Pyrrole-Based Conjugated Microporous Polymers as Efficient Heterogeneous Catalysts for Knoevenagel Condensation

Application of chiral recyclable catalysts in asymmetric catalysis

Chiral drugs hold a significant position within the contemporary pharmaceutical market, and the chiral catalysts play a crucial role in their synthesis. However, current chiral catalysts encounter challenges pertaining to their separation from products and the recycling process. The utilization of chiral recyclable catalysts not only reduces production costs but also aligns with the growing emphasis on environmentally-friendly chiral synthetic chemistry. These recyclable catalysts exhibit diverse carriers and distinct characteristics. Chemists employ the distinctive attributes of individual carriers to render them recyclable, thereby yielding time and cost savings. This review examines the asymmetric recyclable catalytic reactions reported between January 2017 and October 2023, categorizing them based on carrier solubility, and elucidates the loading techniques, catalytic impacts, recovery approaches, and recycling processes associated with these carriers.

Porous organic polymers in solar cells

Owing to their unique porosity and large surface area, porous organic polymers (POPs) have shown their presence in numerous novel applications. The tunability and functionality of both the pores and backbone of the material enable its suitability in photovoltaic devices. The porosity induced host-guest configurations as well as periodic donor-acceptor structures benefit the charge separation and charge transfer in photophysical processes. The role of POPS in other critical device components, such as hole transporting layers and electrodes, has also been demonstrated. Herein, this review will primarily focus on the recent progress made in applying POPs for solar cell device performance enhancement, covering organic solar cells, perovskite solar cells, and dye-sensitized solar cells. Based on the efforts in recent years in unraveling POP's photophysical process and its relevance with device performances, an in-depth analysis will be provided to address the gradual shift of attention from an entirely POP-based active layer to other device functional components. Combining the insights from device physics, material synthesis, and microfabrication, we aim to unfold the fundamental limitations and challenges of POPs and shed light on future research directions.

Ultrastable Conjugated Microporous Polymers Containing Benzobisthiadiazole and Pyrene Building Blocks for Energy Storage Applications

In recent years, conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) have become important precursors for environmental and energy applications, compared with inorganic electrode materials, due to their ease of preparation, facile charge storage process, π-conjugated structures, relatively high thermal and chemical stability, abundance in nature, and high surface areas. Therefore, in this study, we designed and prepared new benzobisthiadiazole (BBT)-linked CMPs (BBT-CMPs) using a simple Sonogashira couplings reaction by reaction of 4,8-dibromobenzo(1,2-c;4,5-c')bis(1,2,5)thiadiazole (BBT-Br₂) with ethynyl derivatives of triphenylamine (TPA-T), pyrene (Py-T), and tetraphenylethene (TPE-T), respectively, to afford TPA-BBT-CMP, Py-BBT-CMP, and TPE-BBT-CMP. The chemical structure and properties of BBT-CMPs such as surface areas, pore size, surface morphologies, and thermal stability using different measurements were discussed in detail. Among the studied BBT-CMPs, we revealed that TPE-BBT-CMP displayed high degradation temperature, up to 340 °C, with high char yield and regular, aggregated sphere based on thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. Furthermore, the Py-BBT-CMP as organic electrode showed an outstanding specific capacitance of 228 F g^-1 and superior capacitance stability of 93.2% (over 2000 cycles). Based on theoretical results, an important role of BBT-CMPs, due to their electronic structure, was revealed to be enhancing the charge storage. Furthermore, all three CMP polymers featured a high conjugation system, leading to improved electron conduction and small bandgaps.

De Novo Design of a Pt Nanocatalyst on a Conjugated Microporous Polymer-Coated Honeycomb Carrier for Oxidation of Hydrogen Isotopes

A booming demand for energy highlights the importance of an emergency cleanup system in the nuclear industry or hydrogen-energy sector to reduce the risk of hydrogen explosion and decrease tritium emission. The properties of the catalyst determine the efficiency of hydrogen isotope enrichment and removal in the emergency cleanup system. However, the aggregation behavior of Pt, deactivation effect of water vapor, and isotope effect induce a continuous decrease in the catalytic activity of the Pt catalyst. Herein, a de novo design of a Pt nanocatalyst is proposed for catalytic oxidation of the hydrogen isotope via modification of a conjugated microporous polymer onto honeycomb cordierite as a Pt support. The conjugated microporous polymer creates a microporous and hydrophobic environment to attenuate the deactivation effect of water vapor and shape Pt nanoparticles with a diameter of around 2.4 nm. Thus, the as-prepared catalysts exhibit excellent catalytic performance in the range of 25-65 °C and high space velocity (≤30 000 h^-1) and a stable and high catalytic activity during 487 h of continuous and intermittent operation. Importantly, the charge of the Pt nanoparticles is redistributed by the conjugated skeletons, leading to a decreased energy barrier in the rate-limiting step of hydrogen isotope oxidation and a reduced isotope effect.

Emulsion templated scaffolds of poly(ε-caprolactone) - a review

The role of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and its 3D scaffolds in tissue engineering has already been established due to its ease of processing into long-term degradable implants and approval from the FDA. This review presents the role of high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) templating in the fabrication of PCL scaffolds, and the versatility of the technique along with challenges associated with it. Considering the huge potential of HIPE templating, which so far has mainly been focused on free radical polymerization of aqueous HIPEs, we provide a summary of how the technique has been expanded to non-aqueous HIPEs and other modes of polymerization such as ring-opening. The scope of coupling of HIPE templating with some of the advanced fabrication methods such as 3D printing or electrospinning is also explored.
