Role of Eruca sativa L. seeds in boosting the reproductive performance of male Japanese quails (Coturnix c. japonica)

Herein we attempt to shed light on the potential improving effect of Eruca sativa seeds (ESS) on the reproductive aspects of male Japanese quails. To accomplish this objective, two groups of quails were supplemented with ESS powder at doses of 5 and 10 g/kg feed from 7 days to 140 days of age, in addition to the control group, which did not receive treatment. Forty males were reared singly in cages to evaluate sperm characters and 32 males were raised with 64 females to evaluate fertility and sperm penetrability. Sixty-six phytochemical compounds were found according to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of ESS. The most plentiful ones are 13-docosenoic acid methyl ester, 9-octadecenoic acid methyl ester, and linoleic acid methyl ester. Both 5 g/kg and 10 g/kg doses of ESS showed similar effectiveness in enhancing various reproductive parameters, including gonadal index, sperm characteristics, fertility, libido, and cloacal gland attributes. However, some aspects like sperm concentration and testosterone levels exhibited a dose-dependent response. There is no significant change in mortality rate of supplemented groups compared to the control one. ESS also caused a reduction in feed intake and an enhancement in feed conversion ratio without affecting final body weight and body weight gain. This suggests potential nutritional benefits beyond reproductive health. The low-dose-fed group showed a significant reduction in total cholesterol and malondialdehyde compared to the high-dose-fed and unfed groups. The higher dose notably increased total antioxidant capacity compared to the lower dose and control group. Despite the positive effects on male reproductive parameters, there wasn't a significant impact on hatchability percentage, indicating that while male fertility improved, it might not have directly affected the viability of the eggs. Overall, the study suggests that ESS could be a safe and promising addition to the diet of male Japanese quails to enhance their reproductive capabilities without adverse effects. The findings could have implications for poultry farming by potentially improving breeding efficiency and health outcomes in quails.

Effect of light sources with and without UVA on selected behavior and health indicators in commercial broiler breeder flocks

As new light sources are being developed for poultry houses, systematic investigations on how these influence behavior and health in commercial broiler breeders are needed. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of 2 light sources (Evolys with UVA (LED) and Biolux 965 (CFL)) on the behavior and health of 2 broiler breeder hybrids during the production period. Eight commercial breeder flocks (Ross 308 n = 4, Hubbard JA757 n = 4) with Evolys (Ross n = 2, Hubbard n = 2) or Biolux (Ross n = 2, Hubbard n = 2) were visited at 25 and 50 wk of age to record behavior and health. Behaviors included resting, locomotion, exploration, comfort, feather pecking, aggression, and mating, while health was recorded by a transect walk, scoring the number of birds observed with: feather loss (FL) on head, back/wings, breast, and tail, wounds on head, back/wings, and tail, dirty plumage, lameness, sickness, and dead birds. The most common behaviors were resting, locomotion, comfort, and exploration, and these were influenced by a 3-way interaction between light source, hybrid, and age. Light source did not affect behavior in Hubbard birds at any age. In contrast, Ross birds housed in Evolys rested less at 50 wk compared to Biolux (P = 0.04) and showed more locomotion at 25 wk in Biolux compared to Evolys (P < 0.0001). Ross birds at 25 wk explored more in Biolux compared to Evolys (P = 0.0007). More comfort behavior was performed in Evolys in 25-wk-old Ross (P = 0.002), but not at 50 wk. These inconsistencies might be due to low sample size, which is a limitation in the study. The most common health indicators were FL on back/wings (mean 3.9%), wounds on back/wings (mean 0.22%), and FL head (mean 0.18%), with no effect of light source, hybrid, or age on FL back/wings, breast, or tail, but with increased FL on the head with increased age (P = 0.0008). In conclusion, the behavior of Ross birds seemed to be affected by light source, while the Hubbard birds were not. Light source had minor effects on the selected health indicators in the 2 hybrids.

