Abstract
Half of the world's population depends on rice plant cultivation, yet environmental stresses continue to substantially impact the production of one of our most valuable staple foods. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in the transcriptome of the IAC1131 rice genotype when exposed to a suite of multiple abiotic stresses, either with or without pre-treatment with the plant hormone ABA (Abscisic acid). Four groups of IAC1131 rice plants were grown including control plants incubated with ABA, non-ABA-incubated control plants, stressed plants incubated with ABA, and non-ABA-incubated stressed plants, with leaf samples harvested after 0 days (control) and 4 days (stressed). We found that high concentrations of ABA applied exogenously to the control plants under normal conditions did not alter the IAC1131 transcriptome profile significantly. The observed changes in the transcriptome of the IAC1131 plants in response to multiple abiotic stress were made even more pronounced by ABA pre-treatment, which induced the upregulation of a significant number of additional genes. Although ABA application impacted the plant transcriptome, multiple abiotic stress was the dominant factor in modifying gene expression in the IAC1131 plants. Exogenous ABA application may mitigate the effects of stress through ABA-dependent signalling pathways related to biological photosynthesis functions. Pre-treatment with ABA alters the photosynthesis function negatively by reducing stomatal conductance, therefore helping plants to conserve the energy required for survival under unfavourable environmental conditions.

Abstract
We used 'Shannong No.1' experimental material to simulate higher salt concentration in ginger and analyzed the physiological responses of different parts of ginger seedlings under salt stress. The results showed that salt stress led to a significant decrease in fresh and dry weight of ginger, lipid membrane peroxidation, increased sodium ion content and enhanced activity of antioxidant enzymes. Compared with the control, the overall plant dry weight of ginger under salt stress decreased by about 60%, and the MDA content in roots, stems, leaves, and rhizomes increased by 372.27%, 184.88%, 291.5%, and 171.13%, respectively, and the APX content increased by 188.85%, 165.56%, 195.38%, and 40.08%, respectively. After analysis of the physiological indicators, it was found that the roots and leaves of ginger were the most significantly changed parts. We analyzed the transcriptional differences between ginger roots and leaves by RNA-seq and found that they jointly initiated MAPK signaling pathways in response to salt stress. By combining physiological and molecular indicators, we elucidated the response of different tissues and parts of ginger to salt stress during the seedling stage.

Abstract
Crop production is the primary goal of agricultural activities, which is always taken into consideration. However, global agricultural systems are coming under increasing pressure from the rising food demand of the rapidly growing world population and changing climate. To address these issues, improving high-yield and climate-resilient related-traits in crop breeding is an effective strategy. In recent years, advances in omics techniques, including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, paved the way for accelerating plant/crop breeding to cope with the changing climate and enhance food production. Optimized omics and phenotypic plasticity platform integration, exploited by evolving machine learning algorithms will aid in the development of biological interpretations for complex crop traits. The precise and progressive assembly of desire alleles using precise genome editing approaches and enhanced breeding strategies would enable future crops to excel in combating the changing climates. Furthermore, plant breeding and genetic engineering ensures an exclusive approach to developing nutrient sufficient and climate-resilient crops, the productivity of which can sustainably and adequately meet the world's food, nutrition, and energy needs. This review provides an overview of how the integration of omics approaches could be exploited to select crop varieties with desired traits.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Soil salinization has become a global problem restricting the seed yield and quality of crops, including wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Salinity significantly alters plant morphology and severely disrupts physiological homeostasis. Salt tolerance of wheat has been widely studied whereas core ion transporters responsive to salt stress remain elusive. RESULTS In this study, the wheat seedlings were subjected to salinity toxicity for morpho-physiological and transcriptomic analysis of wheat salt tolerance. There was a inversely proportional relationship between salt concentrations and morpho-physiological parameters. Under the condition of 100 mM NaCl, the H2O2, O2-, MDA content and membrane permeability were significantly increased whereas the chlorophyll content was markedly decreased. Under salt stress, a larger proportion of Na+ was partitioned in the roots than in the shoots, which had a lower Na+/K+ ratio and proline content. Salt stress also obviously affected the homeostasis of other cations. Genome-wide transcriptomic analysis showed that a total of 2,807 and 5,570 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in the shoots and roots, respectively. Functionality analysis showed that these DEGs were mainly enriched in the KEGG pathways related to carbon metabolism, phenylalanine, and amino acid biosynthesis, and were primarily enriched in the GO terms involving proline metabolism and redox processes. The Na+ transporter genes were upregulated under salt stress, which repressed the gene expression of the K+ transporters. Salt stress also significantly elevated the expression of the genes involved in osmoregulation substances biosynthesis, and obviously affected the expression profiling of other cation transporters. Co-expression network analysis identified TaNHX6-D5/TaNHX4-B7 and TaP5CS2-B3 potentially as core members regulating wheat salt tolerance. CONCLUSIONS These results might help us fully understand the morpho-physiological and molecular responses of wheat seedlings to salt stress, and provide elite genetic resources for the genetic modification of wheat salt tolerance.

