Advancements in reliability of mechanical performance of 3D PRINTED Ag-doped bioceramic antibacterial scaffolds for bone tissue engineering

The current gold-standard approach for addressing bone defects in load-bearing applications sees the use of either autographs or allographs. These solutions, however, have limitations as autographs and allographs carry the risk of additional trauma, the threat of disease transmission, and potential donor rejection. An attractive candidate for overcoming the challenges associated with the use of autographs and allographs is a 3D porous scaffold displaying the needed mechanical competency for use in load-bearing applications that can stimulate bone tissue regeneration and provide antibacterial capabilities. To date, no reports document a 3D porous scaffold that fully meets the criteria specified above. In this work, we show how the use of fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D printing technology in combination with a bimodal distribution of Ag-doped bioactive glass-ceramic (Ag-BG) micro-sized particles can successfully deliver porous 3D scaffolds with attractive and reliable mechanical performance characteristics capable of stimulating bone tissue regeneration and the ability to provide inherent antibacterial properties. To characterize the reliability of the mechanical performance of the FFF-printed Ag-BG scaffolds, Weibull statistics were evaluated for both the compressive (N = 25; m = 13.6 ± 0.9) and flexural (N = 25; m = 7.3 ± 0.7) strengths. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was used both in planktonic and biofilm forms to highlight the advanced antibacterial characteristics of the FFF-printed Ag-BG scaffolds. Biological performance was evaluated in vitro through indirect exposure to human marrow stromal cells (hMSCs), where the FFF-printed Ag-BG scaffolds were found to provide an attractive environment for cell infiltration and mineralization. Our work demonstrates how fused filament fabrication technology can be used with bioactive and antibacterial materials such as Ag-BG to deliver mechanically competent porous 3D scaffolds capable of stimulating bone tissue regeneration while simultaneously providing antibacterial performance capabilities.

The effect of quaternary ammonium polyethylenimine nanoparticles on bacterial adherence, cytotoxicity, and physical and mechanical properties of experimental dental composites

A significant problem related to the functioning of resin-based composites for dental fillings is secondary or recurrent caries, which is the reason for the need for repeated treatment. The cross-linked quaternary ammonium polyethylenimine nanoparticles (QA-PEI-NPs) have been shown to be a promising antibacterial agent against different bacteria, including cariogenic ones. However, little is known about the properties of dental dimethacrylate polymer-based composites enriched with QA-PEI-NPs. This research was carried out on experimental composites based on bis-GMA/UDMA/TEGDMA matrix enriched with 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2 and 3 (wt%) QA-PEI-NPs and reinforced with two glass fillers. The cured composites were tested for their adherence of Streptococcus Mutans bacteria, cell viability (MTT assay) with 48 h and 10-days extracts , degree of conversion (DC), water sorption (WSO), and solubility (WSL), water contact angle (CA), flexural modulus (E), flexural strength (FS), compressive strength (CS), and Vickers microhardness (HV). The investigated materials have shown a complete reduction in bacteria adherence and satisfactory biocompatibility. The QA-PEI-NPs additive has no effect on the DC, VH, and E values. QA-PEI-NPs increased the CA (a favorable change), the WSO and WSL (unfavorable changes) and decreased flexural strength, and compressive strength (unfavorable changes). The changes mentioned were insignificant and acceptable for most composites, excluding the highest antibacterial filler content. Probably the reason for the deterioration of some properties was low compatibility between filler particles and the matrix; therefore, it is worth extending the research by surface modification of QA-PEI-NPs to achieve the optimum performance characteristics.

Multifunctional dental resin composite with antibacterial and remineralization properties containing nMgO-BAG

The inherent characteristics of resin composite can lead to micro-leakage after polymerization shrinkage. The bacteria invasion through edge micro-leakage and attachment onto the material surface can cause secondary caries, reducing the service life of resin composites. In this study, magnesium oxide nanoparticles (nMgO) as an inorganic antimicrobial agent and bioactive glass (BAG) as a remineralization agent were simultaneously incorporated into the resin composite. With the addition of both nMgO and BAG, the resin composite showed an excellent antimicrobial effect compared to the resin composite with nMgO or BAG only. The remineralization capacity of demineralized dentin increased with the increasing content of BAG. Vickers hardness, compressive strength, and flexural strength of the resin composite with nMgO-BAG were not significantly affected compared to the ones with the same total filler amount but with BAG only. The depth of cure and water sorption values of the resin composite showed an increasing trend with the increasing total amount of nMgO and BAG fillers. This developed multifunctional resin composite is expected to reduce bacterial invasion and promote remineralization of early caries damage.

