Stressors and Protective Factors among Veterinary Students in New Zealand

Cross-sectional study of physical activity, dietary habits, and mental health of veterinary students after lifting of COVID-19 pandemic measures

Mental illness is an important public health concern in veterinary students. Recent literature has demonstrated a negative effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on veterinary students' mental health. Little literature to date has evaluated the mental health of veterinary students affected by the COVID-19 pandemic after most pandemic measures have been lifted. The objective of this study was to describe physical activity, diet, and mental health in veterinary students after pandemic measures were lifted. A secondary objective was to examine the association between depression symptoms and exposure factors in this cohort of veterinary students. In a cross-sectional study, veterinary students (n = 487) at a public university received an online survey with questions regarding their physical activity, diet, stress, and self-rated symptoms across 11 mental health domains. Logistic regression was used to quantify the association between exposure factors and depression symptoms. One-hundred and twelve students completed the survey. Sixty-three (56%) respondents met the criteria for concern within the mental health domain of depression, 75 (67%) for anxiety, and 16 (14%) for suicidal ideation. Fourth year students had the lowest weekly vigorous physical activity (median 0.5 hours). The odds of self-reported depression symptoms were 8 times lower in students engaged in high levels of vigorous exercise compared to students engaged in low levels, after controlling for number of years in the program (p = 0.02). Mental health concerns were high in this group of veterinary students.

Assessing the Mental Wellbeing and Help-Seeking Behaviors of Pre-Veterinary Undergraduates at a Land-Grant Institution

Recent research conducted within the veterinary profession has reported higher rates of depression and stress than the general US population. While this decline in mental wellbeing has been documented in Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) students and veterinary professionals, there is a lack of research on the mental wellbeing of the pre-veterinary population. This gap led the authors to conduct a survey in the fall of 2021 utilizing the DASS-21 and ATSPPH-sf inventories to assess the levels of depression, anxiety, stress, and help-seeking stigma in pre-veterinary students to better understand when the decline in veterinary mental wellbeing begins. A pre-test survey was completed by 233 pre-veterinary students in September, and an identical post-test survey was completed by 184 pre-veterinary students in November. From the pre- and post-test data, depression, anxiety, and stress scores increased as students advanced in academic status during their undergraduate degree. Juniors reported the highest averages of depression, anxiety, and stress compared to their peers. In the post-test, sophomores and juniors exhibited higher rates of depression than freshmen, and juniors and seniors exhibited higher rates of stress than freshmen. Current VMCAS applicants exhibited higher levels of stress than non-VMCAS applicants in the pre-test, and lower levels of stress in the post-test. In both the pre-test and post-test data, respondents averaged a neutral attitude toward help-seeking. Based on these results, a decline in pre-veterinary mental wellbeing occurs as students' progress in their undergraduate career and should be further studied to assess its impact on Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and veterinary professional wellbeing.

Veterinary professional identity: Conceptual analysis and location in a practice theory framework

Professional, social, and cultural issues and phenomena of veterinary practice are now established areas of commentary and interest in research, education, professional publications and even in the mainstream media. Despite the availability of theoretically informed literature in diverse relevant domains and disciplines including professional practice, workplace learning, and medical sociology and anthropology, commentary and research on veterinary practice issues and phenomena remains dominated by clinician-educators and clinician-policymakers. Reflecting the clinical disciplinary traditions, there is a resulting over-representation of individualistic, positivist perspectives and under-theorized research studies. In this paper we provide an interdisciplinary theoretical framework for veterinary practice and veterinary professional identity grounded in a practice theory perspective. We begin by arguing for the need for such a framework by scoping veterinary practice in its contemporary social context. We go on to provide a sociocultural framing of veterinary practice, underlining the mutual constitution of individuals and the social world through participation in practices and taking into consideration important concepts including knowledge, institutions, ethics, and embodiment. We assert the importance of professional identity as a core phenomenon of veterinary practice, constituted by making meaning of professional practice experiences, especially through narrative and dialogue. This practice theory framework for veterinary practice and veterinary professional identity development provides rich opportunities for understanding, researching, and enacting diverse activities and phenomena, especially learning, development and change within and beyond formal educational settings.

Lecture Capture: Friend or Foe?

