Abstract
The colonization and development of the gut microbiome in dairy calves play a crucial role in their overall health and future productivity. Despite the widely proposed benefits of inulin-related products on the host, there is insufficient information about how supplementing fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) affects the colonization and development of the gut microbiome in calves. In a randomized intervention trial involving newborn male Holstein dairy calves, we investigated the effect of FOS on the calf hindgut microbiome, short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), growth performance, and the incidence of diarrhea. The daily administration of FOS exhibited a time-dependent increase in the ADG and the concentration of SCFA. Concurrently, FOS delayed the natural decline of Bifidobacterium, promoting the maturation and stabilization of the hindgut microbiome. These findings not only contribute to a theoretical understanding of the judicious application of prebiotics but also hold significant practical implications for the design of early life dietary interventions in the rearing of dairy calves.

Abstract
Red clover (RC) extract is rich in isoflavones (formononetin and biochanin A) that have various biological functions. However, its low water solubility limits its bioavailability. In this study, an RC extract/β-cyclodextrin (RC/β-CD) dispersion was prepared by ball milling to enhance its water solubility and biological availability. The water solubility of formononetin and biochanin A was 34.45 and 13.65 μg/mL (increased to 3.11 and 2.14 times higher than that of RC alone), respectively. The alleviating effects of the dispersion on lipid accumulation and gut microbiota were evaluated in mice. The RC/β-CD dispersion showed a better effect on inhibiting lipid accumulation, especially on total triglycerides. The dispersion group had a higher relative abundance of Akkermansia, Muribaculaceae, and Bacteroides than RC alone, along with a higher level of acetic and butyric acid. The study provides a feasible way for improving the bioaccessibility and bioactivity of RC isoflavones in red clover.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As a novel inflammatory marker, Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index (SII) has not been studied with hepatic steatosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible relationship between SII and hepatic steatosis. METHODS In the cross-sectional investigation, adults having complete information on SII, hepatic steatosis, and bariatric surgery from the 2015-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were included. Hepatic steatosis was evaluated with heaptic steatosis index (HSI). The platelet count × neutrophil count/lymphocyte count was used to compute SII. We investigated the independent interaction between SII and hepatic steatosis using weighted multivariable regression analysis and subgroup analysis. To explore the potential relationship between SII, bariatric surgery and hepatic steatosis by controlling potential confounders by propensity score matching. RESULTS The study involved 10505 participants in total, 5937 (56.5%) of whom had hepatic steatosis according to the diagnosis. After adjusted for covariates, multivariable logistic regression revealed that high SII level was an independent risk factor for hepatic steatosis (OR = 1.30, 95% CI: 1.10-1.52, P 0.01). Unexpectedly, bariatric surgery reduced SII even after PSM corrected for differences of BMI and HSI. CONCLUSIONS In US adults, SII was positively correlated with an increase in hepatic steatosis. The SII may be a simple and affordable way to identify hepatic steatosis. Bariatric surgery may reduce SII without resorting to weight loss. This needs to be verified in additional prospective research.

Abstract
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is increasing in parallel with the rising prevalence of obesity, leading to major health and socioeconomic consequences. To date, the most effective therapeutic approach for NAFLD is weight loss. Accordingly, bariatric surgery (BS), which produces marked reductions in body weight, is associated with significant histopathological improvements in advanced stages of NAFLD, such as nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and liver fibrosis. BS is also associated with substantial taxonomical and functional alterations in gut microbiota, which are believed to play a significant role in metabolic improvement after BS. Interestingly, gut microbiota and related metabolites may be implicated in the pathogenesis of NAFLD through diverse mechanisms, including specific microbiome signatures, short chain fatty acid production or the modulation of one-carbon metabolism. Moreover, emerging evidence highlights the potential association between gut microbiota changes after BS and NASH resolution. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge on the relationship between NAFLD severity and gut microbiota, as well as the role of the gut microbiome and related metabolites in NAFLD improvement after BS.
