Navigating through various sources of samples crucial for biomarker investigations, the review underscores the significance of robust sample processing methods and their validation in ensuring reliable outcomes. The central theme of the review revolves around the identification and evaluation of novel protein-based biomarkers. Cutting-edge discoveries are summarised, shedding light on emerging biomarkers poised for clinical application. Nevertheless, the review candidly addresses the challenges inherent in biomarker discovery, including issues of standardisation, reproducibility, and the complex heterogeneity of BC. The future direction section envisions innovative strategies and technologies to overcome existing challenges. In conclusion, the review summarises the current state of BC biomarker research, offering insights into the intricacies of proteomic investigations. Promoting Artificial Intelligence for Global Breast Cancer Risk Prediction and Screening in Adult Women: A Scoping Review

Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms can be applied in breast cancer risk prediction and prevention by using patient history, scans, imaging information, and analysis of specific genes for cancer classification to reduce overdiagnosis and overtreatment. This scoping review aimed to identify the barriers encountered in applying innovative AI techniques and models in developing breast cancer risk prediction scores and promoting screening behaviors among adult females. Findings may inform and guide future global recommendations for AI application in breast cancer prevention and care for female populations. Methods: The PRISMA-SCR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews) was used as a reference checklist throughout this study. The Arksey and O'Malley methodology was used as a framework to guide this review. The framework methodology consisted of five steps: (1) Identify research questions; (2) Search for relevant studies; (3) Selection of studies relevant to the research questions; (4) Chart the data; (5) Collate, summarize, and report the results. Results: In the field of breast cancer risk detection and prevention, the following AI techniques and models have been applied: Machine and Deep Learning Model (ML-DL model) (n = 1), Academic Algorithms (n = 2), Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium (BCSC), Clinical 5-Year Risk Prediction Model (n = 2), deep-learning computer vision AI algorithms (n = 2), AI-based thermal imaging solution (Thermalytix) (n = 1), RealRisks (n = 2), Breast Cancer Risk NAVIgation (n = 1), MammoRisk (ML-Based Tool) (n = 1), Various MLModels (n = 1), and various machine/deep learning, decision aids, and commercial algorithms (n = 7). In the 11 included studies, a total of 39 barriers to AI applications in breast cancer risk prediction and screening efforts were identified. The most common barriers in the application of innovative AI tools for breast cancer prediction and improved screening rates included lack of external validity and limited generalizability (n = 6), as AI was used in studies with either a small sample size or datasets with missing data. Many studies (n = 5) also encountered selection bias due to exclusion of certain populations based on characteristics such as race/ethnicity, family history, or past medical history. Several recommendations for future research should be considered. AI models need to include a broader spectrum and more complete predictive variables for risk assessment. Investigating long-term outcomes with improved follow-up periods is critical to assess the impacts of AI on clinical decisions beyond just the immediate outcomes. Utilizing AI to improve communication strategies at both a local and organizational level can assist in informed decision-making and compliance, especially in populations with limited literacy levels. Conclusions: The use of AI in patient education and as an adjunctive tool for providers is still early in its incorporation, and future research should explore the implementation of AI-driven resources to enhance understanding and decision-making regarding breast cancer screening, especially in vulnerable populations with limited literacy.

BUS-BRA: A breast ultrasound dataset for assessing computer-aided diagnosis systems

PURPOSE

Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems on breast ultrasound (BUS) aim to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of breast screening, helping specialists to detect and classify breast lesions. CAD system development requires a set of annotated images, including lesion segmentation, biopsy results to specify benign and malignant cases, and BI-RADS categories to indicate the likelihood of malignancy. Besides, standardized partitions of training, validation, and test sets promote reproducibility and fair comparisons between different approaches. Thus, we present a publicly available BUS dataset whose novelty is the substantial increment of cases with the above-mentioned annotations and the inclusion of standardized partitions to objectively assess and compare CAD systems.

