Abstract
BACKGROUND Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide, with intraocular pressure as the only known modifiable risk factor. Vitamin D has been proposed to influence intraocular pressure and decrease retinal ganglion cell degeneration. Based on these findings, vitamin D has been suggested to prevent or reduce the severity of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), which is the most common form. METHODS We applied two-sample Mendelian randomisation (MR) analyses to data from the SUNLIGHT consortium and the UK Biobank to assess the causal effect of vitamin D levels and vitamin D deficiency on primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). MR analysis, including sensitivity tests using other GWAS summary statistics from FinnGen, was also performed. We also investigated the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on genes involved in vitamin D metabolic pathways and POAG. RESULTS We found no statistical evidence that vitamin D levels (OR = 1.146, 95% CI 0.873 to 1.504, p = 0.326) or vitamin D deficiency (OR = 0.980 (95% CI 0.928 to 1.036, p = 0.471) causally affect the risk of developing POAG. Sensitivity analyses, including the use of a more relaxed p-value threshold, and use of winter-measured samples only, replication in the FinnGen dataset, and exploration of specific genetic markers also showed no evidence of association between SNPs for genes involved in key steps of vitamin D metabolism and POAG. CONCLUSIONS These results indicate that vitamin D may not be a significant factor in modifying POAG risk, challenging the hypothesis that vitamin D supplementation could be effective in reducing POAG risk. Further research should focus on identifying other potential risk factors for POAG prevention strategies.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare the histopathological findings of patients who had been diagnosed with dermatochalasis (DC) and had undergone upper eyelid blepharoplasty (ULB) as well as those of controls (C-Group) according to their serum vitamin D (SVD) levels. METHODS The prospective study included 136 upper eyelid skin from 68 patients who underwent surgery for DC and 53 upper eyelid skin from 53 patients who underwent levator surgery with ULB. The DC Group was then divided into 3 subgroups according to the marginal reflex distance (MRD4). The lymphatic vessel (LV) count and diameter of the largest LV (DLLV) were recorded, the stromal collagen bed (SCB) was observed, and its depth was measured, the interfibrillar edema was examined, and the elastic fiber and macrophage counts and recorded, respectively, and then all of these were evaluated. The SVD levels were compared between the DC patients and the C-Group. RESULTS In comparison to the C-Group, significant changes were seen in the dilated LV, DLLV, SCB depth, interfibrillar edema, elastic fiber density, and macrophage count in the DC sub-Groups (P < 0.001 for all). While no difference was found between DC sub-Group 1 (MRD4 > 4 mm) and the C-Group (P > 0.05), a significant difference was found between DC sub-Group 2 (MRD4 2-4 mm) and DC sub-Group 3 (MRD4 < 2 mm) for all of the parameters (P < 0.05). A statistically significant difference was also found in the SVD levels between the DC sub-Group 1 and DC sub-Groups 2-3 (P < 0.017, P < 0.001 respectively). CONCLUSION According to the results of this study, SVD level was significantly lower in DC group. Moreover, an increased LV count and diameter, decreased elastic fiber count, collagen fiber and stromal edema irregularity, and increased macrophage count were found to be associated with the SVD level.

Abstract
Purpose The perceived cause of disease is an important factor that has been linked with treatment outcomes but has not been fully assessed in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). This study assessed the accuracy of patients' perceived cause of POAG and identified associations between accuracy, illness perceptions, medication adherence, and quality of life (QoL). Methods The Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (BIPQ) was used to assess illness perceptions and asked patients to rank the three most important causes of their disease in order of importance. POAG risk factors recognized by the American Academy of Ophthalmology were used to code responses as accurate or inaccurate based on the following three methods: (1) coding any reported cause, regardless of rank, (2) coding only the first-ranked cause, and (3) coding and weighting all reported causes. Medication adherence was measured electronically. QoL was measured using the Glaucoma Quality of Life questionnaire. Mann-Whitney U test was used to detect differences in illness perceptions, medication adherence, and QoL between accuracy groups. Results A total of 97 patients identified a cause of their POAG and were included in this analysis. A higher proportion of patients reported an accurate cause (86.6% using method 1, 78.4% using method 2, and 79.4% using method 3; all p < 0.001). Mean medication adherence was 86.0% ± 17.8 and was similar across accuracy groups (all p > 0.05). Using method 2 (p = 0.045) and method 3 (p = 0.028), patients who reported an accurate cause of their POAG believed that their illness would last for a longer time compared to patients who reported an inaccurate cause. Method 3 also revealed that patients who reported an accurate cause of their POAG had lower perceived understanding of their illness (p = 0.048) compared to patients who reported an inaccurate cause. There were no differences in QoL between accuracy groups (all p > 0.05). Conclusion This study highlights the association between perceived cause of POAG and illness perceptions related to knowledge level and POAG duration. Future studies should assess associations between perceived cause of disease and other critical dimensions of illness perception.