Impact of different ratios of single and double interspiking on reproductive performance, some body welfare, and blood parameters of broiler breeders

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of different levels of single and double interspiking on reproductive performance, some body welfare, and blood parameters of broiler breeder flock. The study was carried out on a total of 3840 female and 384 male (with average weight 4706.07 ± 307.9 g) Ross 308 broiler breeders having age between 28 to 59 weeks in a broiler breeder house (40°13'16.3″N, 28°48'19.8″E) of a private commercial poultry company. A single interspiking was applied at the age of 45 weeks, and a double interspiking was applied at the age of 53 weeks with the ratio 75, 50, and 25% of the males in the trial groups were changed. The age was affected fertility ratio, hatchability of total eggs, and hatchability of fertile eggs in the single and double interspiking groups (P < 0.0001). While the spiking ratio was affected hatchability of fertile eggs in the single interspiking group (P < 0.0001), it was affected the fertility ratio, hatchability of fertile eggs in the double interspiking group (P = 0.015 and P = 0.024). The spiking type was affected fertility ratio and hatchability of total eggs (P = 0.002 and P = 0.001). The age and spiking ratio interaction was affected fertility ratio, hatchability of total eggs, and hatchability of fertile eggs in the single (P < 0.0001, P < 0.0001, and P = 0.053; respectively), and double interspiking groups (P = 0.015, P = 0.009, and P = 0.008; respectively). The age and spiking ratio and age- and spiking-type interaction were not affected body feather score and vent score in single and double interspiking group (P > 0.05). The age, spiking ratio, and type were not affected blood heterophil, lymphocyte, and heterophil/lymphocyte (H/L) ratio in the single and double interspiking group (P > 0.05). In conclusion, spiking program can be applied to the flocks which have poor management conditions and/or have less fertility traits.

Influence of exogenous corticosterone on testicular function and mating behavior of Nigerian indigenous cocks

In bridging the knowledge gap on stress physiology of Nigerian indigenous chickens, this study investigated the effect of exogenous corticosterone (eCORT) as stress inducing agent on the testicular function and mating behavior of Nigerian indigenous cocks. Twenty-four (24) cocks and one hundred and forty four (144) hens (mating ratio of 1 cock: 6 hens) were grouped into four and assigned to each of the four eCORT treatments (0, 2, 4 and 6 mgeCORT/KgBW) daily for 14 days. Semen samples were collected on days 0, 7 and 14 and analyzed for semen volume (SV), progressive sperm motility (PSM), membrane integrity (MI) and sperm abnormality (SA). Mating behaviors were monitored on days 3, 5 and 8. Blood samples, for hormonal (Luteinizing Hormone (LH), Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) Testosterone (TEST) and stress analysis (heterophil/lymphocyte ratio, H/L) were collected from brachial vein on days 7 and 14. On day 15, cocks were euthanized and testes harvested for histomorphometry. Data were analyzed using multivariate analysis, one–way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests all in SPSS 23. Administration of 4 mgeCORT/KgBW declined (P<0.05) PSM while 4 mgeCORT/KgBW and 6 mgeCORT/KgBW cocks had reduced (P<0.05) SV and MI with increased SA. Compared to baseline values, progressive sperm motility of cocks administered 6 mgeCORT for 7 and 14 days decreased (P<0.05) by 57.5% and 52.4%, respectively. Exogenous CORT had no significant (P>0.05) influence on the mating behaviors, H/L ratio, FSH and TEST. However, 2 mgeCORT/KgBW enhanced LH levels. Administration of eCORT did not affect the testicular epithelial height and seminiferous tubular diameter. In conclusion, optimal stress induced by eCORT impaired semen quality but with less impact on reproductive hormones, H/L and mating behaviors of intensively raised Nigerian indigenous cocks.

