Abstract
Harvested wampee fruit is susceptible to disease, resulting in postharvest losses. Acidic electrolyzed water (AEW), a safe and innovative sterilization technology, plays a role in enhancing disease resistance in harvested produce. In this study, the efficacy of AEW in delaying wampee disease development was assessed, along with its association with disease resistance metabolism. Wampee fruit was treated with AEW (pH 2.5) at different available chlorine concentrations (ACCs) (20, 40, 60, and 80 mg/L) and subsequently stored at 25 °C for 8 days. Results revealed that 40 mg/L ACC in AEW (pH 2.5) was most effective in improving the postharvest quality of wampee fruit. Compared with control wampee fruit, those treated with 40 mg/L ACC in AEW exhibited lower incidence of fruit disease, higher pericarp lignin content, and higher activities of pericarp disease resistance enzymes (DREs), such as cinnamate-4-hydroxylase, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, chitinase, β-1,3-glucanase, polyphenol oxidase, 4-coumarate CoA ligase, and cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase. These results suggested that AEW elevated DRE activities, promoted lignin accumulation, and ultimately enhanced disease resistance, suppressed disease development, and improved storage quality in harvested wampee fruit. Consequently, AEW emerged as a safe technology to mitigate the disease development and enhance the storage quality of harvested wampee fruit.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Crops are constantly attacked by various pathogens. These pathogenic microorganisms, such as fungi, oomycetes, bacteria, viruses, and nematodes, threaten global food security by causing detrimental crop diseases that generate tremendous quality and yield losses worldwide. Chemical pesticides have undoubtedly reduced crop damage; however, in addition to increasing the cost of agricultural production, the extensive use of chemical pesticides comes with environmental and social costs. Therefore, it is necessary to vigorously develop sustainable disease prevention and control strategies to promote the transition from traditional chemical control to modern green technologies. Plants possess sophisticated and efficient defense mechanisms against a wide range of pathogens naturally. Immune induction technology based on plant immunity inducers can prime plant defense mechanisms and greatly decrease the occurrence and severity of plant diseases. Reducing the use of agrochemicals is an effective way to minimize environmental pollution and promote agricultural safety. AIM OF REVIEW The purpose of this workis to offer valuable insights into the current understanding and future research perspectives of plant immunity inducers and their uses in plant disease control, ecological and environmental protection, and sustainable development of agriculture. KEY SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS OF REVIEW In this work, we have introduced the concepts of sustainable and environment-friendly concepts of green disease prevention and control technologies based on plant immunity inducers. This article comprehensively summarizes these recent advances, emphasizes the importance of sustainable disease prevention and control technologies for food security, and highlights the diverse functions of plant immunity inducers-mediated disease resistance. The challenges encountered in the potential applications of plant immunity inducers and future research orientation are also discussed.

