Abstract
BACKGROUND Globally, obesity trends are a serious public health concern. Adolescent obesity is associated with cardiometabolic risk and metabolic disorders in adolescence and may persist into adulthood. The current study was designed to explore the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) in adolescents and its relationship with obesity, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome (MetS), and some inflammatory biomarkers. METHODS A total of 90 adolescents with obesity and 90 adolescents with normal weight, participated in the study. Data from a validated 168-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire were used to calculate the DASH score. The association of DASH score with cardiometabolic risk factors was estimated using multivariable logistic regression models. To assess the correlation between the DASH score and dietary factor, the Pearson correlation coefficient (r) was used. RESULTS Adolescents with a high DASH score had significantly higher intakes of potassium, magnesium, vitamin C, and vitamin K and lower intakes of sodium compared with those with a low DASH score (P < 0.05 ). There were no significant differences in the DASH score and its components between adolescents with and without metabolic syndrome. Adolescents with metabolic syndrome had significantly higher concentrations of triglycerides, low HDL-C, and high blood pressure compared with those without metabolic syndrome (P < 0.05). There were no significant associations between DASH score and MetS and other cardiometabolic risk factors in crude and multivariate-adjusted models. In addition, the DASH score was positively associated with potassium, magnesium, sodium, vitamins D and C, docosahexaenoic acid, and soluble fiber (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION In the current study, there was no significant association between adherence to the DASH diet and odds of metabolic syndrome, and other cardiometabolic risk factors in adolescent. Further prospective studies are needed to confirm these findings. TRIAL REGISTRATION Ethics approval was obtained from the research ethics committee of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences (IR.TBZMED.REC.1397.179.).

Abstract
To assess the associations between serum and dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), as well as the inflammatory potential of diet measured by the Children's Dietary Inflammatory Index (C-DIITM), and recurrent respiratory infections (RRIs) in children. We enrolled 44 children aged 3-16 years with RRIs and 44 healthy controls. Dietary intake was assessed using a 7-day food record from which PUFA intake and C-DIITM were calculated. Serum PUFA levels were determined using gas-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The dietary assessment showed a significantly lower fiber intake in children with RRIs. The RRI group had a higher inflammatory potential in the diet than healthy controls. Children with RRIs have higher serum levels of linoleic, arachidonic, and eicosapentaenoic acids than healthy subjects. A pro-inflammatory diet was positively associated with serum n-6 PUFA levels in both the groups. A high inflammatory potential of diet, body mass index over 75 percentile, and short breastfeeding duration were identified as risk factors for RRIs. The inflammatory potential of diet is strongly associated with RRIs in children and related to their PUFA status. Promoting breastfeeding and healthy dietary habits during childhood are crucial for implementing effective preventive management strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Prediabetes is a high-risk state for diabetes. We aimed to illustrate secular trends in the Children's Dietary Inflammation Index (C-DII) among U.S. adolescents and assess its association with prediabetes. METHODS Adolescents aged 12-18 years were collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2001-2018. Prediabetes was defined based on Hemoglobin A1c, fasting glucose, and glucose tolerance levels. Risk was quantified by odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS A total of 13,684 adolescents were analyzed, representing a weighted total population of 33,351,181. C-DII scores declined significantly from 2001 to 2012 and increased from 2013 to 2018. The relationship between C-DII and prediabetes was roughly linear. When assigning the low C-DII scores as the reference, adolescents with medium and high C-DII scores were 1.22 (adjusted 95% CI: 1.04-1.44) and 1.25 (0.99-1.60) times more likely to have prediabetes. In subgroup analyses, the risk for prediabetes was significantly enhanced in boys (adjusted OR = 1.26 and 1.45 for medium and high C-DII scores, 95% CI: 1.05-1.51 and 1.09-1.92), and in adolescents living in poor families for medium (1.34 and 1.44, 1.08-1.67 and 1.07-1.95). CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicate a V-shaped secular trend in C-DII scores from 2001 to 2018 in U.S. adolescents, with the nadir in 2011-2012, and the risk for prediabetes was significantly increased by over 20% in adolescents possessing medium or high C-DII scores.

