 0.037), FPz and efficiency level of the frontal lobe (r = 0.581, P = 0.048), and O2 and efficiency level of the occipital lobe (r = 0.704, P = 0.011). Therefore, acupuncture have a good clinical effect on patients with insomnia and emotional disorders and have a significant regulatory effect on abnormally excited brain potentials.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Hypertension patients often suffered from insomnia problems which lowered the quality of life. Studies have shown that acupuncture is effective to treat perimenopausal and cancer-related insomnia. However, there is a lack of randomized controlled trials to support the effectiveness of acupuncture on insomnia of hypertension patients. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This study is a randomized, double-blind (patients and evaluators), and placebo-controlled clinical trial to investigate the effect of acupuncture in hypertension patients' insomnia management. We will recruit 158 hypertension patients suffering from insomnia in Bao'an People's Hospital, Shenzhen and randomly assign them into treatment group (antihypertensive drugs + acupuncture) and control group (antihypertensive drugs + sham acupuncture) in a 1:1 ratio. The patients will receive acupuncture 3 times a week for 12 weeks, and then a 6-months follow-up will be conducted after the treatment. The primary outcome is the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. The secondary outcomes include sleep parameters, blood pressure dropping, sleeping pill dosage, Rating Depression Scale score, and Self-Rating Anxiety Scale score. The primary outcome will be evaluated at baseline, 4, 8, and 12 weeks, and 1, 3, and 6 months following the end of treatment. The secondary outcomes will be assessed at baseline and 12 weeks of the treatment period.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES To evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture at HT 7 (Shenmen) and KI 7 (Fuliu) on sleep and comorbid symptoms for chronic insomnia. METHODS AND DESIGN A randomized, single-blind, parallel and sham-controlled trial consisted of an acupuncture group (n = 41) and a sham acupuncture group (n = 41). Setting: a tertiary hospital of integrated Chinese and Western medicine. Participants: 82 subjects with chronic insomnia based on the International Classification of Sleep Disorders, Third Edition (ICSD-3). Interventions: a 10-session acupuncture treatment at bilateral HT 7 and KI 7 or sham acupoints with shallow needling was performed over 3 weeks. Measurements: the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) and insomnia severity index (ISI) were evaluated at baseline, posttreatment, and at two follow-ups as the primary outcome measures. Polysomnography (PSG) on two consecutive nights, the Beck anxiety inventory (BAI), the Beck depression inventory (BDI) fatigue severity scale (FSS) and the Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS) were evaluated at baseline and posttreatment as the secondary outcome measures. RESULTS After the treatments, PSQI scores decreased by 5.04 in the acupuncture group and 2.92 in the sham acupuncture group. ISI scores decreased by 7.65 in the acupuncture group and 5.05 in the sham acupuncture group. The between-group differences in the primary outcome measures posttreatment were statistically significant. However, no differences were found between the two groups during the two follow-ups. Regarding the PSG data, there were significantly lower levels of sleep onset latency (SOL), a lower percentage of sleep stage N1 and a higher percentage of sleep stage N3 in the acupuncture group than in the sham acupuncture group. After treatment, there were lower levels of comorbid symptoms (BAI, BDI, FSS and ESS) in both groups. However, no significant differences were observed between the groups. CONCLUSION Acupuncture at HT 7 and KI 7 is an effective and safe nonpharmacologic intervention option for chronic insomnia. Abstract
This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture on the sleep structure of patients with insomnia, so as to provide a valuable basis for the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of insomnia. We conducted searches based on MeSH terms and free words in Cochrane Library, PubMed, Web of science, CKNI (China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database), WanFang Database, and Chongqing VIP Information from the inception of these database until 10 July 2020 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that investigated acupuncture treatment in patients with insomnia, and pertinent details of the results were saved. Comprehensive analysis showed that: (1) compared with the Western medicine groups, the acupuncture groups showed significant advantages in reducing the percentage of N1 sleep stage and N2 sleep stage, as well as increasing that of N3 sleep stage and REM sleep stage. However, no significant difference was found in increasing the effective rate, reducing total PSQI score, improving the total sleep time, reducing sleep latency, and improving sleep efficiency between the Western medicine groups and the acupuncture groups. (2) Compared with the sham acupuncture groups, the acupuncture treatment showed advantages in increasing the effective rate, reducing Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score, increasing the total sleep time, and improving sleep efficiency. However, no significant difference was observed between the sham acupuncture groups and the acupuncture groups with regard to reducing sleep latency, the percentage of N1 sleep stage and N2 sleep stage, as well as increasing that of N3 sleep stage and REM sleep stage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As a common symptom