ACQUISITION AND VALIDATION METHODS

The BUS dataset comprises 1875 anonymized images from 1064 female patients acquired via four ultrasound scanners during systematic studies at the National Institute of Cancer (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). The dataset includes biopsy-proven tumors divided into 722 benign and 342 malignant cases. Besides, a senior ultrasonographer performed a BI-RADS assessment in categories 2 to 5. Additionally, the ultrasonographer manually outlined the breast lesions to obtain ground truth segmentations. Furthermore, 5- and 10-fold cross-validation partitions are provided to standardize the training and test sets to evaluate and reproduce CAD systems. Finally, to validate the utility of the BUS dataset, an evaluation framework is implemented to assess the performance of deep neural networks for segmenting and classifying breast lesions.

DATA FORMAT AND USAGE NOTES

The BUS dataset is publicly available for academic and research purposes through an open-access repository under the name BUS-BRA: A Breast Ultrasound Dataset for Assessing CAD Systems. BUS images and reference segmentations are saved in Portable Network Graphic (PNG) format files, and the dataset information is stored in separate Comma-Separated Value (CSV) files.

POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS

The BUS-BRA dataset can be used to develop and assess artificial intelligence-based lesion detection and segmentation methods, and the classification of BUS images into pathological classes and BI-RADS categories. Other potential applications include developing image processing methods like despeckle filtering and contrast enhancement methods to improve image quality and feature engineering for image description.

Breast cancer risk prediction using machine learning: a systematic review

Background

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related fatalities among women worldwide. Conventional screening and risk prediction models primarily rely on demographic and patient clinical history to devise policies and estimate likelihood. However, recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, particularly deep learning (DL), have shown promise in the development of personalized risk models. These models leverage individual patient information obtained from medical imaging and associated reports. In this systematic review, we thoroughly investigated the existing literature on the application of DL to digital mammography, radiomics, genomics, and clinical information for breast cancer risk assessment. We critically analyzed these studies and discussed their findings, highlighting the promising prospects of DL techniques for breast cancer risk prediction. Additionally, we explored ongoing research initiatives and potential future applications of AI-driven approaches to further improve breast cancer risk prediction, thereby facilitating more effective screening and personalized risk management strategies.

Objective and methods

This study presents a comprehensive overview of imaging and non-imaging features used in breast cancer risk prediction using traditional and AI models. The features reviewed in this study included imaging, radiomics, genomics, and clinical features. Furthermore, this survey systematically presented DL methods developed for breast cancer risk prediction, aiming to be useful for both beginners and advanced-level researchers.

Results

A total of 600 articles were identified, 20 of which met the set criteria and were selected. Parallel benchmarking of DL models, along with natural language processing (NLP) applied to imaging and non-imaging features, could allow clinicians and researchers to gain greater awareness as they consider the clinical deployment or development of new models. This review provides a comprehensive guide for understanding the current status of breast cancer risk assessment using AI.

Conclusion

This study offers investigators a different perspective on the use of AI for breast cancer risk prediction, incorporating numerous imaging and non-imaging features.

Barriers and facilitators of artificial intelligence conception and implementation for breast imaging diagnosis in clinical practice: a scoping review

OBJECTIVE

Although artificial intelligence (AI) has demonstrated promise in enhancing breast cancer diagnosis, the implementation of AI algorithms in clinical practice encounters various barriers. This scoping review aims to identify these barriers and facilitators to highlight key considerations for developing and implementing AI solutions in breast cancer imaging.

METHOD

A literature search was conducted from 2012 to 2022 in six databases (PubMed, Web of Science, CINHAL, Embase, IEEE, and ArXiv). The articles were included if some barriers and/or facilitators in the conception or implementation of AI in breast clinical imaging were described. We excluded research only focusing on performance, or with data not acquired in a clinical radiology setup and not involving real patients.

RESULTS

A total of 107 articles were included. We identified six major barriers related to data (B1), black box and trust (B2), algorithms and conception (B3), evaluation and validation (B4), legal, ethical, and economic issues (B5), and education (B6), and five major facilitators covering data (F1), clinical impact (F2), algorithms and conception (F3), evaluation and validation (F4), and education (F5).

CONCLUSION

This scoping review highlighted the need to carefully design, deploy, and evaluate AI solutions in clinical practice, involving all stakeholders to yield improvement in healthcare.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT

The identification of barriers and facilitators with suggested solutions can guide and inform future research, and stakeholders to improve the design and implementation of AI for breast cancer detection in clinical practice.