Abstract
The synthesis and absorption of Vitamin D play crucial roles in numerous bodily functions, yet deficiencies persist due to factors like insufficient sunlight exposure and dietary inadequacy. Research underscores the significance of lifestyle elements such as diet, sun exposure, and physical activity in maintaining optimal Vitamin D levels. Strategies aimed at tackling deficiencies emphasize supplementation alongside lifestyle adjustments, especially in regions with abundant sunlight like the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Despite the abundance of sunshine in the Arab world, there remains a prevalent issue of Vitamin D deficiency. This problem arises from various factors, including cultural practices such as traditional clothing covering most skin areas, which limit sun exposure, and environmental factors like air pollution that reduce UV penetration. Dietary habits and lifestyle choices also contribute to this deficiency. Dealing with the ongoing pandemic requires a focused effort to enhance awareness. While some individuals may recognize common diseases caused by Vitamin D deficiency, such as rickets and osteomalacia, many remain unaware of the broader health risks associated with the condition, including non-skeletal manifestations. Additionally, there is a lack of understanding regarding the numerous hidden benefits of this hormone. Therefore, prioritizing educational initiatives that delve into these aspects is essential to effectively combat the current health crisis. This literature review aims to report both skeletal and extraskeletal consequences of hypovitaminosis and briefly discuss the cause of paradoxical vitamin D deficiency in sunny regions like the MENA. This was done by reviewing pertinent articles published between January 2000 and January 2024, sourced from databases such as PubMed, UpToDate, Scopus, and CINAHL, focusing exclusively on English language literature and using keywords such as "Vitamin D deficiency" and "Extraskeletal manifestations."

Abstract
BACKGROUND To present the effects of vitamin D insufficiency on the choroidal vascularity index, central choroid and central macula. METHODS 42 eyes of 42 patients with vitamin D insufficiency and 51 eyes of 51 age- and sex-matched healthy subjects were included in this retrospective, cross-sectional, and comparative study. The macular layer was examined using the retinal mapping mode of the spectral domain Optical coherence tomography (Optovue RTVue XR, Optovue Inc., Fremont, CA). Optical coherence tomography (OCT) images were taken in Enhanced Deep Imaging mode and transferred to Image J program. choroidal vascularity index (CVI) and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) measurements were evaluated. RESULTS The mean age of volunteers was 35.4 ± 7.2 years. There was a significant difference in CVI values 67.75±2.4 in the patients with vitamin D insufficiency and 69.22±1.75 in the control group. The SCFT of patients with vitamin D insufficiency and control group were 295.25±42.3 and 335.71±11.6 (p = 0.001, p<0.001 respectively). CONCLUSION OCT examination of patients with vitamin D insufficiency showed a decrease in CVI and SCFT values. These results are important in demonstrating the retinochoroidal effects of vitamin D insufficiency.

Abstract
Elevated intraocular pressure (EIOP) is the only major modifiable risk factor of glaucoma. While low serum vitamin D levels are considered a potential risk factor for glaucoma, there is conflicting evidence on the relationship between vitamin D and EIOP despite the possible linkage between vitamin D and intraocular pressure through oxidative stress and systemic inflammation. Therefore, the aim of this study is to verify the relationship between 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and EIOP using data from 15,338 individuals who visited the health promotion center of an education hospital. The cubic spline curve revealed an inverse dose-dependent association between serum 25(OH)D level and EIOP. Using multiple logistic regression analysis, the fully adjusted odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) for the EIOP of the serum 25(OH)D per increment was 0.97 (0.96-0.990). The fully adjusted ORs (95% CIs) for the EIOP of the 25(OH)D insufficiency and 25(OH)D sufficiency groups, compared to 25(OH)D deficiency group, were 0.72 (0.56-0.92) and 0.51 (0.34-0.78), respectively. The relationship remained significant in male and young age subgroups. In conclusion, the clinical assessment of intraocular pressure may prove helpful when treating patients with 25(OH)D deficiency, which may be a preventive strategy against the development of glaucoma.