of perimenopausal period, perimenopausal insomnia brings great pain to many women and families. Acupuncture has been accepted by people as the incidence rate of this disease increases. The purpose of this study is to systematically compare the safety and efficacy of various acupuncture treatments for perimenopausal insomnia through network meta-analysis. METHODS We will search Web of Science, PubMed, The Cochrane Library, Embase, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wan Fang Date, VIP database, conference papers and grey literature. All relevant Randomized controlled trial (RCT) using acupuncture for perimenopausal insomnia will be included. Two reviewers will independently search and screen date. Network meta-analysis will be completed by Stata and WinBUGS software. RESULTS This study will compare the efficacy and safety of different acupuncture treatments for perimenopausal insomnia. CONCLUSION The result of this study will provide reliable evidence for evaluating the efficacy and safety of acupuncture in the treatment of perimenpausal insomnia. Abstract
Menopause-related symptoms are common problems of middle-aged women that can seriously affect their quality of life. Menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) for climacteric symptoms is the first choice recommended by the International Menopause Society and likewise by other societies and institutions covering this field. However, non-hormonal therapies can be an alternative effective option, especially for women who are not suitable for MHT. Acupuncture is one of the most important methods. With deepening experience of the use of traditional Chinese acupuncture and moxibustion in the improvement of menopause symptoms, more clinical evidence has been obtained to support the effectiveness and safety of this treatment concept that is very often used in China. This review summarizes the evidence for effective treatment of climacteric complaints by acupuncture in recent years, shares the clinical experience of the authors of this review, all of whom head or work in units with daily large numbers of outpatients, and includes, in particular, results from studies performed in the Department of Acupuncture--Moxibustion of Tsinghua University Chuiyangliu Hospital, Beijing, China. In addition, there is a summary about the safety of acupuncture treatment in traditional Chinese medicine.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the short- and long-term effects of acupuncture on perimenopausal insomnia (PMI) and quality of life. PATIENTS AND METHODS We designed a semi-standardized, patient-blinded, randomized placebo-controlled trial. A total of 84 patients were recruited, all of whom met the criteria for diagnosis of PMI. Either acupuncture therapy or a noninvasive placebo acupuncture therapy designed to treat insomnia was implemented 18 times over the course of 8 weeks (3 times per week for 4 weeks, twice per week for 2 weeks, once per week for 2 weeks). The primary outcome was the change in Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores from baseline to the end of treatment, week 8. Secondary outcomes included climacteric symptoms and quality of life measured by the Menopause Quality of Life (Men-QoL), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), sleep parameters recorded in the actigraphy and adverse events. The PSQI and Men-QoL were assessed at weeks 0, 4, 8, 12 and 20. Other assessments were performed at week 0 and week 8. RESULTS The participants were randomly assigned to either acupuncture (n=42) or sham acupuncture (n=42) groups. The mean difference from baseline of PSQI score at the end of treatment between real acupuncture and sham acupuncture group was -2.38 (95% CI, -3.46 to -1.30; P<0.001). The acupuncture group was associated with significantly lower scores than the sham acupuncture group at week 12 and during the 20-week follow-up visits (all P <0.001). Acupuncture was also associated with significantly higher quality of life in vasomotor and other physical dimensions (all P <0.001). At the end of treatment, researchers found a significantly higher total sleep time (TST), sleep efficiency (SE) and lower number of average awakenings (AA) (P =0.007 0.023 and 0.011, respectively) in the acupuncture group than in the sham acupuncture group. No severe adverse events were reported. CONCLUSION The findings suggest that acupuncture may be a safe and effective treatment for PMI and improving quality of sleep in patients with menopause and could have a long-lasting effect. Abstract
Many symptoms of menopause may contribute to poor sleep and insomnia. These symptoms may also be associated with anxiety and affect the quality of women’s lives. The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a polarity therapy on insomnia and anxiety for women aged 40 to 60 years old. Forty-seven women participated in this experimental study. The participants were randomly assigned to the experiment group (n = 25)—receiving 4 sessions on polarity—or to the control group (n = 22)—receiving information on healthy sleep habits. Data were collected during the pre-test and the post-test using the Morin Insomnia Severity Index and the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (FormY). A significant difference was found between the groups and the measurement time with respect to insomnia scores (F = 28,66 ; p < 0,0001) and anxiety scores (F = 14.14; p < 0.0001). Women who received the polarity intervention showed a significant decrease in the severity of their insomnia and of their state of anxiety compared to those in the control group during post intervention. The polarity intervention was effective in reducing the women’s symptoms of insomnia and anxiety in the middle-aged women.

