Factors affecting milk yield and reproductive performance

Dairy Herd Improvement testing records of 201 dairy herds of sizes from under 100 to over 1000 cows and herd average milk yields from under 5,000 to over 10,000 kg were studied. Average days to first postpartum breeding tended to be less in herds of over 500 cows. Herds of 300 to 600 cows had highest production per cow. Herds with higher average yields averaged shorter intervals to first postpartum breeding and fewer days open. Days open included farrow cows arbitrarily assigned 305 days open. Number of breedings changed little as herd yield increased, but days open for highest producing herds averaged one estrous period shorter than for low producing herds, suggesting better detection of estrus. For the individual cow, high yield or associated factors have a small but real antagonistic association with reproductive efficiency. Days to first breeding, to last breeding, and days open increased .27, .80, and .61, and number of breedings increased .014 for each 100 kg increase in 180-day yield of fat-corrected milk. The record averages of high-producing herds indicate this antagonism may be overshawdowed by good management; effective estrus detection probably is a major factor.

Variables associated with peripartum traits in dairy cows. I. Effect of dietary forages and disorders on voluntary intake of feed, body weight and milk yield

Daily voluntary intakes of feed by each of 89 Holstein cows were compared between day 220 of gestation and day 30 postpartum over a 21-month period. Diets designed to meet NRC requirements and which contained either chopped hay (29 cows), hay crop silage (HCS; 30 cows) or corn silage (CS; 30 cows) were compared prepartum (27 to 0 days), peripartum (1 day before to 3 days after calving) and postpartum (days 4 to 30 postpartum). Mixed rations, fed during lactation, were 60% forage and 40% concentrate dry matter (DM). Cow management was similar to commercial operations. The experimental hypothesis was that pre-disposition for partum and postpartum disorders (abnormal) could be related either to voluntary intake of different diets or to physical traits. Intakes (DM or estimated net energy) across diets decreased 30% between days 7 and 1 prepartum and averaged 18% and 20% lower peripartum and postpartum, respectively, in abnormal cows than in control cows. Seasonal effects on intakes were significant. In general, changes in body weight and condition and differences in udder edema and milk yield reflected intakes. The results support the original hypothesis.

A health program for commercial dairy herds. 3. Changes in reproductive performance

A health program service was implemented on 9 farms, for periods ranging up to 7 years. Reproductive performance was substantially improved, when performance indicators were compared with values for the herds prior to commencement of the service. On average, the mean calving to conception intervals for the herds were reduced by 24 days over their periods of participation in the program, from an initial value of 119 days. The intercalving interval was reduced by an average of 27 days. This improvement was associated with a reduction in the mean dry period length of 20 days, from an initial value of 117 days. There was a tendency for the lactation lengths to be reduced to an undesirable extent due to slow adaptation by management to the improvement in reproductive performance, but the problem was corrected late in the study. The improvement in performance was attributed to improved oestrus detection, correction of temporary nutritional deficiencies, and prompt treatment of genital tract disorders in individual animals. Results for a range of performance indicators related to reproductive function are reported in detail.