Abstract
Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) is an important food crop; however, its production is affected by salt stress. Salt stress can inhibit seed germination, promote senescence, and modify cell wall biosynthesis, assembly, and architecture. Melatonin, an indole heterocycle, has been demonstrated to greatly impact cell wall structure, composition, and regulation in plants under stress. However, the molecular basis for such assumptions is still unclear. In this study, a common bean variety, "Naihua" was treated with water (W), 70 mmol/L NaCl solution (S), and 100 μmol/L melatonin supplemented with salt solution (M+S) to determine the response of common bean to exogenous melatonin and explore regulatory mechanism of melatonin against salt stress. The results showed that exogenous melatonin treatment alleviated salt stress-induced growth inhibition of the common bean by increasing the length, surface area, volume, and diameter of common bean sprouts. Moreover, RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) and real-time quantitative PCR (qRT-PCR) indicated that the cell wall regulation pathway was involved in the salt stress tolerance of the common bean enhanced by melatonin. Screening of 120 germplasm resources revealed that melatonin treatment improved the salt tolerance of more than 65% of the common bean germplasm materials. Melatonin also up-regulated cell wall pathway genes by at least 46%. Furthermore, we analyzed the response of the common bean germplasm materials to melatonin treatment under salt stress using the key genes associated with the synthesis of the common bean cell wall as the molecular markers. The results showed that two pairs of markers were significantly associated with melatonin, and these could be used as candidate markers to predict whether common bean respond to exogenous melatonin and then enhance salt tolerance at the sprouting stage. This study shows that cell wall can respond to exogenous melatonin and enhance the salt tolerance of common bean. The makers identified in this study can be used to select common bean varieties that can respond to melatonin under stress. Overall, the study found that cell wall could response melatonin and enhance the salt tolerance and developed the makers for predicting varieties fit for melatonin under stress in common bean, which may be applied in the selection or development of common bean varieties with abiotic stress tolerance.

Abstract
Soil salinity severely threatens plant growth and crop performance. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a plant signal molecule, has been implicated in the regulation of plant responses to salinity stress. However, it is unclear how the transcriptional network regulates H2S biosynthesis during salt stress response. In this study, we identify a rice NAC (NAM, ATAF and CUC) transcription factor, OsNAC35-like (OsNACL35), from a salt-tolerant cultivar ‘Sea Rice 86′ (SR86) and further show that it may have improved salt tolerance via enhanced H2S production. The expression of OsNACL35 was significantly upregulated by high salinity and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The OsNACL35 protein was localized predominantly in the nucleus and was found to have transactivation activity in yeast. The overexpression of OsNACL35 (OsNACL35-OE) in japonica cultivar Nipponbare ramatically increased resistance to salinity stress, whereas its dominant-negative constructs (SUPERMAN repression domain, SRDX) conferred hypersensitivity to salt stress in the transgenic lines at the vegetative stage. Moreover, the quantitative real-time PCR analysis showed that many stress-associated genes were differentially expressed in the OsNACL35-OE and OsNACL35-SRDX lines. Interestingly, the ectopic expression of OsNACL35 triggered a sharp increase in H2S content by upregulating the expression of a H2S biosynthetic gene, OsDCD1, upon salinity stress. Furthermore, the dual luciferase and yeast one-hybrid assays indicated that OsNACL35 directly upregulated the expression of OsDCD1 by binding to the promoter sequence of OsDCD1. Taken together, our observations illustrate that OsNACL35 acts as a positive regulator that links H2S production to salt stress tolerance, which may hold promising utility in breeding salt-tolerant rice cultivar.

Abstract
The negative impact of the misuse of antibiotics on agriculture and human health has become a popular research topic with the increasing usage of antibiotics; however, little information is available about the mechanisms of OFL (ofloxacin) and Si (silicon). In this experiment, we applied 7 OFL concentrations to two Chinese cabbage cultivars (Qinghua and Biyu) to screen proper OFL concentrations. OFL concentrations of 0, 1, 2.5 and 5 mg L-1 were selected for the subsequent test and 1.2 mmol L-1 Si was used as mitigation. The results showed that Biyu suffered more damage than Qinghua and the injury degree increased in a concentration-dependent manner. With increasing OFL concentrations, the photosynthetic fluorescence was weakened significantly; under 1, 2.5 and 5 mg L-1 OFL, the Pn reduced by 5.35%, 35.92% and 43.62% in Qinghua and 33.98%, 41.94% and 64.66% in Biyu, respectively. The production rate of O2-, H2O2 and the MDA content were increased and Biyu appeared higher increase rates. In addition, the antioxidant enzymes contents first increased and then decreased and that of Qinghua increased more than Biyu. Si ensured the growth under OFL and protected its photosynthetic ability. Under the OFL1+Si, OFL2.5 + Si and OFL5+Si treatments, Pn increased by 3.91%, 15.95 and 15.69% in Qinghua and 28.82%, 20.40% and 39.01% in Biyu. Si also maintained the structural integrity of leaf organelles and improved the scavenging ability of ROS by increasing the activity and relative gene expression of antioxidant enzymes. Moreover, varietal differences may play a more important role than Si.