Antimicrobial Properties of Plant Fibers

Healthcare-associated infections (HAI), or nosocomial infections, are a global health and economic problem in developed and developing countries, particularly for immunocompromised patients in their intensive care units (ICUs) and surgical site hospital areas. Recurrent pathogens in HAIs prevail over antibiotic-resistant bacteria, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. For this reason, natural antibacterial mechanisms are a viable alternative for HAI treatment. Natural fibers can inhibit bacterial growth, which can be considered a great advantage in these applications. Moreover, these fibers have been reported to be biocompatible and biodegradable, essential features for biomedical materials to avoid complications due to infections and significant immune responses. Consequently, tissue engineering, medical textiles, orthopedics, and dental implants, as well as cosmetics, are fields currently expanding the use of plant fibers. In this review, we will discuss the source of natural fibers with antimicrobial properties, antimicrobial mechanisms, and their biomedical applications.

Current Strategies to Control Recurrent and Residual Caries with Resin Composite Restorations: Operator- and Material-Related Factors

This review addresses the rationale of recurrent and/or residual caries associated with resin composite restorations alongside current strategies and evidence-based recommendations to arrest residual caries and restrain recurrent caries. The PubMed and MEDLINE databases were searched for composite-associated recurrent/residual caries focusing on predisposing factors related to materials and operator’s skills; patient-related factors were out of scope. Recurrent caries and fractures are the main reasons for the failure of resin composites. Recurrent and residual caries are evaluated differently with no exact distinguishment, especially for wall lesions. Recurrent caries correlates to patient factors, the operator’s skills of cavity preparation, and material selection and insertion. Material-related factors are significant. Strong evidence validates the minimally invasive management of deep caries, with concerns regarding residual infected dentin. Promising technologies promote resin composites with antibacterial and remineralizing potentials. Insertion techniques influence adaptation, marginal seal, and proximal contact tightness. A reliable diagnostic method for recurrent or residual caries is urgently required. Ongoing endeavors cannot eliminate recurrent caries or precisely validate residual caries. The operator’s responsibility to precisely diagnose original caries and remaining tooth structure, consider oral environmental conditions, accurately prepare cavities, and select and apply restorative materials are integral aspects. Recurrent caries around composites requires a triad of attention where the operator’s skills are cornerstones.

A Narrative Review of Bioactive Glass-Loaded Dental Resin Composites

This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the characterizations of bioactive glass (BAG)-loaded dental resin-based composite materials. Online databases (Web of Science, PubMed, and Science Direct) were used to collect data published from January 2011 to January 2022. Only BAG-containing resin adhesive and resin restorative composites are discussed in this narrative review. BAG-loaded resin composites exhibit excellent mineralization ability reflecting enhanced ion release, pH elevation, and apatite formation, especially regarding high BAG loading. This aids the anti-demineralization and remineralization of teeth. Furthermore, BAG-loaded resin composites demonstrated in vitro biocompatibility and antibacterial performance. It has been suggested that BAG fillers with small particle sizes and no more than 20 wt% in terms of loading amount should be used to guarantee the appropriate mechanical properties of resin composites. However, most of these studies focused on one or some aspects using different resin systems, BAG types, and BAG amounts. As such, this makes the comparison difficult, and it is essential to find an optimal balance between different properties. BAG-loaded resin composites can be regarded as bioactive materials, which present major benefits in dentistry, especially their capability in the bacterial inhibition, cell biocompatibility, anti-demineralization, and remineralization of teeth.

