Abstract
Objective Observation, radiotherapy and surgery are treatment options in vestibular schwannomas (VS). Decision making differs between centers and is usually based on tumor characteristics (e.g., size) and the expected physical health (PH) outcome (i.e., hearing and facial function). However, mental health (MH) is often under-reported. The objective of the present study was to ascertain the impact of VS treatment on PH and MH. Methods PH and MH were assessed in a prospective cross-sectional study including 226 patients with unilateral sporadic VS before and after surgical removal (SURG). Quality-of-life (QoL) was estimated by self-rating questionnaires: general Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), Penn Acoustic Neuroma Quality-of-Life Scale (PANQOL), Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI), Hearing Handicap Inventory (HHI), Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), and Facial Disability Index (FDI). QoL changes over time as well as predictive factors were accessed by multivariate analyses of covariance (MANCOVA). Results In total, 173 preoperative and 80 postoperative questionnaires were analyzed. There was a significant PH deterioration related to facial function (FDI, PANQOL-face) after surgery. In line with facial rehabilitation, however, FDI improved within the first five years after surgery and did not differ compared to the preoperative patient cohort, eventually. In contrast, MH (i.e., PANQOL-anxiety) and general health (i.e., PANQOL-GH) improved with surgery and correlated with the extent-of-resection. Conclusion Physical and mental health is significantly influenced by VS surgery. While PH might decrease after surgery, MH potentially increases when patient is cured. Practitioners should take MH into account before advising an incompletely VS treatment (e.g., subtotal resection, observation or radiosurgery).

Abstract
Background There is no consensus on the management of incidental meningiomas. The literature on long-term growth dynamics is sparse and the natural history of these tumors remains to be illuminated. Methods We prospectively assessed long-term tumor growth dynamics and survival rates during active monitoring of 62 patients (45 female, mean age 63.9 years) harboring 68 tumors. Clinical and radiological data were obtained every 6 months for 2 years, annually until 5 years, then every second year. Results The natural progression of incidental meningiomas during 12 years of monitoring was growth (P < .001). However, mean growth decelerated at 1.5 years and became insignificant after 8 years. Self-limiting growth patterns were seen in 43 (63.2%) tumors, non-decelerating in 20 (29.4%) and 5 (7.4%) were inconclusive due to ≤ 2 measurements. Decelerating growth persisted once established. Within 5 years, 38 (97.4%) of 39 interventions were initiated. None developed symptoms prior to intervention. Large tumors (P < .001) involving venous sinuses (P = .039) grew most aggressively. Since inclusion 19 (30.6%) patients have died of unrelated causes and 2 (3%) from grade 2 meningiomas. Conclusion Active monitoring seems a safe and appropriate first-line management of incidental meningiomas. Intervention was avoided in > 40% with indolent tumors in this cohort. Treatment was not compromised by tumor growth. Clinical follow-up seems sufficient beyond 5 years if self-limiting growth is established. Steady or accelerating growth warrant monitoring until they reach a stable state or intervention is initiated.

Abstract
Meningiomas are intracranial extracerebral tumors derived from arachnoid cells of the neural crest. They represent ∼20% of primary intracranial tumors and are seen as more common in elderly patients and women. Recurrence of meningioma can be observed during the early years after surgical treatment, but their occurrence within 10 years is rare. Case presentation In this report, the authors discuss a case of a 75-year-old patient with a recurrence of a frontal meningioma after 10 years of successful surgical resection. Our patient was a female who presented amnesia and memory lapses associated with several weeks of progressive heaviness of the lower limbs accompanied by speech heaviness, intense headaches, asthenia, consciousness disorder, and tonic-clonic convulsive seizures for 10 days. The patient had previously been treated for a benign meningioma by surgical excision. Imaging was performed, and recurrent frontal meningioma was retained as a final diagnosis. The patient underwent a successful total resection of her frontal tumor. Clinical discussion Recurrent tumors after complete surgical removal of meningiomas are rare and may be associated with microscopic residues. The more radical the surgery, the lower the risk of observing a recurrence. Adjuvant radiotherapy can be proposed, but the evidence is still lacking. Careful follow-up of all patients with or without complete surgical resection is therefore recommended. Conclusion This case illustrates the importance of suspecting recurrence of meningioma in adult patients after successful surgical excision, even after 10 years of free disease. Clinicians should be aware of long-term meningioma recurrence in this population, and imaging is key for a positive diagnosis.

