Abstract
Increasing nutrient supply to dairy calves has well known benefits; however, the effects of milk replacer (MR) composition when supplied in higher amounts are not fully understood, particularly in the first weeks of life. To better understand the metabolism of macronutrient supply in young calves (21 d old), we investigated diurnal patterns of heat production and substrate oxidation in young calves fed MR with an incremental supply of fat, lactose, or protein. Thirty-two groups of 3 mixed-sex Holstein-Friesian newborn calves (3.4 ± 1.6 d of age), were randomly assigned to one of 4 dietary treatments and studied for 21 d. Diets consisted of a basal MR (23.3% CP, 21.2% EE, and 48.8% lactose of DM) fed at 550 kJ/kg BW0.85 per day (CON; n = 24), or the basal MR incrementally supplied with 126 kJ of digestible energy/BW0.85 per day as milk fat (+FAT; n = 23), lactose (+LAC; n = 24), or milk protein (+PRO; n = 23). Calves were fed MR in 2 daily meals and had ad libitum access to water, but were not supplied with any calf starter nor forage. After 2 weeks of adaptation to the diets, groups of 3 calves were placed for 1 wk in an open-circuit respiration chamber for nitrogen and energy balance measurements (lasting 7 d). On d 3, glucose oxidation kinetics was estimated by using [U-13C]glucose. Measurements included total heat production (total energy [HP], activity [Hact] expenditure, resting metabolic rate [RMR]), respiration quotient (RQ), carbohydrate (COX) and fat oxidation (FOX) in 10 min. intervals and averaging these values per hour over days. Incremental supply of lactose and fat increased body fat deposition, with observed patterns in RMR indicating that this increase occurred primarily after the meals. Specifically, the average daily RMR was highest in the +PRO group and lowest in the CON treatment. The HP was higher in the +PRO group and throughout the day, hourly means of HP were higher in this treatment mainly caused by an increase in Hact. The recovery of 13CO2 from oral pulse-dosed [U-13C]glucose was high (77%), and not significantly different between treatments, indicating that ingested lactose was oxidized to a similar extent across treatments. Increasing lactose supply in young calves increased fat retention by reduction in fatty oxidation. Calves fed a MR with additional protein or fat raised RMR persistently throughout the day, whereas the extra lactose supply only affects RMR after the meal. Dietary glucose was almost completely oxidized (77% based on (13C) glucose measurement) regardless of nutrient supplementation. Extra protein supply increased HP and FOX compared with similar intakes of fat and lactose. Fasting heat production (FHP) of young, group-housed calves is comparable to literature values and unaffected by energy intake. Overall, these findings deepen our understanding of how different nutrients affect metabolic processes, fat retention, and energy expenditure in young dairy calves.

Abstract
The first calf paper, published in the May 1919 issue of the Journal of Dairy Science (JDS), described factors affecting birth body weight of different breeds of calves. Other studies were done on nonmilk ingredients, growth charts were developed, and early weaning was followed to conserve milk fed to calves. Calf papers did not report use of statistics to control or record variation or to determine whether treatment means were different. Many experiments were more observational than comparative. Typically fewer than 5 calves, and sometimes 1 or 2 calves, were used per treatment. During the next 20 yr, calf studies increased and included colostrum feeding, milk and milk replacer feeding, minerals and vitamins, and fats and oils. Many concepts fundamental to current knowledge and understanding of digestion, rumen development, and milk replacer formulation were developed during this period. In addition, the concept of using antibiotic growth promoters in dairy calf diets was first evaluated and developed during the 1950s. During the 20-yr period of January 1957 through December 1976, a large number of universities in the United States and 1 in Canada contributed almost 150 papers on a variety of calf-related topics. These topics included genetics, physiology of the calf, review of calf immunity, antibiotic feeding, and milk replacer ingredients. This became the golden era of calf rumen development studies, which also engendered studies of calf starter rations and ingredients. A classic review of management, feeding, and housing studies summarized research related to calf feeding and management systems up to that point with an emphasis on maintaining calf growth and health while reducing labor and feed costs. It was also during this period that metric measurements replaced English units. In the 20-yr period from 1977 to 1996, more than 400 articles on calf nutrition and management were published in JDS. With the growing research interest in calves, a paper outlining standardized procedures for conducting and reporting data from calf experiments was first published. A very active area of calf nutrition research from the late 1970s to the mid 1980s was colostrum quality, feeding, and preservation; more than 60 such research articles were published in the journal during this time. Various nonmilk protein sources were evaluated. Extensive studies were done evaluating trace and major mineral requirements in calves along with some vitamin studies. Throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, the primary objective of most calf research was how to wean healthy, adequately grown calves at an early age-generally less than 30 d of age. This program was reviewed in a 1979 publication. Research on calf starter ingredients, nutrient composition, and additives was minimal in the 1980s and 1990s given the importance of starter intake to the success of early weaning, but the role of water intake in starter intake and growth was established. Research on issues with calves continued to increase during the last 20-yr period as evidenced by publication of more than 580 articles in JDS as well as many more in other refereed journals. In addition to papers contributed by several universities in the United States and Canada, the number of papers authored by scientists at universities and institutes in other countries increased dramatically during this period. Factors influencing colostral antibody absorption, heat treatment of colostrum, and efficacy of colostrum supplements and replacers were reported. Most studies in this period related to nutrition. Studies were published supporting greater neonatal growth rates from feeding more milk replacer but with a higher crude protein content than traditional. Protein energy effects on growth and body composition were evaluated in concert with greater growth rates. Milk and nonmilk protein sources in milk replacers along with AA supplementation were evaluated. Limited studies were done with fat sources and fatty acid supplementation along with trace minerals and fat-soluble vitamins. Waste milk feeding and heat treatment became more prevalent. Studies established starter ingredient palatability and use of forage when fed with pelleted starters. With the advent of automatic milk and milk replacer feeders, factors influencing how and when to wean were established. Research programs established factors affecting calf behavior and welfare. Several databases were evaluated along with various published studies, and established calf growth during the first 2 mo was subsequently reflected in first- and later-lactation milk production of those calves. A new area of calf research that emerged from 1997 on was the effects of maternal environment and nutrition on calf health, growth, and future productivity. From a mechanistic standpoint, the field of epigenetics seems likely to explain many of these phenomena. Some possibilities for future calf nutrition and management were elaborated.