Novel trends, challenges and new perspectives for enamel repair and regeneration to treat dental defects

Dental enamel is the hardest tissue in the human body, providing external protection for the tooth against masticatory forces, temperature changes and chemical stimuli. Once enamel is damaged/altered by genetic defects, dental caries, trauma, and/or dental wear, it cannot repair itself due to the loss of enamel producing cells following the tooth eruption. The current restorative dental materials are unable to replicate physico-mechanical, esthetic features and crystal structures of the native enamel. Thus, development of alternative approaches to repair and regenerate enamel defects is much needed but remains challenging due to the structural and functional complexities involved. This review paper summarizes the clinical aspects to be taken into consideration for the development of optimal therapeutic approaches to tackle dental enamel defects. It also provides a comprehensive overview of the emerging acellular and cellular approaches proposed for enamel remineralization and regeneration. Acellular approaches aim to artificially synthesize or re-mineralize enamel, whereas cell-based strategies aim to mimic the natural process of enamel development given that epithelial cells can be stimulated to produce enamel postnatally during the adult life. The key issues and current challenges are also discussed here, along with new perspectives for future research to advance the field of regenerative dentistry.

Sol-gel bioactive glass containing biomaterials for restorative dentistry: A review

OBJECTIVE

Bioactive glasses (BAGs) have been researched extensively for dentistry due to their favourable biocompatibility and hard tissue bonding ability. However, the specific application of BAGs produced through sol-gel synthesis in restorative dentistry has not been reviewed previously. This review provides a comprehensive account of the principles behind sol-gel derived BAGs and their investigation for dental tissue restoration materials.

METHODS

A search for in vitro and in vivo studies was performed using the databases Web of Science®, Medline®, Scopus® and Google Scholar®. Articles published over the past 20 years were selected and data on the BAG composition and morphology was extracted. Analysis of the effect of specific BAG additives on the properties of experimental dental materials was also performed.

RESULTS

A majority of BAG particles investigated were spheres ranging in size from 5 nm to ~650 µm. Sol-gel BAGs are mainly applied in the treatment of hypersensitive dentine and for pulp-dentine tissue engineering, while a handful have been used in target drug delivery. BAG fillers are promising additives that result in improved biological properties, antibacterial effects, hardness, acid buffering and remineralization. Unfortunately, some detrimental effects on optical properties have been observed with BAG addition. Additionally, in vivo data, investigations into radiopacity and standardization of test protocols are identified as areas for improvement and further studies.

SIGNIFICANCE

Future work should consider the pertinent issues raised in order to improve the quality of available data and expand knowledge in this area of dental biomaterials research and development.

Therapeutic Applications of Antimicrobial Silver-Based Biomaterials in Dentistry

Microbial infection accounts for many dental diseases and treatment failure. Therefore, the antibacterial properties of dental biomaterials are of great importance to the long-term results of treatment. Silver-based biomaterials (AgBMs) have been widely researched as antimicrobial materials with high efficiency and relatively low toxicity. AgBMs have a broad spectrum of antimicrobial properties, including penetration of microbial cell membranes, damage to genetic material, contact killing, and dysfunction of bacterial proteins and enzymes. In particular, advances in nanotechnology have improved the application value of AgBMs. Hence, in many subspecialties of dentistry, AgBMs have been researched and employed, such as caries arresting or prevention, root canal sterilization, periodontal plaque inhibition, additives in dentures, coating of implants and anti-inflammatory material in oral and maxillofacial surgery. This paper aims to provide an overview of the application approaches of AgBMs in dentistry and present better guidance for oral antimicrobial therapy via the development of AgBMs.

Demineralization prevention with a new antibacterial restorative composite containing QASi nanoparticles: an in situ study

OBJECTIVES

To investigate whether a newly developed dental composite with quaternary ammonium silica dioxide (QASi) nanoparticles incorporated with other fillers into the restorative material demonstrates antibacterial activity by reducing enamel demineralization in an in situ gap model.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Twenty subjects wearing a lower removable partial denture (RPD) with acrylic flanges on both sides of the mouth were recruited into the 4-week in situ study. The gap model consisted of an enamel slab placed next to a composite, separated by a 38-μm space. In the split-mouth design on one side of the RPD, the composite was the Nobio Infinix composite (Nobio Ltd., Kadima, Israel), and the contralateral side used a control composite. Each participant received enamel slabs from one tooth. The gap model was recessed into the RPD buccal flange, allowing microbial plaque to accumulate within the gap. After 4 weeks of continuous wearing, decalcification (∆Z mineral loss) of the enamel slabs adjacent to the gap was determined by cross-sectional microhardness testing in the laboratory.