Impact of male-female cohabitation period on behavioral aspects, fertility, hatchability, and hormonal estimates of Japanese quail

To evaluate the impact of male-female cohabitation period on the fertility, hatchability, injuries response, and some hormonal estimates in Japanese quails. A total of 288 mature Japanese quails were equally divided into 3 groups (3 groups × 8 replicates × 12 birds), with 1 Male: 2 Females sex ratio. In the first group (control), male and female quails were reared continuously together, while the males in the second and third groups were reared together with females once or twice/wk times (24 h/ time), respectively throughout the experiment. The obtained results showed that final body weight (FBW/g), fertility (%), and hatchability (%) in the second and third groups significantly (P ≤ 0.01) increased compared with the control group. Laying quails in the second and third groups significantly (P ≤ 0.01) produced more and heavier eggs, while the feed consumption and feed conversion ratio were significantly (P ≤ 0.01) decreased compared with the control group. The injuries response for both sex in the second and third groups significantly (P ≤ 0.01) decreased compared with the control group. The cloacal size (mm²) for quails in the third group significantly (P ≤ 0.01) increased than those of the first and second groups, while the testes (%) were not affected. The testosterone hormone concentration for male chickens in the second and third groups significantly (P < 0.01) decreased, while the female progesterone hormone concentration (ng/mL) significantly (P < 0.01) increased compared with the control group. The means of red blood cells (RBC/106), white blood cells (WBC/103), and hemoglobin (g/dL) for quails in the second and third groups significantly (P < 0.01) increased, while heterophil/lymphocyte (H/L ratio) significantly (P < 0.01) decreased compared with the control group. Thus, it could be concluded that the reduction male-female cohabitation period of quails is recommended for improving the fertility and hatchability percentages as well as and some hormonal estimates.

Gregarious nesting in relation to floor eggs in broiler breeders

Gregarious nesting has often been observed in laying hens, where hens prefer to visit a nest already occupied by other hens over empty nests. This may result in overcrowding of the nests which is considered a welfare issue and, moreover, can increase the economic issue of floor eggs. This study aimed to describe gregarious nesting and spatial behavior in broiler breeders and how this relates to genetic background, fearfulness and mating behavior. Five commercially available genetic lines of broiler breeders were housed in 21 pens of 550 females and 50 males (six pens for lines 1 and 2, five pens for line 3 and two pens for lines 4 and 5) during the ages 20-60 weeks. Every 10 weeks, the plumage condition and wounds were assessed of 50 random hens per pen. Avoidance distance and novel object tests were performed to assess fearfulness at four time points. Distribution of eggs over nests was observed for 6 weeks at the onset of egg production at 26 weeks of age, and use of space was recorded at four time points, while (floor) egg production was noted daily per pen. We found differences between genetic lines over time in plumage condition and prevalence of wounds. Fear of humans was highest at the earliest age tested and did not correlate with general fearfulness as assessed by the novel object test. The distribution of eggs over nests was related to genetic background and was more uneven at the earliest age compared to later ages, and a more uneven distribution was correlated with an increased percentage of floor eggs. Distribution of birds over the litter area differed between the genetic lines, and less use of the litter area was correlated with an increased fear of humans and presence of wounds, suggesting an association with aggressive mating behavior. This difference in distribution of the birds could also explain the correlation between increased presence of wounds and decreased percentage of floor eggs. It is concluded that broiler breeders do show gregarious nesting, which is affected by genetic background. Both increased gregarious nesting and wounds are related to increased floor egg percentage, which should be studied further in broiler breeder research. Genetic selection for even use of the available nests and of the litter and slatted area would therefore support both broiler breeder welfare and performance.

Influence of a raised slatted area in front of the nest on leg health, mating behaviour and floor eggs in broiler breeders

