Trace Mineral Metabolism: The Maternal-Fetal Bond

Trace minerals are essential nutrients that have many biologic functions, many of which are related to metabolic activities, immune function, and antioxidant capacity. The pregnant dam provides essential nutrients to support fetal development, including trace minerals. Milk is known to be an insufficient source of many trace minerals during the early nursing neonatal period. The fetal liver is capable of concentrating minerals to generate a reserve for use during postnatal life; however, the sufficiency of this reserve is dependent upon maternal mineral status. Appropriate mineral supplementation in the gestational diet is critical to supporting fetal development, maintaining adequate antioxidant capacity to survive the birthing process, and sustain immune function and growth of the newborn animal.

Revisiting the Effects of Different Dietary Sources of Selenium on the Health and Performance of Dairy Animals: a Review

Selenium (Se) is one of the most important essential trace elements in livestock production. It is a structural component in at least 25 selenoproteins such as the iodothyronine deiodinases and thioredoxin reductases as selenocysteine at critical positions in the active sites of these enzymes. It is also involved in the synthesis of the thyroid hormone and influences overall body metabolism. Selenium being a component of the glutathione peroxidase enzyme also plays a key role in the antioxidant defense system of animals. Dietary requirements of Se in dairy animals depend on physiological status, endogenous Se content, Se source, and route of administration. Most of the dietary Se is absorbed through the duodenum in ruminants and also some portion through the rumen wall. Inorganic Se salts such as Na-selenate and Na-selenite have shown lower bioavailability than organic and nano-Se. Selenium deficiency has been associated with reproductive disorders such as retained placenta, abortion, early embryonic death, and infertility, together with muscular diseases (like white muscle disease and skeletal and cardiac muscle necrosis). The deficiency of Se can also affect the udder health particularly favoring clinical and subclinical mastitis, along with an increase of milk somatic cell counts in dairy animals. However, excessive Se supplementation (5 to 8 mg/kg DM) can lead to acute toxicity including chronic and acute selenosis. Se is the most vital trace element for the optimum performance of dairy animals. This review focuses to provide insights into the comparative efficacy of different forms of dietary Se (inorganic, organic, and nano-Se) on the health and production of dairy animals and milk Se content.

Incidence risk of bronchopneumonia in newborn calves associated with intrauterine diselementosis

Background and Aim

Macro- and micro-elements are required to ensure the normal course of biochemical processes in the development of an animal's body. Any excess, deficiency, or imbalance in chemical elements in an animal's body can cause the development of various latent or clinically expressed pathological conditions. Diselementosis in pregnant cows may lead to impaired embryo and fetal development, as well as reduced neonatal viability. The aim of this study was to analyze the content of macroelements and microelements in the blood serum of both calving cows and their calves to evaluate the relationship between indicators of mineral metabolism in the mother and newborn and to establish what role separate chemical elements play in making newborn calves more prone to bronchopneumonia.

Materials and Methods

The content of potassium (K), sodium (Na), iron (Fe), Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), Strontium (Sr), arsenic (As), nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), molybdenum (Mo), and selenium (Se) in the blood serum of 33 pregnant cows between 239 and 262 days of gestation and their 33 1-day old calves was determined using the Shimadzu AA6300 (Japan) atomic adsorption spectrophotometer. Calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) content was determined using ion-selective electrodes from the Olympus-400 analyzer (Beckman Coulter, USA). During the 1^st month of life, all calves in the sample set had some sort of respiratory diseases and seven of the calves had bronchopneumonia. Retrospectively, the samples of adult and newborn animals were divided into two groups each: Dams I - cows whose calves had uncomplicated bronchitis (n=26); Dams II - cows whose calves got bronchopneumonia (n=7); and Newborns I - calves with uncomplicated bronchitis (n=26); Newborns II - calves with bronchopneumonia (n=7).