Abstract
As the histology, physiology, and pathophysiology of eyes and kidneys show substantial overlap, it has been suggested that eye and kidney diseases, such as glaucoma and chronic kidney disease (CKD), may be closely interlinked. We review the relationship between CKD and various subtypes of glaucoma, including primary open-angle glaucoma, primary angle- closure glaucoma, normal tension glaucoma, pseudoexfoliation syndrome, and several glaucoma endophenotypes. We also discuss the underlying pathogenic mechanisms and common risk factors for CKD and glaucoma, including atherosclerosis, the renin-angiotensin system, genes and genetic polymorphisms, vitamin D deficiency, and erythropoietin. The prevalence of glaucoma appears elevated in CKD patients, and vice versa, and the literature points to many intriguing associations; however, the associations are not always confirmed, and sometimes apparently opposite observations are reported. Glaucoma and CKD are complex diseases, and their mutual influence is only partially understood.

Abstract
PRCIS In a retrospective cohort study, serum vitamin D levels were not associated with rates of structural or functional loss in glaucoma patients, suggesting that low vitamin D level is not a risk factor for progression. PURPOSE To investigate the association between serum vitamin D level and rates of functional and structural glaucomatous loss over time. METHODS This study included 826 eyes of 536 glaucoma or suspect patients with an average follow-up of 4.8±1.9 years. All patients had at least 1 serum vitamin D measurement, and all eyes had at least 2 reliable standard automated perimetry (SAP) tests and 2 spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD OCT) tests with a minimum follow-up of 6 months. Multivariable linear mixed-effects models were used to estimate the association of vitamin D level with rates of change in SAP mean deviation (MD) and OCT retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness over time while adjusting for potential confounding factors. RESULTS Patients had an average of 3.4±1.7 SAP tests, 4.8±1.9 SD OCT tests, and 2.3±1.9 vitamin D measurements. The average serum vitamin D level was 33.9±13.2 ng/mL. Mean rates of MD and RNFL change were -0.03±0.08 dB/y and -0.68±0.64 µm/y, respectively. After controlling for confounding factors, there was no statistically significant association between mean vitamin D level and rates of MD (β=0.038, 95% CI: -0.006, 0.082, P =0.09) or RNFL loss over time (β=-0.018, 95% CI: -0.092, 0.055, P =0.62). CONCLUSIONS We did not find a significant association between vitamin D level and rates of visual field or RNFL loss over time in individuals with glaucoma and glaucoma suspect patients.

Abstract
The contributory roles of vitamin D in ocular and visual health have long been discussed, with numerous studies pointing to the adverse effects of vitamin D deficiency. In this paper, we provide a systematic review of recent findings on the association between vitamin D and different ocular diseases, including myopia, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy (DR), dry eye syndrome (DES), thyroid eye disease (TED), uveitis, retinoblastoma (RB), cataract, and others, from epidemiological, clinical and basic studies, and briefly discuss vitamin D metabolism in the eye. We searched two research databases for articles examining the association between vitamin D deficiency and different ocular diseases. One hundred and sixty-two studies were found. There is evidence on the association between vitamin D and myopia, AMD, DR, and DES. Overall, 17 out of 27 studies reported an association between vitamin D and AMD, while 48 out of 54 studies reported that vitamin D was associated with DR, and 25 out of 27 studies reported an association between vitamin D and DES. However, the available evidence for the association with other ocular diseases, such as glaucoma, TED, and RB, remains limited.

Abstract
Glaucoma is one of the most common causes of irreversible vision loss worldwide. It is an insidious disease with a multifactorial pathogenesis. Despite progress in treatment methods, prevention and lifestyle modifications may be useful in slowing the progression of this disease. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the influence of diet, oxidative stress, and disturbances in blood serum levels of nutrients on the incidence and severity of glaucoma based on scientific reports on the role of nutrition in the pathogenesis and course of glaucoma. This paper presents an analysis of the above issues; however, further research is required to develop this topic. Future clinical trials are needed to assess the influence of nutrition and to develop nutritional management strategies for patients with glaucoma.

