Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between soy isoflavones intake and cardiometabolic health remains inconclusive. We investigated the associations of urinary biomarkers of isoflavones including daidzein, glycitein, genistein, equol (a gut microbial metabolite of daidzein), and equol-predicting microbial species with cardiometabolic risk markers. METHODS AND RESULTS In a 1-year study of 305 Chinese community-dwelling adults aged ≥18 years, urinary isoflavones, fecal microbiota, blood pressure, blood glucose and lipids, and anthropometric data were measured twice, 1 year apart. Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity was also measured after 1 year. A linear mixed-effects model was used to analyze repeated measurements. Logistic regression was used to calculate the adjusted odds ratio (aOR) and 95% CI for the associations for arterial stiffness. Each 1 μg/g creatinine increase in urinary equol concentrations was associated with 1.47%, 0.96%, and 3.32% decrease in triglycerides, plasma atherogenic index, and metabolic syndrome score, respectively (all P<0.05), and 0.61% increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (P=0.025). Urinary equol was also associated with lower risk of arterial stiffness (aOR, 0.28 [95% CI, 0.09-0.90]; Ptrend=0.036). We identified 21 bacterial genera whose relative abundance was positively associated with urinary equol (false discovery rate-corrected P<0.05) and constructed a microbial species score to reflect the overall equol-predicting capacity. This score (per 1-point increase) was inversely associated with triglycerides (percentage difference=-1.48%), plasma atherogenic index (percentage difference=-0.85%), and the risk of arterial stiffness (aOR, 0.27 [95% CI, 0.08-0.88]; all P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that urinary equol and equol-predicting microbial species may improve cardiometabolic risk parameters in Chinese adults.

Abstract
The concept of inflammation encompasses beneficial and detrimental aspects, which are referred to as infectious and sterile inflammations, respectively. Infectious inflammation plays a crucial role in host defense, whereas sterile inflammation encompasses allergic, autoimmune, and lifestyle-related diseases, leading to detrimental effects. Dendritic cells and macrophages, both of which are representative mononuclear phagocytes (MNPs), are essential for initiating immune responses, suggesting that the regulation of MNPs limits excessive inflammation. In this context, dietary components with immunomodulatory properties have been identified. Among them, soybean-derived compounds, including isoflavones, saponins, flavonoids, and bioactive peptides, act directly on MNPs to fine-tune immune responses. Notably, some soybean-derived compounds have demonstrated the ability to alleviate the symptom of allergy and autoimmunity in mouse models. In this review, we introduce and summarize the roles of soybean-derived compounds on MNP-mediated inflammatory responses. Understanding the mechanism by which soybean-derived molecules regulate MNPs could provide valuable insights for designing safe immunomodulators.

Abstract
Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) colonize plant roots, establish a mutualistic relationship with the plants and help them grow better. This study reports novel findings on the plant growth-promoting effects of the PGPR Bacillus aryabhattai. Soil was collected from a soybean field, PGPR were isolated, identified, and characterized for their ability to promote plant growth and development. The bacterium was isolated from the soybean rhizosphere and identified as B. aryabhattai strain SRB02 via 16s rRNA sequencing. As shown by SEM, the bacterium successfully colonized rice and soybean roots within 2 days and significantly promoted the growth of the GA-deficient rice cultivar Waito-C within 10 days, as well as the growth of soybean plants with at least six times longer shoots, roots, higher chlorophyll content, fresh, and dry weight after 10 days of inoculation. ICP analysis showed up to a 100% increase in the quantity of 18 different amino acids in the SRB02-treated soybean plants. Furthermore, the 2-DE gel assay indicated the presence of several differentially expressed proteins in soybean leaves after 24 hrs of SRB02 application. MALDI-TOF-MS identified β-conglycinin and glycinin along with several other proteins that were traced back to their respective genes. Analysis of bacterial culture filtrates via GCMS recorded significantly higher quantities of butanoic acid which was approximately 42% of all the metabolites found in the filtrates. The application of 100 ppm butanoic acid had significantly positive effects on plant growth via chlorophyll maintenance. These results establish the suitability of B. aryabhattai as a promising PGPR for field application in various crops.

