Abstract
Malnutrition, defined as both undernutrition and overnutrition, is a major global health concern affecting millions of people. One possible way to address nutrient deficiency and combat malnutrition is through biofortification. A comprehensive review of the literature was conducted to explore the current state of biofortification research, including techniques, applications, effectiveness and challenges. Biofortification is a promising strategy for enhancing the nutritional condition of at-risk populations. Biofortified varieties of basic crops, including rice, wheat, maize and beans, with elevated amounts of vital micronutrients, such as iron, zinc, vitamin A and vitamin C, have been successfully developed using conventional and advanced technologies. Additionally, the ability to specifically modify crop genomes to improve their nutritional profiles has been made possible by recent developments in genetic engineering, such as CRISPR-Cas9 technology. The health conditions of people have been shown to improve and nutrient deficiencies were reduced when biofortified crops were grown. Particularly in environments with limited resources, biofortification showed considerable promise as a long-term and economical solution to nutrient shortages and malnutrition. To fully exploit the potential of biofortified crops to enhance public health and global nutrition, issues such as consumer acceptance, regulatory permitting and production and distribution scaling up need to be resolved. Collaboration among governments, researchers, non-governmental organizations and the private sector is essential to overcome these challenges and promote the widespread adoption of biofortification as a key part of global food security and nutrition strategies.

Abstract
MAIN CONCLUSION The biostimulant Hanseniaspora opuntiae regulates Arabidopsis thaliana root development and resistance to Botrytis cinerea. Beneficial microbes can increase plant nutrient accessibility and uptake, promote abiotic stress tolerance, and enhance disease resistance, while pathogenic microorganisms cause plant disease, affecting cellular homeostasis and leading to cell death in the most critical cases. Commonly, plants use specialized pattern recognition receptors to perceive beneficial or pathogen microorganisms. Although bacteria have been the most studied plant-associated beneficial microbes, the analysis of yeasts is receiving less attention. This study assessed the role of Hanseniaspora opuntiae, a fermentative yeast isolated from cacao musts, during Arabidopsis thaliana growth, development, and defense response to fungal pathogens. We evaluated the A. thaliana-H. opuntiae interaction using direct and indirect in vitro systems. Arabidopsis growth was significantly increased seven days post-inoculation with H. opuntiae during indirect interaction. Moreover, we observed that H. opuntiae cells had a strong auxin-like effect in A. thaliana root development during in vitro interaction. We show that 3-methyl-1-butanol and ethanol are the main volatile compounds produced by H. opuntiae. Subsequently, it was determined that A. thaliana plants inoculated with H. opuntiae have a long-lasting and systemic effect against Botrytis cinerea infection, but independently of auxin, ethylene, salicylic acid, or jasmonic acid pathways. Our results demonstrate that H. opuntiae is an important biostimulant that acts by regulating plant development and pathogen resistance through different hormone-related responses.

Abstract
Microbial volatile compounds (MVCs) are produced during the metabolism of microorganisms, are widely distributed in nature, and have significant applications in various fields. To date, several MVCs have been identified. Microbial groups such as bacteria and fungi release many organic and inorganic volatile compounds. They are typically small odorous compounds with low molecular masses, low boiling points, and lipophilic moieties with high vapor pressures. The physicochemical properties of MVCs help them to diffuse more readily in nature and allow dispersal to a more profound distance than other microbial non-volatile metabolites. In natural environments, plants communicate with several microorganisms and respond differently to MVCs. Here, we review the following points: (1) MVCs produced by various microbes including bacteria, fungi, viruses, yeasts, and algae; (2) How MVCs are effective, simple, efficient, and can modulate plant growth and developmental processes; and (3) how MVCs improve photosynthesis and increase plant resistance to various abiotic stressors.