Lecture capture (LC)-a recording of the live lecture provided as a supplementary resource-is accepted as a standard provision in UK higher education. Previous research has shown it to be very popular with students, although there have been conflicting findings in terms of its impact on attendance and attainment, and suggestions that student engagement with this resource varies depending on their own preferences and approaches. The aim of the present study was to determine the impact of LC on students in a wider sense, encompassing pedagogic and pastoral aspects of student development. This mixed-methods study analyzed focus group and questionnaire data from first- and second-year veterinary students at one UK university. Results demonstrated the student belief that LC is important for learning and well-being but highlighted the facilitation of passive and surface learning that this resource offers. More worryingly, this study identified a group of students for whom this resource may be particularly unhelpful. This group, relied excessively upon LC for learning, felt overwhelmed by their workload despite working fewer hours, and subsequently achieved poorer exam results. A key theme in this negative relationship appeared to be low self-efficacy. The findings enable educators to consider how resources are provided and to encourage implementing mechanisms to help students make better choices, and take control of their learning.

Electromyographic Analysis of Muscle Activation Patterns During Bovine Transrectal Palpation and the Development of the Bovine Pregnancy Diagnosis Improvement Exercise Program

The unusual and tiring physical activity of bovine transrectal palpation (TRP) requires a novel approach to improve students' TRP and pregnancy diagnosis (PD) skills. It has been shown that students who participated in an exercise program and students who had a grip strength (GS) of more than 30 kilograms performed better in bovine PDs. Participation in the exercise program increased students' sensitivity (ability to identify pregnant cows) but did not increase total arm muscle strength. To identify which muscles are used during TRPs and to improve the exercise program, an electromyographic (EMG) analysis was used to identify muscle activation patterns and muscle activity levels during bovine TRPs. Eight subject matter experts (SMEs) each palpated two live cows and one Breed'n Betsy^® rectal examination simulator while an EMG Triggered Stimulator recorded muscle activity. Muscle activation was higher for forearm muscles compared with all other examined muscle groups (p < .001); was higher during retraction of the uterus and palpation of left and right uterine horn, compared with palpation of cervix, uterine body, left ovary, and right ovary (p < .001); and showed an endurance pattern. Findings have been used to modify the previously developed exercise program in effort to improve students' TRP and PD skills. The Bovine PD Improvement Exercise Program is available to students through an online application (http://icarus.up.ac.za/vetmlp/) and aims to not only improve GS and TRP accuracy but also stamina and well-being while adding fun to busy study schedules.

The Eating with Ease Program Improved Veterinary Medical Students' Perceived Ability to Buy, Cook, and Eat Healthy Foods

College students are challenged to consume healthy diets, and veterinary medical students may also have difficulty achieving optimal dietary intake, yet improved well-being is associated with following healthy dietary patterns. Individuals with food literacy-the inter-related knowledge, skills, and behaviors to plan and manage, select, prepare, and eat healthy foods-are better able to meet dietary recommendations. The Eating with Ease program developed and tested a nutrition education/culinary skill-building program to build first- and second-year veterinary medicine students' food literacy and healthy behaviors toward food. The curriculum emphasized health and nutrition, taste, food preparation skills, planning/decision making, and convenience. Students engaged in four 30-minute sessions and communicated through a mobile group messaging application. Pre- and post-program scores on the Eating and Food Literacy Behaviors Questionnaire (EFLBQ) were compared between those who finished the intervention and a control group of graduate students who completed a money management program. The intervention group (n = 23) had a mean age of 24.2 years (SD = 2.6), and the control group (n = 14) had a mean age of 27.1 years (SD = 2.3). Most participants were female (87%, n = 20 and 79%, n = 11 in the intervention and control groups, respectively). After completing the program, the veterinary medical students' mean EFLBQ factor change score for health and nutrition was significantly higher (p = .03) when compared to the control group. These findings suggest that a short, evidence-based nutrition education/culinary skill-building program may improve veterinary medical students' behaviors to choose, prepare and consume healthy foods.