Abstract
Tetracycline is a widely used antibiotic and may thus also be an environmental contaminant with an influence on plant growth. The aim of this study was to investigate the inhibition mechanisms of tetracycline in relation to soybean growth and ecological networks in the roots and rhizosphere. To this end, we conducted a pot experiment in which soybean seedlings were grown in soil treated with 0, 10, or 25 mg/kg tetracycline. The effects of tetracycline pollution on growth, productivity, oxidative stress, and nitrogenase activity were evaluated. We further identified the changes in microbial taxa composition and structure at the genus and species levels by sequencing the 16S rRNA gene region. The results showed that tetracycline activates the antioxidant defense system in soybeans, which reduces the abundance of Bradyrhizobiaceae, inhibits the nitrogen-fixing ability, and decreases the nitrogen content in the root system. Tetracycline was also found to suppress the formation of the rhizospheric environment and decrease the complexity and stability of bacterial networks. Beta diversity analysis showed that the community structure of the root was markedly changed by the addition of tetracycline, which predominantly affected stochastic processes. These findings demonstrate that the influence of tetracycline on soybean roots could be attributed to the decreased stability of the bacterial community structure, which limits the number of rhizobium nodules and inhibits the nitrogen-fixing capacity. This exploration of the inhibitory mechanisms of tetracycline in relation to soybean root development emphasises the potential risks of tetracycline pollution to plant growth in an agricultural setting. Furthermore, this study provides a theoretical foundation from which to improve our understanding of the physiological toxicity of antibiotics in farmland.

Abstract
Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a severe X-linked inherited neuromuscular disease, has a high prevalence of obesity. Obesity exacerbates muscle damage and results in adverse clinical outcomes. Preventing obesity helps DMD patients delay disease progression and improve quality of life. Astaxanthin (AX) is a kind of carotenoid which has antioxidant and anti-adipogenesis effects. In this study, male C57BL/10ScSnDmdmdx/J mice were fed with a normal diet, a high-fat diet (HFD), and an HFD containing AX for 16 weeks, respectively. The results showed that AX significantly increased gastrocnemius fiber cross-section area and grip strength, improved treadmill endurance test and mitochondrial morphology, and reduced muscle triglyceride and malonaldehyde levels compared to the HFD. Lipidomic analysis revealed that AX decreased high levels of triglyceride, diglyceride, ceramides, and wax ester induced by HFD. Gut microbiota analysis indicated that AX supplementation failed to alleviate abnormal microbiota diversity, but increased the relative abundances of Akkermansia, Bifidobacterium, Butyricicoccus, and Staphylococcus. In conclusion, AX was expected to alleviate disease progression associated with obesity in DMD patients by reducing lipotoxicity and increasing the abundance of beneficial bacteria.

Abstract
Menopause is a significant phase in a woman's life. Menopausal symptoms can affect overall well-being and quality of life. Conventionally, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is used to alleviate menopausal symptoms; however, depending on the conditions, HRT may lead to side effects, necessitating the exploration of alternative therapies with fewer side effects. In this study, we investigated the effects of a combination of soybean germ extract (S30) containing 30% (w/w) isoflavone and a probiotic, Lactobacillus gasseri (LGA1), on menopausal conditions in an ovariectomized (OVX) rat model. We evaluated the impact of S30+LGA on body weight, estrogen markers, uterine and bone health, vascular markers, and neurotransmitter levels. The results revealed that treatment with S30+LGA1 significantly improved body weight and uterine and bone health. Moreover, S30+LGA1 demonstrated promising effects on lipid profile, liver function, and vascular markers and positively impacted serotonin and norepinephrine levels, indicating potential mood-enhancing effects. In conclusion, S30+LGA1, possessing anti-menopausal effects in vitro and in vivo, can be recommended as a soy-based diet, which offers various health benefits, especially for menopausal women.