Abstract
The influences of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on the storability and metabolism of disease-resistant substances in fresh longan were investigated. Compared to the control samples, H2O2-treated longan exhibited a higher index of fruit disease, pericarp browning, and pulp breakdown, a higher rate of fruit weight loss, but lower chromaticity values (L*, a* and b*) in pericarp appearance, and a lower commercially acceptable fruit rate. Additionally, H2O2-treated longan showed a lower lignin content, lower activities of enzymes including phenylalnine ammonia lyase (PAL), cinnamate 4-hydroxylase (C4H), 4-coumaryl coenzyme A ligase (4-CL), cinnamate dehydrogenase (CAD), peroxidase (POD), chitinase (CHI), and β-1,3-glucanase (GLU). These data collectively suggest that H2O2 negatively impacted the storability of fresh longan. This can be attributed to H2O2's role in reducing the levels of disease-resistant substances and suppressing the activities of disease-resistant enzymes, implying that H2O2 reduced the postharvest storability of longan by compromising its disease resistance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Drought stress is a prevalent abiotic stress that significantly hinders the growth and development of plants. According to studies, β-aminobutyric acid (BABA) can influence the ABA pathway through the AtIBI1 receptor gene to enhance cold resistance in Arabidopsis. However, the Aspartate tRNA-synthetase (AspRS) gene family, which acts as the receptor for BABA, has not yet been investigated in poplar. Particularly, it is uncertain how the AspRS gene family (PtrIBIs)r can resist drought stress after administering various concentrations of BABA to poplar. RESULTS In this study, we have identified 12 AspRS family genes and noted that poplar acquired four PtrIBI pairs through whole genome duplication (WGD). We conducted cis-action element analysis and found a significant number of stress-related action elements on different PtrIBI genes promoters. The expression of most PtrIBI genes was up-regulated under beetle and mechanical damage stresses, indicating their potential role in responding to leaf damage stress. Our results suggest that a 50 mM BABA treatment can alleviate the damage caused by drought stress in plants. Additionally, via transcriptome sequencing, we observed that the partial up-regulation of BABA receptor genes, PtrIBI2/4/6/8/11, in poplars after drought treatment. We hypothesize that poplar responds to drought stress through the BABA-PtrIBIs-PtrVOZ coordinated ABA signaling pathway. Our research provides molecular evidence for understanding how plants respond to drought stress through external application of BABA. CONCLUSIONS In summary, our study conducted genome-wide analysis of the AspRS family of P. trichocarpa and identified 12 PtrIBI genes. We utilized genomics and bioinformatics to determine various characteristics of PtrIBIs such as chromosomal localization, evolutionary tree, gene structure, gene doubling, promoter cis-elements, and expression profiles. Our study found that certain PtrIBI genes are regulated by drought, beetle, and mechanical damage implying their crucial role in enhancing poplar stress tolerance. Additionally, we observed that external application of low concentrations of BABA increased plant drought resistance under drought stress. Through the BABA-PtrIBIs-PtrVOZ signaling module, poplar plants were able to transduce ABA signaling and regulate their response to drought stress. These results suggest that the PtrIBI genes in poplar have the potential to improve drought tolerance in plants through the topical application of low concentrations of BABA.

Abstract
The purpose of this work was to elucidate the influence of TF (5 ± 5 °C, and 5 ± 1 °C) and CT (5 ± 0.1 °C served as an isothermal state) storage environment on the antioxidant ability and energy metabolism in post-harvest apple fruit during storage. Specifically, compared with fruit in TFs groups, the quality attributes of apples in the CT group, including firmness, fresh weight, contents of SSC, and TA were maintained at a higher level. In addition, fruit stored in the CT environment revealed a suppressed respiration rate and EL, lower MDA, O2·-, and H2O2 accumulation but increased the activities of SOD, CAT, APX, and GR. At the end of storage, the SOD, CAT, APX, and GR activities of fruit in the CT group were 38.14%,48.04%, 115.29%, and 34.85% higher than that of the TF5 group, respectively. Fruit in the CT environment also revealed higher AsA, GSH, total phenols, and total flavonoid content. In addition, fruit stored in the CT environment maintained higher ATP content, EC, and more active H+-ATPase, Ca2+-ATPase, CCO, and SDH. At the end of storage, the SDH and CCO activities of fruit in the TF0.1 group were 1.74, and 2.59 times higher than that in the TF5 group, respectively. Taken together, we attributed the fact that a constant temperature storage environment can retard the fruit senescence to the enhancement of antioxidant capacities and maintaining of higher energy status in apple fruit.