Abstract
Historically, largely due to the good prognosis for survival, there has been little attention paid to the possible impact of meningiomas and their treatment on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). However, in the last decade there has been increasing evidence that patients with intracranial meningiomas suffer from long-term decreases in their HRQoL. Compared with controls and normative data, meningioma patients have worse HRQoL scores both before and after intervention and continuing long term (even after >4 years of follow-up). Overall, surgery results in improvements in many aspects of HRQoL. The limited available studies investigating the impact of radiotherapy suggest that this type of treatment decreases HRQoL scores, especially in the long term. There is however only limited evidence on additional determinants of HRQoL. Patients with anatomically complex skull base meningiomas and severe comorbidities, including epilepsy, report the lowest HRQoL scores. Other tumor and sociodemographic characteristics have shown weak associations with HRQoL. Furthermore, about one-third of caregivers of meningioma patients report caregiver burden, warranting interventions to improve caregiver HRQoL. As antitumor interventions may not improve HRQoL scores to be comparable to those of the general population, more attention should be paid to the development of integrative rehabilitation and supportive care programs for meningioma patients.

Quality of life outcomes in incidental and operated meningiomas (QUALMS): a cross-sectional cohort study. J Neurooncol 2023; 161:317-327. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Few studies have evaluated meningioma patients' longer-term health-related quality of life (HRQoL) following diagnosis and treatment, particularly in those with incidental, actively monitored tumours. METHODS A single-center, cross-sectional study was completed. Adult patients with surgically managed or actively monitored meningioma with more than five years of follow-up were included. The patient-reported outcome measures RAND SF-36, EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-BN20 were used to evaluate HRQoL. HRQoL scores were compared to normative population data. Outcome determinants were evaluated using multivariate linear regression analysis. RESULTS 243 patient responses were analyzed, and the mean time from diagnosis was 9.8 years (range 5.0-40.3 years). Clinically relevant, statistically significant HRQoL impairments were identified across several SF-36 and QLQ-C30 domains. Increasing education level (β = 2.9, 95% CI 0.9 to 4.9), P = .004), employment (β = 7.7, 95% CI 2.2 to 13.1, P = .006) and absence of postoperative complications (β=-6.7, 95% CI -13.2 to (-)0.3, P = .041) were associated with a better QLQ-C30 summary score. Other tumour and treatment variables were not. CONCLUSION This study highlights the longer-term disease burden of patients with meningioma nearly one decade after diagnosis or surgery. Patients with actively monitored meningioma have similar HRQoL to operated meningioma patients. Healthcare professionals should be mindful of HRQoL impairments and direct patients to sources of support as needed.

