Abstract
In the wake of the murder of George Floyd and the massacre in Buffalo, the editorial boards of the prominent scientific publication companies formally apologized for their journals' historical role in advancing race science and promised to improve their standards. However, flowery commentaries cannot undo the consistent pattern of endorsing biologic differences between ethnic groups, even when discussing diseases or traits that are not considered politically charged. In this report, an exemplar is made of a recent publication claiming to identify phenotypes of atopic dermatitis that are distinct between European Americans, Asians, and African Americans. The insufficiency of the evidence and logic underlying these claims are discussed. Although devoid of malice, numerous publications continue to demonstrate how claims of biological differences between races is mainstreamed in modern scientific publications. Overall, the goal of this work is to challenge the scientific community, particularly the publication companies, to evaluate how assumptions of innate biologic disadvantage have clouded assessments of racial disparities in disease beyond the topics that are more stereotypical of race science.

Abstract
This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to consolidate evidence on dietary interventions for atopic eczema/dermatitis (AD) skin symptoms in children without food allergies, following PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Systematic review updates were conducted in May 2022 and June 2023, focusing on randomized placebo-controlled trials (RCTs) involving children with AD but without food allergies. Specific diets or supplements, such as vitamins, minerals, probiotics, prebiotics, symbiotics, or postbiotics, were explored in these trials. Exclusions comprised descriptive studies, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, letters, case reports, studies involving elimination diets, and those reporting on food allergens in children and adolescents. Additionally, studies assessing exacerbation of AD due to food allergy/sensitization and those evaluating elimination diets' effects on AD were excluded. Nutritional supplementation studies were eligible regardless of sensitization profile. Evaluation of their impact on AD clinical expression was performed using SCORAD scores, and a meta-analysis of SCORAD outcomes was conducted using random-effect models (CRD42022328702). The review encompassed 27 RCTs examining prebiotics, Vitamin D, evening primrose oil, and substituting cow's milk formula with partially hydrolyzed whey milk formula. A meta-analysis of 20 RCTs assessing probiotics, alone or combined with prebiotics, revealed a significant reduction in SCORAD scores, suggesting a consistent trend in alleviating AD symptoms in children without food allergies. Nonetheless, evidence for other dietary interventions remains limited, underscoring the necessity for well-designed intervention studies targeting multiple factors to understand etiological interactions and propose reliable manipulation strategies.

Abstract
Previous studies have revealed an association between dietary factors and atopic dermatitis (AD). To explore whether there was a causal relationship between diet and AD, we performed Mendelian randomisation (MR) analysis. The dataset of twenty-one dietary factors was obtained from UK Biobank. The dataset for AD was obtained from the publicly available FinnGen consortium. The main research method was the inverse-variance weighting method, which was supplemented by MR‒Egger, weighted median and weighted mode. In addition, sensitivity analysis was performed to ensure the accuracy of the results. The study revealed that beef intake (OR = 0·351; 95 % CI 0·145, 0·847; P = 0·020) and white bread intake (OR = 0·141; 95 % CI 0·030, 0·656; P = 0·012) may be protective factors against AD. There were no causal relationships between AD and any other dietary intake factors. Sensitivity analysis showed that our results were reliable, and no heterogeneity or pleiotropy was found. Therefore, we believe that beef intake may be associated with a reduced risk of AD. Although white bread was significant in the IVW analysis, there was large uncertainty in the results given the wide 95 % CI. Other factors were not associated with AD in this study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder. Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS) is a widely used stool scoring method that could indirectly reflect intestinal function. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the associations of AD with BSFS. METHODS This was a population-based cross-sectional study of freshmen in five universities of China. AD diagnosis was performed by dermatologists according to the guideline from the American Academy of Dermatology. BSFS and covariates were collected through an online questionnaire survey. Chronic itch scores were assessed by the numeric rating scales and grouped into quartiles (Q). Mixed logistic regression models were used. Subgroup analysis was conducted by covariates. P value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS The prevalence of hard stools and loose stools were 8.9% and 7.6%, respectively (20,049 participants). After adjusting covariates, AD was significantly associated with hard stools (OR = 1.38, P < 0.001) and loose stools (OR = 1.24, P = 0.037). In subgroup analysis of hard stool, a stronger effect was observed in intake of milk (> 3 days/week), yogurt (> 3 days/week), pork (< 1 day/week), and higher itch scores (Q4). CONCLUSION This study found the relationship between AD and abnormal stool forms, and the association with hard stools might be modified by dietary factor.