Impact of Human-Animal Interactions on Psychological and Physiological Factors Associated With Veterinary School Students and Donkeys

There has been an increased interest in evaluating human-animal interactions and assessing the mutual health and wellbeing. In this study, first-year female and male veterinary school students not paired (n = 58) or paired (n = 25) with immature (≤9 mo) donkeys (n = 13) were engaged in three different types of interactions (1st, hands-off remote learning, 2nd, hands-on passive learning, and 3rd, hands-on active learning) for 30 min each during Week 2 (Time 1), Weeks 5-8 (Time 2), and Week 12 (Time 3) over three, 15-week periods. Student psychological data involved the Penn State Worry Questionnaire (PSWQ) scores collected from the interactive (student-donkey pairs) and non-interactive (no student-donkey pairs) groups and modified Comfort from Companion Animals Scale (CCAS) scores collected from the interactive group during Times 1, 2, and 3. Donkey physiological data involved collection of saliva within 10 min pre- and post-interaction during Times 1, 2, and 3 in association with the different types of interactions for immunoanalysis of cortisol. There were no significant effects of the various times and types of interactions on CCAS scores. While there were no significant effects of group and types of interactions on PSWQ scores, there was an effect (P = 0.01) of time. Overall mean PSWQ scores were significantly lower during Week 12 versus Week 2. Correspondingly, while there were no effects pre- vs. post-interaction within or among times on saliva cortisol concentrations in donkeys, there was an effect (P = 0.02) of the type of interaction. Mean concentrations were significantly lower with the hands-on passive and hands-on active learning versus the hands-off remote learning. In conclusion, while this study provides preliminary evidence surrounding student donkey interactions, future studies are required with more comprehensive designs to clarify these benefits and better understand the advantages and challenges surrounding student-donkey interactions.

Evidence-Based Approach to Switching to a Pass-Fail System for Clinical Year Veterinary Student Grading

Veterinary schools have traditionally used letter grading systems to assess the performance of students on clinical rotations, but pass-fail grading may enhance the learning environment and student well-being. When a decision to switch grading systems is discussed, concerns are often raised about the effect of removing clinical year grades from final grade point average (GPA) calculations. In order to inform the decision making at our institution, retrospective analysis of the effects of clinical year grades on GPA was performed. The specific hypothesis tested was that clinical year GPA would not have a significant effect on cumulative GPA, as defined by a decrease or increase of 0.10 points on average. When data from two classes were examined, median (range) difference final GPA (0-4 scale) compared to GPA at the end of the pre-clinical curriculum (referred to as delta GPA) was 0.02 (-0.19 to 0.18) for the graduating class of 2016 after removal of two outliers and 0.03 (-0.10 to 0.18) for the class of 2017. Correlations between preclinical GPA and delta GPA (were -0.83 (p < .001) for both classes. The hypothesis was supported, leading to the conclusion that the overall effect of clinical letter grades on final GPA was close to zero when whole classes were considered, and delta GPA ranged between -0.2 and 0.2 for all except two students. Data from this study were distributed prior to conducting a faculty vote to switch grading systems, and the motion was supported.

Stressors Predicting Depression, Anxiety, and Stress in Korean Veterinary Students

Psychological distress has a negative impact on professional development in health care professions. In this article, we measured the prevalence of students' depression, anxiety, and stress using the DASS-21 questionnaire in 10 veterinary colleges in Korea to investigate the stressors that contribute to these forms of psychological distress. The prevalence of academic and relationship types of stressors were higher than others. The proportion of students above a severe level of depression, anxiety, and stress on the DASS-21 scales was 30.9, 35.8, and 43.2%, respectively. The DASS-21 scores mediated the relationship between the perceived frequency of stressors and the respondents' satisfaction with their education and career. Statistical analysis revealed that female and pre-clinical students are more vulnerable to depression, anxiety, and stress. The findings of the article indicate the gravity of Korean veterinary students' mental and psychological state, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive management of students' mental health.

Characterizing the use of class rank in evaluating applicants for veterinary internship and residency positions

OBJECTIVE

To characterize how class rank and other criteria are used to evaluate applicants for veterinary internship and residency positions.

SAMPLE

Program directors for 572 internship and residency programs.

PROCEDURES

A survey was sent to program directors asking them to score the importance of 7 items (cover letter, letters of reference, curriculum vitae, veterinary class rank, grade point average, grades for classes specifically related to the internship or residency specialty area, and interview) they could use in evaluating applicants for an internship or residency and to rank those 7 items, along with an open item asking participants to list other criteria they used, from most to least important.

RESULTS

Responses were obtained for 195 internship and 222 residency programs. For both internship programs and residency programs, mean importance scores assigned to the 7 items resulted in the same ordering from most to least important, with letters of reference, interview, curriculum vitae, and cover letter most important. Rankings of the importance of the 7 items, along with an "other" item, were similar for internship and residency programs; the most important item was a candidate's letters of reference, followed by the interview, cover letter, and curriculum vitae.