Abstract
Regenerative 3agriculture prioritizes soil health to build up organic soil carbon and nitrogen stocks while supporting the active and diverse soil biota that is a prerequisite for maintaining crop productivity and quality in sustainable food production. This study aimed at unravelling the impact of organic and inorganic soil maintenance systems in a 'Red Jonaprince' apple (Malus × domestica Borkh.) orchard on soil microbiota biodiversity and soil physico-chemical properties. During our study, we compared seven floor management systems in terms of microbial community diversity. Fungal and bacterial communities on all taxonomic levels differed largely between systems that augmented organic matter (organic) and other tested inorganic regimes. The dominant phylum of the soil in all management systems was Ascomycota. The operational taxonomic units (OTUs) within the Ascomycota were largely identified as members of Sordariomycetes, followed by Agaricomycetes, and both dominated in organic systems versus inorganic. The most prominent phyla, Proteobacteria, accounted for 43% of all assigned bacteria OTUs. Gammaproteobacteria, Bacteroidia, and Alphaproteobacteria were predominant in organic samples, while Acidobacteriae, Verrucomicrobiae, and Gemmatimonadetes were more abundant in inorganic mulches.

Abstract
Bacteria emit a large number of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the environment. VOCs are species-specific and their emission depends on environmental conditions, such as growth medium, pH, temperature, incubation time and interaction with other microorganisms. These VOCs can enhance plant growth, suppress pathogens and act as signaling molecules during plant-microorganism interactions. Some bacterial VOCs have been reported to show strong antimicrobial, nematicidal, pesticidal, plant defense, induced tolerance and plant-growth-promoting activities under controlled conditions. Commonly produced antifungal VOCs include dimethyl trisulfide, dimethyl disulfide, benzothiazole, nonane, decanone and 1-butanol. Species of Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Arthrobacter, Enterobacter and Burkholderia produce plant growth promoting VOCs, such as acetoin and 2,3-butenediol. These VOCs affect expression of genes involved in defense and development in plant species (i.e., Arabidopsis, tobacco, tomato, potato, millet and maize). VOCs are also implicated in altering pathogenesis-related genes, inducing systemic resistance, modulating plant metabolic pathways and acquiring nutrients. However, detailed mechanisms of action of VOCs need to be further explored. This review summarizes the bioactive VOCs produced by diverse bacterial species as an alternative to agrochemicals, their mechanism of action and challenges for employment of bacterial VOCs for sustainable agricultural practices. Future studies on technological improvements for bacterial VOCs application under greenhouse and open field conditions are warranted.

Abstract
Plant roots are colonized by rhizobacteria, and these soil microorganisms can not only stimulate plant growth but also increase tolerance to stress through the production of volatile organic compounds. However, little is known about the effect that these plant beneficial volatiles may have on bacteria. In this study, the effects on growth and oxidative status of different concentrations of three volatiles already reported to have a positive influence on plant growth (2-butanone, 3-methyl-1-butanol, and 2,3-butanediol) were determined in A. thaliana and Rhizobium sp. strain E20-8 via airborne exposure in the presence and absence of Cd. It was expected to ascertain if the plant and the bacterium are influenced in the same way by the volatiles, and if exposure to stress (Cd) shifts the effects of volatiles on plants and bacteria. Results showed the antioxidant activity of the volatiles protecting the plant cell metabolism from Cd toxicity and increasing plant tolerance to Cd. Effects on bacteria were less positive. The two alcohols (3-methyl-1-butanol and 2,3-butanediol) increased Cd toxicity, and the ketone (2-butanone) was able to protect Rhizobium from Cd stress, constituting an alternative way to protect soil bacterial communities from stress. The application of 2-butanone thus emerges as an alternative way to increase crop production and crop resilience to stress in a more sustainable way, either directly or through the enhancement of PGPR activity.