Abstract
Aim: This study aimed to determine preoperative anxiety and pain levels in patients who underwent craniotomy and investigate the effects on the development of postoperative acute-chronic pain.
Materials and Methods: In this prospective, observational study, STAI-I (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory) and STAI-II were used to measure preoperative anxiety levels in a total of 104 patients who underwent craniotomy, and a visual analog score (VAS) was used to determine pain. Demographic data of the patients, ASA (American Society of Anesthesiologists) scores, comorbidities, preoperative and postoperative VAS scores, cause of preoperative anxiety, type, and duration of operation were recorded.
Results: The mean values of STAI tests showed that 31.3% of our patients had mild preoperative anxiety, 58.7% had moderate and 10% had severe preoperative anxiety. In the STAI tests we performed before the operation, the mean values were 44 ± 11.2 for STAI-I and 44.5 ± 9.4 for STAI-II. The causes of preoperative anxiety in patients were determined as surgical operation (35.6%), anesthesia applications (17.3%), insufficient information (11.5%), and the possibility of postoperative pain (3.8%). It was observed that 60.6% of our patients had pain in the preoperative period, 51.9% of patients had acute pain in postoperative the 0th minute, 69.2% in 30th minute, 54.8% in 1st hour, 44.2% in 2nd hour, 34.6% in 24th hour, 22.1% in 48th hour, and 51% of patients had chronic pain in postoperative 6th month. We found a significant relationship between STAI-I and VAS scores at the 48th hour and, between STAI-II and VAS scores at the 2nd, 24th hour, and 6th month (p<0.05).
Conclusion: It was observed that craniotomy patients mostly had moderate anxiety and moderate to severe pain before the operation, and moderate-severe acute and chronic pain developed after the operation. A significant correlation was found between preoperative anxiety and postoperative pain.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Rehabilitation therapy during hospitalization is effective in improving activities of daily living (ADL) and physical function in patients with brain tumors. However, there are few studies on the effect of rehabilitation therapy on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in patients with brain tumors. Additionally, the EuroQol-5Dimension-5Level (EQ-5D-5L) index score has not been reported as an outcome. This study aimed to investigate the HRQOL of patients with brain tumors who underwent rehabilitation therapy and investigated the factors affecting the EQ-5D-5L index score from various perspectives, including various brain tumor type and recurrence. In addition, we examined the relationship between the EQ-5D-5L index score, disease-specific HRQOL scale, and ADL.
Methods
Patients with brain tumors who underwent treatment and rehabilitation at Single tertiary care academic medical center were included in this cross-sectional study. We used the EQ-5D-5L, European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) quality of life questionnaire core 30, and EORTC quality of life questionnaire brain cancer module to evaluate HRQOL. ADL were assessed using the functional independence measure (FIM). The relationship between each HRQOL assessment score and the FIM was analyzed, and the influence of related factors was assessed by multiple regression analysis.
Results
This study included 76 patients. The EQ-5D-5L index score was 0.689 for all patients with brain tumors and 0.574 for those with glioblastomas, which was the lowest value. There was a moderate correlation between the EQ-5D-5L index score and FIM (r = 0.627, p < 0.001). In addition, the EQ-5D-5L index score was significantly correlated with most of the items of the disease-specific HRQOL scale. Multiple regression analysis revealed that glioblastoma histology (coefficient: − 0.373, p = 0.005) and recurrence (coefficient: − 0.273, p = 0.020) were independent factors affecting the EQ-5D-5L index score.
Conclusions
Patients with glioblastoma undergoing rehabilitation have reduced HRQOL, which was influenced by glioblastoma histology and recurrence.

Abstract
Background While diagnosis with a high-grade intracranial tumor is known to be associated with increased psychosocial burden, the burdens associated with meningioma are less well described. This study aimed to investigate the mental health burden in patients with meningiomas who have undergone surgical resection or serial observation, so as to identify and enhance awareness of gaps in care. Methods The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was administered to participants. Fisher’s Exact tests were performed to evaluate frequency distributions and t-tests were applied to compare postoperative and non-surgical patients’ HADS scores. Semi-structured interviews were completed on a subset of participants. Thematic analysis of interviews identified emerging themes. Results Thirty patients with intracranial meningiomas met inclusion criteria. The cohort’s mean age was 56.01 years and 66.67% were women (n = 20). Fourteen underwent surgery; sixteen were treated conservatively with observation. The average time since diagnosis of the sample was 37.6 months. Prevalence of mild to severe symptoms of anxiety was 28.6% amongst surgical management patients and 50% for active surveillance patients (p = 0.325). The prevalence of mild to severe symptoms of depression was 7.14% amongst surgical management patients and 6.25% for active surveillance patients (p = 0.533). Emerging themes from eight interviews reveal the influence of resilience, uncertainty and time, social support, interactions with medical experts, and difficulties during recovery on mental health. Conclusion The findings from the present study reveal that patients with meningiomas experience a significant mental health burden, illustrating the need for enhanced patient-centred care focusing on mental health. Abstract
Simple Summary Spinal meningioma is the most common primary intradural spinal tumor. Although histologically benign, the tumors often cause neurological deficits. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is defined as the aspects of quality of life which are most affected by ill health and is a measure of self-perceived health status. Despite many studies evaluating the neurological outcome after surgery for spinal meningiomas, no study has been concerned with the HRQoL and frequency of return to work. In this population-based cohort study, we reviewed 84 cases of surgically treated spinal meningiomas, with a mean follow-up of 8.7 years, to assess their HRQoL compared to a sample of the general population. We found that HRQoL after surgery was equal to the normal population, and the frequency of return to work was 100%, often within three months of surgery. Thus, surgical treatment of spinal meningiomas should not be considered a threat to long-term quality of life. Abstract Spinal meningiomas are the most common primary spinal intradural tumor. This study aimed to assess Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and the frequency of return to work in patients surgically treated for spinal meningiomas, in comparison to the general population. Variables were collected from patient charts, EQ-5D-3L, and study specific questionnaires. Patients who had been operated between 2005–2017 were identified in a previous study and those alive in 2020 (104 of 129) were asked to participate. Eighty-four patients (80.8%) with a mean follow-up of 8.7 years, responded and were included. Data was compared to the Stockholm Public Health Survey 2006, a cross-sectional survey of a representative sample of the general population. Analysis for potential non-response bias showed no significant differences. Women in the meningioma sample scored more problems than men with regards to mobility (p = 0.048). There were no significant differences concerning EQ-5Dindex (p = 0.325) or EQVAS (p = 0.116). The correlation between follow-up time and EQ-5Dindex was low (r = 0.167). When comparing HRQoL to the general population sample, no significant differences were found within the EQ-5D-3L dimensions, EQ-5Dindex or EQVAS. Those who postoperatively scored 3–5 on mMCs scored significantly more problems in the EQ-5D-3L dimension mobility (p = 0.023). Before surgery, 41 (48.8%) of the spinal meningioma patients were working and after surgery all returned to work, the majority within three months. Seventy-eight (96%) of the patients would accept surgery for the same diagnosis if asked today. We conclude that surgery for spinal meningiomas is associated with good long-term HRQoL and a high frequency of return to work.