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Results suggested that although most veterinary internship and residency programs consider class rank and overall grade point average when evaluating applicants, these 2 items were not the most important. For both internship and residency programs, the most important items were an applicant's letters of reference, followed by the interview, cover letter, and curriculum vitae. Influence of an Exercise Program, Muscle Strength, Proprioception, and Arm Length on Veterinary Students' Bovine Pregnancy Diagnosis Accuracy

Bovine pregnancy diagnosis (PD) by transrectal palpation (TRP) is an important skill for veterinary graduates. Factors influencing students' PD accuracy were investigated to optimize bovine PD by TRP training without increasing live animal exposure. The objective was to determine whether arm length and strength, proprioception, and exposure to a 6-week exercise training program were significantly associated with students' PD accuracy. Veterinary students (n = 128) who had previously received formal theoretical and practical training in bovine TRP and PD (live cows and TRP simulators) were assessed for PD accuracy on live cows. Prior to assessment, arm muscle strength measurement, an exercise program, and additional TRP sessions on Breed'n Betsy^® simulators and live cows were offered to the students. Seventy-eight students volunteered to participate in the arm length measurement, muscle strength, and proprioception testing. Of these, 35 randomly allocated students completed a 6-week exercise program, after which muscle strength was reassessed. Each student performed PDs on six cows of which the pregnancy status, ranging from 6 weeks to 9 months pregnant or not pregnant, was predetermined by an experienced veterinarian. PD accuracy was measured as sensitivity and specificity, being defined as the proportion of pregnant or nonpregnant cows, respectively, correctly identified by the student. It is concluded that hand grip strength and participation in an exercise program are significant predictors of veterinary students' PD accuracy. Implementation of an exercise program aimed at improving grip strength in the veterinary curriculum is a novel approach to improve bovine TRP and PD training.

A Systematic Review of Mental Health-Improving Interventions in Veterinary Students

Literature over the past 5 years has demonstrated that veterinary students globally are experiencing poor mental health. This has detrimental consequences for their emotional well-being and physical health, as well as implications for their future careers. Considering this issue, a systematic review was devised to investigate what interventions were being used, and what effect they had, in veterinary students. The review process involved a search of five databases, from which 161 records were retrieved. Following this, the screening process revealed seven articles eligible for appraisal. These studies investigated seven different interventions, six being cohort-level workshops/courses and one being a collation of several individual strategies. All seven studies reported that the interventions were effective to some degree in improving the mental health of their participants. However, the lack of repeat interventions and control groups limited the external validity of each intervention. A comparison to the research in medical students is briefly discussed. Three of the appraised articles were recommended for further investigation.

Exploring Students' Perceptions of the Educational Environment in a Caribbean Veterinary School: A Cross-Sectional Study

Educational environment has a significant impact on students' learning and academic achievement. The aim of this article was to explore the perception of veterinary school students' regarding their educational environment at the University of the West Indies. In this cross-sectional study, the Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) was administered to veterinary undergraduate students from year 2 to year 5. The DREEM questionnaire consists of 50 items with five subscales: students' perceptions of learning, students' perceptions of teachers, students' academic self-perceptions, students' perceptions of atmosphere, and students' social self-perceptions. Each item was scored on a 5-point Likert scale ranging from strongly disagree (0) to strongly agree (4). The Cronbach's alpha for the overall DREEM score was 0.92, and for the five subscales, it ranged from 0.66 to 0.83. A total of 99 students responded (response rate: 86%). The students' overall DREEM mean score was 106.59 out of the global mean score of 200, indicating that students' perception of the educational environment was generally more positive than negative. In the five DREEM subscales, students were found to have a more positive perception of learning (55.15%); students' perception of teachers was generally positive (61.41%); and their perception of academic atmosphere was also positive (57.75%). Conversely, students' academic self-perception (51.41%) and social self-perception (42.61%) trended negatively. The findings suggest that improvement is needed in significant areas in the veterinary school, including curriculum review, faculty development, provision of sports and cultural facilities, stress management, and academic support systems.