Abstract
The use of animals from dairy farms is an alternative to meat production since it provides an increment of total income for farmers. This study aims to evaluate the performance of Holstein calves finished in two feeding systems (feedlot or pasture). Forty-three animals with 58 days old and 57 kg were divided in two treatments: 23 animals finished in feedlot with corn silage plus concentrate based on corn and soybean meal (40:60); 20 animals kept in cultivated pastures according to the period of the year: Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) and pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum) with supplementation with the same feedlot-concentrate at 1% body weight. Animals were slaughtered with 200 kg. Dry matter and nutrient intake were determined, with the use of chromium oxide for estimating pasture intake. Feedlot animals had greater total intake and total digestible nutrients, resulting in higher average daily gain (0.949 vs 0.694 kg day-1). Crude protein intake, neutral detergent fiber and feed conversion did not show significant differences. Holstein calves have improved performance when finished in feedlot.

Abstract
Estimation of metabolizable energy (ME) requirement for maintenance (ME) and growth (ME) in pre-weaned lambs have been limited to milk-only fed lambs. This study aimed to determine energy and nitrogen metabolisability of milk and pellets when fed together, compare the growth and chemical body composition of lambs fed varying levels of pellets in addition to milk, and to estimate ME, ME, and the CP:ME ratio requirements for growth. The study included 32 twin-born Romney-cross ram lambs. Four lambs were slaughtered at 24 h post-partum to estimate initial body composition and the remaining 28 were assigned to 1 of 4 treatment groups of 7. Group 1 was fed milk replacer (MR) only; group 2 was fed MR and allowed ad libitum access to pellets; groups 3 and 4 were offered 30% and 60%, respectively of the average pellet intake of the ad libitum group the previous day while being fed MR. Milk replacer was fed as a proportion of the lamb's live weight (LW). Lambs from each treatment were placed in metabolic cages at 17 kg LW for 4 d to allow for total fecal and urine collection. All lambs were slaughtered at 18 kg LW. The ADG, ADG:ME ratio, stomach and liver weight, and rumen papillae lengths increased ( < 0.05) with increasing pellet intake. Increasing daily ME intake increased ( < 0.05) both daily energy and protein deposition but had no effect ( > 0.05) on fat deposition. However, the total chemical body composition was unaffected ( > 0.05) by dietary treatment. Digestibility of energy and N decreased ( < 0.05) with increasing ME intake. Percent energy and N retained for growth were 96% vs. 71% and 72% vs. 30% for milk and pellets, respectively. The ME and ME values obtained were 0.40 MJ ME/kg LW·d and 13.8 MJ ME/kg ADG, respectively. The CP:ME ratio of MR and pellet was 11.1 and 15.7, respectively. However, a simulation model suggested that lambs require a CP:ME ratio of 13.1 at 5 kg and 10.9 at 18 kg LW, indicating that protein intake may be limiting to lamb growth in early life and in excess by 18 kg LW. In conclusion, increasing pellet intake was associated with decreased N retention. The inclusion of pellets, however, improved the efficiency of ME utilization for growth in pre-weaned lambs and was beneficial for rumen development. The ME was higher than previously recommended values and the CP:ME intake of lambs does not match their requirements which may warrant further studies.