Abstract
There is currently a lack of high-quality research on the best dietary recommendations for patients with early glaucoma or at high risk for glaucoma. This meta-analysis aims to clarify the relationship between vitamin intake and glaucoma risk. Electronic databases, including PubMed, EMbase, ScienceDirect, Cochrane Database, Clinicaltrials.gov, and Google Scholar, were searched for publications indexed as of September 18, 2021. Data were expressed as odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The I2 index was used to assess heterogeneity. We performed five meta-analyses of existing studies to summarize the evidence on the association between vitamin intake and glaucoma risk. The initial search identified 689 studies, eight of which (262,189 patients) met the eligibility criteria for the meta-analysis. The data showed that high-dose intake of vitamins A (OR=0.63, 95%CI [0.53, 0.76]) and B (OR=0.71, 95%CI [0.64, 0.80]) but not vitamins C (OR=0.69, 95%CI [0.48, 1.01]), D (OR=0.90, 95%CI [0.45, 1.83]), or E (OR=0.91, 95%CI [0.71, 1.16]) was associated with a low prevalence of glaucoma. The results of this study demonstrated that high-dose intake of vitamins A and B, but not vitamins C, D, or E, was associated with a low prevalence of glaucoma.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and macular choroidal thickness (CT) of children who have Type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM), both with and without vitamin D deficiency (VDD). METHODS The prospective, case-control study herein comprised that included 46 children with DM and VDD (Group 1), 42 children with DM and normal vitamin D levels (Group 2), and 73 healthy children (Control group). The peripapillary RNFL thickness and macular CT were measured at three different points (subfoveal, 1500 μm nasal, and 1500 μm temporal from the fovea) and compared. RESULTS The subfoveal, 1500 μm nasal, and 1500 μm temporal CT values were determined to be lower in the patients in Group 1 and Group 2 when compared to those in the Control group (P < 0.001). The same parameters were determined to be lower in the patients in Group 1 when compared to those in Group 2, although this difference was not found to be statistically significant (P > 0.05). In all of the quadrants, the RNFL thickness was determined to be similar between the groups, with P > 0.05 for all of the groups, except for the nasal quadrant (P = 0.031). In the correlation analysis of the patients in Group 1, it was revealed that a positive correlation existed between the CT and the vitamin D levels (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION The choroids of pediatric diabetic children were thinner when compared to those of healthy children. The alterations in these parameters were more prominent in subjects who were determined to have lower levels of vitamin D.

Abstract
PURPOSE To quantitatively evaluate the retinal structural parameters of pediatric patients who were determined to be deficient in vitamin D. DESIGN Prospective, cross-sectional study. METHODS Retinal structural parameters, including the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), central macula, retinal layer, and choroidal thicknesses, central retinal artery equivalent (CRAE), and central retinal vein equivalent (CRVE), in pediatric subjects with vitamin D deficiency (group 1) and those without (group 2) were compared. RESULTS Group 1 comprised 70 individuals, while group 2 comprised 80 individuals. The mean peripapillary RNFL (except for the nasal superior sector [P = .037]), central macula, and retinal layer thicknesses were also determined to be similar in both groups (P > .05 for both groups). The mean choroidal thickness was lower in the subfoveal (P = .006) and nasal 3000-µm-diameter areas (P = .004) in group 1. The mean CRAE was determined to be lower (P = .031) and the CRVE was higher in group 1 (P = .005); it was determined that there was a significant correlation between the vitamin D level and both the CRAE (r = 0.447, P < .001) and CRVE (r = -0.320, P = .013). CONCLUSION Choroidal thinning, a decrease in the CRAE, and increase in the CRVE were structural changes that occurred in the pediatric subjects who had vitamin D deficiency. The alterations in these parameters became more prominent in pediatric subjects who were determined to have lower vitamin D levels.

