Nutrition Knowledge and Dietary Adequacy in Powerlifters

J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000-000, 2024-Athletes competing in weight categories (e.g., powerlifters) often restrict food intake approaching competition, which may be detrimental to health and performance. Our purpose was to assess the effect of nutrition knowledge, sex, and time (off-season versus precompetition, when athletes often cut weight) on dietary adequacy in powerlifters. Twenty-three powerlifters (10 females; 30.7 ± 11.2 years) completed questionnaires to assess nutrition knowledge and dietary adequacy. Athletes with higher nutrition knowledge consumed more fruits and nuts and less vitamin B2, B3 across all time points (p < 0.05) and a greater number (73%) were above the recommended dietary allowance for vitamin D compared with athletes with lower nutrition knowledge (50%) (p < 0.05). Male powerlifters with higher nutrition knowledge consumed less alcohol and vitamin A than male powerlifters with lower nutrition knowledge (p < 0.05). Female powerlifters with higher nutrition knowledge consumed less sugar and beverage calories than female powerlifters with lower nutrition knowledge (p < 0.05). Intake of alcohol and carbohydrate decreased, and meat calories increased from off-season to precompetition (p < 0.05). Male powerlifters increased B-vitamins, whereas female powerlifters decreased B-vitamin and sugar consumption approaching competition (p < 0.05). Male powerlifters increased water consumption versus female powerlifters approaching competition (sex × time, p < 0.05). There was no effect of nutrition knowledge on dietary changes approaching competition. Nutrition knowledge, sex, and competitive season affect dietary intake of powerlifters. A higher nutrition knowledge predicts a higher intake of some foods and nutrients important for health and performance. Female powerlifters should pay close attention to the intake of B-vitamins and water before competitions when many are trying to cut weight.

Development and validation of a photograph-based instrument to assess nutrition literacy: The NUTLY project

Most instruments measuring nutrition literacy evaluate theoretical knowledge, not necessarily reflecting skills relevant to food choices. We aimed to develop and validate a photograph-based instrument to assess nutrition literacy (NUTLY) among adults in Portugal. NUTLY assesses the ability to distinguish foods with different nutritional profiles; from each of several combinations of three photographs (two foods with similar contents and one with higher content) participants are asked to identify the food with the highest energy/sodium content. The NUTLY version with 79 combinations, obtained after experts/lay people evaluations, was applied to a sample representing different age, gender and education groups (n = 329). Dimensionality was evaluated through latent trait models. Combinations with negative or with positive small factor loadings were excluded after critical assessment. Internal consistency was measured using Cronbach's alpha and construct validity by comparing NUTLY scores with those obtained in the Medical Term Recognition Test and the Newest Vital Sign (NVS), and across education and training in nutrition/health groups. The cut-off to distinguish adequate/inadequate nutrition literacy was defined through ROC analysis using the Youden index criterion, after performing a Latent class analysis which identified a two-class model to have the best goodness of fit. Test-retest reliability was assessed after one month (n = 158). The final NUTLY scale was unidimensional and included 48 combinations (energy: 33; sodium: 15; α = 0.74). Mean scores (±standard deviation) were highest among nutritionists (39.9 ± 4.4), followed by health professionals (38.5 ± 4.1) and declined with decreasing education (p < 0.001). Those with adequate nutrition literacy according to NVS showed higher NUTLY scores (37.9 ± 4.3 vs. 33.9 ± 6.9, p < 0.001). Adequate nutrition literacy was defined as a NUTLY score≥35 (sensitivity: 89.3%; specificity: 93.7%). Test-retest reliability was high (ICC = 0.77). NUTLY is a valid and reliable nutrition literacy measurement tool.

Influencia de los hábitos y los conocimientos sobre alimentación en la sobrecarga ponderal según el ámbito de residencia: estudio transversal

OBJETIVO

comprobar la influencia de los conocimientos y los hábitos alimenticios en la sobrecarga ponderal según el ámbito de residencia (urbano o rural).