Results

The content of Ca, Mg, K, Na, Mo, and Se in dams in both groups of cows was within the reference range; the concentrations of Fe and Ni were higher than the reference range; and the concentrations of Cu, Zn, As, Co, and Cr were lower than the reference range. There were no significant differences in elemental status between the Dams I and Dams II groups. In newborn calves, the concentration of Ca and Mo corresponded to the reference range; the concentrations of Mg, Fe, Co, and Ni in both groups exceeded the reference range; and the concentrations of Cu, Zn, As, Cr, and Se were lower than the reference range. Results highlighted that there was a tendency to decrease concentration of Fe, Mo, and Se and a significant increase in the Ni concentration in calves of the Newborns II group compared with calves of the Newborns I group. It was also found that Zn, Co, Cr, and Mo actively accumulated in the body of newborn animals while the transplacental transfer of Cu, As, and Sr was limited; and transfer of Se and Ni was regulated by concentration ratios in the blood of the mother and the fetus. The excessive concentrations of Ni and Fe in the blood serum of cows and calves and the imbalance in the ratio of elements Fe-Cu-Zn, Fe-Cu-Co negatively affected erythropoiesis, formation of the immune system, and antioxidant status of the fetus and newborn. These changes were considered to be risk factors for the development of bronchopneumonia in calves.

Conclusion

An excess of serum Fe and Ni and deficiency of Cu, Zn, As, Co, and Cr in cows during the gestation period can lead to similar impairments of the mineral status in newborn calves. At the systemic level, dyslementosis in combination with the influence of other adverse factors, can lead to an increased load on the respiratory and hematopoietic systems of calves during postnatal adaptation and can subsequently cause a decrease in the natural resistance of calves and development of bronchopneumonia.

Selenium in Cattle: A Review

This review article examines the role of selenium (Se) and the effects of Se supplementation especially in the bovine species. Selenium is an important trace element in cattle. Some of its roles include the participation in the antioxidant defense the cattle farms. The nutritional requirements of Se in cattle are estimated at 100 μg/kg DM (dry matter) for beef cattle and at 300 μg/kg DM for dairy cows. The rations high in fermentable carbohydrates, nitrates, sulfates, calcium or hydrogen cyanide negatively influence the organism's use of the selenium contained in the diet. The Se supplementation may reduce the incidence of metritis and ovarian cysts during the postpartum period. The increase in fertility when adding Se is attributed to the reduction of the embryonic death during the first month of gestation. A use of organic Se in feed would provide a better transfer of Se in calves relative to mineral Se supplementation. The addition of Se yeasts in the foodstuffs of cows significantly increases the Se content and the percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in milk compared to the addition of sodium selenite. The enzyme 5-iodothyronine deiodinase is a seleno-dependent selenoprotein. It is one of the last proteins to be affected in the event of Se deficiency. This delay in response could explain the fact that several studies did not show the effect of Se supplementation on growth and weight gain of calves. Enrichment of Se in the diet did not significantly affect the slaughter weight and carcass yield of bulls. The impact and results of Se supplementation in cattle depend on physiological stage, Se status of animals, type and content of Se and types of Se administration. Further studies in Se supplementation should investigate the speciation of Se in food and yeasts, as well as understanding their metabolism and absorption. This constitute a path to exploit in order to explain certain different effects of Se.

Individual intake of free-choice mineral mix by grazing beef cows may be less than typical formulation assumptions and form of selenium in mineral mix affects blood Se concentrations of cows and their suckling calves