Abstract
Quinoa (Chenopodiumquinoa Willd.), originated from the Andean region of South America, shows more significant salt tolerance than other crops. To reveal how the plant hormone ethylene is involved in the quinoa responses to salt stress, 4-week-old quinoa seedlings of 'NL-6' treated with water, sodium chloride (NaCl), and NaCl with ethylene precursor 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) were collected and analyzed by transcriptional sequencing and tandem mass tag-based (TMT) quantitative proteomics. A total of 9672 proteins and 60,602 genes was identified. Among them, the genes encoding glutathione S-transferase (GST), peroxidase (POD), phosphate transporter (PT), glucan endonuclease (GLU), beta-galactosidase (BGAL), cellulose synthase (CES), trichome birefringence-like protein (TBL), glycine-rich cell wall structural protein (GRP), glucosyltransferase (GT), GDSL esterase/lipase (GELP), cytochrome P450 (CYP), and jasmonate-induced protein (JIP) were significantly differentially expressed. Further analysis suggested that the genes may mediate through osmotic adjustment, cell wall organization, reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging, and plant hormone signaling to take a part in the regulation of quinoa responses to ethylene and salt stress. Our results provide a strong foundation for exploration of the molecular mechanisms of quinoa responses to ethylene and salt stress.

Abstract
Salt and alkali stress affected the photosynthetic characteristics of Chinese cabbages. A salt-tolerant cultivar maintained its tolerance by ensuring the high ability of photosynthesis. The synthesis of organic acids and carbohydrates in leaves played important roles in improving the photosynthetic capacity of alkali-tolerant plants. Soil salinization has become an increasingly serious ecological problem, which limits the quality and yield of crops. As an important economic vegetable in winter, however, little is known about the response of Chinese cabbage to salt, alkali and salt-alkali stress in photosynthetic characteristics and chloroplast ultrastructure. Thus, two Chinese cabbage cultivars, 'Qinghua' (salt-tolerant-alkali-sensitive) and 'Biyu' (salt-sensitive-alkali-tolerant) were investigated under stresses to clarify the similarities and differences between salt tolerance and alkali tolerance pathways in Chinese cabbage. We found that the root of Qinghua, the leaf ultrastructure and net photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (Gs), water use efficiency (WUE), maximum photochemical quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm) and nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) were not affected by salt stress. However, Biyu was seriously affected under salt stress. Its growth indexes decreased by between 60 and 30% compared with the control and the photosynthetic indexes were also seriously affected under salt stress. This indicated that the salt-tolerant cultivar Qinghua improved the photosynthetic fluorescence ability to promote the synthesis of organic matter resulting in salt tolerance. In contrast, under alkali treatment, the root of Biyu was affected by alkali stress, but could still maintain good growth, and root and leaf structure were not seriously affected and could maintain the normal operations. Biyu improved its tolerance by improving the water use efficiency, regulating the synthesis of organic acids and carbohydrates, ensuring the synthesis of organic matter and ensured the normal growth of the plant.

Abstract
Salt stress results in the severe decline of yield and quality in wheat. In the present study, salt-tolerant Tritipyrum ("Y1805") and salt-sensitive wheat "Chinese Spring" ("CS") were selected from 121 wheat germplasms to test their physiological, antioxidant enzyme, and transcriptomic responses and mechanisms against salt stress and recovery. 56 chromosomes were identified in "Y1805" that comprised A, B, and D chromosomes from wheat parent and E chromosomes from Thinopyrum elongatum, adding to salt-tolerant trait. Salt stress had a greater inhibitory effect on roots than on shoots, and "Y1805" demonstrated stronger salt tolerance than "CS." Compared with "CS," the activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase in "Y1805" significantly increased under salt stress. "Y1805" could synthesize more proline and soluble sugars than "CS." Both the net photosynthetic rate and chlorophyll a/b were affected by salt stress, though the level of damage in "Y1805" was significantly less than in "CS." Transcriptome analysis showed that the differences in the transcriptional regulatory networks of "Y1805" were not only in response to salt stress but also in recovery. The functions of many salt-responsive differentially expressed genes were correlated closely with the pathways "peroxisome," "arginine and proline metabolism," "starch and sucrose metabolism," "chlorophyll and porphyrin metabolism," and "photosynthesis."