MÉTODO

se administró un cuestionario a 451 personas, residentes en la zona básica de salud de Villaviciosa (Asturias, España), entre 35 y 65 años, distribuidas en zona rural y urbana, formulario compuesto por preguntas sobre datos sociodemográficos, hábitos y conocimientos nutricionales. Se calcularon frecuencias relativas (%) para las variables cualitativas, y medias aritméticas (desviaciones estándar) para las cuantitativas. Se empleó la correlación de Pearson para comprobar o descartar la relación entre la puntuación en el cuestionario de conocimientos sobre nutrición y el índice de masa corporal (IMC). Para estudiar la relación entre cada pregunta del cuestionario de hábitos y el ámbito de residencia se empleó la prueba chi-cuadrado. Para comparar las medias del IMC por ámbito se aplicó la prueba t para muestras independientes. Se realizaron regresiones logísticas para calcular las odds ratio (OR) entre la variable dependiente (sobrecarga ponderal) y las variables sociodemográficas.

RESULTADOS

la edad media de los encuestados fue de 49.96 años y el IMC promedio de 26.87 kg/m2, presentando sobrecarga ponderal el 57.6 % total. No leer las etiquetas nutricionales aumenta el riesgo de tener sobrecarga ponderal (OR = 2.2; p = 0.001); quienes consideran que comen en exceso muchas veces presentan mayor probabilidad de sobrecarga ponderal (OR = 8.6; p < 0.001); comer fuera de casa varias veces por semana (OR = 11.6; p = 0.019), así como el consumo de refrescos o zumos procesados (OR = 3.3; p = 0.013) y alcohol de baja graduación (OR = 2.8; p = 0.003) durante las comidas aumentan la probabilidad de sobrecarga ponderal.

CONCLUSIONES

los hábitos alimenticios y los patrones de actividad física son los principales responsables de sobrecarga ponderal. El adecuado conocimiento en la población puede ayudar a la elaboración de un plan preventivo que permita frenar el crecimiento del sobrepeso y la obesidad.

Nutrition education has significant impact on perceived barriers to healthy diet among adults with and without COVID-19 history

Healthy diet is an important tool to lower the risk and severity of COVID-19 infection. Low diet quality is usually caused by perceived barriers that stop people to do certain behavior. Perceived barriers can be overcome by implementing proper method such as conducting nutrition education. This study aimed to analyze the impact of nutrition education on perceived barrier to healthy diet among adults with and without covid-19 history in Padang, Indonesia. This study was a pre-experimental study using pre and post-design. This study was conducted on 70 adults with or without COVID-19 infection history, residing in Padang, Indonesia. The intervention was given in the form of nutrition education. Difference test was conducted to assess the impact of nutrition education on respondents' nutrition knowledge and perceived barriers. The majority of the respondents both with and without COVID-19 history (71.4 and 80%) had medium level of nutritional knowledge before the intervention. After the intervention, there was a significant (P<0.05) improvement on respondents' nutritional knowledge for both groups (100%). The result also showed 40% of the respondents with COVID-19 history had medium level of perceived barriers, while 28.6% respondents without COVID-19 history (65.7%) had medium level of perceived barriers before the intervention. A significant improvement (P<0.05) also showed on respondents' perceived barriers after the intervention. On both groups more 90% of the respondents only had low level of perceived barriers. The result shows that nutrition education has significant impact both on respondents' nutritional knowledge and perceived barriers.