The objectives of this study were to determine (1) the individual ad libitum intake of mineral mix by beef cows managed under a year-long, fall-calving, forage-based production regimen and (2) if Se form in the mineral mix affected the blood Se concentrations of cows and suckling calves. Twenty-four late-gestation (6 to 8 months) Angus-cross cows (2.7 ± 0.8 years; body weight [BW] = 585 ± 58 kg) were blocked by BW and randomly assigned (n = 8) to a mineral supplement treatment (TRT) containing 35 ppm Se as either inorganic (ISe; sodium selenite), organic (OSe; Sel-Plex®), or a 1:1 combination of ISe/OSe (MIX). Cows commonly grazed a 10.1-ha predominately tall fescue pasture and had individual ad libitum access to TRT using in-pasture Calan gates. Cows calved from August to November and calves had common ad libitum access to creep feed and a mineral supplement that lacked Se. Cow jugular blood was taken at 28-day intervals (13 periods) and calf blood was taken with cows from birth through weaning. Individual cow mineral mix (mean = 54.0 ± 7.0 g/day, range = 97.3 to 27.9 ± 7.4 g/day) and Se (mean = 1.82 ± 0.25 mg/day, range = 3.31 to 0.95 ± 0.25 mg/day) intakes were affected by period (P < 0.0001), but not by cow Se TRT (P > 0.30). Cow blood Se (0.109 to 0.229 ± 0.01 μg/mL) was affected (P < 0.002) by period, Se form, and their interaction, with ISe < MIX for periods 8 and 11, ISe < OSe for all periods except period 1, and MIX < OSe for periods 2 to 4, 7, 8, 10, and 12. Calf blood Se (in micrograms Se per milliliter) was correlated with cow blood Se and affected (P < 0.0001) by cow Se TRT, with ISe (0.07 to 0.11) < MIX (0.10 to 0.15) = OSe (0.16 to 0.19). These data reveal that (1) mean supplemental ad libitum cow mineral intake was 36% less than the typical formulation intake expectations (85 g/day) and, correspondingly, mean supplemental Se intake was 33% less than that allowed by the FDA and (2) cow Se TRT differentially affected both cow and calf blood Se concentrations, resulting in adequate concentrations for all cows but inadequate concentrations for ISe calves.

Nutrient and immunity transfer from cow to calf pre- and postcalving

Nutritional and management strategies for dairy cattle are designed to prepare the cow for lactation and to minimize the incidence of metabolic diseases around calving. However, strategies initiated during the dry period should also consider the potential effects on the calf prior to and after calving. Fetal requirements for energy and protein are significant, particularly during the last trimester of gestation. Energy requirements increase to 1.3 to 1.5 times maintenance in late pregnancy; therefore, the formulation of rations for dry cows must contain sufficient energy to support fetal growth plus maintenance. Protein requirements during pregnancy increase, particularly during the last 2 mo. Colostrum is a source of immune components and nutrients to the neonate and contains more protein, immunoglobulins (Ig), nonprotein nitrogen, fat, ash, vitamins, and minerals than does milk. Because some vitamins do not cross the placental barrier, colostrum is the primary source of these nutrients for the calf after birth. Colostrum from cows that are not supplemented with vitamin E during the dry period may provide inadequate vitamin E to calves after birth. The Ig concentration in colostrum is not markedly affected by prepartum protein nutrition; diets containing high crude protein (CP) generally increase the nonprotein fraction of colostrum, but low CP diets do not affect the CP or Ig concentration of colostrum. However, data from beef calves suggest that absorption of IgG may be impaired when low protein diets are fed during the dry period. Diets for dry cows may be balanced to reduce the cation to anion ratio, which may reduce the incidence of parturient paresis. Recent research also suggests that these diets might increase the incidence of calves born in respiratory acidosis, which may impair the acquisition of passive immunity.

Growth and accretion of energy and protein in the gravid uterus during late pregnancy in Holstein cows

Multiparous Holstein cows (n = 18) were bred artificially to the same bull and then slaughtered at times ranging from 190 to 270 d postconception to assess accretion of energy, protein, fat, and ash by the conceptus. Wet weights, dry weights, and concentrations of energy, CP, crude fat, and ash were obtained for the following: fetus, combined amniotic and allantoic fluids, fetal membranes, cotyledons, caruncles, and uterine tissues. Rates of accumulation of these components in the gravid uterus (sum of all uterine contents) and fetus were described by linear or quadratic equations. Estimated rates of accretion of energy in the gravid uterus (i.e., conceptus) increased from 567 kcal/d at 190 d of gestation to 821 kcal/d at 270 d of gestation; corresponding rates of accretion of CP were 62 and 117 g/d. These daily rates represent net energy and protein requirements for conceptus growth during late pregnancy in mature Holstein cows. Conversion of predicted net energy to metabolizable energy requirements for conceptus growth, using the accepted efficiency factor of .14, yielded estimates that were consistent with current NRC recommendations. Factorial estimation of absorbed protein requirements is hampered by lack of precise information on the efficiency with which absorbed AA are deposited in conceptus tissues.