Abstract
Background The National Institutes of Health estimates the prevalence of insomnia in menopausal women at 40–50%. Some studies have shown that acupuncture might be effective in treating primary insomnia and insomnia related to depression and stroke. Although there are some programs supporting insomnia during the menopausal transition, there are few randomized controlled trials (RCT) to provide evidence regarding their effectiveness. We design a RCT of suitable sample size to verify the effectiveness of acupuncture in patients with insomnia during the menopausal transition and to form an optimized acupuncture treatment protocol. Method/Design In this randomized, single-site, single-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 84 eligible patients will be recruited and randomly assigned to either the acupuncture group (n = 42) or the sham control group (n = 42) in a 1:1 ratio. Participants will receive a total of 18 treatment sessions for eight consecutive weeks. Treatments will be given three times per week in the first four weeks, twice a week for the next two weeks, and finally once weekly for the final two weeks. Treatment will utilize eight main acupoints (GV20, GV24, GV29, RN6, RN4, SP6, HT7, EX-HN22) and extra two acupoints based on syndrome differentiation. The primary outcome will be assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The secondary outcomes will be measured by sleep parameters recorded in the Actigraphy (SE, TST, SA), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), and Menopause Quality of Life (Men-QOL). The primary outcomes will be assessed at baseline, week 4, week 8, and the first and third month after the end of treatment. Discussion If the results confirm that acupuncture is effective and safe for the treatment on insomnia in menopausal women, this positive outcome could provide evidence for clinical application. Abstract
Objective Up to 62% of perimenopausal women have depression symptoms. However, there is no efficacy treatment. The aim of this study is to compare the clinical efficacy and safety of EA therapy and escitalopram on perimenopause women with mild-moderate depressive symptom. Method A multicenter, randomized, positive-controlled clinical trial was conducted at 6 hospitals in China. 242 perimenopause women with mild-moderate depressive symptom were recruited and randomly assigned to receive 36 sessions of EA treatment or escitalopram treatment. The primary outcome measure was the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-17). The secondary outcome measures include menopause-specific quality of life (MENQOL) and serum sexual hormones which include estrogen, follicle-stimulating hormone, and luteinizing hormone. Results 221 (91.3%) completed the study, including 116 in the EA group and 105 in the escitalopram group. The baseline levels of demographic and outcome measurements were similar in the two groups. In the intervention period, there was no difference between two groups. However, in the follow-up, both HAMD-17 and MENQOL were significantly decreased, and at week 24 the mean differences were -2.23 and -8.97, respectively. There were no significant differences in the change of serum sexual hormones between the two groups. No serious adverse events occurred. Conclusion EA treatment is effective and safe in relieving depression symptom and improving the quality of life in the perimenopausal depression. Further research is needed to understand long-term efficacy and explore the mechanism of this intervention. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov NCT02423694.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Although insomnia is one of the most prevalent and disturbing symptoms among patients with cancer, it has not been properly managed. Electroacupuncture (EA) has received attention as a promising intervention for insomnia, and a few previous studies have reported that this intervention may be beneficial for treating insomnia in patients with cancer. The aim of this pilot study is to explore the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of EA on the sleep disturbance of patients with cancer with insomnia using a subjective method, patient-reported questionnaires and an objective tool, actigraphy, to measure the quality of sleep. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This is a study protocol for a randomised, three-arm, multicentre, pilot clinical trial. A total of 45 patients with cancer who have continuous insomnia related to cancer treatment or cancer itself will be randomly allocated to an EA group, sham EA group or usual care group in equal proportions. The EA group will receive 10 sessions of EA treatment over 4 weeks. The sham EA group will receive sham EA at non-acupoints using non-penetrating Streitberger acupuncture needles with mock EA. The usual care group will not receive EA treatment. All participants will be provided a brochure on the management of sleep disorders regardless of their group assignment. The primary outcome measure is the mean change in the insomnia severity index from the baseline to week 5. Information related to sleep quality will also be obtained through the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, a sleep diary and actigraphy. Participants will complete the trial by visiting the research centre at week 9 for follow-up assessment. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION This study protocol was approved by the institutional review boards of each research centre. Written informed consent will be obtained from all participants. Abstract