Nutrition knowledge, attitudes, and dietary practices among parents of children and adolescents in Weifang, China: A cross-sectional study

Parent's nutrition knowledge, attitudes, and dietary practices (KAP) play imperative roles in preventing malnutrition for themselves and their children. Our study aimed to determine the status and contributing factors of nutrition KAP among parents of children and adolescents. A total of 1746 parents (mean age 39.67 ± 5.38 years, females accounting for 69.82%) of primary and junior high school students in Weifang, China, completed a self-reported KAP questionnaire in August 2021. An analysis of Pearson product-moment correlation was conducted to determine the relationship between knowledge, attitudes, and practices. Chi-square test, followed by a multivariable robust Poisson regression analysis, was performed to identify the contributing factors to parents' KAP. A 65.94% awareness rate of nutritional knowledge was observed. The correlations between nutrition knowledge and attitudes (r = 0.03, P = 0.23), knowledge and practices (r = 0.02, P = 0.34), and attitudes and practices (r = 0.16, P < 0.01) were relatively weak. After adjusting for other contributing factors, females [prevalence ratio (PR) = 1.28, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.13-1.45], participants with secondary education (PR = 4.64, 95% CI = 1.60-13.50), junior college education (PR = 5.87, 95% CI = 2.01-17.13) and college degree or above education (PR = 6.58, 95% CI = 2.25-19.23) acquired higher nutrition knowledge scores. Moreover, healthy diet behaviors were more commonly implemented by females than males (PR = 1.42, 95% CI = 1.14-1.76), and which needed to be improved in those with abnormal body mass indexes (BMIs) [overweight (PR = 0.86, 95% CI = 0.74-0.99) and obese (PR = 0.76, 95% CI = 0.56-0.99)]. It was necessary for nutrition KAP promotion to be emphasized in nutritional knowledge and dietary practices, as well as health behavior guidance, especially for parents with low education and elevated BMIs.

Perspectives on Healthy Eating of Adult Populations in High-Income Countries: A Qualitative Evidence Synthesis

BACKGROUND

Understanding how individuals currently perceive healthy eating is essential for developing food policies and dietary recommendations that improve the health and well-being of populations. The purpose of this qualitative evidence synthesis was to systematically outline the views and understandings of healthy eating, focusing on how foods are classified as healthy and unhealthy and what meanings are attached to food and eating by the general adult population in high-income countries.

METHODS

A systematic search of four electronic databases was conducted and yielded 24 relevant primary qualitative studies of generally healthy, community-dwelling adults.

RESULTS

Thematic synthesis of the included studies identified three analytic themes: constructions of healthy and unhealthy eating, considerations on dietary recommendations, and meanings attached to food and eating. Study participants generally understood what constitutes a healthy and unhealthy diet which was in line with dietary recommendations, but those of lower socioeconomic status exhibited gaps in nutrition knowledge. Participants expressed diverse opinions on dietary recommendations, including skepticism and a lack of trust. Food and eating were associated with various meanings, including pleasure, stress relief, and feelings of guilt. Moral, health, and sociocultural considerations also played a role in dietary behaviors.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings suggest that improving population diet requires considering how dietary recommendations are phrased and communicated to ensure that healthy eating is associated with pleasure and immediate well-being. This review provides valuable insights for developing consumer-oriented, practicable, and acceptable food policies and dietary recommendations that effectively improve population health and well-being.

Do nutrition knowledge, food preferences, and habit strength moderate the association between preference for intuition and deliberation in eating decision-making and dietary intake?

An intuitive style in eating decision-making, for example, basing decisions on one's gut feeling, has been related to a less healthy diet, whereas deliberately deciding what to eat, such as making plans about eating behavior, has been related to a healthier diet. The present study investigated whether nutrition knowledge, food preferences, and habit strength for healthy and unhealthy eating moderate these relationships. In total, 1245 participants took part in a preregistered cross-sectional online survey. Results revealed that neither nutrition knowledge, nor liking of healthy or unhealthy foods, nor habit strength for healthy or unhealthy eating interacted with the preference for intuition or deliberation in eating decision-making in affecting dietary intake (βs ≤ |.06|; ts ≤ |2.11|; ps ≥ .035). Instead, including the potential moderating variables in analyses rendered the effect of a preference for intuition largely non-significant. In contrast, the positive effect of a preference for deliberation was largely stable even when including the potential moderating variables. Thus, the present study confirms the general health-promoting effect of a preference for deliberation in eating decision-making. In contrast, results speak in favor of a generally minor role of a preference for intuition for healthy or unhealthy eating.