A narrative review on the application of artificial intelligence in renal ultrasound

Kidney disease is a serious public health problem and various kidney diseases could progress to end-stage renal disease. The many complications of end-stage renal disease. have a significant impact on the physical and mental health of patients. Ultrasound can be the test of choice for evaluating the kidney and perirenal tissue as it is real-time, available and non-radioactive. To overcome substantial interobserver variability in renal ultrasound interpretation, artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to be a new method to help radiologists make clinical decisions. This review introduces the applications of AI in renal ultrasound, including automatic segmentation of the kidney, measurement of the renal volume, prediction of the kidney function, diagnosis of the kidney diseases. The advantages and disadvantages of the applications will also be presented clinicians to conduct research. Additionally, the challenges and future perspectives of AI are discussed.

Bone age assessment based on three-dimensional ultrasound and artificial intelligence compared with paediatrician-read radiographic bone age: protocol for a prospective, diagnostic accuracy study

INTRODUCTION

Radiographic bone age (BA) assessment is widely used to evaluate children's growth disorders and predict their future height. Moreover, children are more sensitive and vulnerable to X-ray radiation exposure than adults. The purpose of this study is to develop a new, safer, radiation-free BA assessment method for children by using three-dimensional ultrasound (3D-US) and artificial intelligence (AI), and to test the diagnostic accuracy and reliability of this method.

METHODS AND ANALYSIS

This is a prospective, observational study. All participants will be recruited through Paediatric Growth and Development Clinic. All participants will receive left hand 3D-US and X-ray examination at the Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital on the same day, all images will be recorded. These image related data will be collected and randomly divided into training set (80% of all) and test set (20% of all). The training set will be used to establish a cascade network of 3D-US skeletal image segmentation and BA prediction model to achieve end-to-end prediction of image to BA. The test set will be used to evaluate the accuracy of AI BA model of 3D-US. We have developed a new ultrasonic scanning device, which can be proposed to automatic 3D-US scanning of hands. AI algorithms, such as convolutional neural network, will be used to identify and segment the skeletal structures in the hand 3D-US images. We will achieve automatic segmentation of hand skeletal 3D-US images, establish BA prediction model of 3D-US, and test the accuracy of the prediction model.

ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION

The Ethics Committee of Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital approved this study. The approval number is 2022-019. A written informed consent will be obtained from their parent or guardian of each participant. Final results will be published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at national and international conferences.

Monitoring response to neoadjuvant therapy for breast cancer in all treatment phases using an ultrasound deep learning model

Purpose

The aim of this study was to investigate the value of a deep learning model (DLM) based on breast tumor ultrasound image segmentation in predicting pathological response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in breast cancer.

Methods

The dataset contains a total of 1393 ultrasound images of 913 patients from Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University, of which 956 ultrasound images of 856 patients were used as the training set, and 437 ultrasound images of 57 patients underwent NAC were used as the test set. A U-Net-based end-to-end DLM was developed for automatically tumor segmentation and area calculation. The predictive abilities of the DLM, manual segmentation model (MSM), and two traditional ultrasound measurement methods (longest axis model [LAM] and dual-axis model [DAM]) for pathological complete response (pCR) were compared using changes in tumor size ratios to develop receiver operating characteristic curves.

Results

The average intersection over union value of the DLM was 0.856. The early-stage ultrasound-predicted area under curve (AUC) values of pCR were not significantly different from those of the intermediate and late stages (p< 0.05). The AUCs for MSM, DLM, LAM and DAM were 0.840, 0.756, 0.778 and 0.796, respectively. There was no significant difference in AUC values of the predictive ability of the four models.

Conclusion

Ultrasonography was predictive of pCR in the early stages of NAC. DLM have a similar predictive value to conventional ultrasound for pCR, with an add benefit in effectively improving workflow.