Characteristics of Veterinary Students: Perfectionism, Personality Factors, and Resilience

Perfectionism is a topic relevant to veterinary medicine and has previously been found to be related to higher levels of stress and poorer mental health outcomes. However, many aspects of perfectionism have yet to be researched among veterinary students. This research investigates the relationship between perfectionism and the "Big Five" personality factors. Additionally, the relationship between resilience and neuroticism is addressed. This research includes a sample of 99 veterinary students enrolled at a College of Veterinary Medicine in the southeastern United States. Students completed the Multidimensional Perfectionism Inventory (MPI), the Big Five Inventory (BFI), and the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS). Results show that perfectionism is significantly correlated with personality factors; specifically, self-oriented perfectionism and socially prescribed perfectionism are associated with neuroticism, socially prescribed perfectionism is associated with agreeableness, and self-oriented perfectionism is associated with conscientiousness. Neuroticism was found to have a significant negative correlation with resilience. Findings indicate that veterinary mental health professionals and educators should consider implementing specific strategies to help students develop a healthy balance in their perfectionistic beliefs and have targeted interventions to promote student resilience.

Monitoring the Curriculum through the Student Perspective

Student input was deliberately included as part of the curriculum implementation and assessment plan at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. The new curriculum included design features to encourage deeper learning such as a spiral curriculum with cross-course integration, increased open time, and more active learning. Student well-being was seen as a simultaneous need. To gather overall perceptions of workload and well-being, student volunteers from each cohort were surveyed weekly starting in 2013. Survey questions asked about out-of-class work time, level of integration, extracurricular activities, student well-being habits, paid employment, and other factors. Survey questions were combined with course data to get a full picture of week quality, total course work time, extracurricular activities, and the effects of integration. Many of our hypotheses about curricular and extracurricular impacts on week quality were disproven. Week quality was most positively affected by student factors of sleep and exercise, whereas the curricular factors of out-of-class work time, total course work time, and examination hours had the strongest negative effects. A surprising finding was that open time, in-class hours, and paid employment hours had a minimal effect on week quality. Students identified excessively heavy semesters and uneven semester workloads that resulted in early revisions to the new curriculum. Student feedback provided a view of the curriculum that was not otherwise available and resulted in early and significant impacts on the new curriculum, and they provided insight into whether planned changes had occurred and how effective various factors were in reaching the curricular goals.

Cross-sectional analysis of veterinary student coping strategies and stigma in seeking psychological help

Veterinary education can result in high levels of academic stressors for students. Students are also susceptible to non-academic stressors, including relationship issues and financial concerns. These can all result in mental ill health, which may impair the student's ability to complete their studies and go on to a successful professional career. Finding and using strategies early on to help alleviate mental health problems is critical to successful management of these problems, but seeking help may be impeded by the stigma associated with mental health problems. Using a cross-sectional online survey of a sample of Australian veterinary students, the aim of the current study was to investigate the type and frequency of their coping strategies as well as to explore relationships between self-stigma and coping strategies. Female veterinary students reported more use of instrumental and emotional support as coping strategies, while male veterinary students demonstrated more use of humour. Self-stigma was related to less instrumental support, greater self-blame and gender, while males who employed more humour as a coping strategy reported more self-stigma. Improving the coping strategies of veterinary students and reducing the self-stigma surrounding mental ill health is important to improve the wellbeing and resilience of the veterinary profession.

Veterinary Student Stress, the Benefit of Canine Pets, and Potential Institutional Support of Dog Ownership

The stress of veterinary school and the high prevalence of psychological distress among veterinary students have been well documented. Pet ownership is known to improve overall health and reduce stress among the public. Yet, for veterinary students, owning a pet (especially a dog) can offer both rewards and challenges. The academic schedule for veterinary students often comprises long hours that can make caring for a dog challenging. This study explores the area of veterinary students' dog care options and perspectives by examining two aspects of this issue: (a) currently available options, as reported by academic administrators, and (b) perceived need for these options, as reported by veterinary students. A survey of associate deans for academic affairs (n = 30) found that routine on-site kenneling options for student-owned dogs are available at eight (26.6%) veterinary schools. Simultaneously, results of a student survey (n = 768) revealed a great desire for on-campus services. Among students who did not have access to on-campus kenneling facilities, 71.5% (453 of 634) felt that creating these options would be important or very important. Across all students surveyed, 76% (581 of 764) felt it would be important to have on-site dog housing/care available. Students experience considerable stress over having to find accommodations or care for their dogs while engaged in academic activities. Thus, providing on-site boarding and care options for student-owned dogs can play an important role in both recruiting prospective veterinary students and enhancing the well-being of those currently in the program.

