Fish Parasites and Heavy Metals Relationship in Wild and Cultivated Fish as Potential Health Risk Assessment in Egypt

Prevailing parasitic diseases affecting Oreochromis aureus in Lake Burullus

Lake Burullus is an important source of fish production in Egypt; it produces 20.5% of the Egyptian fisheries' production. There is intense controversy about the heavy metal pollution in Burullus water and its effects on fish health and safety for human consumption. Heavy metals represent a major concern for aquatic life and could negatively affect fish health. Agricultural and industrial water drainage represents a considerable part of the lake water supply. The present work was conducted to determine heavy metal concentrations in lake water and blue tilapia Oreochromis aureus musculature. Water samples were collected from six locations to determine cadmium, copper, lead, zinc and iron. Sixty O. aureus fish samples were also collected from the same sampling points to assess the prevalent parasites infesting fish and to determine the heavy metal (Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn and Fe) concentrations in fish musculature then study the relationship between heavy metals concentration and prevailing fish parasites. Results indicated that 53.34% of the examined fish were infested with encysted metacercaria. Centrocestus formosanus, Prohemistomum vivax, and Euclinostomum heterostomum were retrieved from gills, musculature, hepatopancreas and the posterior kidney. The parasitic intensity in fish tissues was between 1 and 9 cyst g-1. Centrocestus formosanus was identified using the polymerase chain reaction in the gill tissues of 16 fish. The gill parasitic copepod Lamproglena monodi was identified in one fish. Degenerative changes such as thickening, corrugation, and destruction of gill filament are the most dominant pathological changes in infested fish gills. Heavy metal concentrations in water samples were at normal levels, except for copper and iron in the southern part of the lake. All heavy metals in fish musculature were below the permissible limits. The parasitic infestation was more dominant in the northern part of the lake than in the southern region; this could be due to elevated copper concentration in the southern part of the lake that could negatively affect the survival of the first intermediate host and parasite cercaria. In conclusion, captured fish from Lake Burullus were safe for human consumption, and heavy metal pollution in lake water does not represent a severe risk.

Metal distribution in three organs and edibility assessment on Coptodon rendalli from the Umgeni River impacted by metallurgic industrial activities

Fish is among the most affordable and readily available protein sources for communities residing near water bodies. However, the recent pollution status of aquatic ecosystems has rendered fish consumption risky for human health. The study evaluated metal levels in the liver, gill, and muscle tissues of Redbreast tilapia (Coptodon rendalli) from Inanda and Nagle dams in the uMgeni River system. Metals, Al, Sb, Cd, Cr, Fe, Mn, Mo, Pb, and Zn were analysed using ICP-OES. Fish size showed no significant difference between the two dams (p > 0.05) whereas a descending trend liver > gill > muscle was observed for most metal levels at both dams. Moreover, there was a clear separation for metal levels in the liver, gill, and muscle between the two dams (p < 0.001) and a similar trend was observed for organs in each dam (p < 0.001). No relationship was observed between fish length and metal levels and no definite trend was observed for inter-metal relationships. Antimony, Cr, and Pb showed THQs greater than 1 at both dams which suggests health risks for consumers. Molybdenum has also shown a concerning THQs with some individuals exhibiting values ranging from 0.5 - 0.9. These findings suggest that consuming C. rendalli from the Inanda and Nagle dams could result in adverse health effects from Sb, Cr and Pb.

Toxic heavy metals in a landfill environment (Vientiane, Laos): Fish species and associated health risk assessment

Leachates from municipal landfills introduce toxic heavy metals into water, causing bioaccumulation. This study assesses metal levels and potential human health risks associated with consuming Anabas testudineus and Channa striata. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry detected Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Zn in both fish species. Leachate metal concentrations meet international discharge standards, Cd, Cr, and Pb in the fish exceed the international accepted values. Gastrointestinal tract+liver samples show significant variation between species, particularly in Cd and Pb. EDI, THQ/HI, and TR for the both species fall below TDIs, lower than the limit of 1, and within the acceptable range of the US-EPA permissible limit, respectively. Fish consumption appears safe regarding carcinogenic risk, but exceeding metal limits could impact heavy metals accumulation in the local food chain. Raising public awareness is crucial, and governmental agencies and environmental organizations should enhance waste treatment technologies and enact relevant health legislation.