Furthermore, the review addresses the challenges and hurdles faced in implementing AI systems in breast ultrasound diagnostics, such as data privacy, interpretability, and regulatory approval. Ethical considerations pertaining to the integration of AI into clinical practice are also discussed, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a patient-centered approach. The integration of AI into breast ultrasound holds great promise for improving diagnostic accuracy, enhancing efficiency, and ultimately advancing patient's care. By examining the current state of research and identifying future opportunities, this review aims to contribute to the understanding and utilization of AI in breast ultrasound and encourage further interdisciplinary collaboration to maximize its potential in clinical practice.

Mapping the Bibliometrics Landscape of AI in Medicine: Methodological Study

BACKGROUND

Artificial intelligence (AI), conceived in the 1950s, has permeated numerous industries, intensifying in tandem with advancements in computing power. Despite the widespread adoption of AI, its integration into medicine trails other sectors. However, medical AI research has experienced substantial growth, attracting considerable attention from researchers and practitioners.

OBJECTIVE

In the absence of an existing framework, this study aims to outline the current landscape of medical AI research and provide insights into its future developments by examining all AI-related studies within PubMed over the past 2 decades. We also propose potential data acquisition and analysis methods, developed using Python (version 3.11) and to be executed in Spyder IDE (version 5.4.3), for future analogous research.

METHODS

Our dual-pronged approach involved (1) retrieving publication metadata related to AI from PubMed (spanning 2000-2022) via Python, including titles, abstracts, authors, journals, country, and publishing years, followed by keyword frequency analysis and (2) classifying relevant topics using latent Dirichlet allocation, an unsupervised machine learning approach, and defining the research scope of AI in medicine. In the absence of a universal medical AI taxonomy, we used an AI dictionary based on the European Commission Joint Research Centre AI Watch report, which emphasizes 8 domains: reasoning, planning, learning, perception, communication, integration and interaction, service, and AI ethics and philosophy.

RESULTS

From 2000 to 2022, a comprehensive analysis of 307,701 AI-related publications from PubMed highlighted a 36-fold increase. The United States emerged as a clear frontrunner, producing 68,502 of these articles. Despite its substantial contribution in terms of volume, China lagged in terms of citation impact. Diving into specific AI domains, as the Joint Research Centre AI Watch report categorized, the learning domain emerged dominant. Our classification analysis meticulously traced the nuanced research trajectories across each domain, revealing the multifaceted and evolving nature of AI's application in the realm of medicine.

CONCLUSIONS

The research topics have evolved as the volume of AI studies increases annually. Machine learning remains central to medical AI research, with deep learning expected to maintain its fundamental role. Empowered by predictive algorithms, pattern recognition, and imaging analysis capabilities, the future of AI research in medicine is anticipated to concentrate on medical diagnosis, robotic intervention, and disease management. Our topic modeling outcomes provide a clear insight into the focus of AI research in medicine over the past decades and lay the groundwork for predicting future directions. The domains that have attracted considerable research attention, primarily the learning domain, will continue to shape the trajectory of AI in medicine. Given the observed growing interest, the domain of AI ethics and philosophy also stands out as a prospective area of increased focus.

Nanodroplet-Based Super-Resolution Ultrasound Localization Microscopy

Over the past decade, super-resolution ultrasound localization microscopy (SR-ULM) has revolutionized ultrasound imaging with its capability to resolve the microvascular structures below the ultrasound diffraction limit. The introduction of this imaging technique enables the visualization, quantification, and characterization of tissue microvasculature. The early implementations of SR-ULM utilize microbubbles (MBs) that require a long image acquisition time due to the requirement of capturing sparsely isolated microbubble signals. The next-generation SR-ULM employs nanodroplets that have the potential to significantly reduce the image acquisition time without sacrificing the resolution. This review discusses various nanodroplet-based ultrasound localization microscopy techniques and their corresponding imaging mechanisms. A summary is given on the preclinical applications of SR-ULM with nanodroplets, and the challenges in the clinical translation of nanodroplet-based SR-ULM are presented while discussing the future perspectives. In conclusion, ultrasound localization microscopy is a promising microvasculature imaging technology that can provide new diagnostic and prognostic information for a wide range of pathologies, such as cancer, heart conditions, and autoimmune diseases, and enable personalized treatment monitoring at a microlevel.