Abstract
Traditional control methods have drawbacks in controlling Verticillium wilt diseases caused by Verticillium dahliae Kleb.; therefore, an efficient and environmentally friendly strategy for disease control must be identified and the mechanisms determined. In this study, a soil-isolated strain SBB was identified as Bacillus velezensis based on 16S rRNA, gyrA, and gyrB gene sequences. In vitro, strain SBB had excellent inhibitory effects on V. dahliae, with the highest inhibition rate of 70.94%. Moreover, strain SBB inhibited production of the conidia of V. dahliae and suppressed the production of microsclerotia and melanin. Through gas chromatograph–mass spectrometer analysis, nine compounds were detected from the volatile organic compounds produced by SBB, among which 2-nonanol, 2-heptanone, 6-methyl-2-heptanone, and 2-nonanone could completely inhibit V. dahliae growth. Strain SBB produced cellulase, amylase, protease, and siderophore. During inhibitory action on V. dahliae, strain SBB showed upregulated expression of genes encoding non-volatile inhibitory metabolites, including difficidin, bacilysin, and bacillaene, at 1.923-, 1.848-, and 1.448-fold higher, respectively. Thus, our study proved that strain SBB had an efficient antagonistic effect on V. dahliae, suggesting strain SBB can be used as a potential biological control agent against Verticillium wilt.

Abstract
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by microorganisms are considered promising environmental-safety fumigants for controlling soil-borne diseases. Verticillium dahliae, a notorious fungal pathogen, causes economically important wilt diseases in agriculture and forestry industries. Here, we determined the antifungal activity of VOCs produced by Trichoderma koningiopsis T2. The VOCs from T. koningiopsis T2 were trapped by solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and tentatively identified through gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The microsclerotia formation, cell wall-degrading enzymes and melanin synthesis of V. dahliae exposed to the VOC mixtures and selected single standards were examined. The results showed that the VOCs produced by strain T2 significantly inhibited the growth of V. dahliae mycelium and reduced the severity of Verticillium wilt in tobacco and cotton. Six individual compounds were identified in the volatilome of T. koningiopsis T2, and the dominant compounds were 3-octanone, 3-methyl-1-butanol, butanoic acid ethyl ester and 2-hexyl-furan. The VOCs of strain T2 exert a significant inhibitory effect on microsclerotia formation and decreased the activities of pectin lyase and endo-β-1,4-glucanase in V. dahliae. VOCs also downregulated the VdT3HR, VdT4HR, and VdSCD genes related to melanin synthesis by 29. 41-, 10. 49-, and 3.11-fold, respectively. Therefore, T. koningiopsis T2 has potential as a promising biofumigant for the biocontrol of Verticillium wilt disease.

Abstract
Iron deficiency causes chlorosis and growth inhibition in Cinnamomum camphora, an important landscaping tree species. Siderophores produced by plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria have been widely reported to play an indispensable role in plant iron nutrition. However, little to date has been determined about how microbial siderophores promote plant iron absorption. In this study, multidisciplinary approaches, including physiological, biochemical and transcriptome methods, were used to investigate the role of deferoxamine (DFO) in regulating Fe availability in C. camphora seedlings. Our results showed that DFO supplementation significantly increased the Fe2+ content, SPAD value and ferric-chelate reductase (FCR) activity in plants, suggesting its beneficial effect under Fe deficiency. This DFO-driven amelioration of Fe deficiency was further supported by the improvement of photosynthesis. Intriguingly, DFO treatment activated the metabolic pathway of glutathione (GSH) synthesis, and exogenous spraying reduced glutathione and also alleviated chlorosis in C. camphora. In addition, the expression of some Fe acquisition and transport-related genes, including CcbHLH, CcFRO6, CcIRT2, CcNramp5, CcOPT3 and CcVIT4, was significantly upregulated by DFO treatment. Collectively, our data demonstrated an effective, economical and feasible organic iron-complexing agent for iron-deficient camphor trees and provided new insights into the mechanism by which siderophores promote iron absorption in plants.