Teaching Slaughter: Mapping Changes in Emotions in Veterinary Students during Training in Humane Slaughter

As part of their training, Dutch veterinary students learn how to carry out the humane slaughter of livestock, which many students consider emotionally challenging. The aims of this study were to plot changes in self-reported emotions in veterinary students at different time points during an educational program on humane slaughter using emotion cards and to assess the change in reported emotions after adding a video and a short period of self-reflection to the program. Emotions were mapped in five groups of students at the beginning, middle, and end of the program by asking them to select from 40 cards depicting emotions in photo and text. Then two changes were made to the course program: a video of an expert slaughterman stunning and bleeding a bovine was shown, and the students were requested to spend 2 minutes picturing themselves carrying out the same procedures. To evaluate the effect of these improvements to the course, the following five groups of students were asked in the same way to indicate their emotions at the same three time points. Adding the video and short period of self-reflection did not change the emotions reported by students. Our results indicate that instruction in humane slaughter techniques involves a significant mental challenge for students. The use of emotion cards by teachers could provide useful insights into emotional aspects of the more challenging programs for students.

Experience and confidence of final year veterinary students in performing desexing surgeries

AIMS

To describe the level of experience and confidence of veterinary students in performing canine and feline desexing procedures at the end of their final clinical year.

METHOD

A cross-sectional survey was conducted with veterinary students at Massey University in November 2017 after completion of their final clinical year. The questions included career plans after graduation, number of assisted and unassisted desexing procedures performed, approximate time to complete desexing surgeries, level of confidence with different aspects of desexing surgeries, what aspects of their desexing surgery training were most helpful, and what could be done to improve training in desexing surgical skills in veterinary school.

RESULTS

The survey was completed by 70/95 (74%) students in their final clinical year. Among respondents, 55/70 (70%) had performed >2 unassisted feline neuters before graduation. However 38/70 (54%) students had never performed an unassisted feline spay, 31/70 (44%) had never performed an unassisted canine neuter, and 44/70 (63%) students had never performed an unassisted canine spay. The median reported times to complete a feline neuter, feline spay, canine neuter, and canine spay were 9, 40, 30 and 60 minutes, respectively. The median level of confidence for these procedures were 9, 6, 7 and 5 (on a scale from 1=least confident to 10=most confident), respectively. The reported time to complete procedures and the confidence in performing procedures did not change markedly with increasing total number of procedures performed. Students were most concerned about their ability to perform the desexing procedures in a reasonable amount of time and to prevent post-operative bleeding from occurring. Students were least concerned with their ability to manage post-operative pain in patients and to select the appropriate suture material. Free-text comments revealed that 62/70 (89%) students wanted more hands-on surgical experience prior to graduation.

CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVENCE

Many students are currently completing veterinary school with limited experience and low confidence with performing routine canine and feline desexing procedures. Further research is needed to identify the most effective ways for addressing this issue within the constraints of the veterinary curriculum and teaching hospital resources.

The Effects of Music during a Physical Examination Skills Practice: A Pilot Study

Some veterinary students experience elevated stress, anxiety, and depression resulting in disease and psychological changes. Elevated arousal, negative moods, and lack of interest can negatively affect performance and learning. Psychoacoustic music promotes calming effects using simple and slow piano sounds and can positively impact well-being and functioning. This pilot study assessed the effects of music on blood pressure, pulse, arousal, and mood during a canine physical examination laboratory. In an AB/BA crossover study, 17 students were randomly allocated to practice physical examination skills while listening to Through a Dog's Ear, Volume 1. Psychological and physiologic data were collected. Nonparametric methods were used to test for significant differences in psychological and physiologic data and a linear mixed models approach was used to test for physiological differences. There were no significant baseline differences between the music and no music groups for DASS-21 depression, anxiety, or stress scores; however, there were significant time differences between pretest and posttest on arousal and mood as measured by the Profile of Mood Sates (POMS) Depression, Fatigue-Inertia, and Tension Anxiety subscales. Linear mixed models revealed no significant treatment effect on the pulse and diastolic blood pressure; however, there was a significant systolic blood pressure treatment effect. Future indications include repeating the study with a larger sample to examine longitudinal psychological and physiological benefits.
