Ketone bodies - causes and effects of their increased presence in cows' body fluids: A review

Ketosis is the most common metabolic disease in high-performance dairy cows during the first 6-8 weeks of lactation. Its main symptoms include an excessive amount of so-called ketone bodies in a cow's body fluids. Ketone bodies consist of β-hydroxybutyric acid (βHBA), acetoacetic acid, and acetone. βHBA is the main component with its share of the total volume of ketone bodies in the blood of about 70%. Clinical symptoms of ketosis in cows include loss of appetite, preference for forage to concentrated feed, and acetone odor in their mouth and urine. Those symptoms are accompanied by a production drop, an increase of concurrent illness (mastitis, metritis, and displaced abomasum), and poor reproductive performance. One of the ketosis characteristic effects is an increase in the level of fat in milk (>5%), while protein levels decrease (<2.9%). In the case of subclinical ketosis (SCK), the fat-protein ratio in milk is increased to above 1.4:1. The current consensus for SCK is to consider a cutoff point of βHBA to be at least 1.2 mmol/L in blood plasma. Ketosis prevention is based on keeping perinatal cows in good condition, that is, with around 3.5 points in the five-point body condition scoring, carefully balancing food doses during the first 2 months of lactation with the correct energy-protein ratio. Glucose precursor products should be administered orally, in particular to at-risk herds. Ketosis occurs in 7-14% on average of the total number of cows in a herd. In general, data on the prevalence of SCK vary considerably, depending on their source. Moreover, the problem is mostly observed in poorly-fed animals with high milk production potential. The objectives of this review are to reveal the current situation of ketosis prevalence, the possibility of diagnosis, consequences in dairy cows and to provide some recommendations for ketosis treatment and prevention.

Factors associated with estrous expression and subsequent fertility in lactating dairy cows using automated activity monitoring

The objective of this observational study was to identify factors associated with estrous duration (DU) and intensity measured as the peak of activity (PA) change and subsequent fertility in lactating Holstein cows using a neck-mounted automated activity monitor (Heatime Pro, SCR Engineers Ltd., Netanya, Israel). Ambient temperature and relative humidity were recorded hourly to calculate the temperature-humidity index (THI). A total of 5,933 estrus events from 3,132 cows located on 8 commercial dairy farms in Germany were used for this study. Farms participated in monthly DHIA testing. Pregnancy diagnosis was performed either by transrectal palpation [farm 1: 42 ± 3 d; farm 3: 40 ± 3 d; farms 4 and 8: 38 ± 3 d; farm 5: 43 ± 3 d after artificial insemination (AI)] or transrectal ultrasonography (farms 2, 6, and 7: 30 ± 3 d after AI). Estrous intensity was categorized based on peak activity of estrus into low (35-89 index value), and high (90-100 index value) PA. Overall, 73.5% of estrus events were of high PA. The mean (± standard error of the mean) DU was 14.94 ± 0.06 h. There was a strong correlation between DU and PA (r = 0.67). In the final statistical model, only PA was associated with pregnancy per artificial insemination (P/AI), with 1.35 greater odds of pregnancy for cows with high PA compared with cows with low PA. Increased THI 1 wk before AI was associated with shorter DU, lower PA, and decreased P/AI. A small percentage of cows (4.7%) showed short interestrus intervals (i.e., more than 1 activity peak within 7 d close to the event of estrus), resulting in reduced DU, PA, and P/AI. The change of weighted rumination was associated with DU and PA, as a lower nadir was associated with a greater risk for high PA and long DU. There was no association, however, between the nadir of change of weighted rumination and P/AI. Whereas milk yield and somatic cell count from the DHIA test date before AI were negatively associated with estrous expression, neither milk yield nor somatic cell count was associated with P/AI. Surprisingly, multiparous cows expressed estrus with longer DU (13.15 ± 0.31 h) compared with primiparous cows (12.52 ± 0.32 h), whereas PA did not differ among parities. Pregnancy per AI was greater for primiparous (29.4%) than for multiparous (22.1%) cows. An estrus event with long DU or high PA was more likely later in lactation. Milk fat, milk protein, milk urea nitrogen, and lactose from the DHIA test date closest to AI had no association with estrous expression or P/AI. In conclusion, DU and PA were highly correlated, and cows with high PA were particularly associated with greater odds for pregnancy. A negative association between estrous expression and P/AI was identified for increased THI 1 wk before AI and cows with short interestrus intervals using automated activity monitor.