Abstract
While well-established in other surgical subspecialties, the benefits of extended reality, consisting of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) technologies, remains underexplored in neurosurgery despite its increasing utilization. To address this gap, we conducted a systematic review of the effects of extended reality (XR) in neurosurgery with an emphasis on the perioperative period, to provide a guide for future clinical optimization. Seven primary electronic databases were screened following guidelines outlined by PRISMA and the Institute of Medicine. Reported data related to outcomes in the perioperative period and resident training were all examined, and a focused analysis of studies reporting controlled, clinical outcomes was completed. After removal of duplicates, 2548 studies were screened with 116 studies reporting measurable effects of XR in neurosurgery. The majority (82%) included cranial based applications related to tumor surgery with 34% showing improved resection rates and functional outcomes. A rise in high-quality studies was identified from 2017 to 2020 compared to all previous years (p = 0.004). Primary users of the technology were: 56% neurosurgeon (n = 65), 28% residents (n = 33) and 5% patients (n = 6). A final synthesis was conducted on 10 controlled studies reporting patient outcomes. XR technologies have demonstrated benefits in preoperative planning and multimodal neuronavigation especially for tumor surgery. However, few studies have reported patient outcomes in a controlled design demonstrating a need for higher quality data. XR platforms offer several advantages to improve patient outcomes and specifically, the patient experience for neurosurgery.

