The Impact of Dietary Berberine Supplementation during the Transition Period on Blood Parameters, Antioxidant Indicators and Fatty Acids Profile in Colostrum and Milk of Dairy Goats

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of berberine (BBR) supplementation on productivity, antioxidant markers, and the fatty acid (FA) profile in the colostrum and milk of goats. Twenty-four primiparous Saanen goats were supplemented with 0, 1, 2, and 4 g/d (per goat) of BBR in control (CON), BBR1, BBR2, and BBR4 groups (n = 6 per group), respectively, from 21 days before expected kidding to 21 days after parturition. Blood sampling was carried out at −21, −14, −7, 0, 7, 14, and 21 d relative to delivery. Colostrum was collected within the first and second milking (d 1 of lactation), and milk was harvested weekly after kidding. Both BBR2 and BBR4 increased dry matter intake (DMI) (p ≤ 0.05) and energy balance (EB) as well as colostrum and milk production. Both BBR2 and BBR4 decreased (p ≤ 0.05) plasma levels of cholesterol, haptoglobin, and ceruloplasmin, while elevating the plasma albumin and paraoxonase (p ≤ 0.05), which may indicate that BBR mitigates inflammation during the transition period. BBR reduced (p ≤ 0.05) malondialdehyde (MDA) and increased (p ≤ 0.05) total antioxidant capacity (TAC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and catalase (CAT) in blood, colostrum, and milk. Concentrations of de novo fatty acid in colostrum and milk were increased (p ≤ 0.05) with both BBR2 and BBR4. Free fatty acid (FFA) concentration in colostrum and milk fat were lower (p ≤ 0.05) in BBR2 and BBR4 compared to CON. The concentration of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) in colostrum and milk fat increased (p ≤ 0.05) with BBR2 and BBR4, while unsaturated fatty acids (USFAs) decreased (p ≤ 0.05) in milk. In summary, supplementation with at least 2 g/d BBR may enhance the EB and antioxidant status of dairy goats.

Udder Health for Dairy Goats

Staphylococcus aureus is the most important cause of clinical mastitis in goats, and non-aureus staphylococci is the most common isolate from subclinical mastitis. Environmental streptococci are a severe problem. Somatic cell counts and California mastitis test are a screening test for mastitis and an indicator of poor udder health, but values should be interpreted differently than with dairy cattle. Somatic cell scores likely are a more useful way of viewing data. High bacterial counts in milk are common; mastitis may be involved as a cause. Proper udder preparation, milking procedure, and postmilking management are key factors in mastitis control.

The effect of measure number of milk production (MP) on the estimation of parameters in typical and extended lactations curve parameters of local goats was evaluated. This study was conducted with 14 producers in 5 communities of the Comarca Lagunera, State of Coahuila, México. MP was measured monthly by hand-milking during 4 years. Data analyzed included 12,097 observations belonging to 2,229 lactations from 1,125 local goats. The Wood model was utilized to characterize the lactation curve and its parameters (a, b, and c). Two groups were formed, G1 (typical lactation with 3-7 milk measures), and G2 (extended lactations with 8-10 milk measures). The criterion utilized to determine the adequate number of MP measures during lactation was the standard error of the estimate. The best fit in the estimation of the curve parameters was obtained in G2. Factors affecting the curve parameters were also evaluated utilizing the MIXED procedure of SAS. Community, year, and parity number influenced all the parameters in both groups. Flock within community influenced b and c in G1. Season of parity influenced c in G2. It is concluded that a higher measure number of MP in an extended lactation helps in better estimation of lactation curve parameters.

Impact of Extended Lactation on Fatty Acid Profile and Milk Composition of Dual Purpose Tropical Goat

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

Extended lactation has been implemented to increase milk yield in limited case. There is need further investigation in term of milk composition, fatty acid profile and milk flavour as recommendation for further implementation.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The study lasted from July-September, 2017, used thirty lactating Etawah Crossbred goats in small farms of Sleman, Yogyakarta. Samples were collected from normal period and extended lactation which lasted for 2-3 months and longer than 10 months, respectively. The data on milk yield, composition, physical quality, fatty acids profile, sensory properties and nutrient consumption were measured on samples of 14 consecutive days. Assessments were done in Faculty of Animal Science and Integrated Research Laboratory, Universitas Gadjah Mada. Statistical analysis used ANOVA and Kruskal Wallis test and were processed with SPSS programme version 16.

RESULTS

Extended lactation did not affect milk yield and nutrient consumption of goat but caused higher content of milk fat, protein, total solid, acidity, caprylic, capric and total short-chain fatty acids in compared with normal lactation (p<0.05). The average values were 5.33, 4.40, 15.85, 0.30, 1.99, 9.10 and 12.13% vs. 3.75, 3.64, 13.55, 0.26, 1.69, 7.09 and 9.76% of total fatty acids in milk, respectively. Fatty acid profile did not associate with milk flavour.

CONCLUSION

Composition, acidity and short chain fatty acids content in milk of extended lactation were higher than in normal period but did not change milk flavour.

Invited review: Cessation of lactation: Effects on animal welfare

The forced cessation of milk production, or dry-off, is a routine management practice in dairy cattle, sheep, and goats. This practice initiates a dry period, during which the animal is not milked. Milking begins again after parturition. Most of the literature on the dry period has focused on how various drying-off strategies affect milk production and disease; little work to date has addressed how dry-off affects the overall welfare of the dairy animal. The first aim of this review was to present an overview of the importance of dry-off and how it is commonly achieved. Our review shows that much scientific progress has been made in improving health status between lactations. The second aim was to identify important gaps in the literature, of which 2 key research disparities have been identified. We find that much of the work to date has focused on cattle and very little research has examined dry-off in dairy sheep and goats. We also find a lack of research addressing how common dry-off methodologies affect animal welfare on more than just a biological level, regardless of species.
