Infestation of the Eyelid by an Egg-Laying Tick: Case Report

In this report, we describe a rare case of a tick egg-laying infestation of the eyelid. A 7-year-old girl consulted our hospital after a trip in Thailand for an itchy and painful eyelid. The first examination at the slit lamp showed the tick's body attached to the left superior eyelid margin, surrounded by its eggs. The tick detached itself afterward and a tobramycin prophylactic treatment was introduced. The patient was put under surveillance and no signs of a tick-borne disease were described during the follow-up.

Emergence of the zoonotic tick Dermacentor (Indocentor) auratus Supino, 1897 (Acari: Ixodidae) in Singapore

Though ticks pose a significant public health risk, until recently, little research had focused on the diversity of ticks and tick-borne diseases in Singapore. To date, only fourteen tick species in five genera have been recorded there. For the first time, Dermacentor auratus is recorded from Singapore from a range of hosts, including humans. DNA sequences are provided at 2 loci, for D. auratus, the cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) for DNA barcoding and the 16S large subunit ribosomal RNA (16S lsu rRNA). The health risk posed by D. auratus in Singapore is discussed.

Tick Infestation of Eyelid: Two Case Reports

Tick infestation of the eyelid is a rare but serious condition that can lead to Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever. In this report, we describe two cases who presented with tick infestation of the eyelid. Neither patient developed systemic disease or adverse sequelae after tick extraction. Complete mechanical removal of ticks located on the eyelid with blunt forceps is a safe and effective treatment method.

Conjunctival Attachment of a Live Paralysis Tick, Ixodes holocyclus, in a Child: A Case Report

We describe a rare clinical finding of conjunctival tick attachment in a child. A 10-year-old boy presented to the clinic with right-eye itch. He was found to have a live tick firmly attached to his right temporal conjunctiva. The tick was identified as the larval stage of the paralysis tick, Ixodes holocyclus. The tick was removed completely by conjunctival excision. Although various methods of removing a tick have been described in the literature, the goal of treatment is the safe and complete removal of the tick to prevent further transmission of pathogens, allergens, and toxins to the patient.

Tick Infestation of the Eyelid With Histopathologic Characterization

Ocular tick infestation is a rare occurrence. The authors report a case that is unique for being the first published example from New England, for its chronic presentation, and for the inclusion of histopathologic analysis in its diagnostic workup. A 75-year-old man was evaluated for a persistent eyelid growth secondary to an incompletely removed tick that had attached 6 months earlier. The lesion was completely excised, and a partially destroyed arthropod was observed embedded within the tissue. Light microscopy demonstrated a mixed granulomatous reaction. Given the disruption of the tick's anatomy, speciation could not be performed. The patient had an uneventful recovery. A corresponding review of tick bites to the eye is provided.

Phthriasis palpebrarum can resemble tick larva infestation in an eyelid

The similarities of the larval and nymph stages of the tick and louse (Pthirus pubis) may lead to misdiagnosis in rare cases of infestation of the eyelashes. The most frequent manifestations of tick in the eye are conjunctivitis, uveitis, keratitis, and vasculitis. Tick inoculation of the skin can locally lead to formation of granuloma and abscess. More concerning is the potential systemic sequelae that can result from transmission of zoonoses such as Lyme disease. P. pubis can cause pruritic eyelid margins or unusual blepharoconjunctivitis. We present a case of phthiriasis palpebrarum in a 4-year-old boy.

Management of tick infestation of the eyelid

Tick infestation of ocular tissues is not common. Tick inoculation of the skin can locally lead to granuloma and abscess formation. More concerning, however, is the potential systemic sequelae that can result from transmission of zoonoses such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Ehrlichia, and tularemia. To avoid these complications, it is critical that the tick is completely removed. The authors present a case of tick infestation in the eyelid of a 55-year-old woman and review the management of such a case.
