Ruminal passage rate and digestibility of fiber from dairy cows consuming diets containing alfalfa and orchardgrass hays with different concentrations of undegradable neutral detergent fiber (uNDF)

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of feeding diets with different fractions of undegraded NDF (uNDF) and potentially degradable (pdNDF) on ruminal NDF degradation and passage kinetics of lactating dairy cows. Six rumen-cannulated (533 ± 43 kg BW and 122 ± 15 DIM) and 6 non-cannulated (558 ± 62 kg BW and 126 ± 16 DIM) primiparous Holstein dairy cows were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 experimental diets in a crossover design with 2 28-d periods. The experimental diets were formulated to include either alfalfa hay (ALFA) or orchardgrass hay (ORCH) in addition to corn silage. Rations were formulated to contain 30% NDF (DM basis), where the concentrate, corn silage, and each of the hays provided one third of the dietary NDF. The marker dilution technique was used to measure the passage rate utilizing a pulse dose of marked corn silage fiber. On d 17 and 24 of each period, ruminal contents were evacuated to determine ruminal pool size. Following the return of the ruminal contents containing the pulse dose of marked corn silage to the rumen, ruminal grab samples were collected at 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, and 72 h. Samples from each time point were separated into solids and liquid, and the solids were analyzed for NDF, uNDF, and marker concentration. Alfalfa hay had a higher concentration of CP (16.4 vs. 10.7%) and a lower concentration of NDF (38.0 vs. 63.2) than orchardgrass hay. Alfalfa hay had a greater concentration of uNDF than orchardgrass hay (36.5 vs. 32.8% uNDF; NDF basis). Cows consuming the ALFA diet had similar milk yield (39.1 kg/d) and similar milk fat and protein concentrations (3.72% fat and 3.24% protein, respectively) than cows consuming the ORCH diet. Cows consuming the ALFA diet consumed more DM (26.7 vs. 24.6 kg/d) and uNDF (2.7 vs. 2.3 kg/d), than cows consuming the ORCH diet. Cows consuming the ALFA diet digested more NDF and pdNDF than cows consuming the ORCH diet (3.3 vs. 2.8 kg/d). Even though cows consuming the ALFA diet had a smaller pool size of NDF than cows consuming the ORCH diet (5.4 vs. 6.7 kg), the pool size of uNDF did not differ between groups (2.4 kg). Cows consuming the ALFA diet had a faster rate of passage of uNDF than cows consuming the ORCH diet (5.02 vs. 4.03%/h). This translated into a shorter mean retention time of uNDF for cows consuming the ALFA diet relative to cows consuming the ORCH diet (21.0 vs. 26.2 h). In conclusion, cows consuming diets containing alfalfa hay had a faster ruminal passage rate and a shorter mean retention time of uNDF than cows consuming diets containing orchardgrass hay, and this occurred despite the greater concentrations of dietary uNDF in the alfalfa-based diet. These findings suggest that the kinetics of ruminal digestion and passage influence NDF degradation in ways beyond uNDF concentration or forage quality.

A meta-analysis of the relationship between milk protein production and absorbed amino acids and digested energy in dairy cattle

Milk protein production is the largest draw on AA supplies for lactating dairy cattle. Prior NRC predictions of milk protein production have been absorbed protein (MP)-based and used a first-limiting nutrient concept to integrate the effects of energy and protein, which yielded poor accuracy and precision (root mean squared error [RMSE] >21%). Using a meta-data set gathered, various alternative equation forms considering MP, absorbed total EAA, absorbed individual EAA, and digested energy (DE) supplies as additive drivers of production were evaluated, and all were found to be superior in statistical performance to the first limitation approach (RMSE = 14%-15%). Inclusion of DE intake and a quadratic term for MP or absorbed EAA supplies were found to be necessary to achieve intercept estimates (nonproductive protein use) that were similar to the factorial estimates of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (2021). The partial linear slope for MP was found to be 0.409, which is consistent with the observed slope bias of -0.34 g/g when a slope of 0.67 was used for MP efficiency in a first-limiting nutrient system. Replacement of MP with the supplies of individual absorbed EAA expressed in grams per day and a common quadratic across the EAA resulted in unbiased predictions with improved statistical performance as compared with MP-based models. Based on Akaike's information criterion and biological consistency, the best equations included absorbed His, Ile, Lys, Met, Thr, the NEAA, and individual DE intakes from fatty acids, NDF, residual OM, and starch. Several also contained a term for absorbed Leu. These equations generally had RMSE of 14.3% and a concordance correlation of 0.76. Based on the common quadratic and individual linear terms, milk protein response plateaus were predicted at approximately 320 g/d of absorbed His, Ile, and Lys; 395 g/d of absorbed Thr; 550 g/d of absorbed Met; and 70 g/d of absorbed Leu. Therefore, responses to each except Leu are almost linear throughout the normal in vivo range. De-aggregation of the quadratic term and parsing to individual absorbed EAA resulted in nonbiological estimates for several EAA indicating over-parameterization. Expression of the EAA as g/100 g total absorbed EAA or as ratios of DE intake and using linear and quadratic terms for each EAA resulted in similar statistical performance, but the solutions had identifiability problems and several nonbiological parameter estimates. The use of ratios also introduced nonlinearity in the independent variables which violates linear regression assumptions. Further screening of the global model using absorbed EAA expressed as grams per day with a common quadratic using an all-models approach, and exhaustive cross-evaluation indicated the parameter estimates for BW, all 4 DE terms, His, Ile, Lys, Met, and the common quadratic term were stable, whereas estimates for Leu and Thr were known with less certainty. Use of independent and additive terms and a quadratic expression in the equation results in variable efficiencies of conversion. The additivity also provides partial substitution among the nutrients. Both of these prevent establishment of fixed nutrient requirements in support of milk protein production.

