Abstract
Diabetes is a common chronic metabolic disease with complex causes and pathogenesis. As an immunomodulator, vitamin D has recently become a research hotspot in the occurrence and development of diabetes and its complications. Many studies have shown that vitamin D can reduce the occurrence of diabetes and delay the progression of diabetes complications, and vitamin D can reduce oxidative stress, inhibit iron apoptosis, promote Ca2+ influx, promote insulin secretion, and reduce insulin resistance. Therefore, the prevention and correction of vitamin D deficiency is very necessary for diabetic patients, but further research is needed to confirm what serum levels of vitamin D3 are maintained in the body. This article provides a brief review of the relationship between vitamin D and diabetes, including its acute and chronic complications.

Abstract
Objective To systematically summarise and evaluate the existing evidence on the effect of diet on the management of type 2 diabetes and prevention of complications. Design Umbrella review of systematic reviews with meta-analyses of randomised controlled trials. Data sources PubMed, Embase, Epistemonikos, and Cochrane, from inception up to 5 June 2022. Eligibility criteria for selecting studies Systematic reviews with meta-analyses of randomised controlled trials reporting summary effect estimates on the effect of diet on any health outcome in populations with type 2 diabetes were included in the review. Only meta-analyses with randomised controlled trials with the duration of at least 12 weeks were eligible for inclusion. Summary data were extracted by two investigators independently. Summary effect estimates with 95% confidence intervals were recalculated with a random effects model if the information provided was insufficient. Methodological quality was assessed with the A MeaSurement Tool to Assess systematic Reviews (AMSTAR) 2 tool and the certainty of evidence with the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluations (GRADE) approach. Results 88 publications with 312 meta-analyses of randomised controlled trials were included. Methodological quality was high to moderate in 23% and low to very low in 77% of the included publications. A high certainty of evidence was found for the beneficial effects of liquid meal replacement on reducing body weight (mean difference -2.37 kg, 95% confidence interval -3.30 to -1.44; n=9 randomised controlled trials included in the meta-analysis) and body mass index (-0.87, -1.32 to -0.43; n=8 randomised controlled trials), and of a low carbohydrate diet (<26% of total energy) on levels of haemoglobin A1c (-0.47%, -0.60% to -0.34%; n=17 randomised controlled trials) and triglycerides (-0.30 mmol/L, -0.43 to -0.17; n=19 randomised controlled trials). A moderate certainty of evidence was found for the beneficial effects of liquid meal replacement, plant based, Mediterranean, high protein, low glycaemic index, and low carbohydrate diets (<26% total energy) on various cardiometabolic measures. The remaining results had low to very low certainty of evidence. Conclusions The evidence indicated that diet has a multifaceted role in the management of type 2 diabetes. An energy restricted diet can reduce body weight and improve cardiometabolic health. Beyond energy restriction, dietary approaches such as plant based, Mediterranean, low carbohydrate (<26% total energy), or high protein diets, and a higher intake of omega 3 fatty acids can be beneficial for cardiometabolic health in individuals with type 2 diabetes. Abstract
According to published meta-analyses, vitamin D exerts different beneficial effects in preventing and controlling risk factors associated with noncommunicable chronic diseases; however, the results are still conflicting. The purpose of this umbrella meta-analysis was to investigate the effect of vitamin D supplementation on low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, total cholesterol (TC), and triglyceride (TG) as components of the lipid profile. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews were systematically searched for meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials. The umbrella meta-analysis followed the PRISMA guidelines. The random-effects model was employed to estimate the overall effect size (ES). Overall, 25 meta-analyses were included. In the standardized mean difference analysis, vitamin D significantly decreased TG (ES: -0.15; 95% CI: -0.23, -0.08; P ≤ 0.001) and TC levels (ES: -0.17; 95% CI: -0.23, -0.11; P ≤ 0.001) and increased HDL levels (ES: 0.08; 95% CI: 0.01, 0.15; P = 0.025). In the weighted mean difference analysis, vitamin D significantly decreased only TG levels (ES: -4.63 mg/dL; 95% CI: -7.70, -1.57; P = 0.003). The present study supports that vitamin D supplementation could be considered a beneficial adjuvant therapy in managing lipid profile levels, especially in individuals with vitamin D deficiency. Abstract