The integrative care model is rooted in a biopsychosocial approach. Integrative
is a term which refers to increasing the harmony and coherence of your whole
being, and integrative care is therefore focused on the person, not on either
the disease or a therapy. It is provided collaboratively by a health team
comprising physicians, psychologists, physiotherapists, acupuncturists, and
meditation, nutrition, and floral therapy. Previous studies have demonstrated
that interventions based on the integrative care model improved womens lifestyle
and quality of life. Our aim was to describe the use of complementary and
alternative medicine (CAM) alongside traditional medicine among women with sleep
conditions in our Womens Sleep Disorders Integrative Treatment Outpatient
Clinic. We are sharing our experiences and clinical practice as the model we
developed seems to have both physical and psychological benefits for women with
sleep problems. We discuss the wide range of benefits that result from this type
of complex intervention, and the contextual factors that may influence these
benefits. This will inform future practitioners and we hope to contribute to
quantitative research in the clinical setting. The study highlights the
importance of treating sleep complaints with a caring relationship and a CAM
approach, alongside conventional medicine. Exploration of the lived experience
of CAM and its meaning enables healthcare professionals to gain insights into
the patients needs, preferences, and values. Gynecologists, clinicians, and
health care providers should support and guide patients in their decision to use
CAM by providing evidence-based and comprehensive advice on the potential
benefits, risks and related safety issues of this approach.

Abstract
Climacteric syndrome refers to recurring symptoms such as hot flashes, chills, headache, irritability and depression. This is usually experienced by menopausal women and can be related to a hormonal reorganization in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, originating 1000s of years ago, above-mentioned symptoms can be interpreted on the basis of the philosophic diagnostic concepts, such as the imbalance of Yin and Yang, the Zang-Fu and Basic substances (e.g. Qi, Blood and Essence). These concepts postulate balance and harmonization as the principle aim of a treatment. In this context, it is not astounding that one of the most prominent ancient textbooks dating back to 500-200 BC, Huang di Neijing: The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine gives already first instructions for diagnosis and therapy of climacteric symptoms. For therapy, traditional Chinese medicine comprises five treatment principles: Chinese herbal medicine, TuiNa (a Chinese form of manual therapy), nutrition, activity (e.g. QiGong) and acupuncture (being the most widespread form of treatment used in Europe). This review provides an easy access to the concepts of traditional Chinese medicine particularly regarding to climacteric syndrome and also focuses on current scientific evidence.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Insomnia both as a symptom and as part of chronic insomnia disorder is quite common in menopause. Comorbid conditions, such as restless legs syndrome and obstructive sleep apnea, occur with high prevalence among perimenopausal women with insomnia. Insomnia in this population group is associated with adverse health outcomes, and there are no clear standards on how to treat it. METHODS Based on extensive literature search, 76 articles were identified. Two authors independently graded evidence according to the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine Levels of Evidence. RESULTS Evaluation and treatment of other comorbid sleep disorders are recommended, as is cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia. Hormone therapy, eszopiclone, escitalopram, gabapentin, isoflavones, valerian, exercise, and hypnosis are suggested. Zolpidem, quiteiapine XL, citalopram, mirtazapine followed by long-acting melatonin, ramelteon, Pycnogenol, Phyto-Female Complex, yoga, and massage may be considered. Kampo formulas are not recommended. Acupuncture may not be suggested, and cognitive-behavioral therapy that is not tailored for insomnia probably should not be considered. CONCLUSIONS Although a variety of interventions are shown to be helpful in improving sleep in menopause, there is a need for well-designed head-to-head trials with uniform outcome measures.