RESULTS

The ∆Z for the antibacterial composite test side was 235±354 (mean±standard deviation [SD]; data reported from 17 participants) and statistically significantly lower compared to ∆Z of the control side (774±556; mean±SD) (paired t-test, P<0.0001; mean of test minus control -539 (SD=392), 95% confidence interval of difference: -741, -338).

CONCLUSIONS

This in situ clinical study showed that composites with QASi antibacterial particles significantly reduced demineralization in enamel adjacent to a 38-μm gap over a 4-week period in comparison to a conventional composite.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Composites with QASi nanoparticle technology have the potential to reduce the occurrence of secondary caries.

Recent Advances in the Development of Antimicrobial and Antifouling Biocompatible Materials for Dental Applications

The risk of secondary bacterial infections resulting from dental procedures has driven the design of antimicrobial and antifouling dental materials to curb pathogenic microbial growth, biofilm formation and subsequent oral and dental diseases. Studies have investigated approaches based primarily on contact-killing or release-killing materials. These materials are designed for addition into dental resins, adhesives and fillings or as immobilized coatings on tooth surfaces, titanium implants and dental prosthetics. This review discusses the recent developments in the different classes of biomaterials for antimicrobial and antifouling dental applications: polymeric drug-releasing materials, polymeric and metallic nanoparticles, polymeric biocides and antimicrobial peptides. With modifications to improve cytotoxicity and mechanical properties, contact-killing and anti-adhesion materials show potential for incorporation into dental materials for long-term clinical use as opposed to short-lived antimicrobial release-based coatings. However, extended durations of biocompatibility testing, and adjustment of essential biomaterial features to enhance material longevity in the oral cavity require further investigations to confirm suitability and safety of these materials in the clinical setting. The continuous exposure of dental restorative and regenerative materials to pathogenic microbes necessitates the implementation of antimicrobial and antifouling materials to either replace antibiotics or improve its rational use, especially in the day and age of the ever-increasing problem of antimicrobial resistance.

Bioadhesion in the oral cavity and approaches for biofilm management by surface modifications

BACKGROUND

All soft and solid surface structures in the oral cavity are covered by the acquired pellicle followed by bacterial colonization. This applies for natural structures as well as for restorative or prosthetic materials; the adherent bacterial biofilm is associated among others with the development of caries, periodontal diseases, peri-implantitis, or denture-associated stomatitis. Accordingly, there is a considerable demand for novel materials and coatings that limit and modulate bacterial attachment and/or propagation of microorganisms.

OBJECTIVES AND FINDINGS

The present paper depicts the current knowledge on the impact of different physicochemical surface characteristics on bioadsorption in the oral cavity. Furthermore, it was carved out which strategies were developed in dental research and general surface science to inhibit bacterial colonization and to delay biofilm formation by low-fouling or "easy-to-clean" surfaces. These include the modulation of physicochemical properties such as periodic topographies, roughness, surface free energy, or hardness. In recent years, a large emphasis was laid on micro- and nanostructured surfaces and on liquid repellent superhydrophic as well as superhydrophilic interfaces. Materials incorporating mobile or bound nanoparticles promoting bacteriostatic or bacteriotoxic properties were also used. Recently, chemically textured interfaces gained increasing interest and could represent promising solutions for innovative antibioadhesion interfaces. Due to the unique conditions in the oral cavity, mainly in vivo or in situ studies were considered in the review.

CONCLUSION

Despite many promising approaches for modulation of biofilm formation in the oral cavity, the ubiquitous phenomenon of bioadsorption and adhesion pellicle formation in the challenging oral milieu masks surface properties and therewith hampers low-fouling strategies.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Improved dental materials and surface coatings with easy-to-clean properties have the potential to improve oral health, but extensive and systematic research is required in this field to develop biocompatible and effective substances.

Effect of biofilm exposure on marginal integrity of composite restorations

PURPOSE

To evaluate the effect of bacterial exposure on the marginal integrity of dentin-resin interfaces for composites with and without bioactive glass (BAG).

