Red and White Meat Intake in Relation to Mental Disorders in Iranian Adults

Association between 29 food groups of diet quality questionnaire and perceived stress in Chinese adults: a prospective study from China health and nutrition survey

PURPOSE

Diet plays a fundamental role in promoting resilience against stress-related disorders. We aimed to examine the overall and sex-specific association between food groups and perceived stress in adults.

METHODS

We analyzed the prospective data of 7,434 adults who completed both the 2011 and 2015 surveys of the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS). The Diet Quality Questionnaire (DQQ) was used to code all the food items of 2011 dietary intake into 29 food groups, and perceived stress in 2015 was measured using a 14-item perceived stress scale (PSS-14). Univariate analysis and logistic regression models were used to examine the relationship between food groups and perceived stress.

RESULTS

People who perceived a higher level of stress (PSS-14 total score > 25) made up 41.5% and 45.1% of the male and female groups, respectively (χ2 = 9.605, p = 0.002). Individuals with increased intake of food groups such as legumes, other vegetables, other fruits, yogurt, poultry, fish & seafood, fluid milk, and fruit juice were less likely to experience a higher level of psychological stress (OR range: 0.544-0.892, p < 0.05). Additionally, we found sex-specific associations between food groups and perceived stress. The difference in the proportion of food groups, such as fluid milk and fish & seafood, between the two stress groups in men was statistically significant (p < 0.025). In the female group, the distribution of eight food groups, like legumes and nuts & seeds, between the two stress groups was statistically significant (p < 0.025).

CONCLUSION

This study indicated that food groups were differentially associated with perceived stress.

Genetically predicted processed meat, red meat intake, and risk of mental disorders: A multivariable Mendelian randomization analysis

BACKGROUND

Previous observational studies have highlighted potential links between the consumption of processed meat and red meat (such as pork, mutton, and beef intake) and the occurrence of mental disorders. However, it is unclear whether a causal association exists. Therefore, we employed the Mendelian randomization (MR) study to investigate the causal effects of genetically predicted processed meat and red meat on mood disorders (MD), anxiety disorders (AD), and major depressive disorder (MDD).

METHODS

Genetic instruments for processed and red meat were selected from the Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS) of the UK Biobank Study. Their associations with MD (42,746 cases 254,976), AD (35,385 cases and 254,976 controls), and MDD (38,225 cases and 299,886 controls) were obtained from the FinnGen Consortium. The inverse variance weighted (IVW) method was the primary method for two-sample MR analysis. Additionally, we employed complementary analysis to assess the robustness of our MR findings (eg, MR Egger and weighted median). We also conducted multiple sensitivity analyses to investigate horizontal pleiotropy and heterogeneity. Moreover, we performed a univariate and multivariable MR (MVMR) study to evaluate these associations.

RESULTS

In our univariate MR analysis, we observed that genetically predicted beef intake was associated with a reduced risk of MD [odds ratio (OR) = 0.403, 95 % confidence interval (CI) = 0.246-0.659; PIVW = 4.428 × 10-5], AD (OR = 0.443, 95 % CI = 0.267-0.734; PIVW = 1.563 × 10-3), and MDD (OR = 0.373, 95 % CI = 0.216-0.643; PIVW = 3.878 × 10-4). After adjusting for processed meat, pork, and mutton intake in the MVMR analysis, the protective association of beef intake against MD and MDD remained. However, there was no substantial evidence indicating a significant causal relationship between processed meat, pork, and mutton intake and the occurrence of mental disorders. Furthermore, our sensitivity analysis revealed no significant evidence of horizontal pleiotropy.

CONCLUSION

These findings support a causal relationship between genetically predicted beef intake and reducing the risk of MD and MDD.

Association between Western Dietary Patterns, Typical Food Groups, and Behavioral Health Disorders: An Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies

Western dietary patterns (WDP) and typical food groups may play a major role in the risk of behavioral health disorders. Nevertheless, the relationships between WDP, common food categories, and mental health disorders lack consistency and remain incompletely understood in relation to potential mechanisms. Therefore, the objective of the present study was conducted to synthesize available evidence linking WDP and typical food groups to these outcomes. Web of Science, PubMed, EMBASE, and MEDLINE were searched up to August 2023. Random effect meta-analyses were performed to obtain pooled odds ratio and the relative risk for the prevalence of outcomes and the incidence of outcomes, respectively. A total of 54 articles were included. WDP was associated with increased risk of both depression (1.19; 95% CI: 1.06-1.32) and depressive symptoms (1.20; 95% CI: 1.08-1.34). Except for high-fat dairy products, food groups are associated with an increased risk of anxiety, depression, and depressive symptoms. This review presents evidence to further understand the relationship between WDP, typical food groups, and the incidence of behavioral health disorders, and more randomized controlled trials and cohort studies are urgently required to confirm these findings and elucidate potential mechanisms.

Implication of red meat consumption habits in serum uric acid levels and mood disorders among first-trimester pregnant women

BACKGROUND

Dietary pattern involving meat consumption has an association with serum uric acid level which subsequently has an impact on moods. However, this relationship is not clearly established in pregnant women, particularly those who are accustomed to daily meat consumption.