Abstract
Plant diseases are still the main problem for the reduction in crop yield and a threat to global food security. Additionally, excessive usage of chemical inputs such as pesticides and fungicides to control plant diseases have created another serious problem for human and environmental health. In view of this, the application of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) for controlling plant disease incidences has been identified as an eco-friendly approach for coping with the food security issue. In this review, we have identified different ways by which PGPRs are capable of reducing phytopathogenic infestations and enhancing crop yield. PGPR suppresses plant diseases, both directly and indirectly, mediated by microbial metabolites and signaling components. Microbial synthesized anti-pathogenic metabolites such as siderophores, antibiotics, lytic enzymes, hydrogen cyanide, and several others act directly on phytopathogens. The indirect mechanisms of reducing plant disease infestation are caused by the stimulation of plant immune responses known as initiation of systemic resistance (ISR) which is mediated by triggering plant immune responses elicited through pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs). The ISR triggered in the infected region of the plant leads to the development of systemic acquired resistance (SAR) throughout the plant making the plant resistant to a wide range of pathogens. A number of PGPRs including Pseudomonas and Bacillus genera have proven their ability to stimulate ISR. However, there are still some challenges in the large-scale application and acceptance of PGPR for pest and disease management. Further, we discuss the newly formulated PGPR inoculants possessing both plant growth-promoting activities and plant disease suppression ability for a holistic approach to sustaining plant health and enhancing crop productivity.

Abstract
Heat stress is one of the major abiotic factors that limit the growth, development, and productivity of plants. Both glycine betaine (GB) and β-aminobutyric acid (BABA) have received considerable attention due to their roles in stimulating tolerance to diverse abiotic stresses. In order to understand how GB and BABA biostimulants alleviate heat stress in a cool-weather Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L. ssp. pekinensis) plant, we investigated the GB- and BABA-primed heat-stressed plants in terms of their morpho-physiological and biochemical traits. Priming with GB (15 mM) and BABA (0.2 mM) was conducted at the third leaf stage by applying foliar sprays daily for 5 days before 5 days of heat stress (45 °C in 16 h light/35 °C in 8 h dark) on Chinese cabbage seedlings. The results indicate that GB and BABA significantly increased chlorophyll content, and the parameters of both gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence, of Chinese cabbage under heat stress. Compared with the unprimed heat-stressed control, the dry weights of GB- and BABA-primed plants were significantly increased by 36.36% and 45.45%, respectively. GB and BABA priming also greatly mitigated membrane damage, as indicated by the reduction in malondialdehyde (MDA) and electrolyte leakage through the elevation of proline content, and increased activity levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX). Taken together, GB and BABA have great potential to enhance the thermotolerance of Chinese cabbage through higher photosynthesis performance, osmoprotection, and antioxidant enzyme activity.

Abstract
Induced resistance is a promising strategy to manage plant disease, while adequate energy supply is crucial to plant defense. Our previous study has revealed that PpWRKY45 and PpWRKY70 are involved in MeJA-primed disease resistance by regulating jasmonate acid biosynthesis and phenylpropanoid metabolism. Herein, the possible role of WRKYs in MeJA-primed disease resistance and energy metabolism was investigated. PpWRKY46 and PpWRKY53 were up- and down-regulated, respectively, by MeJA treatment. The activities and gene expression of energy metabolism-related enzymes and energy status were promoted by MeJA treatment and R. stolonifer inoculation during 60 h storage at 20 °C. Energy metabolism-related genes, including PpSDH and PpCOX15 were transactivated by PpWRKY46, but repressed by PpWRKY53. Furthermore, PpWRKY46 interacted with PpWRKY53 to attenuate the transcriptional repression of PpWRKY53 to PpSDH and PpCOX15. Taken together, our results demonstrated that the counteraction of PpWRKY46 and PpWRKY53 contributes to MeJA-primed defense by regulating energy metabolism in peaches.