Development of a questionnaire on nutritional knowledge for the obese hospitalized patient: the NUTRIKOB questionnaire

Introduction

Different approaches, involving different areas and figures, are useful for the rehabilitation of obese subjects through a multidisciplinary hospital path. A focal point of rehabilitation is represented by education on healthy eating by increasing the dietary knowledge patients. Few tools investigating food knowledge are available in Italy: therefore, the need has emerged to develop easy-to-use tools for clinical practice that allow to detect food knowledge to set up a more targeted food re-education. The following work aimed at building and validating a questionnaire capable of investigating the dietary knowledge of the population affected by obesity.

Methods

A pool of experts carried out a review of the literature, gathering all the information necessary to select and construct the best set of questions and the format of the final project of the questionnaire. During statistical analysis the validity, reproducibility and stability of the questionnaire were investigate in a sample of 450 subjects with obesity.

Results

Early analysis disclosed that 5 questions of the original questionnaire had no discriminating power. The successive validation phases were successful, confirming good content validity, stability and reproducibility over time.

Discussion

The questionnaire has all the characteristics to be considered a valid tool for investigating dietary knowledge in the obese population. The psychometric tests confirmed a good internal consistency of the structure, a validity of the content, a good reproducibility and stability over time.

Exploration of the nutrition knowledge among general population: multi-national study in Arab countries

BACKGROUND

Knowing what to eat and realizing the significance of healthful eating habits are among the important steps to promoting eating behavior. The current study aims to assess the nutrition knowledge (NK) among a convenient sample in four different countries, determine the association between different demographic factors and NK, and investigate the need for future interventions on nutrition in the four selected countries.

METHODS

A cross-sectional multi-national survey study among a convenient sample of 8,191 subjects from Egypt, Syria, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan who undertook surveys between January 2019 and January 2020. A pre-tested interview questionnaire was utilized for data collection from study participants. It included three sections: i) Sociodemographic characteristics:. ii). Section two included twenty-one questions related to NK.. iii). Section three included one question about NK sources.

RESULTS

About three-quarters showed inadequate nutrition knowledge (73.1%). Youth (15-24 yrs.) were more dependent on social media, with 87% using it as a primary source of NK, while adults (≥ 25 yrs.) demonstrated that 43% of them used social media. In contrast, TV was more prominent among them, with participants' characteristics such as living with parents, body mass index, and country of residence showing no association with NK. However, female sex, education, and reading nutrition articles are significantly correlated with adequate knowledge (p < 0.001). Significant predictors of satisfactory knowledge were age, sex, education, living with parents, and reading nutrition articles.

CONCLUSION

The study revealed low levels of NK indicating an urgent need to implement educational programs to promote nutrition knowledge. As NK is a modifiable determinant of diet intake and can positively impact the need for developing strategies in counselling and raising awareness among the general population to improve their health status.

Revisiting fruit and vegetable determinants: Evidence from Latin America

Introduction

In the past decade, the public health discussion regarding fruit and vegetable (FV) consumption has been dominated by economic and physical accessibility.

Methods

Using an online survey in four Latin American countries, we applied a set of tobit models to compare the determinants of desirable and current consumption of FV levels for satisfied and unsatisfied respondents.

Results

We found that, even when consuming less than five FV portions a day, most of the respondents were satisfied with their current FV consumption level. Satisfied respondents consumed significantly more FV than unsatisfied ones. In general, the desirable and current consumption of FV levels were associated with different sets of determinants, while years of education were relevant in both cases. Finally, in a hypothetical case where unsatisfied respondents would not face any physical or economic access restrictions, unsatisfied respondents would not reach the goal of five FV portions a day.