Abstract
PURPOSE One highlighted pathogenesis mechanism of diseases is the negative impact of pro-inflammatory diets (PD) on the gut microbiome. This systematic review aimed to study the link between dietary inflammatory index (DII), as an indicator of PD, and gut microbiome. METHODS A systematic search was done in PubMed and Scopus, adhering to the guidelines of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis. The assessment of the included studies' quality was performed using the critical appraisal checklist from the Joanna Briggs Institute. RESULTS Ten articles were included eight cross-sectional, one case-control, and, one cohort study. Seven and three included articles reported a weak and moderate relationship between gut microbiome and DII scores, respectively. DII scores were linked to variety in microbiome composition and diversity/richness. More importantly, anti-inflammatory diets as measured by lower DII scores were linked to a more desirable gut microbiome profile. Prevotella stercorea, Veillonella rogosae, Morganella morganii, Ruminococcus torques, Eubacterium nodatum, Alistipes intestine, Clostridium leptum, Morganellaceae family, Enterobacteriaceae family, and, Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron were related to higher DII scores. While, Butyrate-producing bacteria such as Ruminococcaceae and Lachnospiraceae families, Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, and Akkermansia muciniphila were related to lower DII scores. CONCLUSION An anti-inflammatory diet, as measured by a lower DII score, might be linked to variations in the composition and variety of the microbiome. Therefore, the DII score could be useful in microbiota research, however, this possibility needs to be investigated more precisely in future studies.

Abstract
Diet is an important source of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) exposure, and the dietary inflammatory index (DII) is a tool used to assess the inflammatory potential of an individual's diet. However, limited research has explored the association between the DII and PFAS exposure in humans. This study is the first to analyze the association between the five PFASs and DII using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2018 database. Additionally, we assessed the interaction between the DII and PFASs regarding oxidative stress and inflammatory markers, including alkaline phosphatase, albumin, neutrophil count, lymphocyte count, total bilirubin, and serum iron based on a previous study. A series of covariates were included in the analysis to reduce the confounding bias. The study included 7773 and 5933 participants based on the different models. The DII was significantly associated with serum perfluorooctanoic acid, perfluorononanoic acid, perfluorooctane sulfonic acid, and sum-PFAS. Some of the food parameters used to calculate the DII also showed associations with special PFAS serum concentrations. Specifically, dietary fiber, n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, energy intake, and vitamin D were associated with more than three PFASs. Higher DII levels in participants were linked to a more significant association between bilirubin (the interaction P-value is not significant), alkaline phosphatase, serum iron, neutrophil counts, and some PFASs. In conclusion, this study clarified the association between the three PFASs and DII, highlighting the diverse effects of PFASs on oxidative stress and inflammatory markers across different DII levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Unhealthy dietary habits and highly caloric foods induce metabolic alterations and promote the development of the inflammatory consequences of obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Describing an inflammatory effect of diet is difficult to pursue, owing lacks of standardized quali-quantitative dietary assessments. The Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) has been proposed as an estimator of the pro- or anti-inflammatory effect of nutrients and higher DII values, which indicate an increased intake of nutrients with pro-inflammatory effects, relate to an increased risk of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases and we here assessed whether they reflect biologically relevant plasmatic variations of inflammatory proteins. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, seven days dietary records from 663 subjects in primary prevention for cardiovascular diseases were analyzed to derive the intake of nutrients, foods and to calculate DII. To associate DII with the Normalized Protein eXpression (NPX), an index of abundance, of a targeted panel of 368 inflammatory biomarkers (Olink™) measured in the plasma, we divided the population by the median value of DII (1.60 (0.83-2.30)). RESULTS 332 subjects with estimated DII over the median value reported a higher intake of saturated fats but lower intakes of poly-unsaturated fats, including omega-3 and omega-6 fats, versus subjects with estimated dietary DII below the median value (N = 331). The NPX of 61 proteins was increased in the plasma of subjects with DII > median vs. subjects with DII < median. By contrast, in the latter group, we underscored only 3 proteins with increased NPX. Only 23, out of these 64 proteins, accurately identified subjects with DII > median (Area Under the Curve = 0.601 (0.519-0.668), p = 0.035). CONCLUSION This large-scale proteomic study supports that higher DII reflects changes in the plasmatic abundance of inflammatory proteins. Larger studies are warranted to validate.