Herd and environmental determinants of reproductive performance in Swedish dairy herds, 2001-2009

This was a retrospective cohort study of Swedish dairy herds. Summary measures of production and reproductive performance, details of soil, moss mineral concentrations, and temperature and rainfall measurements at each herd location were available for the period September 2001 to August 2009. A Bayesian mixed-effects regression model including spatial and non-spatial heterogeneity terms was developed to quantify associations between hypothesised explanatory variables and mean herd breeding interval, defined as the difference between mean calving to last service interval and mean calving to first service interval for each fiscal year. Mean herd breeding intervals were shorter in herds with greater than 80% Swedish Red Cattle, herds with lower mean age at first calving, herds comprised of older cows and in larger herds. None of the soil composition or moss mineral concentration estimates were associated with mean herd breeding interval and the effect of temperature and rainfall on mean herd breeding interval was small. We conclude that environmental conditions (soil composition, moss mineral concentrations, environmental temperature and rainfall) had relatively minor effects on dairy herd reproductive performance in Sweden between 2001 and 2009.

A longitudinal cohort study of acute puerperal metritis cases in Swedish dairy cows

Background

Acute puerperal metritis affects cows during the early postpartum period and causes fever, fetid vaginal discharge and general depression. The disease is severe and treatment with antimicrobials is often required. This study followed 79 Swedish dairy cows with acute puerperal metritis with registered treatment and outcome in terms of recovery. Bacteria isolated from the uterus and their susceptibility to penicillin were studied. Clinical cases were assigned by participating practitioners who examined the cows, performed uterine swab sampling, decided treatment and provided information about cow health and calving conditions. Fertility and culling data were collected from the official Swedish milk and health recording scheme. Recovery from disease was defined in four levels; as a cow that survived 1 or 4 months, was inseminated and subsequently became pregnant. Intervals from dates of first and latest calving to insemination date were studied.

Results

The most common bacterial findings were a mixed culture of Escherichia coli and bacteria such as Gram positive cocci, Fusobacterium necrophorum, Clostridium spp. or Trueperella pyogenes. The Gram positive cocci, Pasteurella spp. and F. necrophorum were generally susceptible to penicillin. The majority of cows (70%) were treated with penicillin in accordance with the Swedish policy on treatment of metritis while 19% were treated with tetracycline and 8% were not treated with antimicrobials. Recovery rates were similar between treatments. Besides “calving to last insemination” interval (CLI) that was 5 days shorter than the national mean, fertility was slightly reduced compared to national means. “Calving to first insemination” interval (CFI) was 4 days longer than national mean and number of inseminations/cow increased from 1.9 to 2.1. Escherichia coli culture positive cows did not become pregnant to the same extent as cows without E. coli in the uterus (P = 0.046). Twin births resulted in a longer CFI (P = 0.034). The culling rate was generally high (42% within 300 days after occurrence of metritis), though death associated with acute disease was low (6%).

Conclusions

Escherichia coli was the most common bacterial pathogen isolated from cases of acute puerperal metritis in the present study. This bacterium is inherently resistant to penicillin, but although most cows were treated with penicillin, death due to acute disease was low and recovery and final fertility results were acceptable. In times of emerging antimicrobial resistance and demand for prudent antimicrobial use, we suggest that penicillin is a “good enough” choice if antimicrobial treatment of acute puerperal metritis is needed.