European farms for broiler breeders often have raised slatted areas in front of the nests, but in other regions of the world no raised slatted areas are provided. This study aimed to investigate the effects of a raised slatted area on leg health, mating behaviour and floor laying behaviour. Ten groups of 33 broiler breeder hens and three males were housed in two pen types: with or without a raised slatted area in front of the nests. Each pen had one plastic and one wooden nest. Between 25 and 31 weeks of age, ten marked hens per pen were weighed and assessed weekly on foot pad dermatitis, hock burn and wounds. At the end of week 31, animals were euthanized and bone strength of the tibia and humerus of these individuals was assessed. At 24, 27 and 30 weeks of age, mating behaviour was observed for an hour per pen, noting both numbers of successful and unsuccessful copulations. The number of eggs laid in the nests and on the floor was recorded daily between 20 and 31 weeks of age. Foot pad dermatitis scores were affected by age, but not by pen type. Generally, there were only minor issues with foot pad dermatitis (scores <11 on a 0-100 scale), probably due to the young age of the hens. Body weight was not affected by pen type, while the prevalence of hock burns was too low to analyse and no difference in bone strength was found for the tibia and the humerus. Overall, mating behaviour was less frequent in pens with raised slats than in pens without raised slats (29 ± 2 vs 35 ± 3 times/h) and more frequent at 27 weeks of age than at 24 and 30 weeks of age (38 ± 1 vs 31 ± 4 and 27 ± 2 times/h). The pens with raised slats had a lower percentage of floor eggs than pens without raised slats (11.2 ± 0.4 vs 19.3 ± 0.5%). The wooden nest was preferred over the plastic nest as on average 63% of the eggs were laid in the wooden nest. This study shows that providing raised slats decreases mating behaviour and percentage of floor eggs, although its effects on leg health remain inconclusive.

Behaviour and reproductive performance of Nigerian native chickens subjected to different mating ratios for a short term

To date, there is no reported standard mating ratio for Nigerian native chickens despite their large population in the country. This study investigated the effect of mating ratio on behaviour, semen quality and level of stress. Sixty-three (9 cocks and 54 hens) sexually matured birds were randomly assigned to three mating ratios (MR) of 1 cock to 3 hens (1C:3H), 1 cock to 6 hens (1C:6H) and 1 cock to 9 hens (1C:9H), and each MR was replicated three times. Each cock spent 2 weeks in a particular MR before it was moved to another. By the 6th week, all cocks had experienced the three mating ratios. Behaviour of the hens and sexual behaviour of the cocks were observed in the morning and evening, respectively, for 6 weeks. At the end of 2nd week in each MR, semen samples were collected and evaluated for motility, morphology, liveability and concentration, and blood samples were also taken from the cocks to determine the heterophil/lymphocyte (H:L) ratio, an indicator of stress. There was also no significant effect of mating ratio on the fertility of eggs and hatchability of the chicks. The number of hen-hen aggression instances, frequency of visits to the nest box and duration of nesting was not influenced by the mating ratio. However, the duration of nest seeking was higher at 1C:3H and lower at 1C:9H. A mating ratio of 1C:9H is therefore recommended for farmers interested in raising Nigerian native chickens.

Effects of different claw-shortening devices on claw condition, fear, stress, and feather coverage of layer breeders

Natural mating colony cage systems for parent-stock layer breeders have been widely adopted by many commercial farms in China. However, the environment is still relatively barren, so enrichment devices such as claw abrasives can be provided. Hens living in wire cages lack the opportunity to abrade their claws, resulting in uncontrolled claw growth. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of claw abrasive devices (CADs). Three different CADs were investigated: abrasive strips (T1), metal plates with holes (T2) and rubber mats with grooves (T3); cages without CADs acted as controls (T4). Claw length and sharpness, foot health, feather coverage, fear and physiological stress and mortality of the layer breeders were evaluated. Twelve replicates were used for each treatment, a total of 48 identical cages. Results showed that CADs had significant effects on claw length and sharpness of both hens and roosters. Birds in the T1 group had the shortest claw length and bluntest claw sharpness at 22, 32, 42, and 52 wk of age (P < 0.05). T1, T2, and T3 had higher scores for claw condition and significantly better overall plumage condition on the back and rump than T4 (P < 0.05). Hens in the T4 group were more susceptible to the tonic immobility, novel object, and avoidance distance tests. No significant differences were found between groups in concentration of triiodothyronine, thyroxine or 5-HT, except a significantly higher concentration of corticosterone in T4 compared to T1, T2, and T3 (P < 0.05). Overall mortality and mortality from cannibalism were both significantly higher in T4 than in T1, T2, and T3 (P < 0.05). In conclusion, hens with access to CADs during the laying period had shorter and blunter claws, less damaged plumage, a lower plasma corticosterone secretion and mortality rate and were less fearful.