Abstract
PURPOSE The patients' burden with asymptomatic meningiomas and patients with good clinical outcome after meningioma resection often remains neglected. In this study, we aimed to investigate the longitudinal changes of psychological distress and quality of life in these patient groups. METHODS Patients with conservatively managed (CM) or operated (OM) meningiomas and excellent neurological status, who were screened for psychological distress during the follow-up visit (t1), were included. We performed a follow-up mail/telephone-based survey 3-6 months (t2) after t1. Distress was measured using Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Distress Thermometer (DT), 36-item Short Form (SF-36), and Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI). RESULTS Sixty-two patients participated in t1 and 47 in t2. The number of patients reporting increased or borderline values remained high 3 months after initial presentation, with n = 25 (53%) of patients reporting increased anxiety symptom severity and n = 29 (62%) reporting increased depressive symptom severity values. The proportion of distressed patients according to a DT score remained similar after 3 months. Forty-four percent of patients reported significant distress in OM and 33% in CM group. The most common problems among distressed patients were fatigue (t2 75%) and worries (t2 50%), followed by pain, sleep disturbances, sadness, and nervousness. Tumor progress was associated with increased depression scores (OR 6.3 (1.1-36.7)). CONCLUSION The level of psychological distress in asymptomatic meningiomas and postoperative meningiomas with excellent outcome is high. Further investigations are needed to identify and counsel the patients at risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to investigate the prevalence and associated factors of newly developed depression in patients who underwent craniotomy for brain tumor removal, as well as its effect on long-term mortality. METHODS Using a nationwide cohort database in South Korea, we included adult patients diagnosed with brain tumors who underwent craniotomy for brain tumor removal from January 1, 2011, to December 31, 2017. We excluded patients with a preoperative history of depression. RESULTS Among 4,275 patients, 727 (17.0%) patients were newly diagnosed with depression within one year, postoperatively. Two-year all-cause mortality and mortality due to brain cancer occurred in 1,233 (28.8%) and 1,099 (25.7%) patients, respectively. In the multivariable logistic regression model, older age, living in rural areas, newly acquired brain disability, underlying other psychiatric disorders, and longer length of hospital stay were associated with a higher incidence of newly developed depression. In the multivariable Cox regression model, newly acquired depression was associated with a 1.58-fold higher 2-year all-cause mortality compared with that in other patients (hazard ratio: 1.58, 95% confidence interval: 1.38-1.80; P < 0.001). LIMITATION Lack of information regarding severity and pathologic tumor type. CONCLUSION Within one follow-up year, 17.0% of patients were newly diagnosed with depression after craniotomy for brain tumor removal. Some factors (old age, living in rural areas, newly acquired brain disability, longer length of hospital stay, and underlying other psychiatric illnesses) could be risk factors for newly diagnosed depression. Furthermore, newly developed depression was associated with an increased 2-year all-cause mortality.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess preoperative psychological burden in patients with vestibular schwannoma (VS). METHODS A total of 100 patients undergoing VS resection between September 2019 and June 2020 completed preoperative psychological screening. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was applied the day before surgery, and a score >14 was considered clinically important. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyzes were used to identify risk factors associated with increased preoperative psychological stress. RESULTS Of the 100 patients who underwent VS resection, 44% were male, with a mean age of 45.9 years. Twenty-two (22%) had HADS scores >14. For the univariate analysis, risk factors associated with elevated psychological burden included time since diagnosis, number of symptoms, headache, vertigo, and nausea and/or vomiting. In the regression analysis, the number of symptoms and greater time from diagnosis to treatment correlated with higher preoperative psychological stress. CONCLUSION Nearly 1 in 4 patients with VS experienced clinically significant emotional burden preoperatively. Number of symptoms and greater time from diagnosis to treatment contributed to this psychological burden.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Meningiomas can have significant impact on health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Patient-centered, disease-specific instruments for assessing HRQOL in these patients are lacking. To this end, the authors sought to develop and validate a meningioma-specific HRQOL questionnaire through a standardized, patient-centered questionnaire development methodology. METHODS The development of the questionnaire involved three main phases: item generation, item reduction, and validation. Item generation consisted of semistructured interviews with patients (n = 30), informal caregivers (n = 12), and healthcare providers (n = 8) to create a preliminary list of items. Item reduction with 60 patients was guided by the clinical impact method, multiple correspondence analysis, and hierarchical cluster analysis. The validation phase involved 162 patients and collected evidence on extreme-groups validity; concurrent validity with the SF-36, FACT-Br, and EQ-5D; and test-retest reliability. The questionnaire takes on average 11 minutes to complete. RESULTS The meningioma-specific quality-of-life questionnaire (MQOL) consists of 70 items representing 9 domains. Cronbach's alpha for each domain ranged from 0.61 to 0.91. Concurrent validity testing demonstrated construct validity, while extreme-groups testing (p = 1.45E-11) confirmed the MQOL's ability to distinguish between different groups of patients. CONCLUSIONS The MQOL is a validated, reliable, and feasible questionnaire designed specifically for evaluating QOL in meningioma patients. This disease-specific questionnaire will be fundamentally helpful in better understanding and capturing HRQOL in the meningioma patient population and can be used in both clinical and research settings.