Abstract
Phthalates and their alternatives are considered significant environmental risk factors that potentially influence inflammation and oxidative stress. However, their impact on biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress was inconsistent. This study aimed to explore the associations between phthalates and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), and white blood cell (WBC) counts, employing both univariate exposure and multivariate co-exposure models. For this analysis, a total of 1619 individuals aged 18 years and above, sourced from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 2017 and 2018, were selected as subjects. We explored the associations between hsCRP, GGT, and WBC counts and eighteen different phthalate metabolites. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed significant associations between both MCNP and MEHP and hsCRP. We observed negative correlations of MCOP, MCPP, MHBP, and MONP with GGT. Conversely, MEHHP and MEHHTP exhibited positive correlations with GGT. Furthermore, MECPTP and MEHHTP showed positive correlations with WBC. Notably, we identified a non-linear relationship between phthalates and inflammation and oxidative stress markers. The Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) analysis demonstrated a negative joint effect of the phthalates mixture on GGT, particularly at lower concentrations. The BKMR model also found that MEOHP and MHiBP were negatively associated with GGT. In contrast, MEHHP showed a significant positive association with GGT. Moderating effect analysis suggested that dietary inflammatory index (DII), income-to-poverty ratio (PIR), age, BMI, and physical activity influenced the association between phthalates and inflammation and oxidative stress. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the relationships between phthalates and inflammation and oxidative stress.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hyperlipidemia is closely associated with dietary patterns and inflammation. However, the relationship between hyperlipidemia and the inflammatory potential of diets remains unexplored. The research was conducted to examine the relationship between hyperlipidemia and dietary inflammatory index (DII). METHODS The data utilized in the research were acquired from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2005 to 2018. The information on dietary intake was gathered by conducting 24-h dietary recall interviews. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) and Survey-weighted logistic regression were utilized to determine the association between DII and hyperlipidemia. Furthermore, stratification analysis was carried out. RESULTS This study included 8982 individuals with and 3458 without hyperlipidemia. Participants with hyperlipidemia exhibited higher DII scores than those without hyperlipidemia. Following adjustment for gender, age, race, education level, marital status, poverty, drinking status, diabetes, hypertension, smoking status, body mass index (BMI), chronic kidney disease (CKD), cardiovascular disease (CVD), and hemoglobin (Hb), the association between the prevalence of hyperlipidemia and DII remained significant. The RCS data demonstrated that the hyperlipidemia prevalence did not exhibit an increase until the DII score was approximately 2.78. Stratification analysis revealed that the association between DII and hyperlipidemia persisted in all subgroups. CONCLUSIONS DII was associated with hyperlipidemia, and the threshold DII score for the risk of hyperlipidemia was 2.78.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood overweight and obesity have been described by the World Health Organization as noncommunicable diseases and among the greatest public health threats since they have reached epidemic proportions. A child with obesity risks becoming an adult with obesity and developing metabolic and hemostatic disorders which are the basis for the development of coronary heart diseases. Recently, a number of clinical reports have demonstrated that both an increase in plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) and a deficiency in 25OH-vitamin D3 (VD) are associated with an increase in thrombotic episodes. METHODS PAI-1 and VD levels were measured in 259 clinically overweight and obese children aged between 2 and 18 years enrolled in the Nutritional Education Program of the Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital and Research Institute of Rome (Italy) and 80 normal-weight subjects. RESULTS We observed increased HOMA-IR, PAI-1, and other inflammation indices associated with decreased VD levels when compared to normal-weight children. CONCLUSIONS Our results demonstrated that overweight and obesity are correlated with higher levels of the inflammation index. Moreover, our patients show high PAI-1 and low VD levels, confirming the high thrombotic risk in our pediatric population.

Abstract
Objected To explore the association between Parkinson's disease (PD) and dietary inflammatory index (DII) scores in adults over 40 years old in the US. Method Data were collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted from 2003 to 2018. A total of 21,994 participants were included in the study. A weighted univariate and multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the association between the DII and PD, in which continuous variables or categorical variables grouped by tertiles was used. The relationship between DII and PD has been further investigated using propensity score matching (PSM) and a subgroup analysis stratified based on DII and PD characteristics. Moreover, restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis was conducted to examine whether there was a nonlinear association between DII and PD. Results A total of 21,994 participants were obtained for statistical analysis, made up of 263 patients with PD and 21,731 participants without PD. Univariate and multivariable logistics regression analysis showed DII to be positively associated with PD before and after matching. Subgroup analysis revealed a statistical difference in non-Hispanic whites, but RCS analysis suggested that there was no nonlinear relationship between the DII and PD. Conclusion For participants over 40 years of age, higher DII scores were positively correlated with PD. In addition, these results support the ability of diet to be used as an intervention strategy for managing PD.

Abstract
Obesity has reached epidemic proportions, and the World Health Organization defined childhood overweight and obesity as a noncommunicable disease that represents the most serious public health challenges of the twenty-first century. Oxidative stress, defined as an imbalance between oxidants and antioxidants causing an impairment of the redox signals, is linked to the development of metabolic diseases. In addition, reactive oxygen species generated during metabolic disorder could increase inflammation, causing the development of insulin resistance, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. We analyze serum levels of cysteine (Cys), cysteinyl-glycine (Cys-Gly), homocysteine (Hcy), and glutathione (GSH), and other markers of oxidative stress, such as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (T-BARS), 8-isoprostane, and protein carbonyl in our children with obesity. Total antioxidant status was also determined. We found lower GSH and Cys-Gly levels, and higher Hcy and oxidative stress markers levels. We also found a positive correlation between Body Mass Index (BMI), Cys, GSH, and Hcy levels, between insulin and Cys levels, and between BMI and the homeostasis model assessment-estimated insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) with 8-isoprostane levels. Finally, we found a correlation between age and GSH and Cys levels. The deficiency of GSH could be restored by dietary supplementation with GSH precursors, supplying an inexpensive approach to oppose oxidative stress, thus avoiding obesity complications.
