Endocrine disruption in crustaceans: New findings and perspectives

A significant advance has been made, especially during the last two decades, in the knowledge of the effects on crustacean species of pollutants proven to be endocrine disruptors in vertebrates. Such effects have been also interpreted in the light of recent studies on crustacean endocrinology. Year after year, the increased number of reports refer to the effects of endocrine disruptors on several processes hormonally controlled. This review is aimed at summarizing and discussing the effects of several kinds of endocrine disruptors on the hormonal control of reproduction (including gonadal growth, sexual differentiation, and offspring development), molting, and intermediate metabolism of crustaceans. A final discussion about the state of the art, as well as the perspective of this toxicological research line is given.

Glyphosate Interference in Follicular Organization in the Wall Lizard Podarcis siculus

Glyphosate (Gly) is a broad-spectrum herbicide widely used thanks to its high efficiency and low toxicity. However, evidence exists of its toxic effects on non-target organisms. Among these, the animals inhabiting agricultural fields are particularly threatened. Recent studies demonstrated that exposure to Gly markedly affected the morphophysiology of the liver and testis of the Italian field lizard Podarcis siculus. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of the herbicide on the female reproductive system of this lizard in order to have a full picture of Gly-induced reproductive impairment. The animals were exposed to 0.05 and 0.5 μg/kg of pure Gly by gavage for 3 weeks. The results demonstrated that Gly, at both doses tested, profoundly interfered with ovarian function. It induced germ cells' recruitment and altered follicular anatomy by anticipating apoptotic regression of the pyriform cells. It also induced thecal fibrosis and affected oocyte cytoplasm and zona pellucida organizations. At the functional levels, Gly stimulated the synthesis of estrogen receptors, suggesting a serious endocrine-disrupting effect. Overall, the follicular alterations, combined with those found at the level of the seminiferous tubules in males, suggest serious damage to the reproductive fitness of these non-target organisms, which over time could lead to a decline in survival.

Toxic effects of glyphosate on histopathology and intestinal microflora of juvenile Litopenaeus vannamei

Glyphosate is a widely used broad-spectrum herbicide, its pollution to the surrounding conditions can't be ignored. It has been reported that glyphosate has poisonous impacts on aquatic animals. In this study, juvenile Litopenaeus vannamei (L. vannamei) was exposed to glyphosate, and the lethal concentration 50 (LC₅₀) of glyphosate to juvenile L. vannamei for 48 h was 47.6 mg/L. The histological analysis for intestine and hepatopancreas and the intestinal microorganisms of L. vannamei were evaluated after 48 h of exposure to glyphosate with LC₅₀. The histological analysis results showed that the lumen of hepatic tubules was diffused and deformed, the hepatic tubules were ruptured and intestinal villi were fallen off seriously after exposure to glyphosate for 48 h Moreover, the intestinal microbial composition and structure of L. vannamei were changed, with the abundance of Alphaproteobacteria increased significantly. The abundance of Rhodobacteraceae, Vibrio and Legionella increased, but there was no significant difference. The abundance of Bacillus, Paraburkholderia, Enhydrobacter, Comamonas and Alkanindiges decreased significantly. However, the homeostasis of intestinal microorganisms was destroyed. Phenotypic prediction of the two groups of microorganisms revealed a significant increase in the abundance of Facultatively Anaerobic in the glyphosate challenged group. This study suggested that hepatopancreas and intestinal tissue of L. vannamei were seriously damaged after 48 h of exposure to glyphosate with LC₅₀, and intestinal microbial homeostasis was disrupted.

Ovarian development of Xiphopenaeus kroyeri (Crustacea: Penaeidae) from Espírito Santo, southeastern Brazil

This study aimed to describe and characterize the stages of gonadal development of females of Xiphopenaeus kroyeri caught by artisanal fishers in Espírito Santo state, southeastern region of Brazil. All females (n= 1,831) were subjected to macroscopic and microscopic morphological analysis (n= 333) of the ovaries. From the morphology, coloration and degree of turgidity of the fresh ovary, macroscopic analysis determined five stages of gonadal development. The macroscopic analysis showed difficulties in differentiating the immature and spawning stages due to the similarity between the colors of the ovaries, which confirms the need to perform the macroscopic and histological analysis simultaneously for fisheries management studies. Microscopic observations allowed us to analyze the following six stages of cell development: oogonia, previtellogenic oocytes, primary vitellogenic oocytes, secondary vitellogenic oocytes, mature oocytes and atretic oocytes. From this, five stages of gonadal development were defined, i.e., immature, early development, advanced development, mature and spawned. The presence of peripheral bodies was not observed in this species. These results help to clarify and better understand the reproductive and population aspects of the Atlantic Seabob, which are fundamental for the establishment of management and conservation measures of this resource.

Reproductive toxicity due to herbicide exposure in freshwater organisms

Excessively used pesticides in agricultural areas are spilled into aquatic environments, wherein they are suspended or sedimented. Owing to climate change, herbicides are the fastest growing sector of the pesticide industry and are detected in surface water, groundwater, and sediments near agricultural areas. In freshwater, organisms, including mussels, snails, frogs, and fish, are exposed to various types and concentrations of herbicides. Invertebrates are sensitive to herbicide exposure because their defense systems are incomplete. At the top of the food chain in freshwater ecosystems, fish show high bioaccumulation of herbicides. Herbicide exposure causes reproductive toxicity and population declines in freshwater organisms and further contamination of fish used for consumption poses a risk to human health. In addition, it is important to understand how environmental factors are physiologically processed and assess their impacts on reproductive parameters, such as gonadosomatic index and steroid hormone levels. Zebrafish is a good model for examining the effects of herbicides such as atrazine and glyphosate on embryonic development in freshwater fish. This review describes the occurrence and role of herbicides in freshwater environments and their potential implications for the reproduction and embryonic development of freshwater organisms.