BACKGROUND Higher serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] is associated with lower type 2 diabetes risk. 25(OH)D varies due to skin pigmentation and weight. OBJECTIVES This analysis aims to determine whether the effect of vitamin D differs among people of color and those with overweight/obesity (who have higher diabetes risk) compared with individuals who are White or have normal weight. METHODS The D2d study is a randomized clinical trial in people with prediabetes that tested the effects of daily vitamin D3 4000 IU vs. placebo on diabetes risk (median followup 2.5 y). We compared baseline and intratrial mean 25(OH)D concentrations, defined as the mean of all available annual 25(OH)D values, among groups defined by self-reported race and body mass index (BMI). We used Cox proportional hazards models to assess the associations between intratrial mean 25(OH)D and diabetes risk by race- and BMI-based groups. RESULTS Asian (n=130), Black (n=616), and White (n=1616) participants were included. Both baseline and intratrial mean 25(OH)D concentrations differed significantly by race groups (both P < 0.001) and were lower in Asian and Black vs. White participants, and in those with higher vs. lower BMI adjusted for race (both P < 0.001). Compared with those with lower concentrations, Black and White participants with intratrial mean 25(OH)D ≥ 40 ng/mL had significantly reduced diabetes risk [HR (95% CI): Black: 0.51 (0.29, 0.92); White: 0.42 (0.30, 0.60)] and with a similar reduction in diabetes risk among Asian participants: 0.39 (0.14, 1.11). Compared with those with lower concentrations, participants with baseline BMI < 40 kg/m2 who achieved intratrial mean 25(OH)D concentrations ≥ 40 ng/mL had a significantly reduced diabetes risk. There was no statistically significant interaction between intratrial 25(OH)D and race or between intratrial 25(OH)D and BMI on diabetes risk. CONCLUSIONS Among people with prediabetes, particularly for Black and White race groups and those with BMI < 40 kg/m2, the optimal 25(OH)D concentration may be ≥ 40 ng/mL to optimize diabetes-prevention efforts. Abstract
Despite the growing evidence from meta-analyses on vitamin D's anti-obesity properties, their results are controversial. The current umbrella review was performed to assess the available evidence and provide a conclusive explanation in this regard. The international databases PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science and Google Scholar were systematically searched till March, 2022. A random-effects model was used to run the meta-analysis. All meta-analyses that examined the effect of vitamin D supplementation on BW, BMI, WC, and fat mass were included. Findings of 14 meta-analyses revealed that vitamin D supplementation reduced body mass index (BMI) (ES: -0.11 kg/m2; 95% CI: -0.18, -0.05, p?0.001; I 2 = 61.0%, p < 0.001), and waist circumference (WC) (ES = -0.79 cm; 95% CI: -1.20, -0.37; p < 0.001; I 2 = 46.5%, p = 0.096) in comparison to control group. However, the effects of vitamin D on body weight (ES = -0.16 kg, 95% CI: -0.36, 0.04; p = 0.125; I 2 = 57.0%, p = 0.017), and fat mass (ES: 0.02, 95% CI: -0.20, 0.24, p = 0.868; I 2 = 0.0%, p = 0.531) were not considerable. Vitamin D supplementation significantly improved levels of obesity indices such as BMI, and WC.

Abstract
AIMS Direct and indirect evidence were combined in this systematic-review and network meta-analysis (NMA) to assess and compare the effect of nutritional supplements on glycemic control, and rank the supplements accordingly. METHODS PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched up to April 2021. We included randomized controlled trials that investigated the effect of vitamins D, C, and E, magnesium, zinc, calcium, selenium, and omega-3 on at least one glycemic marker, including glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), fasting blood sugar (FBS), homeostasis model assessment-estimated insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), HOMA-B, and insulin, in adults with type 2 diabetes. To estimate effectiveness of supplements, a random-effects NMA in the Bayesian framework was applied. To assess risk of bias, Cochrane Collaboration Tool was used. RESULTS Analysis of 178 studies indicated that zinc, vitamin D, omega-3, vitamin C, and vitamin E were effective in reducing HbA1c with low certainty. For reduction of FBS, zinc, vitamin D, and vitamin C, and for HOMA-IR, vitamin D were effective with low certainty. None of the supplements were effective in the reduction of insulin and HOMA-B with low certainty. After excluding poor-quality studies, only vitamin D was significantly effective in reducing all of the markers. Consistently, when the analysis was restricted to studies with a duration of ≥12-weeks, vitamin D reduced HbA1c, FBS, and HOMA-IR. CONCLUSIONS Vitamin D supplementation was more effective compared to other supplements in improving HbA1c, FBS, and HOMA-IR, albeit with low certainty of evidence.