Abstract
Induction of phytoalexin production after invading pathogens is recognized as an essential aspect of the plant-induced resistance. The WRKY family includes plant-specific transcriptional factors associated with plant defense responses, but the comprehensive mechanisms are poorly understood. Here, we attempted to elaborate the regulatory function of VvWRKY18 from the group IIa of WRKY transcription factor (TF) from Vitis vinifera, in the regulation of β-aminobutyric acid (BABA)-activated stilbene phytoalexins biosynthesis and PATHOGENESIS-RELATED (PR) genes expressions in grapes. BABA at 10 mmol L-1 triggered a priming protection in grapes and conferred a potentiation of the expression levels of VvWRKY18, VvNPR1, and several salicylic acid (SA)-responsive genes, which was accompanied by enhanced stilbene production upon Botrytis cinerea infection. In addition, a physical interaction between VvWRKY18 and the regulatory protein VvNPR1 was detected in vivo and in vitro by yeast-2-hybrid (Y2H), pull-down and co-immunoprecipitation assay (Co-IP) assays. Furthermore, yeast-1-hybrid (Y1H) and dual-luciferase reporter (DLR) assays indicated that VvWRKY18 activated the transcription of STILBENE SYNTHASE (STS) genes, including VvSTS1 and VvSTS2, by directly binding the W-box elements within the specific promoters and resultantly enhancing stilbene phytoalexins biosynthesis. Further investigation demonstrated that heterologous expression of VvWRKY18 elevated the transcriptions of STS and PR genes, thus contributing to potentiating the defense of transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana plants and resultantly inhibiting B. cinerea invasion. Hence, VvWRKY18 serves as a singular effector involved in the synthesis of stilbene phytoalexins in grapes and its interaction with VvNPR1 provided DNA binding ability required for VvNPR1 to initiate systemic acquired resistance (SAR) defense.

Abstract
Litchis are tasty fruit with economic importance. However, the extreme susceptibility of harvested litchis to litchi downy blight caused by Peronophythora litchii leads to compromised quality. This study aimed to study the effects of melatonin on postharvest resistance to P. litchii in 'Feizixiao' litchis. Results showed that melatonin restricted lesion expansion in litchis after P. litchi inoculation. Melatonin enhanced the activities of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, cinnamate-4-hydroxylase and 4-hydroxycinnamate CoA ligase while promoting the accumulations of phenolics and flavonoids. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate content and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and 6-phosphogluconic acid dehydrogenase activities were higher in treated fruit than control fruit. Higher energy status along with elevated H+-ATPase, Ca2+-ATPase, succinate dehydrogenase and cytochrome C oxidase activities were observed in treated fruit. Ultrastructural observation showed reduced damage in mitochondria in treated fruit. The results suggest that melatonin induced resistance in litchis by modulating the phenylpropanoid and pentose phosphate pathways as well as energy metabolism. .

Abstract
Green mold, caused by Penicillium digitatum, is the most economically important postharvest disease of orange fruit worldwide. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of β-aminobutyric acid (BABA) treatment on the inhibition of P. digitatum both in orange fruit and in vitro as well as the possible mechanisms of action. BABA at 125 mM significantly inhibited mycelial growth, spore germination, and germ tube elongation of P. digitatum by 93.3, 90.3, and 90.5%, respectively. The relative electrical conductivity of mycelium was increased for a period of 0-36 h after treated with BABA at 125 mM. Furthermore, BABA caused a high level of malondialdehyde (MDA) in P. digitatum mycelia during four days of incubation. The ergosterol content in the plasma membrane of P. digitatum was significantly lower in BABA-treated mycelia. Also, protein and sugar leakage were increased with BABA treatment compared with that in the control. Besides, BABA caused a considerable reduction in the total lipid content of P. digitatum mycelia at 125 mM. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of P. digitatum treated with BABA at 125 mM showed shrunken, distorted, and collapsed mycelia. The application of BABA at 125 mM in orange fruit inoculated with P. digitatum suppressed disease incidence and disease severity by 74.6 and 77.3%, respectively, compared to untreated fruit. Moreover, the activity of defense-related enzymes, including peroxidase (POD), polyphenoloxidase (PPO), and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) were significantly enhanced in the orange fruit treated with BABA at 125 mM.

