Differences in grip force control between young and late middle-aged adults

Grip force control is a crucial function for human to guarantee the quality of life. To examine the effects of age on grip force control, 10 young adults and 11 late middle-aged adults participated in visually guided tracking tasks using different target force levels (25, 50, and 75% of the subject's maximal grip force). Multiple measures were used to evaluate the tracking performance during force rising phase and force maintenance phase. The measurements include the rise time, fuzzy entropy, mean force percentage, coefficient of variation, and target deviation ratio. The results show that the maximal grip force was significantly lower in the late middle-aged adults than in the young adults. The time of rising phase was systematically longer among late middle-aged adults. The fuzzy entropy is a useful indicator for quantitating the force variability of the grip force signal at higher force levels. These results suggest that the late middle-aged adults applied a compensatory strategy that allow allows for sufficient time to reach the required grip force and reduce the impact of the early and subtle degenerative changes in hand motor function.

Using kinematic reduction for studying grasping postures. An application to power and precision grasp of cylinders

The kinematic analysis of human grasping is challenging because of the high number of degrees of freedom involved. The use of principal component and factorial analyses is proposed in the present study to reduce the hand kinematics dimensionality in the analysis of posture for ergonomic purposes, allowing for a comprehensive study without losing accuracy while also enabling velocity and acceleration analyses to be performed. A laboratory study was designed to analyse the effect of weight and diameter in the grasping posture for cylinders. This study measured the hand posture from six subjects when transporting cylinders of different weights and diameters with precision and power grasps. The hand posture was measured using a Vicon(®) motion-tracking system, and the principal component analysis was applied to reduce the kinematics dimensionality. Different ANOVAs were performed on the reduced kinematic variables to check the effect of weight and diameter of the cylinders, as well as that of the subject. The results show that the original twenty-three degrees of freedom of the hand were reduced to five, which were identified as digit arching, closeness, palmar arching, finger adduction and thumb opposition. Both cylinder diameter and weight significantly affected the precision grasping posture: diameter affects closeness, palmar arching and opposition, while weight affects digit arching, palmar arching and closeness. The power-grasping posture was mainly affected by the cylinder diameter, through digit arching, closeness and opposition. The grasping posture was largely affected by the subject factor and this effect couldn't be attributed only to hand size. In conclusion, this kinematic reduction allowed identifying the effect of the diameter and weight of the cylinders in a comprehensive way, being diameter more important than weight.

Adaptive force control in grasping as a function of level of developmental disability

BACKGROUND

The adaptation to the task demands of grasping (grip mode and object mass) was investigated as a function of level of developmental disability.

METHODS

Subjects grasped objects of different grip widths and masses that were instrumented to record grip forces.

RESULTS

Proportionally, fewer participants from the profound compared with moderate and severe disability groups were able to complete the prehensile tasks. Nevertheless, all participants who completed the task showed adaptive grasping behaviour in terms of level and variability of force produced. There was higher absolute and relative force variability in low mass tasks that was enhanced with greater level of developmental disability.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings show task relevant adaptive grasping control with inhibition of force output at very-low-force conditions being the primary performance deficit of the profound disability group as a function of level of developmental disability.

Effect of object width on precision grip force and finger posture

This study aimed to define the effect of object width on spontaneous grasp. Participants held objects of various masses (0.75 to 2.25 kg) and widths (3.5 to 9.5 cm) between thumb and index finger. Grip force, maximal grip force and corresponding finger postures were recorded using an embedded force sensor and an optoelectronic system, respectively. Results showed that index finger joints varied to accommodate the object width, whereas thumb posture remained constant across conditions. For a given object mass, grip force increased as a function of object width, although this result is not dictated by the laws of mechanics. Because maximal grip force also increased with object width, we hypothesise that participants maintain a constant ratio between grip force and their maximal grip force at each given width. Altogether we conclude that when the task consists in manipulating objects/tools, the optimal width is different than when maximal force exertions are required.

Information and force level interact in regulating force output during two and three digit grip configurations

The experiment examined the force fluctuations during two and three digit grip configurations to investigate the relationship between task performance and inter-digit individuation as a function of force level and visual information intermittency rate over approximately 100-fold range (0.21-20 Hz). Subjects grasped an object with either the index finger (two digit grip) or the index and middle finger (three digit grip) opposing the thumb and produced isometric force to match a low and high total force level target. Force accuracy was lower at the large visual intermittency conditions and the higher force level. The force variability was lower in the three digit grip. Inter-digit individuation increased as a function of visual intermittency rate and was greater at the low force level. There was no improvement in performance or inter-digit individuation when visual feedback intermittency was greater than approximately 6 Hz (approximately 150 ms). Linear regression between the measures of task performance and inter-digit individuation yielded a significant negative relationship that was only present in the two digit grip when visual feedback rate was 1.67 Hz or lower and in the three digit grip when the feedback rate was 10 Hz or lower. The greater biomechanical degrees of freedom in the three digit grip configuration enable the subject to use, more effectively, visual information feedback at faster timescales in maximizing task performance by increasing digit independence. The shift from visual to nonvisual dominated motor control processes is dependent on the interaction of informational and biomechanical degrees of freedom.