Abstract
Assessment of long-term functional outcomes after meningioma surgery is important. We systematically reviewed the literature on health-related quality of life (HrQoL) and functional disability (FD) of patients after surgery for intracranial meningiomas. Using PRISMA 2015 guidelines, we screened 289 abstracts and 43 titles were retained for full-paper screening. 15 articles did not present enough data to meet the inclusion criteria and 7 articles failed to assess functional assessment and HrQoL. Twenty-two articles were included in our review. HrQol was assessed in N = 18 publications, most frequently using SF-36 (N = 10), followed by EQ5D-5L (N = 4), EORTC-QLQ (N = 4), and the FACT questionnaire (N = 2). The assessment of FD was reported in N = 11 publications, mostly using the KPS (N = 8). The Barthel index was used in N = 2 publications. Follow-up was reported in N = 12 publications, ranging from 6 months to 9 years. Scientific publications assessing long-term postoperative HrQol and FD in patients undergoing meningioma surgery are scarce and the data are heterogeneously reported, using various scales and follow-up protocols. Efforts should be undertaken to uniformly assess long-term post-operative functional outcomes in meningioma patients.

Abstract
Preoperative anxiety is a common reaction exhibited by up to 80% of patients who are scheduled for surgical procedures and characterized by psychological and physical changes which may affect their perioperative period. Our aim is to report the most up-to-date evidence on preoperative anxiety in brain surgery patients through a systematic analysis of the studies produced in the last decades. We performed a systematic review of literature by searching PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases. Data were extracted using the Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome framework and critically analyzed. PRISMA guidelines were applied, and the risk of bias of the included studies was assessed using the Risk of bias (RoB) 2 and ROBINS tools, as was the methodological quality, following GRADE criteria. We included 27 articles, accounting for 2558 patients in twelve different countries. The prevalence of preoperative anxiety ranged from 17 up to 89%, higher in female patients. Preoperative anxiety was associated with lower quality of life and cognitive performance, higher need for information, poorer memory and attention, longer hospitalization, depressive symptoms, and increase of physical disability; no correlation with survival rate was found. Seven randomized controlled trials attested the efficacy of acupuncture, music therapy, virtual reality, and pharmacological support in lowering anxiety levels. Preoperative anxiety is a common phenomenon that could negatively affect the perioperative period of brain surgery patients: this is something that should not be neglected to achieve better care through early prevention and optimal management.

Abstract
Simple Summary Asymptomatic meningiomas are found in 1–2% of cranial MRIs. Most of them demonstrate no or minimal growth and are observed with follow-up imaging. However, the patients face a diagnosis of a brain tumor. So far, there is no established distress screening for such patients. In this study, we evaluated the psychological burden of patients with small asymptomatic meningiomas and compared it with patients after complete meningioma resection and excellent postoperative outcome. We found a high prevalence of anxiety and depression symptoms in both study groups. This demonstrates that even patients with benign asymptomatic intracranial tumors might be under significant distress and need psychooncological support. Abstract The diagnosis of intracranial meningiomas as incidental findings is increasing by growing availability of MRI diagnostics. However, the psychological distress of patients with incidental meningiomas under a wait-and-watch strategy is unknown. Therefore, we aimed to compare the psychosocial situation of meningioma patients under wait-and-watch to patients after complete resection to bridge this gap. The inclusion criteria for the prospective monocenter study were either an incidental meningioma under a wait-and-watch strategy or no neurologic deficits after complete resection. Sociodemographic, clinical, and health-related quality of life and clinical data were assessed. Psychosocial factors were measured by the Distress Thermometer (DT), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI), and the Short Form (SF-36). A total of 62 patients were included (n = 51 female, mean age 61 (SD 13) years). According to HADS, the prevalence of anxiety was 45% in the postoperative and 42% in the wait-and-watch group (p = 0.60), and depression was 61% and 87%, respectively (p = 0.005). In total, 43% of patients under wait-and-watch and 37% of patients in the postoperative group scored ≥6 on the DT scale. SF-36 scores were similar in all categories except general health (p = 0.005) and physical component aggregate score (43.7 (13.6) vs. 50.5 (9.5), (p = 0.03), both lower in the wait-and-watch group. Multivariate analysis revealed the wait-and-watch strategy was associated with a 4.26-fold higher risk of a pathological depression score based on HADS (p = 0.03). This study demonstrates a high prevalence of psychological distress in meningioma patients. Further evaluation is necessary to identify the patients in need of psychooncological support.