Multi-vendor robustness analysis of a commercial artificial intelligence system for breast cancer detection

Purpose

Population-based screening programs for the early detection of breast cancer have significantly reduced mortality in women, but they are resource intensive in terms of time, cost, and workload and still have limitations mainly due to the use of 2D imaging techniques, which may cause overlapping of tissues, and interobserver variability. Artificial intelligence (AI) systems may be a valuable tool to assist radiologist when reading and classifying mammograms based on the malignancy of the detected lesions. However, there are several factors that can influence the outcome of a mammogram and thus also the detection capability of an AI system. The aim of our work is to analyze the robustness of the diagnostic ability of an AI system designed for breast cancer detection.

Approach

Mammograms from a population-based screening program were scored with the AI system. The sensitivity and specificity by means of the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve were obtained as a function of the mammography unit manufacturer, demographic characteristics, and several factors that may affect the image quality (age, breast thickness and density, compression applied, beam quality, and delivered dose).

Results

The area under the curve (AUC) from the scoring ROC curve was 0.92 (95% confidence interval = 0.89 - 0.95). It showed no dependence with any of the parameters considered, as the differences in the AUC for different interval values were not statistically significant.

Conclusion

The results suggest that the AI system analyzed in our work has a robust diagnostic capability, and that its accuracy is independent of the studied parameters.

Combining Molecular and Radiomic Features for Risk Assessment in Breast Cancer

Breast cancer risk is highly variable within the population and current research is leading the shift toward personalized medicine. By accurately assessing an individual woman's risk, we can reduce the risk of over/undertreatment by preventing unnecessary procedures or by elevating screening procedures. Breast density measured from conventional mammography has been established as one of the most dominant risk factors for breast cancer; however, it is currently limited by its ability to characterize more complex breast parenchymal patterns that have been shown to provide additional information to strengthen cancer risk models. Molecular factors ranging from high penetrance, or high likelihood that a mutation will show signs and symptoms of the disease, to combinations of gene mutations with low penetrance have shown promise for augmenting risk assessment. Although imaging biomarkers and molecular biomarkers have both individually demonstrated improved performance in risk assessment, few studies have evaluated them together. This review aims to highlight the current state of the art in breast cancer risk assessment using imaging and genetic biomarkers.

Artificial intelligence in obstetric ultrasound: A scoping review

The objective is to summarize the current use of artificial intelligence (AI) in obstetric ultrasound. PubMed, Cochrane Library, and ClinicalTrials.gov databases were searched using the following keywords "neural networks", OR "artificial intelligence", OR "machine learning", OR "deep learning", AND "obstetrics", OR "obstetrical", OR "fetus", OR "foetus", OR "fetal", OR "foetal", OR "pregnancy", or "pregnant", AND "ultrasound" from inception through May 2022. The search was limited to the English language. Studies were eligible for inclusion if they described the use of AI in obstetric ultrasound. Obstetric ultrasound was defined as the process of obtaining ultrasound images of a fetus, amniotic fluid, or placenta. AI was defined as the use of neural networks, machine learning, or deep learning methods. The authors' search identified a total of 127 papers that fulfilled our inclusion criteria. The current uses of AI in obstetric ultrasound include first trimester pregnancy ultrasound, assessment of placenta, fetal biometry, fetal echocardiography, fetal neurosonography, assessment of fetal anatomy, and other uses including assessment of fetal lung maturity and screening for risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. AI holds the potential to improve the ultrasound efficiency, pregnancy outcomes in low resource settings, detection of congenital malformations and prediction of adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Invasive Lobular Carcinoma: A Review of Imaging Modalities with Special Focus on Pathology Concordance

Invasive lobular cancer (ILC) is the second most common type of breast cancer. It is characterized by a unique growth pattern making it difficult to detect on conventional breast imaging. ILC can be multicentric, multifocal, and bilateral, with a high likelihood of incomplete excision after breast-conserving surgery. We reviewed the conventional as well as newly emerging imaging modalities for detecting and determining the extent of ILC- and compared the main advantages of MRI vs. contrast-enhanced mammogram (CEM). Our review of the literature finds that MRI and CEM clearly surpass conventional breast imaging in terms of sensitivity, specificity, ipsilateral and contralateral cancer detection, concordance, and estimation of tumor size for ILC. Both MRI and CEM have each been shown to enhance surgical outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed ILC that had one of these imaging modalities added to their preoperative workup.