OBJECTIVE

This study investigated the relationship between red meat consumption and uric acid level and the subsequent impact on mood disorders in 1st trimester pregnant women.

METHODOLOGY

A total of 92 pregnant women in their first trimester (8-12 weeks), were selected for this study. Socio-demographic characteristics including age, body mass index (BMI), educational qualification, sleep hours, blood pressure and exercise status were recorded. To assess meat consumption, classification based on the recruited population consumption was divided into low and high meat consumption groups. Serum uric acid level was estimated in plasma. Mood disorder, namely, depression and anxiety were assessed using a self-reported Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) questionnaire. Collected data was analysed using different statistical tools.

RESULTS

Logistic regression analysis showed higher odds of depression (OR = 0.059, 95% CI 0.02-0.172, p < 0.001) and anxiety (OR = 0.144, 95% CI 0.055-0.375, p < 0.001) in the high meat consumption group. Further, the potential confounders, high BMI and less exercise increased the odds of depression and anxiety in high meat consumption groups. Linear regression analysis revealed a significant influence of meat consumption on uric acid level (F (1, 90) = 305.385, p < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

The study recommends regular clinical screening of mood disorders, and recommends reasonable consumption of lean meat and/or replacing some portions with fish, as well as, a commitment to eating a healthy, balanced diet. It also suggests extensive studies because it could be linked to postpartum mood disorders among those who consume red meat every day.

Relationship between dietary pattern and depressive symptoms: an international multicohort study

BACKGROUND

Several previous studies have shown that dietary patterns are associated with the incidence of depressive symptoms. However, the results have been inconsistent. This study aimed to prospectively investigate the association between dietary patterns and the risk of depressive symptoms in two large cohort studies.

METHODS

The Tianjin Chronic Low-grade Systemic Inflammation and Health (TCLSIH) cohort study included a total of 7,094 participants living in Tianjin, China from 2013 to 2019, and the UK Biobank cohort study includes 96,810 participants who were recruited from 22 assessment centers across the UK taken between 2006 and 2010. All participants were free of a history of cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer, and depressive symptoms at baseline. Dietary patterns at baseline were identified with factor analysis based on responses to a validated food frequency questionnaire in TCLSIH or Oxford WebQ in UK Biobank. Depressive symptoms were evaluated using the Chinese version of the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) in TCLSIH or hospital inpatient records in UK Biobank. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate the association between dietary patterns and depressive symptoms.

RESULTS

A total of 989, and 1,303 participants developed depressive symptoms during 17,410 and 709,931 person-years of follow-up. After adjusting for several potential confounders, the multivariable HRs (95% CIs) of the depressive symptoms were 0.71 (0.57, 0.88) for traditional Chinese dietary pattern, 1.29 (1.07, 1.55) for processed animal offal included animal food dietary pattern, and 1.22 (1.02, 1.46) for sugar rich dietary pattern in TCLSIH (all Q4 vs Q1). In the UK Biobank, the HRs (95% CIs) of depressive symptoms were 1.39 (1.16, 1.68) for processed food dietary pattern (Q4 vs Q1), 0.90 (0.77, 1.00) for healthy dietary pattern (Q3 vs Q1), and 0.89 (0.75, 1.05) for meat dietary pattern (Q4 vs Q1) in the final adjusted model.

CONCLUSION

Dietary patterns rich in processed foods were associated with a higher risk of depressive symptoms, and following a traditional Chinese dietary pattern or healthy dietary pattern was associated with a lower risk of depressive symptoms, whereas meat dietary pattern was not associated.

Association of Soyfoods or Soybean Products Consumption with Psychological Symptoms: Evidence from a Cross-Sectional Study of Chinese University Students during the COVID-19 Pandemic

There is a strong association between soyfoods or soybean product consumption and adolescent health, but there are few studies on the association between soyfoods or soybean product consumption and psychological symptoms among university students. To this end, this study investigated the association between soyfoods or soybean products consumption and psychological symptoms among Chinese university students and analyzed the association between them. A three-stage stratified whole-group sampling method was used to administer questionnaires on soyfoods or soybean products consumption and psychological symptoms to 7742 university students in China. Self-assessment questionnaires were also administered to confounding variables such as basic demographic information, family status, parental education, body mass index (BMI), and moderate and vigorous physical activity (MVPA). The chi-square test, one-way ANOVA, and logistic regression analysis were used to explore the association and differences between soyfoods or soybean products consumption and psychological symptoms. The proportion of Chinese university students' soyfoods or soybean products consumption in ≤one time/week, two-four times/week, and ≥five times/week were 38.81%, 40.24%, and 20.95%, respectively. University students' psychological symptoms problem detection rate was 16.22%. The detection rate of psychological symptoms was lower among university male students (14.75%) than female students (17.35%), and the difference was statistically significant (χ² = 9.525, p < 0.01). After adjusting for relevant covariates, students with soyfoods or soybean products consumption ≤one time/week (OR = 1.83, 95% CI:1.52, 2.21) had a higher risk of psychological symptoms compared to university students with soyfoods or soybean products consumption ≥five time/week (p < 0.01). During the COVID-19 pandemic, Chinese university students had lower consumption of soyfoods or soybean products and a higher detection rate of psychological symptoms. There was a negative association between soyfoods or soybean products consumption and psychological symptoms. Our study provides a scientific reference for the government and educational decision-making authorities and suggests that education on eating behavior and dietary guidance should be emphasized among university students in the future to maintain a reasonable consumption of soyfoods or soybean products for better physical and mental health development.

