Abstract
Eggshell quality is among the most important factors affecting hatchability in broiler breeders, and therefore several methods for its assessment are available in the poultry industry. Among them, eggshell translucency has received special attention in recent years due to its connection with ultrastructural disorganization of the shell layers. However, there is very limited data on the impact of translucency on hatching eggs and on the possible links between this trait and specific gravity (SG) or shell color. Thus, our study investigated associations and interactions between eggshell translucency, SG, and color on incubation parameters of eggs from the same breeding flock (Ross 308AP, 51 wk of age). To this end, light and dark eggs within 5 different SG categories (≥1.065, 1.070, 1.075, 1.080, and ≤1.085) were selected from 15,976 eggs, graded into 3 translucency scores, and later incubated to evaluate egg weight loss, hatchability and embryonic mortalities. In general, translucency scores were evenly distributed within SG categories (χ2 [8, N = 1,138] = 13.67, P = 0.090) and color (χ2 [2, N = 1,138] = 4.93, P = 0.084). No interactions between eggshell translucency and SG or between translucency and color were found for the analyzed variables. An interaction was observed between SG and eggshell color for the variable egg weight loss, where the light-shelled eggs, in most SG categories lost more weight throughout incubation than dark eggs. Eggshell translucency affected egg weight loss, hatchability, and embryonic mortality on 11 to 18 d of incubation, with highly translucent eggs showing the worst results. At the same time, eggs with SG lower than 1.070 displayed the greatest weight loss, lowest hatchability, and highest contamination. We found no influence of eggshell color on weight loss or hatchability, but light-shelled eggs exhibited higher late embryonic mortality. Together, these data suggest that despite its effects on certain hatching parameters, shell translucency bears no relationship to SG or color.

Abstract
Iron is routinely supplemented in broiler feeds intending to prevent dietary deficiencies. The present research was conducted with the objective of assessing Fe requirements of broilers when fed supplemental phytase. A total of 1,280 1-d-old male Cobb × Cobb 500 were distributed in a 2 × 5 factorial arrangement (phytase-supplemented feeds × 5 graded increases of supplemental Fe) in 80 battery cages, eight replications of eight chicks each. The trial was replicated once. Chicks were fed a Fe-deficient diet without phytase (Fe analyzed at 31.30 ± 3.79 mg/kg) from placement to 7 d and then randomly distributed into battery cages with corresponding dieting treatments with or without phytase and graded increases of supplemental Fe. Feeds were formulated with corn and soybean meal (SBM), laboratory-grade calcium carbonate, and phosphoric acid; therefore, the vast majority of dietary Fe originated from corn and SBM (analyzed diet had 53.3 ± 1.41 mg/kg Fe). Phytase was added in excess to the producer recommendation of 1,000 FYT (4,452 ± 487 FYT/kg analyzed) such that phytate degradation was expected to be maximized. Supplemental Fe was from laboratory-grade ferrous sulfate heptahydrate (FeSO47H2O) which was increasingly added to the feeds (analyzed Fe in the supplemented feeds were: 53.3 ± 1.41, 65.5 ± 0.59, 77.2 ± 1.97, 87.6 ± 1.72, 97.7 ± 1.33 mg/kg). There were no interactions between phytase and dietary Fe for any response throughout the study (P > 0.05). Supplementing phytase had no effects on Fe intake or Fe excretion, as well as on hematocrit (Ht), hemoglobin (Hb), ferritin, Fe contents in the liver or thigh muscle color (P > 0.05). However, phytase-supplemented feeds produced better live performance as well as higher ileal digestible energy and Fe digestibility (P < 0.05). No effects were found for dietary Fe in live performance at day 28 (P > 0.05). On the other hand, increasing dietary Fe led to linear increases in Fe retention and excretion, Fe contents in livers, as well as Ht and Hb at 14 d (P < 0.05). Quadratic responses (P < 0.05) were observed for Hb at 21 d, serum ferritin on days 14, 21, and 28 (maximum responses were 83.3, 104.0, 91.9, and 88.3 mg/kg Fe, respectively). In conclusion, supplementing Fe adding to a total of 97.7 mg/kg dietary Fe did not affect live performance traits. However, the average of Fe-related blood parameters was maximized at 91.9 mg/kg dietary Fe. Supplementing phytase provided a significant increase in Fe digestibility.

Abstract
Micro-elements are essential for the optimal feeding of broiler hens. Since the chelated micro-elements negatively affect the content of micro- and macro-minerals, there has been a tendency to apply them as an alternative to common mineral forms of micro-elements in poultry diets. This paper reviews the effects of chelates of micro-elements (iron, copper, zinc, manganese, and selenium) on broiler breeder hens' internal and external egg quality and their egg products. The use of chelated micro-elements compared to the mineral forms does not have a significant effect on the performance of broiler breeder flocks, but they have significantly positive effects on the internal and external egg quality of broiler breeder flocks. The chelated micro-elements were also better than mineral resources of micro-elements in improving fertility (0.59%), hatchability (0.81%), and reducing mortality of progeny (2.25%). Chelated micro-elements have no negative impact on blood biochemistry or the immune system of broiler breeder hens and decrease cholesterol (0.84 mmol/l) and triglycerides (0.04 mmol/l) in most cases in comparison with the other mineral forms. Therefore, chelated forms of micro-elements instead of the inorganic mineral forms in diets of broiler breeder hens provide better protection for birds and the environment and also improve egg quality.