Abstract
Sleep disorders are commonly observed among postmenopausal women, with negative effects on their quality of life. The search for complementary therapies for sleep disorders during postmenopausal period is of high importance, and acupuncture stands out as an appropriate possibility. The present review intended to systematically evaluate the available literature, compiling studies that have employed acupuncture as treatment to sleep disorders in postmenopausal women. A bibliographic search was performed in PubMed/Medline and Scopus. Articles which had acupuncture as intervention, sleep related measurements as outcomes, and postmenopausal women as target population were included and evaluated according to the Cochrane risk of bias tool and to the STRICTA guidelines. Out of 89 search results, 12 articles composed our final sample. A high heterogeneity was observed among these articles, which prevented us from performing a meta-analysis. Selected articles did not present high risk of bias and had a satisfactory compliance rate with STRICTA guidelines. In general, these studies presented improvements in sleep-related variables. Despite the overall positive effects, acupuncture still cannot be stated as a reliable treatment for sleep-related complaints, not due to inefficacy, but rather limited evidence. Nevertheless, results are promising and new comprehensive and controlled studies in the field are encouraged.

Abstract
Background. The increased practice of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) worldwide has raised concerns regarding herb-drug interactions. The purpose of our study is to analyze the concurrent use of Chinese herbal products (CHPs) among Taiwanese insomnia patients taking hypnotic drugs. Methods. The usage, frequency of services, and CHP prescribed among 53,949 insomnia sufferers were evaluated from a random sample of 1 million beneficiaries in the National Health Insurance Research Database. A logistic regression method was used to identify the factors that were associated with the coprescription of a CHP and a hypnotic drug. Cox proportional hazards regressions were performed to calculate the hazard ratios (HRs) of hip fracture between the two groups. Results. More than 1 of every 3 hypnotic users also used a CHP concurrently. Jia-Wei-Xiao-Yao-San (Augmented Rambling Powder) and Suan-Zao-Ren-Tang (Zizyphus Combination) were the 2 most commonly used CHPs that were coadministered with hypnotic drugs. The HR of hip fracture for hypnotic-drug users who used a CHP concurrently was 0.57-fold (95% CI = 0.47-0.69) that of hypnotic-drug users who did not use a CHP. Conclusion. Exploring potential CHP-drug interactions and integrating both healthcare approaches might be beneficial for the overall health and quality of life of insomnia sufferers.

Abstract
Insomnia appears to be a fast-spreading problem in the modern days, which not only affects people's living quality but also impairs people's working efficiency even causing disability. Pharmacological treatment is effective but frequently with significant side effects. Acupuncture is traditionally used for the treatment of insomnia in China and now is widely accepted in the Western countries. Many research works on clinical applications of acupuncture in the treatment of insomnia and the potential mechanisms underlying the acupuncture treatment have been reported. This chapter will try to provide a systematic review on the research findings. A number of clinical studies, mainly randomized controlled clinical trials, have shown positive effects in acupuncture treatment of insomnia. Some of the studies demonstrated that acupuncture treatment appeared to be better than conventional pharmacological drugs in the improvement of insomnia. These encouraging findings are limited by the qualities problems of the methodology used in these clinical studies. The clinical efficacy of acupuncture appeared to be supported by evidence obtained from basic neuroendocrinological studies. A number of studies have demonstrated that acupuncture may modulate a wide range of neuroendocrinological factors following stimulation of acupoints. Evidence has suggested that the clinical efficacy of acupuncture in treatment of insomnia is potentially mediated by a variety of neurotransmitters including norepinephrine, melatonin, gamma-aminobutyric acid, and β-endorphin. However, due to the complexity, these findings are far from conclusive. More research is necessary. More rigors methodology and integrated approach to evaluate both clinical and basic research evidence are required for future studies.