Meta-analysis of apparent ruminal synthesis and postruminal flow of B vitamins in dairy cows

As milk production has significantly increased over the past decade(s), existing estimates of the B-vitamin needs of the modern dairy cow are currently being reconsidered, as suboptimal B-vitamin supply may affect metabolic efficiency. At the same time, however, "true" (i.e., biologically active forms, excluding nonfunctional analogs) B-vitamin supply also cannot be adequately estimated by dietary intake, as the rumen microbiota has been shown to play a significant role in synthesis and utilization of B vitamins. Given their complex impact on the metabolism of dairy cows, incorporating these key nutrients into the next generation of mathematical models could help to better predict animal production and performance. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to generate hypotheses of regulation in the absence of supplemental B vitamins by creating empirical models, through a meta-analysis, to describe true B-vitamin supply to the cow (postruminal flow, PRF) and apparent ruminal synthesis (ARS). The database used for this meta-analysis consisted of 340 individual cow observations from 15 studies with 16 experiments, where diet and postruminal digesta samples were (post hoc) analyzed for content of B vitamins (B₁, B₂, B₃, B₆, B₉, B₁₂). Equations of univariate and multivariate linear form were considered. Models describing ARS considered dry matter intake (DMI, kg/d), B-vitamin dietary concentration [mg/kg of dry matter (DM)] and rumen-level variables such as rumen digestible neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and starch (g/kg of DM), total volatile fatty acids (VFA, mM), acetate, propionate, butyrate, and valerate molar proportions (% of VFA), mean pH, and fractional rates of degradation of NDF and starch (%/h). Models describing PRF considered dietary-level driving variables such as DMI, B-vitamin dietary concentration (mg/kg of DM), starch and crude protein (g/kg of DM) and forage NDF (g/kg of DM). Equations developed were required to contain all significant slope parameters and contained no significant collinearity between driving variables. Concordance correlation coefficient was used to evaluate the models on the developmental data set due to data scarcity. Overall, modeling ARS yielded better-performing models compared with modeling PRF, and DMI was included in all prediction equations as a scalar variable. The B-vitamin dietary concentration had a negative effect on the ARS of B₁, B₂, B₃, and B₆ but increased the PRF of B₂ and B₉. The rumen digestible NDF concentration had a negative effect on the ARS of B₂, B₃, and B₆, whereas rumen digestible starch concentration had a negative effect on the ARS of B₁ and a positive effect on the ARS of B₉. In the best prediction models, the dietary starch increased PRF of B₁, B₂, and B₉ but decreased PRF of B₁₂. The equations developed may be used to better understand the effect of diet and ruminal environment on the true supply of B vitamins to the dairy cow and stimulate the development of better-defined requirements in the future.

Effects of feeding level and NDF content of grass-clover silages on chewing activity, fecal particle size and NDF digestibility in dairy heifers

The objective of this study was to assess effects of feed intake and NDF content of highly digestible grass-clover silage on chewing behavior, fecal particle size distribution and apparent digestibility in restrictively fed heifers. Four grass-clover silages (Lolium perenne, Trifolium pratense and Trifolium repens) were harvested in 2009 at different regrowth stages, resulting in silages with NDF contents of 312, 360, 371 and 446 g/kg dry matter (DM), respectively. Four rumen-fistulated Jersey heifers (343 ± 32 kg BW) were fed silage at 90% of ad libitum levels in a 4 × 4 Latin square design, replicated with further restricted feeding levels (50%, 60%, 70% or 80% of ad libitum) in a balanced 4 × 4 × 4 Greco-Latin square design. Eating activity was estimated from test meal observations, while rumination activity was estimated from jaw movements logged by a jaw recorder system. Total tract digestibility was estimated from chromic oxide marker and fecal spot sampling, and fecal particle size distribution in washed and freeze-dried particulate DM was determined by dry sieving (2.36, 1.0, 0.5, 0.212 and 0.106 mm, and bottom bowl). Higher NDF content of silage stimulated longer eating time per kg DM intake (P<0.001), while reduced feeding level caused a reduction in eating time per kg DM intake (P<0.001) and NDF (P<0.001). Rumination time per kg DM intake (P<0.01) increased with reduced feeding level, with less effect of feeding level at lower NDF contents (P<0.01) and more rumination with greater NDF content (P<0.01). Relative to NDF intake, rumination time increased with greater NDF content (P<0.01), at a higher rate with reduced feeding level (P<0.05). Digestibility of potentially digestible NDF (DNDF) decreased with greater NDF content (P<0.001) and increased with reduced feeding level (P<0.05). Increasing NDF content resulted in more particulate DM in feces (g/kg DM; P<0.05) and larger mean particle size (P<0.001). In conclusion, feeding heifers with grass-clover silages of decreasing NDF content increased chewing time relative to NDF intake, reduced mean fecal particle size, and increased DNDF digestibility. Restricting feeding level made heifers eat for a shorter time period while rumination and total chewing was increased, causing the ratio between eating and rumination time to decrease with lower intake of forage fiber. Particle size reduction and digestibility depended mostly on changes in NDF content, especially the indigestible NDF content.