Discussion

Assuming that physical and economic access improved, this would automatically increase FV to reach the five-a-day recommendation may be inaccurate in some cases. We also need to take mental access into account. We may ask how to improve the desirable level of FVs and then how to close the gap between the current and desirable FV levels.

Determinants of Honey and Other Bee Products Use for Culinary, Cosmetic, and Medical Purposes

Bee products have been used for centuries for culinary, medicinal, and cosmetic purposes, and their properties are still a subject of research, which provide new arguments in favour of their use. The research aimed to determine the current state of use of bee products by Polish consumers and determine the ways and conditions of their use, with particular reference to the level of nutritional knowledge and health status. The survey was conducted using the CAWI (Computer-Assisted Web Interview) method on 487 respondents. It was found that honey is used mainly for culinary purposes and, to a lesser extent, for medicinal and cosmetic purposes. Other bee products are much less commonly used than honey-mainly beeswax and royal jelly for cosmetic purposes and propolis and bee pollen for medicinal purposes. Segments distinguished by the frequency of use of honey for particular purposes were differentiated by gender, age, income level, use of other bee products, and motivation to use them. Their differences were also found in terms of the level of nutritional knowledge and self-assessed health status-the highest ratings in both categories were indicated by representatives of the Honey users' segment, which consisted of people who use honey most frequently for cooking, cosmetic and medicinal purposes. Regression analysis additionally showed that higher levels of nutritional knowledge and better health status were associated with the use of honey to treat gastrointestinal ailments and with the use of propolis for medicinal purposes.

A cross-sectional survey study on the nutrition patterns of patients with peripheral artery disease

Background: Even though nutrition was demonstrated to have an impact on chronic atherosclerotic disease, there is a paucity of corresponding recommendations for patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD). A Mediterranean Diet based on daily intake of fruits and vegetables with high fibre, vegetable oil, and unsalted nuts including fish several times a week may have protective effects. This cross-sectional survey aimed to determine nutritional patterns amongst inpatients with PAD. Methods: All inpatients with symptomatic PAD who underwent revascularisation at a single centre between 1^st May 2018 and 31^st December 2021 were asked to fill out a questionnaire on nutritional intake. An 8-item frequency rating scale (from never to three times a day) was used for 15 food groups. For 11 of them, an adapted Mediterranean Diet score was calculated using the answers. The descriptive results were stratified by sex and disease stage (intermittent claudication vs. chronic limb-threatening ischaemia). Results: A total of 319 patients (31.7% female, 69.4 years in mean) were included. Thereof, 71.8% reported they did never receive any nutritional information considering their PAD disease. The mean adapted Mediterranean Diet score was 2.7 points (of maximum 11) with most patients not achieving the recommended servings per week for fruits (1.6%), vegetables (1.0%), and unsalted nuts (12.2%). The intake of cereals was sufficient (43.3%). When compared with men, women consumed more fruits and less meat. Conclusions: This survey demonstrated that although healthy nutrition may have a positive impact on patients with PAD, the education and adherence to a Mediterranean Diet was inappropriate. Nutritional patterns should be more focused in future PAD studies to derive specific recommendations and nutritional programmes as well as patient education in clinical practice.

Effect of Warning Labels on Consumer Motivation and Intention to Avoid Consuming Processed Foods

Nutritional warnings (NWs) as a front-of-package label were implemented as a public policy aiding consumers with recognizing processed foods with high levels of critical nutrients (sodium, saturated fats, carbohydrates, and calories). However, in spite of this tool being well positioned in consumer decision making, there is little extant knowledge about the relationship between the message sent by NW, nutritional knowledge, consumer motivation, and the intention to avoid consuming processed foods. To understand these dimensions’ relations, a theoretical model was created and subsequently tested through structural equations. We applied a survey to 807 home food purchasing decision makers. The results show that the direct effect of NW messages raises the intention to avoid processed foods, while eating motivation is negative in its direct effect on the same avoidance intention. However, the message sent by NWs had a mediating effect between the intentions to avoid processed food and eating motivation but showed no such effect on nutritional knowledge. This suggests that the message sent by NWs was able to turn negative eating motivation into positive eating motivation to avoid processed foods. In conclusion, NWs help mitigate eating motivations, as well as boost the intention to avoid processed foods.