Abstract
We aimed to identify independent psychological predictors of quality of life (QOL) and functional outcome after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) for degenerative cervical spine disease. We prospectively included patients undergoing ACDF for degenerative cervical disc herniation and stenosis. Patients completed a structured psychological assessment including the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (ADS-K), Post-Traumatic Stress Scale-10 (PTSS-10), State Trait Anxiety Inventory-State Anxiety and - Trait Anxiety (STAI-S and STAI-T) and Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3 (ASI-3) before surgery, after 3 and 12 months. Outcome measures included EuroQol-5D (EQ), Short Form-36 (SF-36) and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) scores. Of 104 included patients who underwent ACDF between March 2013 and November 2017, 92 completed follow-up after 3 and 12 months. The mean Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) scores for neck pain (− 1.4; p < .001) and arm pain (− 1.8; p = .031) significantly decreased by 12 months. QOL scores significantly increased by 3 months (EQ: + 0.2; p < .001; SF-36 PCS: + 6.2; p < .001; SF-36 MCS: + 2.5; p = .044), a benefit which was retained at 12 months. Linear regression analyses identified statistically significant predictors in preoperative ASI-3, SF-36 MCS and STAI-S for postoperative QOL and ODI scores. There is a benefit for patients in terms of quality of life and function after undergoing surgery for degenerative cervical spine disease. With the ASI-3, SF-36 MCS and STAI-S there exist some predictors for postoperative QOL and ODI scores.

Abstract
Background Anxiety sensitivity (AS) is a trait-like predisposing factor for the prevalence of anxiety in patients diagnosed with breast cancer. The Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3 (ASI-3) has been widely used in both general and clinical samples for measuring AS. However, the data about its psychometric properties in women with breast cancer are deficient. In addition, there is no evidence proving the measure equivalence of ASI-3 across sociodemographic variables in the specific sample. Thus, the present study examined the psychometric properties and conducted measure equivalence testing of ASI-3 in Chinese women diagnosed with breast cancer. Methods This study included 815 Chinese women diagnosed with breast cancer. Single group confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was administrated to detect the factorial validity of ASI-3, and multigroup CFAs were conducted to test the measurement equivalence of ASI-3 across various sociodemographic variables. The reliability of ASI-3 was tested by Cronbach's alpha coefficient, Guttman split-half coefficient, McDonald's omega coefficient, and test-retest coefficient. The standardized factor loadings, construct reliability, and the average variance extracted of factors were used to measure the construct validity of ASI-3, and the partial correlations were conducted to examine the criterion-related validity of ASI-3. Results The ASI-3 had satisfactory reliability and validity in Chinese women diagnosed with breast cancer; three-factor model fitted the data well in CFA and reached partial strict invariances across age, education, and residence groups. Conclusion This study explored the psychometric properties and measurement invariance across sociodemographic variables of ASI-3 in Chinese women diagnosed with breast cancer. Our results not only proved that the ASI-3 is an appropriate instrument for measuring AS but also deepened the understanding of ASI-3 in Chinese women with malignancy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Quality of life (QoL) in primary brain tumour (PBT) is often the main outcome measure in an otherwise incurable disease. The impact of psychiatric, cognitive correlates on quality of life in primary brain tumours is less well studied. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES The primary objective was to find out the association of psychiatric morbidity, cognitive functions with quality of life in patients with primary brain tumours. The secondary objective was to study whether any association exists with tumour grading, laterality, location and psychiatric morbidity. MATERIALS AND METHODS 100 consecutive patients of PBT were screened in the Neuro-behavioural Clinic. Age, gender matched 52 healthy subjects were taken for comparison. Quality of life (qol) measure (EORTC), Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale (HADS), GHQ (12 item) and Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) were administered. RESULTS 52 PBT cases were included, out of which 17.30% had Organic Anxiety Disorder (F06.4), 23.07% had Organic Mood disorder (F06.3%).Statistically significant association was found in EORTC qol scores and anxiety scores (p 0.001), depressive scores (p 0.029), psychiatric morbidity (p0.000) .Significant association with tumour laterality, depression scores (p0.041) was found. PBT patients had poor quality of life as compared to matched healthy volunteers (p <0.001). Significant negative correlation between EORTC B-20, cognitive scores using Spearman's Rho (p0.005; r - 0.385), implying more symptoms with poor cognitive function scores. Psychiatric morbidity, cognitive dysfunction, poor qol were noted, though no association with tumour grading, location. CONCLUSION Regular assessments, early intervention will help in improving quality of life in PBT.