The Systematic Review of Artificial Intelligence Applications in Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Several studies have demonstrated the value of artificial intelligence (AI) applications in breast cancer diagnosis. The systematic review of AI applications in breast cancer diagnosis includes several studies that compare breast cancer diagnosis and AI. However, they lack systematization, and each study appears to be conducted uniquely. The purpose and contributions of this study are to offer elaborative knowledge on the applications of AI in the diagnosis of breast cancer through citation analysis in order to categorize the main area of specialization that attracts the attention of the academic community, as well as thematic issue analysis to identify the species being researched in each category. In this study, a total number of 17,900 studies addressing breast cancer and AI published between 2012 and 2022 were obtained from these databases: IEEE, Embase: Excerpta Medica Database Guide-Ovid, PubMed, Springer, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. We applied inclusion and exclusion criteria to the search; 36 studies were identified. The vast majority of AI applications used classification models for the prediction of breast cancer. Howbeit, accuracy (99%) has the highest number of performance metrics, followed by specificity (98%) and area under the curve (0.95). Additionally, the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) was the best model of choice in several studies. This study shows that the quantity and caliber of studies that use AI applications in breast cancer diagnosis will continue to rise annually. As a result, AI-based applications are viewed as a supplement to doctors' clinical reasoning, with the ultimate goal of providing quality healthcare that is both affordable and accessible to everyone worldwide.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Breast Imaging: A Scientometric Umbrella Review

Artificial intelligence (AI), a rousing advancement disrupting a wide spectrum of applications with remarkable betterment, has continued to gain momentum over the past decades. Within breast imaging, AI, especially machine learning and deep learning, honed with unlimited cross-data/case referencing, has found great utility encompassing four facets: screening and detection, diagnosis, disease monitoring, and data management as a whole. Over the years, breast cancer has been the apex of the cancer cumulative risk ranking for women across the six continents, existing in variegated forms and offering a complicated context in medical decisions. Realizing the ever-increasing demand for quality healthcare, contemporary AI has been envisioned to make great strides in clinical data management and perception, with the capability to detect indeterminate significance, predict prognostication, and correlate available data into a meaningful clinical endpoint. Here, the authors captured the review works over the past decades, focusing on AI in breast imaging, and systematized the included works into one usable document, which is termed an umbrella review. The present study aims to provide a panoramic view of how AI is poised to enhance breast imaging procedures. Evidence-based scientometric analysis was performed in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guideline, resulting in 71 included review works. This study aims to synthesize, collate, and correlate the included review works, thereby identifying the patterns, trends, quality, and types of the included works, captured by the structured search strategy. The present study is intended to serve as a "one-stop center" synthesis and provide a holistic bird's eye view to readers, ranging from newcomers to existing researchers and relevant stakeholders, on the topic of interest.

Fully automatic tumor segmentation of breast ultrasound images with deep learning

BACKGROUND

Breast ultrasound (BUS) imaging is one of the most prevalent approaches for the detection of breast cancers. Tumor segmentation of BUS images can facilitate doctors in localizing tumors and is a necessary step for computer-aided diagnosis systems. While the majority of clinical BUS scans are normal ones without tumors, segmentation approaches such as U-Net often predict mass regions for these images. Such false-positive problem becomes serious if a fully automatic artificial intelligence system is used for routine screening.

METHODS

In this study, we proposed a novel model which is more suitable for routine BUS screening. The model contains a classification branch that determines whether the image is normal or with tumors, and a segmentation branch that outlines tumors. Two branches share the same encoder network. We also built a new dataset that contains 1600 BUS images from 625 patients for training and a testing dataset with 130 images from 120 patients for testing. The dataset is the largest one with pixel-wise masks manually segmented by experienced radiologists. Our code is available at https://github.com/szhangNJU/BUS_segmentation.