METHODS

Cavity preparations of 5 mm width and 1.5 mm depth were machined into dentin disks by means of a computer controlled milling system. After applying the bonding agent, cavity preparations (n=3-5) were restored by incremental technique with experimental resin composites (50:50 BisGMA/TEGDMA: 72wt% filler) with different filler compositions: control - 67 wt% silanated strontium glass and 5wt% aerosol-silica filler and BAG - 57 wt% silanated strontium glass and 15 wt% BAG-65 wt% silica. Samples were then stored in sterile Todd-Hewitt media or co-incubated with Streptococcus mutans (UA 159), at 37°C, 5% CO2 for 1-2 weeks. For samples co-incubated with a living biofilm, a luciferase assay was performed in order to assess its viability. Surfaces were impressed before and after each storage condition and replicas examined in a scanning electron microscope. Using image analysis software (Image J), the discontinuous margins percentage (%DM) was quantitatively assessed. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's test (α= 0.05).

RESULTS

Gap size ranged between 7-23 µm. The bacterial exposure significantly increased the %DM in both groups predominantly due to the formation of new gap regions. There was no difference between control and BAG composites regarding %DM and the biofilm viability. Bacterial exposure promoted degradation of composite restoration marginal integrity, with no difference between composites with and without BAG.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The samples incubated with living biofilm had a higher gap percentage in the margins, confirming the negative effect of cariogenic bacteria on margin degradation. The parameters defined for such synergy can help to understand the multi-factorial aspect of marginal discontinuity and therefore, predict the behavior of composite restorations subjected to the challenging oral environment.

Synthesis of an anti-cariogenic experimental dental composite containing novel drug-decorated copper particles

Secondary caries is one of the most major cause for re-placement of dental composite restorations. Targeting the survival of cariogenic bacteria residing on the restoration surface may reduce this problem. The present study aims to evaluate the antibacterial potential as well as assess the physical and chemical properties of experimental dental composites containing novel drug-decorated copper particles (DDCP) as adjunct antibacterial filler particles. These were incorporated at concentrations of 0%, 0.5%, 0.10%, 0.20%, and 0.25% (w/w) into experimental composite consisting of methacrylate monomers and silanized silica fillers. RESULTS: Direct contact test revealed that the anti-cariogenic potential of experimental composites was more than the control groups. The cell viability assay showed no toxic effect on MC3T3-E1 cell lines in the MTT assay. The microhardness of experimental composites increased as the percentage of DDCP increased, however, the degree of cure was increased only up till the concentration of 0.20%. The release kinetics of the composites reveals that even after 28 days there was a steady and slow release of copper particles signifying the sustained anti-cariogenic effect. CONCLUSION: The experimental composites have good anti-cariogenic potential, which was sustained for one month without any deleterious effect on the physical and chemical properties of resin dental composites.

The synergistic effects of SrF2 nanoparticles, YSZ nanoparticles, and poly-ε-l-lysin on physicomechanical, ion release, and antibacterial-cellular behavior of the flowable dental composites

Resin-based pit-and-fissure sealants (flowable resin composites) were formulated using bisphenol-A-glycerolatedimethacrylate (Bis-GMA)-triethylene glycol dimethacrylate-(TEGDMA)-diurethanedimethacrylate (UDMA) mixed monomers and multiple fillers, including synthetic strontium fluoride (SrF₂) nanoparticles as a fluoride-releasing and antibacterial agent, yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) nanoparticles as an auxiliary filler, and poly-ε-l-lysin (ε-PL) as an auxiliary antibacterial agent. Based on the physical, mechanical and initial antibacterial properties, the formulated nano-sealant containing 5 wt% SrF₂, 5 wt% YSZ and 0.5 wt% ε-PL was selected as the optimal specimen and examined for ion release and cytotoxicity. The results showed an average release rate of 0.87 μg·cm^-2·day^-1 in the aqueous medium (pH 6.9) and 1.58 μg·cm^-2·day^-1 in acidic medium (pH 4.0). The maximum cytotoxicity of 20% toward human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) was observed according to the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) cytotoxicity assay and acridine orange staining test. A synergy between SrF₂ nanoparticles and ε-PL exhibited a better antibacterial activity in terms of colony reduction compared to the other samples. However, the inclusion of SrF₂ and ε-PL caused mechanically weakening of the sealants that was partly compensated by incorporation of YSZ nanoparticles (up to 10 wt%).