Abstract
Morels (Morchella spp.) are highly nutritious and consumed as both edible mushrooms and traditional Chinese medicine. This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation with morel mushrooms on the gut bacterial microbiota and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) profiles in healthy mice. Healthy mice were randomly assigned to five groups: a control group (0% morel) and four intervention groups supplemented with different levels of morel mushrooms (5% for M5, 10% for M10, 15% for M15, and 20% for M20) over a period of 4 weeks. Fecal samples were collected at the end of the experiment to characterize the microbiota and assess the SCFAs levels. The morel intervention significantly altered the bacterial community composition, increasing Bacteroides, Lachnospiraceae NK4A136 group and Parabacteroides, while decreasing Staphylococcus and the Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes ratio (F/B ratio). Moreover, increased morel intake was associated with weight loss. All SCFAs content was upregulated in the morel-intervention groups. Potential SCFAs-producing taxa identified by regression analysis were distributed in the families Muribaculaceae, Lachnospiraceae, and in the genera Jeotgalicoccus, Gemella, Odoribacter, Tyzzerella 3 and Ruminococcaceae UCG-014. The functional categories involved with SCFAs-production or weight loss may contain enzymes such as beta-glucosidase (K05349), beta-galactosidase (K01190), and hexosaminidase (K12373) after morel intervention. The exploration of the impact of morel mushrooms on gut microbiota and metabolites contributes to the development of prebiotics for improving health and reducing obesity.

Abstract
Plant specialized metabolites (PSMs) are considerably diverse compounds with multifaceted roles in the adaptation of plants to various abiotic and biotic stresses. PSMs are frequently secreted into the rhizosphere, a small region around the roots, where they facilitate interactions between plants and soil microorganisms. PSMs shape the host-specific rhizosphere microbial communities that potentially influence plant growth and tolerance to adverse conditions. Plant mutants defective in PSM biosynthesis contribute to reveal the roles of each PSM in plant-microbiota interactions in the rhizosphere. Recently, various approaches have been used to directly supply PSMs to soil by in vitro methods or through addition in pots with plants. This review focuses on the feasibility of the direct PSM application methods to reveal rhizospheric plant-microbiota interactions and discusses the possibility of applying the knowledge gained to future engineering of rhizospheric traits.

Abstract
Traditionally made doenjang (TMD) produced by the long-term fermentation of soybeans with salt may improve symptoms of estrogen deficiency. We aimed to evaluate the effects of four TMD types, containing low and high amounts of Bacillus species and biogenic amines (HBHA, HBLA, LBHA, and LBLA), on energy, glucose, and lipid metabolism, by altering the gut microbiota in estrogen-deficient ovariectomized (OVX) rats. Their mechanisms were also examined. The OVX rats were divided into the control, cooked soybean (CSB), HBHA, LBHA, HBLA, and LBLA groups. Sham-operated rats were the normal control group. Serum 17β-estradiol concentrations were similar among all OVX groups. Tail skin temperatures, which are indicative of hot flashes, were higher in the control than the HBHA and HBLA groups and were similar to the normal control group. Weight gain and visceral fat mass were lower in the TMD and CSB intake groups but not as low as in the normal control group. Lean body mass showed a trend opposite to that of visceral fat in the respective groups. The hepatic triglyceride content decreased with the TMD intake compared to the control and CSB groups. mRNA expressions of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPAR-γ) and carnitine palmitoyltransferase-1 in the TMD and CSB groups were as high as in the normal control group, and the PPAR-γ mRNA expression was more elevated in the HBLA group than in the normal control group. The morphology of the intestines improved in the TMD groups compared to the control, and the HBHA and HBLA groups showed an enhanced improvement compared to the CSB group. The HBHA, HBLA, and LBHA groups increased the α-diversity of the cecal microbiota compared to the control. Akkermenia and Lactobacillus were higher in the HBLA and LBLA groups compared to the control. The expression of the estrogen, forkhead box proteins of the class-O subgroup, and insulin-signaling pathways were lower in the control group, and HBHA and HBLA prevented their decrement. In conclusion, long-term treatment with TMD containing high amounts of Bacillus potentially improves estrogen deficiency symptoms more than unfermented soybeans.