Abstract
PURPOSE Glaucoma is a complex multifactorial disorder that is influenced by various systemic conditions. Several studies investigated the association between systemic factors such as Vitamin D deficiency for glaucoma development and reported contradicted findings. The aim of this study was to assess Vitamin D levels in glaucomatous Saudi subjects and its association with cup/disc ratio in primary open- and closed-angle glaucoma. METHODS This was a pilot study that included subjects aged 41-78 years from both genders recruited from a tertiary hospital, Riyadh city, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Subjects were divided into three groups: Group 1: subjects with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), Group 2: subjects with primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG), and Group 3: control subjects. All participants underwent detailed ophthalmic examinations including visual acuity, intraocular pressure measurement (IOP), gonioscopy, and fundus examinations. In addition, blood samples were collected from glaucoma patients and controls to measure the serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels. RESULTS A total of 75 subjects were included in this study. Measurement of IOP was within the range of 9-27 for all subjects. Mean serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels were 72.58 ± 31.79, 69.20 ± 24.24, and 67.14 ± 29.02 in Groups 1, 2, and 3, respectively. There were insignificant differences in Vitamin D levels among the three groups (P > 0.05). Moreover, no significant correlation was noted between Vitamin D levels and cup/disc ratio in Groups 1 and 2. CONCLUSION No association was found between Vitamin D deficiency and both POAG and PACG among Saudi population despite low serum level of Vitamin D in glaucomatous and control subjects. This study suggested that Vitamin D level may not contribute in augmenting the severity and progression of glaucoma.

Abstract
Previous epidemiological studies have demonstrated that the lower serum concentration of vitamin D was associated with elevated risk of open-angle glaucoma (OAG). However, few studies have examined the association between aqueous humor vitamin D concentrations and OAG. Hence, we investigated the relationship between 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations in aqueous humor and OAG. We measured 25(OH)D concentrations in aqueous humor and serum of 126 patients who underwent cataract surgery. 36 were patients with OAG and 90 were control patients. The 25(OH)D concentrations were measured using Elecsys Vitamin D Total Kits with the Cobas e602 module (Roche Diagnostics, Mannheim, Germany), an electrochemiluminescence assay. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to investigate factors associated with serum and aqueous humor 25(OH)D concentrations. Patients with OAG had significantly lower 25(OH)D concentrations in aqueous humor than control patients. Serum 25(OH)D concentrations were higher in patients with OAG than in the control, but this was not statistically significant. 25(OH)D concentrations in aqueous humor of patients with OAG were significantly associated with axial length but not with glaucoma severity, which was determined by the retinal nerve fiber layer thickness or mean deviation. Vitamin D concentrations in aqueous humor of patients with OAG were significantly lower than those in patients without OAG.

Abstract
CLINICAL RELEVANCE Vitamin D has regulatory effects on non-skeletal tissues including neurons. The contrast sensitivity function occurs as a result of interaction between retinal neurons. BACKGROUND The association between plasma vitamin D deficiency and contrast sensitivity function was investigated. METHODS Forty-one eyes of 41 subjects with vitamin D deficiency with plasma vitamin D level <20 ng/mL (Group 1), and 30 eyes of 30 subjects without vitamin D deficiency with plasma vitamin D level ≥20 ng/mL (Group 2), were included in this prospective study. OPTEC 6500 was used to measure the contrast sensitivity function at all spatial frequencies involving 1.5 cpd, 3 cpd, 6 cpd, 12cpd, and 18 cpd. The average and sectorial retinal nerve fibre layer thickness, the average and minimum ganglion cell-inner plexiform thickness and tear meniscus height were measured by using optical coherence tomography. RESULTS A significant difference was present between Group 1 and Group 2 regarding the plasma vitamin D level (12.4 ± 4.7 ng/mL in Group 1 versus 27.1 ± 6.7 ng/mL in Group 2 p < 0.001). All spatial frequencies of contrast sensitivity function were significantly greater in Group 2 than those in Group 1, as follows: 45 ± 22.6 in Group 1 versus 57.5 ± 20.9 in Group 2, p = 0.08 in 1.5cpd; 71.3 ± 31.3 in Group 1 versus 91.8 ± 27.8 in Group 2, p = 0.001 in 3cpd; 77.9 ± 39.9 in Group 1 versus 100.4 ± 38.4 in Group 2, p = 0.013 in 6cpd; 32 ± 17.5 in Group 1 versus 48.8 ± 25.2 in Group 2, p = 0.002 in 12cpd; and 12.1 ± 5 in Group 1 versus 17.5 ± 9.5 in Group 2, p = 0.001 in 18cpd. However, there were no significant difference between two groups in terms of retinal fibre layer thicknesses, ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer thicknesses, and tear meniscus height. CONCLUSION Vitamin D deficiency can lead to a decrease in contrast sensitivity function that is an indicator of visual quality. This may be an underlying reason for certain visual complaints.