Abstract
Soil salinity negatively modulates plant growth and development, contributing to severe decreases in the growth and production of crops. Mucilaginibacter sp. K is a root endophytic bacterium that was previously reported by our laboratory to stimulate growth and confer salt tolerance in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). The main purpose of the present study is to elucidate the physiological and molecular machinery responsible for the prospective salt tolerance as imparted by Mucilaginibacter sp. K. We first report that auxin, gibberellin, and MPK6 signalings were required for strain K-induced growth promotion and salt tolerance in Arabidopsis. Then, this strain was assessed as a remediation strategy to improve maize performance under salinity stress. Under normal growth conditions, the seed vigor index, nitrogen content, and plant growth were significantly improved in maize. After NaCl exposure, strain K significantly promoted the growth of maize seedlings, ameliorated decline in chlorophyll content and reduced accretion of MDA and ROS compared with the control. The possible mechanisms involved in salt resistance in maize could be the improved activities of SOD and POD (antioxidative system) and SPS (sucrose biosynthesis), upregulated content of total soluble sugar and ABA, and reduced Na+ accumulation. These physiological changes were then confirmed by induced gene expression for ion transportation, photosynthesis, ABA biosynthesis, and carbon metabolism. In summary, these results suggest that strain K promotes plant growth through increases in photosynthesis and auxin- and MPK6-dependent pathways; it also bestows salt resistance on plants through protection against oxidative toxicity, Na+ imbalance, and osmotic stress, along with the activation of auxin-, gibberellin-, and MPK6-dependent signaling pathways. This is the first detailed report of maize growth promotion by a Mucilaginibacter sp. strain from wild plant. This strain could be used as a favorable biofertilizer and a salinity stress alleviator for maize, with further ascertainment as to its reliability of performance under field conditions and in the presence of salt stress.

Abstract
Genomic information for bacteria within the genus Rahnella remains limited. Rahnella sp. JZ-GX1 was previously isolated from the Pinus massoniana rhizosphere in China and shows potential as a plant growth-promoting (PGP) bacterium. In the present work, we combined the GridION Nanopore ONT and Illumina sequencing platforms to obtain the complete genome sequence of strain JZ-GX1, and the application effects of the strain in natural field environment was assessed. The whole genome of Rahnella sp. JZ-GX1 comprised a single circular chromosome (5,472,828 bp, G + C content of 53.53%) with 4,483 protein-coding sequences, 22 rRNAs, and 77 tRNAs. Based on whole genome phylogenetic and average nucleotide identity (ANI) analysis, the JZ-GX1 strain was reidentified as R. victoriana. Genes related to indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), phosphorus solubilization, nitrogen fixation, siderophores, acetoin, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) production, spermidine and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) biosynthesis were present in the genome of strain JZ-GX1. In addition, these functions were also confirmed by in vitro experiments. Importantly, compared to uninoculated control plants, Pyrus serotina, Malus spectabilis, Populus euramericana (Dode) Guinier cv. “San Martino” (I-72 poplar) and Pinus elliottii plants inoculated with strain JZ-GX1 showed increased heights and ground diameters. These findings improve our understanding of R. victoriana JZ-GX1 as a potential biofertilizer in agriculture.

Abstract
Nutrient availability is a determining factor for crop yield and quality. While fertilization is a major approach for improving plant nutrition, its efficacy can be limited and the production and application of fertilizers frequently bring problems to the environment. A large number of soil microbes are capable of enhancing plant nutrient acquisition and thereby offer environmentally benign solutions to meet the requirements of plant nutrition. Herein we provide summations of how beneficial microbes enhance plant acquisition of macronutrients and micronutrients. We also review recent studies on nutrition-dependent plant-microbe interactions, which highlight the plant's initiative in establishing or deterring the plant-microbe association. By dissecting complex signaling interactions between microbes within the root microbiome, a greater understanding of microbe-enhanced plant nutrition under specific biotic and abiotic stresses will be possible.