Abstract
The association of various air pollutants exposure during adolescence with blood pressure (BP) in young adulthood is uncertain. We intended to evaluate the long-term association of individual and joint air pollutants exposure during adolescence with BP in young adulthood. This cross-sectional study of incoming students was conducted in five geographically disperse universities in China during September and October 2018. Mean concentrations of particulate matter with diameters ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5 ), ≤10 μm (PM10 ), nitrogen dioxides (NO2 ), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2 ), and ozone (O3 ) at participants' residential addresses during 2013-2018 were collected from the Chinese Air Quality Reanalysis dataset. Generalized linear mixed models (GLM) and quantile g-computation (QgC) models were utilized to estimate the association between individual and joint air pollutants exposure and systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and pulse pressure (PP). A total of 16,242 participants were included in the analysis. The GLM analyses showed that PM2.5 , PM10 , NO2 , CO, and SO2 were significantly positively associated with SBP and PP, while O3 was positively associated with DBP. The QgC analyses indicated that long-term exposure to a mixture of the six air pollutants had a significant positive joint association with SBP and PP. In conclusion, air pollutant co-exposure during adolescence may influence BP in young adulthood. The findings of this study emphasized the impacts of multiple air pollutants interactions on potential health and the need of minimizing pollution exposures in the environment.

Abstract
Atopic Dermatitis (AD) skin is susceptible to Staphylococcus aureus (SA) infection, potentially exposing it to a plethora of toxins and virulent determinants, including Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) (α-hemolysin (Hla) and phenol-soluble modulins (PSMs)), and superantigens. Depending on the degree of infection (superficial or invasive), clinical treatments may encompass permanganate (aq) and bleach solutions coupled with intravenous/oral antibiotics such as amoxicillin, vancomycin, doxycycline, clindamycin, daptomycin, telavancin, linezolid, or tigecycline. However, when the skin is significantly traumatized (sheathing of epidermal sections), an SA infection can rapidly ensue, impairing the immune system, and inducing local and systemic AD presentations in susceptible areas. Furthermore, when AD presents systemically, desensitization can be long (years) and intertwined with periods of relapse. In such circumstances, the identification of triggers (stress or infection) and severity of the flare need careful monitoring (preferably in real-time) so that tailored treatments targeting the underlying pathological mechanisms (SA toxins, elevated immunoglobulins, impaired healing) can be modified, permitting rapid resolution of symptoms.

The impact of artificial light at night (ALAN) exposure on health has become increasingly prominent. However, little is known about the effect of ALAN exposure on atopic diseases. In this study, a cross-sectional analysis of incoming students was conducted in 5 geographically disperse universities which locate in Changsha (south), Wuhan (central), Xiamen (east), Urumchi (west), and Hohhot (north), respectively. All incoming students who consented to participate were recruited, followed by a health examination and a questionnaire survey. Prevalent atopic diseases were diagnosed by clinicians. Mean ALAN (nanoWatts/cm2/sr) during their adolescence was obtained from the remote sensing observed nighttime light data matching with their residence information, which was obtained from survey. Mixed generalized linear models (log-binomial) were used to estimate the associations, in terms of prevalence ratio (PR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). A total of 20106 participants were included in the analysis. Based on previous work, we chose factors including socioeconomic status, behavioural factors, major air pollutants, and air climatic parameters for adjustment. After full adjustment, the PR for atopic diseases was 1.35 (95% CI: 1.27-1.42; P < 0.001). The effect size of ALAN was the largest for asthma (PR = 1.80; 95% CI: 1.48-2.19; P < 0.001), followed by atopic rhinitis (PR = 1.42; 95% CI: 1.33-1.51; P < 0.001), and atopic dermatitis (PR = 1.20; 95% CI: 1.06-1.35; P = 0.003). Subgroup analyses by covariates showed consistent results. This study revealed that exposure to ALAN during adolescence may contribute to a higher risk of atopic diseases in young adulthood.