We examined the association between dietary vitamin D intake, vitamin D supplements and serum 25 hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels and the risk of developing glaucoma. 143,389 postmenopausal women from the WHI including a subset with serum 25(OH) D measurements were examined to determine the association of dietary, supplemental and serum levels of vitamin D to the development of glaucoma. Dietary intakes of vitamin D, use of vitamin D supplements and serum levels of 25(OH) D were predictors examined for the main outcome of incident glaucoma. In multivariable models adjusted for demographic, clinical variables and medication use, dietary vitamin D, vitamin D supplements, total vitamin D intake (diet plus supplements) and serum 25 (OH) D measurements were not significantly associated with incident glaucoma. In the CaD placebo-controlled intervention clinical trial, there was also no association in the active intervention arm with glaucoma. We conclude that dietary vitamin D intake, supplements and serum levels are not significantly related to the risk of developing glaucoma in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
Primary open-angle glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy which can lead to irreversible blindness if untreated. A number of studies have been published suggesting a correlation between the level of serum vitamin D3 and glaucoma or intraocular pressure (IOP). The latter is known to be a major risk factor for glaucoma and is the main target of glaucoma treatment. We give a critical review of the literature, exploring what is known about this matter. While some studies report an inverse association between serum vitamin D3 and IOP, others do not confirm this finding. Similar divergent conclusions came from studies regarding the association between serum vitamin D3 and the presence or severity of glaucoma. The effect of vitamin D3 on IOP decrease has been attributed to both aqueous humor production and trabecular meshwork outflow pathway increase. Vitamin D3 has been shown to play a major role in reducing inflammation, modulating the immune response, and decreasing angiogenesis in the eye and in other organs. It has been suggested that, through its neuroprotective effect, vitamin D3 could be a protective factor for glaucoma and that vitamin D3 deficiency could explain glaucoma occurrence or severity in some patients. Other neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and multiple sclerosis have been similarly related to vitamin D3 deficiency. 1α,25(OH)2 vitamin D3 (calcitriol) supplementation has been shown to be beneficial for lowering IOP in monkeys. Although the studies highlighted in this review show interesting results, their limitations underscore the need for both population-based studies and larger randomized controlled trial with vitamin D3 supplementation. The specific role of vitamin D3 in the pathology of glaucoma remains to be elucidated, together with the possible therapeutic benefit of vitamin D3 supplementation.

Abstract
Currently, intraocular pressure is the only modifiable risk factor for glaucoma; thus, identifying other modifiable determinants may have far-reaching outcomes. There has been increasing interest in vitamin D status and glaucoma pathogenesis as low vitamin D has been identified by some studies as an independent risk factor for glaucoma. Although the exact mechanism of vitamin D in glaucoma remains uncertain, there is sufficient evidence to continue research in this area. There is a potential physiological role for vitamin D as an anti-inflammatory agent in the oxidative stress-driven pathogenesis of primary open-angle glaucoma, and further studies are required to evaluate the temporal and causal relationship. Ocular vitamin D status in the tear, aqueous and vitreous fluid is a prospective gap in research.

Associations Among Pregnancy, Parturition, and Open-angle Glaucoma: Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2010 to 2011. J Glaucoma 2020; 28:14-19. Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between factors associated with parturition and open-angle glaucoma (OAG) in Korean females. METHODS A population-based, cross-sectional survey was performed from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2010 to 2011 and enrolled postmenopausal female participants (n=1798). We obtained information on demographics, comorbidities, and health-related behaviors and performed comprehensive ophthalmic examinations. Multivariate regression analysis was used to assess the correlation between pregnancy and delivery and the prevalence of OAG in all enrolled subjects. RESULTS The prevalence of OAG among study participants was 6.42%. There was a significant difference in the number of deliveries and age at first delivery between the OAG group and the nonglaucoma group. In multiple linear regression models adjusted for age, hypertension, and intraocular pressure only pregnancy 1 was associated with higher risk of OAG compared with pregnancy 2 (P=0.023). Subjects who had 3 or 4 deliveries were at higher risk of OAG compared with subjects with 2 deliveries (P=0.027). An age at first delivery of 16 to 20 years or 21 to 23 years was associated with increased OAG risk compared with the reference group (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS A history of three or more deliveries and an age at first delivery younger than 23 years were associated with increased risk of OAG. These results suggest that changes or events during the period from pregnancy to delivery affect the development of glaucoma.

