Early and late selection: effects of load, dilution and salience

Attention and platypuses

This perspective piece discusses a set of attentional phenomena that are not easily accommodated within current theories of attentional selection. We call these phenomena attentional platypuses, as they allude to an observation that within biological taxonomies the platypus does not fit into either mammal or bird categories. Similarly, attentional phenomena that do not fit neatly within current attentional models suggest that current models are in need of a revision. We list a few instances of the "attentional platypuses" and then offer a new approach, that we term dynamically weighted prioritization, stipulating that multiple factors impinge onto the attentional priority map, each with a corresponding weight. The interaction between factors and their corresponding weights determines the current state of the priority map which subsequently constrains/guides attentional allocation. We propose that this new approach should be considered as a supplement to existing models of attention, especially those that emphasize categorical organizations. Top-down control of attention under varying task loads

The performance of a goal-directed task is often interrupted by task-irrelevant distractors. This distractor interference has well been demonstrated in a large body of studies employing the Eriksen flanker paradigm. A notable finding regarding this issue is that distractor interference is attenuated by increased perceptual load or the presence of non-target stimuli diluting distractors. