Abstract
Methods The serum selenium level was determined in 45 patients with HBV-positive HCC (HBV+-HCC group), 45 patients with chronic hepatitis B virus infection (CHB group), and 45 healthy cases (HC group). The sodium selenite (Na2SeO3)-treated HepG2.2.15 cells were used to observe the regulatory role of selenium on HBV replication. D-GalN/erastin-added HL7702 was used to determine the regulatory roles of Na2SeO3 on hepatotoxicity or hepatocyte ferroptosis. The wild-type (WT) C57BL/6 mice and HBx-Tg mice were received lipopolysaccharide (LPS)/D-GalN, together with or without Na2SeO3 administration for indicated period. Following euthanasia, the blood and liver tissue samples were collected, and specific markers were evaluated subsequently. Results The serum selenium level was downregulated in patients with HBV-positive HCC (HBV+-HCC group) (57.2 ± 22.5 μg/L vs. 91.8 ± 43.9 μg/L, P < 0.001), and its higher level could provide a better prognosis in these patients. The treatment using Na2SeO3, a selenium donor, at high concentration (5 μM), suppressed the HBV replication by about 50% in HepG2.2.15 cells (P < 0.001), through promoting apoptotic cell death and inhibiting cellular inhibitor of apoptosis proteins (cIAPs). In addition, low-dose (500 nM) Na2SeO3 could almost totally reversed the hepatotoxicity induced by hepatitis B virus X protein (HBx) (P < 0.001), which were the main causes of HCC in patients. Studies at the cellular levels showed that low-dose Na2SeO3 inhibited the HBx-related hepatotoxicity by blocking ferroptosis, and glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) mediated this regulatory role. Mice model results confirmed that the treatment with Na2SeO3 could mitigated LPS/D-GalN-induced hepatic injury through ferroptosis pathways. Conclusion Selenium regulated the dual cell death in different HCC stages via different signaling pathways, which could partly explain the anti-HBV and anti-HCC properties of selenium.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) and manganese (Mn) are essential micronutrients that are important elements of cell metabolism. They are involved in the composition of enzyme systems and regulate enzyme activity. Disturbances in the homeostasis of these micronutrients affect the development of many diseases and carcinogenesis, which can be linked to increased levels of oxidative stress and impaired antioxidant properties of many enzymes. Selenium has a very important function in maintaining immune-endocrine, metabolic and cellular homeostasis. Manganese, on the other hand, is important in development, digestion, reproduction, antioxidant defense, energy production, immune response and regulation of neuronal activity. We review the role of selenium and manganese and their effects on tumor growth, metastasis potential and remodeling of the microenvironment. We also describe their role as potential biomarkers in the diagnosis and the potential for the use of Se- and Mn-containing compounds in composition for the treatment of cancer of the reproductive organs.

Abstract
There is evidence that diet and nutrition are modifiable risk factors for several cancers. In recent years, attention paid to micronutrients in gynecology has increased, especially regarding Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. We performed a review of the literature up until December 2022, aiming to clarify the effects of micronutrients, minerals, and vitamins on the history of HPV infection and the development of cervical cancer. We included studies having as their primary objective the evaluation of dietary supplements, in particular calcium; zinc; iron; selenium; carotenoids; and vitamins A, B12, C, D, E, and K. Different oligo-elements and micronutrients demonstrated a potential protective role against cervical cancer by intervening in different stages of the natural history of HPV infection, development of cervical dysplasia, and invasive disease. Healthcare providers should be aware of and incorporate the literature evidence in counseling, although the low quality of evidence provided by available studies recommends further well-designed investigations to give clear indications for clinical practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The effect of selenoprotein P (SELENOP) levels on the sensitivity of cervical cancer patients to concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) has not been reported. In this study, the effects of the variations in plasma SELENOP levels on the sensitivity of cervical cancer patients to CCRT were investigated using metabonomics. METHODS Two patient groups were evaluated, i.e., the case group: 11 patients with intermediate to advanced primary squamous cervical cancer, who developed resistance against CCRT, and the sensitivity group: 11 patients who did not develop resistance were matched in a 1:1 ratio (controls). Blood samples were collected before and after CCRT, and the plasma SELENOP levels were measured by ELISA. The different metabolites present in the plasma were analyzed by UPLC-MS-MS. RESULTS SELENOP levels exhibited a significant reduction in both the resistant and sensitive groups after CCRT (F = 50.705, P < 0.001), and interaction effects between sensitivity and pre-and post-treatment on SELENOP levels were observed (F = 7.414, P = 0.013). Further, a more significant reduction in the SELENOP levels was observed in the CCRT-resistant group (mean reduction, 0.028 µg/mL; P < 0.001) than in the sensitive group (mean reduction, 0.013 µg/mL; P = 0.006). Four metabolic biomarkers, i.e., C18, C19, C20 sphingomyelin, and phosphatidylcholine 20:2/22:6, were shown to be differentially expressed between the resistant and sensitive groups pre-and post-treatment. C20 sphingomyelin levels exhibited a significant correlation with SELENOP levels (r = -0.326, P = 0.031). CONCLUSION The levels of plasma SELENOP in the CCRT-resistant group decreased significantly, suggesting that SELENOP might affect the sensitivity by modulating lipid synthesis and metabolism.

Abstract
Studies have shown that the micronutrients, zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and selenium (Se) are associated with the HPV-associated cervical cancer, yet between dietary Zn/Cu/Se intake and high-risk HPV (hrHPV) infection remain unclear. We obtained publicly available data in the present cross-sectional study from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) performed between 2011 and 2016. Dietary Zn, Cu, and Se intakes were assessed from two 24-h diet recalls. A total of 4628 female with the age of 18-59 years were included in this secondary analysis. Comparing the highest with the lowest quartiles of Zn intake, the adjusted odds ratio (aOR) for hrHPV infection was 0.72 (95% CI, 0.54-0.98). The aOR upon comparison of the quartile three with the lowest quartile of Cu intake was 0.67 (95% CI, 0.50-0.90). Whereas no significant association was found between intakes of Se and hrHPV infection in multivariate analysis. Moreover, compared with those below the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), hrHPV infection risk was significantly decreased among women who met the RDA for Cu (aOR: 0.74; 95% CI = 0.60-0.92), but not for Zn and Se. In conclusion, high dietary Zn and moderate copper intakes were independently and negatively associated with hrHPV infection in addition to Se.

Abstract
The relationship between selenium and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) infection has been reported previously; however, the specific mechanism is still not clear. In this study, selenium levels decreased in the serum of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) compared with the healthy controls; they were associated with the treatment outcome of such patients. The qRT-PCR assay revealed that selenium might function through proinflammatory and autophagy pathways. The treatment with methylseleninic acid (MSeA), a selenium donor, blocked the M1 polarization of MTB-infected macrophages through the induction of both canonical autophagy and LC3-associated phagocytosis (LAP). c-Jun is vital in mediating the MSeA-triggered canonical autophagy and LAP process, thus displaying a restricting function against intracellular MTB. An in vivo study confirmed that the activity of MSeA was shown through enhancing macrophage autophagy related pathway. The results showed that selenium had a restricting function against intracellular MTB by regulating autophagy in macrophages. The findings might provide a novel direction for PTB therapy in the future.

Abstract
Cervical cancer is a common female cancer. It is strongly associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. However, HPV infection alone is not sufficient to induce cervical cancer because its development is dependent on the coexistence of several factors that enable the virus to overcome the host immune system. These include individual genetic background, environmental factors, or diet, including dietary selenium intake. Selenium is an essential trace element with antiviral properties and has been shown to exert antitumor effects. Surprisingly, the role of selenium in cervical cancer has not been studied as intensively as in other cancers. Here, we have summarized the existing experimental data on selenium and cervical cancer. It may be helpful in evaluating the role of this nutrient in treatment of the mentioned malignancy as well as in planning further studies in this area.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This review aims to summarize the currently available human papillomavirus (HPV) testing methods for precancerous cervical intraepithelial lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS A literature search of PubMed using key words "high-risk HPV, precancerous cervical intraepithelial lesions, FDA-approved HPV tests, p16 IHC, Ki 67 IHC, fluorescent in situ hybridization for HPV, Pap smear, HPV vaccines, HPV tests using self-collected samples, and next-generation sequencing" was performed between January 1 and June 14, 2019. The package inserts of the Food and Drug Administration-approved HPV tests were obtained from the companies' Web sites. RESULTS Multiple morphology-based, immunohistochemical staining and nucleic acid HPV tests were reviewed, including the material required, methodologies, result interpretations, as well as their advantages, limitations, and futures. The structure of HPV and its natural history of infection and transmission were touched on as well for a better understanding of these testing methods. CONCLUSIONS Human papillomavirus tests are a critical component for cervical cancer screening, and understanding of these tests helps test results interpretation and patients' triage.

Abstract
Bone metastases are a frequent complication of breast cancer, and there has been little progress in the treatment of breast cancer patients with bone metastases. The cytotoxicity of selenium donors, including organic selenium and selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs), to cancer cells has been reported previously, but their relationship with bone metastases progression is not fully clear yet. In this study, multicenter clinical exploration was conducted to obtain dietary selenium intakes of breast cancer patients with or without bone metastasis, to study the relationship between selenium and breast cancer prognosis and bone metastasis. We found that dietary selenium intakes were significantly lower in breast cancer patients with bone metastasis, comparing with the non-bone metastasis cases. Selenium lower group of bone metastasis breast cancer patients had worse prognosis, whereas the daily selenium intakes could not predict the prognosis of breast cancer patients without bone metastasis. Subsequently, we study the regulatory role of selenium donors on bone metastasis at the cellular level, by challenging the cells with SeNPs. SeNPs showed potent cytotoxicity in breast cancer cells, no matter whether they were primary or bone-metastatic. SeNPs treated cancer cell inhibited the survival and differentiation of osteoclast progenitor cells. At the molecular level, we demonstrated that IL-6 partially mediated osteoclastogenesis suppression by SeNPs. These results provide a new way for biomarkers or drug development to treat and even prevent bone metastases of breast cancer by using selenium donors.

Abstract
Objectives This research aimed to examine the antitumor mechanisms of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) specifically against prostate cancers. Methods The antitumor activities of SeNPs against cancer cells were determined via MTT assay. The cell cycle was determined by detecting the DNA content, and apoptosis was determined via annexin V-Fluos staining kit. The microRNA expressions in cancer cells were analyzed via microarray and qRT-PCR. The potential targets of miR-16 were identified via luciferase analysis and mRNA expression determination. miR-16 functions in cancer cells were explored via the transient transfection of miR-16 mimic or inhibitor. Results SeNPs were most potent in prostate cancer cells, regardless of whether or not they were androgen-dependent. Furthermore, SeNP stimulation can induce cell cycle arrest and the apoptosis enhancement of prostate cancer cells. Microarray and molecular mechanism studies demonstrated that miR-16 could directly target cyclin D1 and BCL-2 to mediate SeNP apoptosis enhancement. Results show that the serum selenium levels positively correlate with miR-16 expressions, and they correlate with the overall and disease-free survival rates. Conclusion These results signify the cytotoxic potential of SeNPs in prostate cancer treatment.