Abstract
Green mold (Penicillium digitatum) and blue mold (Penicillium italicum) are among the most economically impactful post-harvest diseases of citrus fruit worldwide. Post-harvest citrus diseases are largely controlled with synthetic fungicides such as pyrimethanil, imazalil, fludioxonil, and thiabendazole. Due to their toxic effects, prolonged and excessive application of these fungicides is gradually restricted in favor of safe and more eco-friendly alternatives. This review comprehensively describes alternative methods for the control of P. digitatum and P. italicum: (a) antagonistic micro-organisms, (b) plant extracts and essential oils, (c) biofungicides, (d) chitosan and chitosan-based citrus coatings, (e) heat treatments, (f) ionizing and non-ionizing irradiations, (g) food additives, and (h) synthetic elicitors. Integrating multiple approaches such as the application of biocontrol agents with food additives or heat treatments have overcome some drawbacks to single treatments. In addition, integrating treatment approaches could produce an additive or synergistic effect on controlling both molds for a satisfactory level of disease reduction in post-harvest citrus. Further research is warranted on plant resistance and fruit-pathogen interactions to develop safer strategies for the sustainable control of P. digitatum and P. italicum in citrus.

Abstract
Although heat shock proteins (HSPs), a family of ubiquitous molecular chaperones, are well characterized in heat stress-related responses, their function in plant defense remains largely unclear. Here, we report the role of VvHSP24, a class B HSP from Vitis vinifera, in β-aminobutyric acid (BABA)-induced priming defense against the necrotrophic fungus Botrytis cinerea in grapes. Grapes treated with 10 mmol L-1 BABA exhibited transiently increased transcript levels of VvNPR1 and several SA-inducible genes, including PR1, PR2, and PR5. Additionally, phytoalexins accumulated upon inoculation with the gray mold fungus B. cinerea, which coincided with the action of a priming mode implicated in pathogen-driven resistance. Intriguingly, electrophoretic mobility shift (EMSA), yeast two-hybrid (Y2H) and His pull-down assays demonstrated that the nuclear chaperone VvHSP24 cannot modulate the transcript of PR genes but does directly interact with VvNPR1 in vivo or in vitro. Furthermore, we found that VvHSP24 overexpression enhanced the transcript levels of NPR1 and SA-responsive genes (PR1, PR2, and PR5) and increased the resistance of transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana to B. cinerea compared with wildtype Col-0. An opposite trend between CRISPR mutants of AtHSFB1 (the orthologous gene of VvHSP24 in Arabidopsis) and wildtype plants was observed. Hence, our results suggest that VvHSP24 has a potential role in NPR1-dependent plant resistance to fungal pathogen. BABA-induced priming defense in grapes may require posttranslational modification of the chaperone VvHSP24 to activate VvNPR1 transcript, leading to PR gene expressions and resistance phenotypes.

Abstract
Either NPR1 or TGA1 serve as master redox-sensitive transcriptional regulators for the transcription of PR genes in plants. The redox modification of the two co-activators involved in BABA-induced priming resistance against Botrytis cinerea in grapes was examined in this study. The results showed that 10 mmol L-1 BABA could effectively trigger a priming defense in grapes as manifested by augmented expression levels of PR genes upon inoculation with B. cinerea. Moreover, transcriptome profiling analysis revealed that all of the sets of key genes in the enzymatic ROS scavenging system, the PPP and AsA-GSH cycle were in harmony and were transcriptionally induced in BABA-primed grapes with pathogenic infection; in addition, this enhanced expression caused the accelerated accumulation of reductive substances, namely, AsA, GSH and NADPH, resulting in reduced intercellular conditions. Under reduced conditions, the interaction of VvTGA1 and VvNPR1 in the Y2H assay implied that VvTGA1 can provide the DNA binding capacity required by VvNPR1 for activation of VvPR genes. Consequently, the transactivation of VvNPR1 by the promoters of VvPR1, VvPR2 and VvPR5 was determined via a DLR assay, and it induced the transcription of the VvPR genes. In parallel, the redox-modified reducing condition achieved with an abundant supply of reductive substances was closely associated with the translocation of NPR1 for interaction with TGA in the nucleus. Thus, the posttranslational modification and subsequent interaction of the two redox-sensitive co-activators of VvNPR1 and VvTGA1 under reduced conditions may be responsible for BABA-induced priming for effective disease resistance in grapes.