RESULTS

The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) for classifying images into normal/abnormal categories was 0.991. The dice similarity coefficient (DSC) for segmentation of mass regions was 0.898, better than the state-of-the-art models. Testing on an external dataset gave a similar performance, demonstrating a good transferability of our model. Moreover, we simulated the use of the model in actual clinic practice by processing videos recorded during BUS scans; the model gave very low false-positive predictions on normal images without sacrificing sensitivities for images with tumors.

CONCLUSIONS

Our model achieved better segmentation performance than the state-of-the-art models and showed a good transferability on an external test set. The proposed deep learning architecture holds potential for use in fully automatic BUS health screening.

Improving breast cancer diagnosis by incorporating raw ultrasound parameters into machine learning

The improved diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound breast examinations remains an important goal. In this study, we propose a biophysical feature-based machine learning method for breast cancer detection to improve the performance beyond a benchmark deep learning algorithm and to furthermore provide a color overlay visual map of the probability of malignancy within a lesion. This overall framework is termed disease-specific imaging. Previously, 150 breast lesions were segmented and classified utilizing a modified fully convolutional network and a modified GoogLeNet, respectively. In this study multiparametric analysis was performed within the contoured lesions. Features were extracted from ultrasound radiofrequency, envelope, and log-compressed data based on biophysical and morphological models. The support vector machine with a Gaussian kernel constructed a nonlinear hyperplane, and we calculated the distance between the hyperplane and each feature's data point in multiparametric space. The distance can quantitatively assess a lesion and suggest the probability of malignancy that is color-coded and overlaid onto B-mode images. Training and evaluation were performed on in vivo patient data. The overall accuracy for the most common types and sizes of breast lesions in our study exceeded 98.0% for classification and 0.98 for an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, which is more precise than the performance of radiologists and a deep learning system. Further, the correlation between the probability and Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System enables a quantitative guideline to predict breast cancer. Therefore, we anticipate that the proposed framework can help radiologists achieve more accurate and convenient breast cancer classification and detection.

Artificial Intelligence in Breast Cancer Screening and Diagnosis

Cancer is a disease that continues to plague our modern society. Among all types of cancer, breast cancer is now the most common type of cancer occurring in women worldwide. Various factors, including genetics, lifestyle, and the environment, have contributed to the rise in the prevalence of breast cancer among women of all socioeconomic strata. Therefore, proper screening for early diagnosis and treatment becomes a major factor when fighting the disease. Artificial intelligence (AI) continues to revolutionize various spheres of our lives with its numerous applications. Using AI in the existing screening process makes obtaining results even easier and more convenient. Faster, more accurate results are some of the benefits of AI methods in breast cancer screening. Nonetheless, there are many challenges in the process of the integration of AI that needs to be addressed systematically. The following is a review of the application of AI in breast cancer screening.

Evolution of research trends in artificial intelligence for breast cancer diagnosis and prognosis over the past two decades: A bibliometric analysis

Objective

In recent years, among the available tools, the concurrent application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has improved the diagnostic performance of breast cancer screening. In this context, the present study intends to provide a comprehensive overview of the evolution of AI for breast cancer diagnosis and prognosis research using bibliometric analysis.

Methodology

Therefore, in the present study, relevant peer-reviewed research articles published from 2000 to 2021 were downloaded from the Scopus and Web of Science (WOS) databases and later quantitatively analyzed and visualized using Bibliometrix (R package). Finally, open challenges areas were identified for future research work.

Results

The present study revealed that the number of literature studies published in AI for breast cancer detection and survival prediction has increased from 12 to 546 between the years 2000 to 2021. The United States of America (USA), the Republic of China, and India are the most productive publication-wise in this field. Furthermore, the USA leads in terms of the total citations; however, hungry and Holland take the lead positions in average citations per year. Wang J is the most productive author, and Zhan J is the most relevant author in this field. Stanford University in the USA is the most relevant affiliation by the number of published articles. The top 10 most relevant sources are Q1 journals with PLOS ONE and computer in Biology and Medicine are the leading journals in this field. The most trending topics related to our study, transfer learning and deep learning, were identified.

Conclusion

The present findings provide insight and research directions for policymakers and academic researchers for future collaboration and research in AI for breast cancer patients.