Understanding oral stereotypies in calves: alternative strategies, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (re)activity and gene by environment interactions. Animal 2016; 11:1054-1062. Abstract
Stereotypies are used as indicators of poor animal welfare and it is, therefore, important to understand underlying factors mediating their development. In calves, two oral stereotypies, that is, tongue playing and object manipulation, result mostly from insufficient structure in the diet. Three hypotheses were studied: (1) oral stereotypies in calves are one of two alternative strategies, the alternative being hypo-activity; (2) stereotyping and non-stereotyping calves differ in terms of cortisol secretion; (3) oral stereotypy development in calves rests on a gene by environment interaction. Eight-week-old bull calves (n=48) were assigned to one of four solid feed allowances (0, 9, 18 or 27 g dry matter/kg metabolic weight per day) with the following composition: 50% concentrate, 25% maize silage and 25% straw on dry matter basis. The calves received milk replacer in buckets, the provision of which was adjusted to achieve equal growth rates. At 14 to 18 weeks of age, calves were exposed to a challenge, that is, tethering inside cages. Oral stereotypies and inactivity were recorded in the home pens in the 4 weeks before the challenge using instantaneous scan sampling. Salivary cortisol levels were measured at -120, +40, +80, +120 min and +48 h relative to the challenge. Individual differences in behaviour were recorded in the first 30 min after challenge implementation using focal animal sampling and continuous recording, and these elements were entered into a principal component (PC) analysis to extract PCs. Regression analyses were performed to find relationships between stereotypies and inactivity, stereotypies and cortisol, and stereotypies and PCs (individual differences, genes) and solid feed (environment). Relationships between PCs and cortisol were also investigated to help with the interpretation of PCs. Hypotheses 1 and 2 were rejected. Hypothesis 3, however, was supported: calves with a zero solid feed allowance, that is, in the most barren environment, showed links between stereotypies and two of the PCs. Calves that displayed high levels of idle and rapid locomotion and low levels of oral contact with the cage during the challenge also displayed high levels of object manipulation in the home pens. Calves that displayed low levels of stepping and turning attempts during the challenge also displayed high levels of tongue playing in the home pens. This study corroborates the gene by environment interaction on the development of oral stereotypies in calves.

Abstract
Urea recycling, with urea originating from catabolism of amino acids and hepatic detoxification of ammonia, is particularly relevant for ruminant animals, in which microbial protein contributes substantially to the metabolizable protein supply. However, the quantitative contribution of urea recycling to protein anabolism in calves during the transition from preruminants (milk-fed calves) to ruminants [solid feed (SF)-fed calves] is unknown. The aim of this study was to quantify urea recycling in milk-fed calves when provided with low-protein SF. Forty-eight calves [164 ± 1.6 kg body weight (BW)] were assigned to 1 of 4 SF levels [0, 9, 18, and 27 g of dry matter (DM) SF · kg BW(-0.75) · d⁻¹] provided in addition to an identical amount of milk replacer. Urea recycling was quantified after a 24-h intravenous infusion of [¹⁵N₂]urea by analyzing urea isotopomers in 68-h fecal and urinary collections. Real-time qPCR was used to measure gene expression levels of bovine urea transporter B (bUTB) and aquaglyceroporin-3 and aquaglyceroporin-7 in rumen wall tissues. For every incremental gram of DM SF intake (g DM · kg(0.75)), nitrogen intake increased by 0.70 g, and nitrogen retention increased by 0.55 g (P < 0.01). Of this increase in nitrogen retention, 19% could be directly explained by urea recycling. Additionally, part of the observed increase in nitrogen retention could be explained by the extra protein provided by the SF and likely by a greater efficiency of postabsorptive use of nitrogen for gain. Ruminal bUTB abundance increased (P < 0.01) with SF provision. Aquaglyceroporin-3 expression increased (P < 0.01) with SF intake, but aquaglyceroporin-7 expression did not. We conclude that in addition to the increase in digested nitrogen, urea recycling contributes to the observed increase in nitrogen retention with increasing SF intake in milk-fed calves. Furthermore, ruminal bUTB and aquaglyceroporin-3 expression are upregulated with SF intake, which might be associated with urea recycling.