The association of dietary macronutrient quality indices with depression and anxiety symptoms and quality of life in Iranian adults: The LipoKAP study

BACKGROUND

Macronutrients' quality may impact differently on mental health and quality of life (QOL). This study aimed to investigate the potential relationship between the carbohydrate quality index (CQI), fat quality index (FQI), protein quality index (PQI), the affective mental symptoms and QOL among Iranian adults.

METHODS

The LipoKAP is a cross-sectional study, conducted with 2456 adults in Iran. A validated food frequency questionnaire was used to evaluate usual dietary intakes. A validated Iranian version of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale was used to assess the severity of anxiety and depression. QOL was assessed by EQ-5D.

RESULT

In the fully adjusted model, participants in the highest tertile of CQI had lower QOL than those in the lowest tertile (OR = 1.35; 95 % CI: 1.06, 1.73). Individuals in the top tertile of FQI (OR = 0.71; 95 % CI: 0.55, 0.91) and PQI (OR = 0.78; 95 % CI: 0.60; 1.01) were less likely to report lower QOL than those in the bottom tertile. An inverse association was found between PQI and depressive symptoms (OR = 0.72, 95 % CI: 0.55, 0.95), but not for CQI and FQI.

LIMITATIONS

The cross-sectional design of the study and the use of a memory-based dietary tool may limit the generalizability of our findings.

CONCLUSION

Higher PQI was associated with lower risk of depressive symptoms and having a low-quality life. Although CQI and FQI were not related to depressive and anxiety symptoms, higher values of FQI were associated with better QOL, while CQI showed an inverse association.

Associations between Depression, Nutritional Status and Mediterranean Diet in Dalmatian Kidney Transplant Recipients

Depression has been addressed as a predictor of worse outcomes in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs). Nutritional status plays a great role in treatment of this population. The Mediterranean diet (MeDi) has been associated with lower levels of depressive symptoms. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine the rate of depression and its correlations to nutritional status and dietary habits according to the MeDi in Dalmatian KTRs. We included 115 KTRs, and data about body composition and anthropometric, laboratory and clinical parameters were obtained for each study participant. The Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) questionnaire was used to assess depressive symptoms and the Mediterranean Diet Serving Score (MDSS) was used to assess adherence to the MeDi. We found the presence of depressive symptoms in 21.73% of the Dalmatian KTRs. BDI-II score was reciprocally associated with fat mass, trunk visceral fat, anthropometric parameters of obesity, triglyceride levels and olive oil consumption. Inverse associations were found between BDI-II score and skeletal muscle mass, handgrip strength, MCV, hemoglobin levels and consumption of fish and white meat, as suggested by the MeDi. Our results showed the interconnections between nutritional status, dietary habits and depression in Dalmatian KTRs.

Introduction

Although researchers have done intensive research on depression, its pathogenesis is still not fully explained. More and more evidence suggests that gut microbiota is closely related to the onset of depression; but its specific functional ways are not clearly identified.

Objectives

The purpose of our work was to find out how the gut microbiota was involved in the onset of depression, and to identify the potential ways to link the gut and brain in mice with depressive-like behaviors (DLB).

Methods

We used the chronic restraint stress (CRS)-induced depression model here. Gut microbiota compositions in fecal samples, lipid metabolism (in fecal, serum and hippocampus samples) and neurotransmitters in hippocampus samples were detected.

Results

We found that the 7 of 13 differential genera that significantly correlated with DLB belonged to phylum Firmicutes. The differential lipid metabolites in fecal samples mainly belonged to glycerophospholipids (GP) and fatty acids (FA) metabolism, and three important “metabolite type-bacterial taxa” correlated pairs were identified: “FA/GP-Firmicutes”, “FA/GP-Akkermansia”, and “FA/GP-Bifidobacterium”. The key differential lipid metabolites significantly correlated with DLB mainly belonged to FA and GP, and the DLB-related metagenomic genes were consistently enriched in GP metabolism and FA metabolism. Three significantly changed short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were significantly correlated with the majority of differential genera. Meanwhile, we found that the differential lipid metabolites in serum and hippocampus samples were mainly mapped into the GP metabolism, and there were four differential neurotransmitters from the tryptophan pathway in hippocampus samples.

Conclusion

Together, our findings could provide novel insights into the role of “microbiota-gut-brain” (MGB) axis in depression, and indicate that the gut microbiota might have a vital role in the onset of DLB by affecting the peripheral/central GP metabolism and tryptophan pathway. The “Firmicutes-SCFAs-GP metabolism-Tryptophan pathway” might be a possible way to link the gut and brain in depressed mice.