Heavy Metals Assessment and Health Risk to Consumers of Two Commercial Fish Species from Polyculture Fishponds in El-Sharkia and Kafr El-Sheikh, Egypt: Physiological and Biochemical Study

Metal pollution is a major environmental concern worldwide, especially in Egypt. The aquaculture industry uses widespread artificial feeds to stimulate fish production, leading to metal accumulation in the aquatic environment. Heavy metal concentrations (HMCs) in sediments, water, and tissues were studied to study the effect of pollution levels on heamatological, and biochemical, immunological aspects of farmed fish as well as on human health. Results declared that the HMC levels in the water and sediment were significantly different between El-Sharkia and Kafr El-Sheikh fishponds (T-test, p < 0.05). This was supported by the metal pollution index in the water and sediment, indicating that El-Sharkia fishponds (ES fishponds) were more contaminated than Kafr El-Sheikh fishponds (KES fishponds). Also, HMCs in fish tissues were significantly increased in fish cultivated in ES fishponds than in KES fishponds. Haematological, immunological, and biochemical alterations of Bolti (Oreochromis niloticus) and Topara (Chelon ramada) fish were significantly different within the different fish species as well as the different fishponds. From the human health perspective, the THQ-HMC and HI-HMC associated with the consumption of muscle suggest a safe non-carcinogenic risk to human health. In contrast, cadmium poses a cancer risk to children who consume the muscular tissue of Bolti fish from ES fishponds, which should be regarded as a warning sign based on data indices and a human health perspective. In order to minimise HMC pollution in the aquaculture sector, it is advisable to take possible assessments and carry out continuous monitoring considering international WHO/FAO assessments.

Potential health risk assessment for heavy metals in Tilapia fish of different spatiotemporal monitoring patterns in Kafr El-Shaikh and El-Faiyum Governorates of Egypt

Heavy metal (HMs) levels were evaluated in aquacultured tilapia fish collected from two highly producing districts in Egypt (Kafr El-Sheikh and El-Faiyum Governorates) during two seasons (autumn 2021 and spring 2022). As well, health risk assessment of exposure to HMs in tilapia fish was studied. The results revealed that six HMs: As, Cu, Fe, Mn, Cr and Zn were predominant in fish samples of the first season (autumn 2021), while most of HMs were existed in samples of the second season. All samples of the two seasons were free of Hg. Notably, autumn season's fish samples showed higher concentrations of HMs than those of the spring season. As well, Kafr El-Sheikh farms were highly contaminated with HMs than those of El-Faiyum governorate. Risk assessment results indicated that the THQ values of As substantially exceeded 1 either for Kafr El-Shaikh samples (3.15 ± 0.5) or for El-Faiyum samples (2.39 ± 0.8) of autumn season. Meanwhile, THQ values for all HMs, in spring season 2021, were less than one whole. These results indicated a potential health risk arising from the exposure to HMs, As in particular, in fish samples of autumn season as compared to those of spring season. Therefore, there is a need for remedial applications, in such polluted aquacultures in autumn season, which are currently under investigation as an integral part of the research project that funded the current study.

Biomonitoring of heavy metals using Contracaecum quadripapillatum (Nematoda) in comparison to its fish host, Lates niloticus, from the Nile River, Egypt

Recently, fish parasites have been used as a biomonitoring tool to indicate the health status of ecosystems. Therefore, this research aimed to evaluate the potential capacity of Contracaecum quadripapillatum larvae as accumulation indicators for metal pollution and compare metal concentrations in host tissues of non-infected and infected fish: Lates niloticus from the Nile River. Accumulations of Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn in larval nematodes and tissues of the liver, kidney, and muscles of both infected and non-infected fish were determined. All metal concentrations exhibit a significantly higher increase in larval nematodes than the muscles of infected fish and vice versa except Cd in the kidney. On the other hand, only Cd, Mn, Pb, and Zn concentrations were significantly higher in the parasite than in the host liver. Therefore, bioaccumulation factors were most obvious and effective in the muscles of infected fish than in the liver and kidney. Contracaecum larvae accumulate Cd and Pb more than other metals. The infrapopulation size of C. quadripapillatum correlated with metal concentrations in different host tissues, especially the kidney, while the correlations between metal levels in the tissues of both parasite and fish organs exhibit different patterns in each organ. The current work revealed that C. quadripapillatum larvae represent environmental monitors for metal pollution in the freshwater ecosystem.