Abstract
This study attempted to characterize the involvement of a change in the redox status and subcellular localization in the BABA-induced priming resistance of peach fruit against Rhizopus rot. Specifically, 50 mM BABA primed the peaches for the enhanced disease resistance against R. stolonifer, as demonstrated by suppression of the disease development upon pathogen challenge accompanied by the clearly elevated level of TGA transcription factor (PpTGA1) and NPR1 gene (PpNPR1). In addition, the BABA elicitation enhanced the activities of a series of critical enzymes in the PPP and AsA-GSH cycle, and eventually promoted the NADPH and GSH pools, which altered the intracellular redox state towards a highly reductive condition. Additionally, PpTGA1-GFP was localized in the cytoplasm in the absence of BABA treatment or R. stolonifer inoculation, while BABA elicitation plus R. stolonifer inoculation caused PpTGA1-GFP to specifically translocate to the nucleus, where it interacted with PpNPR1 and regulated the positive expression of PR genes. Therefore, the observations implied that BABA could promote the reduction of the redox state, resulting in the translocation of PpTGA1 to the nucleus, which was a prerequisite for the induction of a priming defence against Rhizopus rot in peach.

Abstract
β-Aminobutyric acid (BABA) has consistently been reported to enhance plant immunity. However, the specific mechanisms and downstream components that mediate this resistance are not yet agreed upon. Nitric oxide (NO) is an important signal molecule involved in a diverse range of physiological processes, and whether NO is involved in BABA-induced resistance is interesting. In this study, treatment with BABA significantly increased NO accumulation and reduced the sensitivity to Botrytis cinerea in tomato plants. BABA treatment reduced physical signs of infection and increased both the transcription of key defense marker genes and the activity of defensive enzymes. Interestingly, compared to treatment with BABA alone, treatment with BABA plus cPTIO (NO specific scavenger) not only significantly reduced NO accumulation, but also increased disease incidence and lesion area. These results suggest that NO accumulation plays an important role in BABA-induced resistance against B. cinerea in tomato plants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pistachio fruits suffer from postharvest decay, caused by Aspergillus flavus. This results in aflatoxin B1 (AFB1 ) accumulation in kernels, which is hazardous for human health due to its carcinogenic activity. In this study, the mechanism used by exogenous β-aminobutyric acid (BABA) treatment for attenuating Aspergillus decay, minimizing aflatoxin B1 (AFB1 ) accumulation, and maintaining nutritional quality in fresh-in-hull pistachio kernels, infected by A. flavus during storage at 25 °C for 18 days, was investigated. RESULT Results of an in vivo assay showed that the spore germination and germ tube elongation of A. flavus was repressed by BABA treatment at 7.5 mM. Aspergillus decay accompanied by AFB1 accumulation was also minimized in fresh-in-hull pistachio kernels treated with BABA at 7.5 mM and infected by A. flavus. Fresh-in-hull pistachio kernels, infected by A. flavus, treated with BABA at 7.5 mM, also exhibited higher phenol and flavonoid accumulation and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging capacity accompanied by higher phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) enzyme activity. CONCLUSION Promoting phenylpropanoid pathway activity with higher PAL enzyme activity in fresh-in-hull pistachio kernels treated with BABA may not only reduce Aspergillus decay in kernels by cell wall fortification but also may be favorable for maintaining the kernels' nutritional quality through its effects on ROS scavenging capacity. As oxidative stress, represented by ROS accumulation, is responsible for A. flavus growth and AFB1 accumulation, higher phenol and flavonoid accumulation in fresh-in-hull pistachio kernels treated with BABA may be beneficial for attenuating Aspergillus decay and minimizing AFB1 accumulation. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Endophytic fungi possess favorable effects on their host plants, including disease-resistance improvement, secondary metabolite induction, and growth promotion. It is therefore a promising and sustainable strategy to utilize endophytic fungi for the quality improvement of medicinal herbs or important crops. In our study, a collection of 277 strains of endophytic fungi were isolated from Anoectochilus and Ludisia orchids. Two strains J162 and J211 can be symbiotically cocultured with the tissue culture seedlings of Anoectochilus roxburghii, a popular medicinal and edible plant in southern China. Both strains can significantly enhance the biomass of A. roxburghii and induce the biosynthesis and accumulation of its active ingredients, including flavonoids, kinsenoside, and polysaccharides. J162 and J211 were further identified as Chaetomium globosum and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides based on multilocus phylogenetic analysis. Immunocytochemical staining indicated that J162 and J211 mainly colonized the intercellular gap of xylem parenchyma cells of A. roxburghii roots without obvious harm. In addition, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction showed that the expression of three growth-related genes, namely, uracil phosphoribosyl transferase, amino acid transmembrane transporter, and maturase K, were significantly altered in A. roxburghii plants when treated with J162 and J211. In conclusion, the two strains are highly beneficial microbial resources for the growth and accumulation of active ingredients of A. roxburghii in agricultural cultivation.

