Nickel Hydroxide-Based Electrocatalysts for Promising Electrochemical Oxidation Reactions: Beyond Water Oxidation

Transition metal hydroxides have attracted significant research interest for their energy storage and conversion technique applications. In particular, nickel hydroxide (Ni(OH)2), with increasing significance, is extensively used in material science and engineering. The past decades have witnessed the flourishing of Ni(OH)2-based materials as efficient electrocatalysts for water oxidation, which is a critical catalytic reaction for sustainable technologies, such as water electrolysis, fuel cells, CO2 reduction, and metal-air batteries. Coupling the electrochemical oxidation of small molecules to replace water oxidation at the anode is confirmed as an effective and promising strategy for realizing the energy-saving production. The physicochemical properties of Ni(OH)2 related to conventional water oxidation are first presented in this review. Then, recent progress based on Ni(OH)2 materials for these promising electrochemical reactions is symmetrically categorized and reviewed. Significant emphasis is placed on establishing the structure-activity relationship and disclosing the reaction mechanism. Emerging material design strategies for novel electrocatalysts are also highlighted. Finally, the existing challenges and future research directions are presented.

A comparative study of α-Ni(OH)2 and Ni nanoparticle supported ZIF-8@reduced graphene oxide-derived nitrogen doped carbon for electrocatalytic ethanol oxidation

Ethanol electrooxidation is an important reaction for fuel cells, however, the major obstacle to ethanol electrocatalysis is the splitting of the carbon-carbon bond to CO2 at lower overpotentials. Herein, a ZIF-8@graphene oxide-derived highly porous nitrogen-doped carbonaceous platform containing zinc oxide was attained for supporting a non-precious Ni-based catalyst. The support was doped with the disordered α-phase Ni(OH)2 NPs and Ni NPs that are converted to Ni(OH)2 through potential cycling in alkaline media. The Ni-based catalysts exhibit high electroactivity owing to the formation of the NiOOH species which has more unpaired d electrons that can bond with the adsorbed species. From CV curves, the EOR onset potential of the α-Ni(OH)2/ZNC@rGO electrode is strongly shifted to negative potential (Eonset = 0.34 V) with a high current density of 8.3 mA cm-2 relative to Ni/ZNC@rGO. The high catalytic activity is related to the large interlayer spacing of α-Ni(OH)2 which facilitates the ion-solvent intercalation. Besides, the porous structure of the NC and the high conductivity of rGO facilitate the kinetic transport of the reactants and electrons. Finally, the catalyst displays a high stability of 92% after 900 cycles relative to the Ni/ZNC@rGO and commercial Pt/C catalysts. Hence, the fabricated α-Ni(OH)2/ZNC@rGO catalyst could be regarded as a potential catalyst for direct EOR in fuel cells.

Influence of PtCu/C Catalysts Composition on Electrochemical Characteristics of Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell and Properties of Proton Exchange Membrane

The present work aimed to investigate the influence of “weakly bound“ copper dissolution from the surface of bimetallic PtCux/C catalysts on the properties of proton exchange membrane and the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) in general. A number of PtCux/C materials have been obtained by the simultaneous reduction in copper and platinum precursors in the course of liquid-phase synthesis with a varying ratio of metals from PtCu2.0/C to PtCu0.3/C. All bimetallic PtCux/C electrocatalysts after the activation stage exhibit high activity in the oxygen electroreduction reaction. The PtCux/C catalysts in “as prepared” state were tested in MEA. The increase in Cu content in PtCux/C catalysts led to a decrease in current density of MEA while its resistance was almost independent of the Cu fraction in the catalyst. The membrane saturation degree by Cu2+-ions after MEA testing did not exceed 40%, even in the case of the PtCu2.0/C material. The main reason for the degradation of membrane electrode assembly with PtCux/C materials is the transport limitation caused by the contamination of Nafion in three catalytic layer by “weakly bound” copper ions.

Electrochemically active site-rich nanocomposites of two-dimensional materials as anode catalysts for direct oxidation fuel cells: new age beyond graphene

Direct oxidation fuel cell (DOFC) has been opted as a green alternative to fossil fuels and intermittent energy resources as it is economically viable, possesses good conversion efficiency, as well as exhibits high power density and superfast charging. The anode catalyst is a vital component of DOFC, which improves the oxidation of fuels; however, the development of an efficient anode catalyst is still a challenge. In this regard, 2D materials have attracted attention as DOFC anode catalysts due to their fascinating electrochemical properties such as excellent mechanical properties, large surface area, superior electron transfer, presence of active sites, and tunable electronic states. This timely review encapsulates in detail different types of fuel cells, their mechanisms, and contemporary challenges; focuses on the anode catalyst/support based on new generation 2D materials, namely, 2D transition metal carbide/nitride or carbonitride (MXene), graphitic carbon nitride, transition metal dichalcogenides, and transition metal oxides; as well as their properties and role in DOFC along with the mechanisms involved.

A comprehensive and critical review of the recent progress in electrocatalysts for the ethanol oxidation reaction

The human craving for energy is continually mounting and becoming progressively difficult to gratify. At present, the world's massive energy demands are chiefly encountered by nonrenewable and benign fossil fuels. However, the development of dynamic energy cradles for a gradually thriving world to lessen fossil fuel reserve depletion and environmental concerns is currently a persistent issue for society. The discovery of copious nonconventional resources to fill the gap between energy requirements and supply is the extreme obligation of the modern era. A new emergent, clean, and robust alternative to fossil fuels is the fuel cell. Among the different types of fuel cells, the direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFCs) is an outstanding option for light-duty vehicles and portable devices. A critical tactic for obtaining sustainable energy sources is the production of highly proficient, economical and green catalysts for energy storage and conversion devices. To date, a broad range of research is available for using Pt and modified Pt-based electrocatalysts to augment the C2H5OH oxidation process. Pt-based nanocubes, nanorods, nanoflowers, and the hybrids of Pt with metal oxides such as Fe2O3, TiO2, SnO2, MnO, Cu2O, and ZnO, and with conducting polymers are extensively utilized in both acidic and basic media. Moreover, Pd-based materials, transition metal-based materials, as well as transition metal-based materials are also points of interest for researchers nowadays. This review article delivers a broad vision of the current progress of the EOR process concerning noble metals and transition metals-based materials.