Nutrition Knowledge as a Driver of Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet in Italy

Background

An optimal Nutrition knowledge (NK) among the population could result in greater Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (AMD), a recognized dietary pattern capable of preventing chronic food-related diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the association between NK and AMD in Italy.

Methods

A national representative sample of 2,869 adults took part in an assessment that was carried out through a self-administrated questionnaire including sections relating to NK and AMD. AMD was evaluated following the PREDIMED PLUS methodology. Descriptive statistics were provided, and ordinal measures of NK score and AMD were calculated based on quartiles of the quantitative scores. A contingency analysis was performed to check associations between variables.

Results

In Italy, the average NK score was 50 ± 13.3, equivalent to 56.8% of correct answers. The average value of AMD was 6.8, corresponding to 40% of the maximum score with 31.4% of the population demonstrating low AMD, 31.3% in the lower-middle range, 24% in the medium-high range, and only 13.3% reporting a high AMD. A significant association between NK and AMD was found; respondents who reported the lowest AMD corresponded to those with the lowest NK (36.7%; p < 0.05) and similarly, those with the highest level of adherence to MD also achieved the highest NK scores (41.7%; p < 0.05).

Conclusion

This study showed that AMD in Italy is generally low, and the strong association between NK and AMD demonstrated that there is a clear connection between a healthy dietary pattern and the nutrition literacy of the population. Those with the highest AMD corresponded to the highest NK and, conversely, those with the lowest AMD displayed the lowest NK. The study also highlighted that socioeconomic aspects were strong determinants of both AMD and NK.

Parental and Child Factors Associated With 2- to 6-Year-Old Children's Diet Quality in Finland

BACKGROUND

There is limited evidence about diet quality and associated factors in a representative population-based sample of preschool-aged children in Finland.

OBJECTIVE

The aims of this study were to investigate (1) the extent to which child diet quality and the consumption of health indicator foods (vegetables, fruits, berries, vegetable oil-based spread, nonfat milk) are in accordance with Finnish recommendations for preschool-aged children, (2) whether diet quality differs between children with underweight or normal weight compared with children with overweight or obesity, and (3) whether parental or child factors are related to children's diet quality.

DESIGN

This was a cross-sectional study.

PARTICIPANTS/SETTING

Healthy children aged 2 to 6 years (n = 766) were recruited from child health clinics across Finland from February to June 2016.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

Diet quality and consumption of the health indicator foods were assessed by the Children's Index of Diet Quality (CIDQ, score 0-21, values < 10 indicate poor; 10-13.5, moderate; and ≥14, good diet quality). Parental information was collected with a self-administered questionnaire. Child weight and height were measured by child health clinic nurses.

STATISTICAL ANALYSES

The overweight/obesity status and diet quality of the children were compared with 1-way analysis of variance. One-way analysis of variance was used as the preliminary analysis between child and parental factors and CIDQ scores, and linear mixed model analysis to further analyze the relationship between child and parental factors and CIDQ data.

RESULTS

Only a small minority (13.7%) of the children had a good diet quality, 55.4% had a moderate diet quality, and 30.9% had a poor diet quality. Only 1% of the children consumed the key health indicator foods, namely vegetables, fruits, and berries, as recommended. Diet quality did not differ between children with underweight/normal weight and overweight/obesity. Instead, the child's younger age, parents' higher education, and parents' self-perceived healthy diet were related to good diet quality in the child.

CONCLUSIONS

The diet quality was moderate or poor in the majority of the children. Parental characteristics were the main factors related to the child's diet quality. The results suggest that future efforts to improve preschool-aged children's diet quality are needed including efforts to counsel families in pediatric care. Whether the findings from the current study also apply to Finnish school-aged children should be investigated further.