Bioactive Glass Applications in Dentistry

At present, researchers in the field of biomaterials are focusing on the oral hard and soft tissue engineering with bioactive ingredients by activating body immune cells or different proteins of the body. By doing this natural ground substance, tissue component and long-lasting tissues grow. One of the current biomaterials is known as bioactive glass (BAG). The bioactive properties make BAG applicable to several clinical applications involving the regeneration of hard tissues in medicine and dentistry. In dentistry, its uses include dental restorative materials, mineralizing agents, as a coating material for dental implants, pulp capping, root canal treatment, and air-abrasion, and in medicine it has its applications from orthopedics to soft-tissue restoration. This review aims to provide an overview of promising and current uses of bioactive glasses in dentistry.

Annual review of selected scientific literature: A report of the Committee on Scientific Investigation of the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry

This comprehensive review of the 2018 dental literature is provided to inform busy dentists about progress in the profession. Developed by the Committee on Scientific Investigation of the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry, each author brings discipline-specific expertise to one of the 8 sections of the report including (1) prosthodontics; (2) periodontics, alveolar bone, and peri-implant tissues; (3) implant dentistry; (4) dental materials and therapeutics; (5) occlusion and temporomandibular disorders; (6) sleep-related breathing disorders; (7) oral medicine and oral and maxillofacial surgery; and (8) dental caries and cariology. The report targets important information that will likely influence day-to-day treatment decisions. Each review is not intended to stand alone but to update interested readers so that they may visit source materials if greater detail is desired. As the profession continues its march toward evidence-based clinical decision-making, an already voluminous library of potentially valuable dental literature continues to grow. It is the intention of this review and its authors to provide assistance in navigating the extensive dental literature published in 2018. It is our hope that readers find this work useful in the clinical management of patients moving forward.

Human In Situ Study of the effect of Bis(2-Methacryloyloxyethyl) Dimethylammonium Bromide Immobilized in Dental Composite on Controlling Mature Cariogenic Biofilm

Cariogenic oral biofilms cause recurrent dental caries around composite restorations, resulting in unprosperous oral health and expensive restorative treatment. Quaternary ammonium monomers that can be copolymerized with dental resin systems have been explored for the modulation of dental plaque biofilm growth over dental composite surfaces. Here, for the first time, we investigated the effect of bis(2-methacryloyloxyethyl) dimethylammonium bromide (QADM) on human overlying mature oral biofilms grown intra-orally in human participants for 7⁻14 days. Seventeen volunteers wore palatal devices containing composite specimens containing 10% by mass of QADM or a control composite without QADM. After 7 and 14 days, the adherent biofilms were collected to determine bacterial counts via colony-forming unit (CFU) counts. Biofilm viability, chronological changes, and percentage coverage were also determined through live/dead staining. QADM composites caused a significant inhibition of Streptococcus mutans biofilm formation for up to seven days. No difference in the CFU values were found for the 14-day period. Our findings suggest that: (1) QADM composites were successful in inhibiting 1⁻3-day biofilms in the oral environment in vivo; (2) QADM significantly reduced the portion of the S. mutans group; and (3) stronger antibiofilm activity is required for the control of mature long-term cariogenic biofilms. Contact-killing strategies using dental materials aimed at preventing or at least reducing high numbers of cariogenic bacteria seem to be a promising approach in patients at high risk of the recurrence of dental caries around composites.

Properties of Experimental Dental Composites Containing Antibacterial Silver-Releasing Filler

Secondary caries is one of the important issues related to using dental composite restorations. Effective prevention of cariogenic bacteria survival may reduce this problem. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial activity and physical properties of composite materials with silver sodium hydrogen zirconium phosphate (SSHZP). The antibacterial filler was introduced at concentrations of 1%, 4%, 7%, 10%, 13%, and 16% (w/w) into model composite material consisting of methacrylate monomers and silanized glass and silica fillers. The in vitro reduction in the number of viable cariogenic bacteria Streptococcus mutans ATCC 33535 colonies, Vickers microhardness, compressive strength, diametral tensile strength, flexural strength, flexural modulus, sorption, solubility, degree of conversion, and color stability were investigated. An increase in antimicrobial filler concentration resulted in a statistically significant reduction in bacteria. There were no statistically significant differences caused by the introduction of the filler in compressive strength, diametral tensile strength, flexural modulus, and solubility. Statistically significant changes in degree of conversion, flexural strength, hardness (decrease), solubility (increase), and in color were registered. A favorable combination of antibacterial properties and other properties was achieved at SSHZP concentrations from 4% to 13%. These composites exhibited properties similar to the control material and enhanced in vitro antimicrobial efficiency.