Abstract
Background The purpose of this study is to examine the dose-dependent effects of vitamin 1,25(OH)2D3 on apoptosis and oxidative stress. Methods In this study, 50 male Balb/c mice were used as control and experiment groups. The mice were divided into 5 groups each consisting of 10 mice. Calcitriol was intraperitoneally administered as low dose, medium dose, medium-high dose and high dose vitamin D groups (at 0.5, 1, 5 and 10 μg/kg, respectively), for three times a week during 14 days. At the end of the study, annexin V was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method, and total antioxidant capacity and total oxidant status values were measured by colorimetric method in serum. Hematoxylin eosin staining was performed in liver tissues and periodic acid schiff staining was performed in kidney tissues. Results While comparing the results of medium-high dose (5 μg/kg) and high dose (10 μg/kg) vitamin D administration to that of the control group, it was observed that serum antioxidant status and annexin V levels decreased and glomerular mesenchial matrix ratio increased in kidney (p<0.05). In addition to these findings, in the group receiving high dose vitamin D (10 μg/kg), it was observed that the damage to the liver increased together with the the oxidative stress index values (p<0.05). Conclusions As a result, this study was the first in the literature to report that use of high-dose vitamin D (10 μg/kg) results in oxidant effect, rather than being an antioxidant, and causes severe histopathological toxicity in the liver and kidney.

Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency is linked to pathogenesis of many diseases including cardiovascular, cancer, and various eye diseases. In recent years, important roles for vitamin D in regulation of immune function, inflammation, angiogenesis, and aging have been demonstrated. Thus, vitamin D and its analogs have been evaluated for the treatment of various types of cancer and chronic diseases. We have previously shown that the active form of vitamin D [1,25(OH)2D3] is a potent inhibitor of angiogenesis. This activity is consistent with the important role proposed for vitamin D and its analogs in the mitigation of tumor growth through inhibition of angiogenesis. Here, we review the important nutritional value of vitamin D and the abnormalities linked to its deficiency. We will explore its potential role as a regulator of angiogenesis and vascular cell function and the role vitamin D receptor (VDR) expression plays in these activities during vascular development and neovascularization. Our studies have established an important role for 1,25(OH)2D3 and VDR in the regulation of perivascular supporting cell function. In addition, the interaction of 1,25(OH)2D3 and VDR is essential for these activities and inhibition of neovascularization. Delineating the signaling pathways involved and identification of genes that are the target of 1,25(OH)2D3 regulation in vascular cells will allow us to identify novel pathways that are targets for regulation of vascular function and angiogenesis.

Abstract
Purpose. This study was performed to evaluate the relationship between intraocular pressure (IOP) and glaucomatous optic nerve change and thyroid factors in Korean population. Materials and Methods. The study included subjects who underwent health screening in Kangbuk Samsung Hospital. Detailed history taking and systemic and ocular examination including fundus photography were performed for all participants. All fundus photographs were divided into two groups based on disc and RNFL appearance: nonglaucoma and glaucoma group. Subjects were also divided into quartiles of each thyroid function parameter, and the relationship with IOP and glaucoma were analysed. Results. In univariate analysis, free T4, T3, and TSH in normal subjects and T3 in thyroid disease group were associated with the IOP. After adjusting for age and sex, the IOP tended to slightly decrease according to the level of the quartile of free T4 and T3 in normal subjects. In terms of glaucoma, on multivariate analysis, it did not show a significant correlation with any thyroid function tests. Conclusions. In normal subjects, the IOP tended to be decreased according to the level of free T4 and T3 but the amounts were clinically insignificant. Thyroid factors are not an independent risk factor for the development of glaucoma.