Abstract
β-aminobutyric acid (BABA) is a new environmentally friendly agent to induce disease resistance by priming of defense in plants. However, molecular mechanisms underlying BABA-induced priming defense are not fully understood. Here, comprehensive analysis of priming mechanism of BABA-induced resistance was investigated based on mango-Colletotrichum gloeosporioides interaction system using iTRAQ-based proteome approach. Results showed that BABA treatments effectively inhibited the expansion of anthracnose caused by C. gleosporioides in mango fruit. Proteomic results revealed that stronger response to pathogen in BABA-primed mango fruit after C. gleosporioides inoculation might be attributed to differentially accumulated proteins involved in secondary metabolism, defense signaling and response, transcriptional regulation, protein post-translational modification, etc. Additionally, we testified the involvement of non-specific lipid-transfer protein (nsLTP) in the priming acquisition at early priming stage and memory in BABA-primed mango fruit. Meanwhile, spring effect was found in the primed mango fruit, indicated by inhibition of defense-related proteins at priming phase but stronger activation of defense response when exposure to pathogen compared with non-primed fruit. As an energy-saving strategy, BABA-induced priming might also alter sugar metabolism to provide more backbone for secondary metabolites biosynthesis. In sum, this study provided new clues to elucidate the mechanism of BABA-induced priming defense in harvested fruit.

Abstract
Mitochondria play an essential part in fighting against pathogen infection in the defense responses of fruits. In this study, we investigated the reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, energy metabolism, and changes of mitochondrial proteins in harvested muskmelon fruits ( Cucumis melo cv. Yujinxiang) inoculated with Trichothecium roseum. The results indicated that the fungal infection obviously induced the H2O2 accumulation in mitochondria. Enzyme activities were inhibited in the first 6 h postinoculation (hpi), including succinic dehydrogenase, cytochrome c oxidase, H+-ATPase, and Ca2+-ATPase. However, the activities of Ca2+-ATPase and H+-ATPase and the contents of intracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) were improved to a higher level at 12 hpi. A total of 42 differentially expressed proteins were identified through tandem mass tags-based proteomic analyses, which are mainly involved in energy metabolism, stress responses and redox homeostasis, glycolysis and tricarboxylic acid cycle, and transporter and mitochondria dysfunction. Taken together, our results suggest that mitochondria play crucial roles in the early defense responses of muskmelons against T. roseum infection through regulation of ROS production and energy metabolism.
