Recent Progress in (Photo-)-Electrochemical Conversion of CO2 With Metal Porphyrinoid-Systems

Electroreduction of Carbon Dioxide to Acetate using Heterogenized Hydrophilic Manganese Porphyrins

The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO₂ ) to value-added chemicals is a promising strategy to mitigate climate change. Metalloporphyrins have been used as a promising class of stable and tunable catalysts for the electrochemical reduction reaction of CO₂ (CO₂ RR) but have been primarily restricted to single-carbon reduction products. Here, we utilize functionalized earth-abundant manganese tetraphenylporphyrin-based (Mn-TPP) molecular electrocatalysts that have been immobilized via electrografting onto a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to convert CO₂ with overall 94 % Faradaic efficiencies, with 62 % being converted to acetate. Tuning of Mn-TPP with electron-withdrawing sulfonate groups (Mn-TPPS) introduced mechanistic changes arising from the electrostatic interaction between the sulfonate groups and water molecules, resulting in better surface coverage, which facilitated higher conversion rates than the non-functionalized Mn-TPP. For Mn-TPP only carbon monoxide and formate were detected as CO₂ reduction products. Density-functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that the additional sulfonate groups could alter the C-C coupling pathway from *CO→*COH→*COH-CO to *CO→*CO-CO→*COH-CO, reducing the free energy barrier of C-C coupling in the case of Mn-TPPS. This opens a new approach to designing metalloporphyrin catalysts for two carbon products in CO₂ RR.

Reaction of Corroles with Sarcosine and Paraformaldehyde: A New Facet of Corrole Chemistry

Details on the unexpected formation of two new (dimethylamino)methyl corrole isomers from the reaction of 5,10,15-tris(pentafluorophenyl)corrolatogallium(III) with sarcosine and paraformaldehyde are presented. Semi-empirical calculations on possible mechanism pathways seem to indicate that the new compounds are probably formed through a Mannich-type reaction. The extension of the protocol to the free-base 5,10,15-tris(pentafluorophenyl)corrole afforded an unexpected new seven-membered ring corrole derivative, confirming the peculiar behavior of corroles towards known reactions when compared to the well-behaved porphyrin counterparts.

V-Porphyrins Encapsulated or Supported on Siliceous Materials: Synthesis, Characterization, and Photoelectrochemical Properties

Metalloporphyrin-containing mesoporous materials, named VTPP@SBA, were prepared via a simple anchoring of vanadyl porphyrin (5,10,15,20-Tetraphenyl-21H,23H-porphine vanadium(IV) oxide) through a SBA-15-type mesoporous material. For comparison, vanadyl porphyrin was also impregnated on SiO₂ (VTPP/SiO₂). The characterization results of catalysts by XRD, FTIR, DR-UV-vis, and EPR confirm the incorporation of vanadyl porphyrin within the mesoporous SBA-15. These catalysts have also been studied using electrochemical and photoelectrochemical methods. Impedance measurements confirmed that supporting the porphyrin in silica improved the electrical conductivity of samples. In fact, when using mesoporous silica, current densities associated with oxidation/reduction processes appreciably increased, implying an enhancement in charge transfer processes and, therefore, in electrochemical performance. All samples presented n-type semiconductivity and provided an interesting photoelectrocatalytic response upon illumination, especially silica-supported porphyrins. This is the first time that V-porphyrin-derived materials have been tested for photoelectrochemical applications, showing good potential for this use.

Oriented External Electric Fields Regurating the Reaction Mechanism of CH4 Oxidation Catalyzed by Fe(IV)-Oxo-Corrolazine: Insight from Density Functional Calculations

Methane is the simplest alkane and can be used as an alternative energy source for oil and coal, but the greenhouse effect caused by its leakage into the air is not negligible, and its conversion into liquid methanol not only facilitates transportation, but also contributes to carbon neutrality. In order to find an efficient method for converting methane to methanol, CH₄ oxidation catalyzed by Fe(IV)-Oxo-corrolazine (Fe(IV)-Oxo-Cz) and its reaction mechanism regulation by oriented external electric fields (OEEFs) are systematically studied by density functional calculations. The calculations show that Fe(IV)-Oxo-Cz can abstract one H atom from CH₄ to form the intermediate with OH group connecting on the corrolazine ring, with the energy barrier of 25.44 kcal mol⁻¹. And then the product methanol is formed through the following rebound reaction. Moreover, the energy barrier can be reduced to 20.72 kcal mol⁻¹ through a two-state reaction pathway. Furthermore, the effect of OEEFs on the reaction is investigated. We found that OEEFs can effectively regulate the reaction by adjusting the stability of the reactant and the transition state through the interaction of electric field-molecular dipole moment. When the electric field is negative, the energy barrier of the reaction decreases with the increase of electric intensity. Moreover, the OEEF aligned along the intrinsic Fe‒O reaction axis can effectively regulate the ability of forming the OH on the corrolazine ring by adjusting the charges of O and H atoms. When the electric field intensity is −0.010 a.u., the OH can be directly rebounded to the CH₃· before it is connecting on the corrolazine ring, thus forming the product directly from the transition state without passing through the intermediate with only an energy barrier of 17.34 kcal mol⁻¹, which greatly improves the selectivity of the reaction.

The High-Effective Catalytic Degradation of Benzo[a]pyrene by Mn-Corrolazine Regulated by Oriented External Electric Field: Insight From DFT Study

The degradation of BaP into hydroxybenzo[a]pyrene by Mn-corrolazine and its regulation by an oriented external electronic field (OEEF) were systematically studied using first-principle calculations. Extensive density function calculations showed that the degradation of BaP into hydroxybenzo[a]pyrene by Mn-corrolazine occurs via a three-step process in the absence of OEEF, in which a more toxic and stable epoxide intermediate is generated. However, upon application of OEEF along the intrinsic Mn-O reaction axis, the degradation of BaP into hydroxybenzo[a]pyrene is greatly simplified. The negative charge on the terminal O atom of Mn-OO corrolazine increases with an increase in the OEEF intensity. As the intensity of the OEEF increases over 0.004 a.u., the negatively charged terminal O atom has the ability to directly abstract the positively charged H atom of BaP and the degradation of BaP into hydroxybenzo[a]pyrene can be completed via a one-step process, avoiding the production of more toxic epoxide intermediates.

Tuning the Electronic Properties of Homoleptic Silver(I) bis-BIAN Complexes towards Efficient Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction

We report herein the preparation and characterization of six readily assembled bis-coordinated homoleptic silver(I) N,N′-bis(arylimino)acenaphthene (BIAN) complexes of general structure [Ag(I)(BIAN)2]BF4 and the influence of the electronic properties of the ligand substitution pattern on their performance in electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2R). All the explored catalysts displayed substantial current enhancements in carbon-dioxide-saturated solvents dependent on the ligated BIAN and no significant concurrent H2 evolution when utilizing 2% H2O as a proton source. Additionally, preliminary studies, employing a drop-casted ink of 0.4 mg cm−2 [Ag(I)(4-OMe-BIAN)2]BF4 (Ag4) immobilized onto carbon paper gas diffusion electrodes in a flow cell with 1M KHCO3 aqueous electrolyte, resulted in a propitious Faradaic efficiency of 51% for CO at a current density of 50 mA cm−2.