Research progress and hotspot of the artificial intelligence application in the ultrasound during 2011-2021: A bibliometric analysis

Ultrasound, as a common clinical examination tool, inevitably has human errors due to the limitations of manual operation. Artificial intelligence is an advanced computer program that can solve this problem. Therefore, the relevant literature on the application of artificial intelligence in the ultrasonic field from 2011 to 2021 was screened by authors from the Web of Science Core Collection, which aims to summarize the trend of artificial intelligence application in the field of ultrasound, meanwhile, visualize and predict research hotspots. A total of 908 publications were included in the study. Overall, the number of global publications is on the rise, and studies on the application of artificial intelligence in the field of ultrasound continue to increase. China has made the largest contribution in this field. In terms of institutions, Fudan University has the most number of publications. Recently, IEEE Access is the most published journal. Suri J. S. published most of the articles and had the highest number of citations in this field (29 articles). It's worth noting that, convolutional neural networks (CNN), as a kind of deep learning algorithm, was considered to bring better image analysis and processing ability in recent most-cited articles. According to the analysis of keywords, the latest keyword is "COVID-19" (2020.8). The co-occurrence analysis of keywords by VOSviewer visually presented four clusters which consisted of "deep learning," "machine learning," "application in the field of visceral organs," and "application in the field of cardiovascular". The latest hot words of these clusters were "COVID-19; neural-network; hepatocellular carcinoma; atherosclerotic plaques". This study reveals the importance of multi-institutional and multi-field collaboration in promoting research progress.

Artificial Intelligence in Breast Ultrasound: The Emerging Future of Modern Medicine

In today's world, progressively enormous popularity prevails around artificial intelligence (AI). AI is gaining popularity in the identification of various images. Therefore, it has been widely used in the ultrasound of the breast. Furthermore, AI can perform a quantitative evaluation, which further helps maintain the diagnosis's accuracy. Moreover, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, posing a severe threat to women's health. Hence, its early detection is usually associated with a patient's prognosis. As a result, using AI in breast cancer screening and detection is highly crucial. The concept of AI in the perspective of breast ultrasound has been highlighted in this brief review article. It tends to focus on early AI, i.e., traditional machine learning and deep learning algorithms. Also, the use of AI in ultrasound and the use of it in mammography, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine imaging, and classification of breast lesions is broadly explained, along with the challenges faced in bringing AI into daily practice.

Artificial Intelligence in Prenatal Ultrasound Diagnosis

The application of artificial intelligence (AI) technology to medical imaging has resulted in great breakthroughs. Given the unique position of ultrasound (US) in prenatal screening, the research on AI in prenatal US has practical significance with its application to prenatal US diagnosis improving work efficiency, providing quantitative assessments, standardizing measurements, improving diagnostic accuracy, and automating image quality control. This review provides an overview of recent studies that have applied AI technology to prenatal US diagnosis and explains the challenges encountered in these applications.

Detection and Classification of Knee Injuries from MR Images Using the MRNet Dataset with Progressively Operating Deep Learning Methods

This study aimed to build progressively operating deep learning models that could detect meniscus injuries, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears and knee abnormalities in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The Stanford Machine Learning Group MRNet dataset was employed in the study, which included MRI image indexes in the coronal, sagittal, and axial axes, each having 1130 trains and 120 validation items. The study is divided into three sections. In the first section, suitable images are selected to determine the disease in the image index based on the disturbance under examination. It is also used to identify images that have been misclassified or are noisy and/or damaged to the degree that they cannot be utilised for diagnosis in the first section. The study employed the 50-layer residual networks (ResNet50) model in this section. The second part of the study involves locating the region to be focused on based on the disturbance that is targeted to be diagnosed in the image under examination. A novel model was built by integrating the convolutional neural networks (CNN) and the denoising autoencoder models in the second section. The third section is dedicated to making a diagnosis of the disease. In this section, a novel ResNet50 model is trained to identify disease diagnoses or abnormalities, independent of the ResNet50 model used in the first section. The images that each model selects as output after training are referred to as progressively operating deep learning methods since they are supplied as an input to the following model.
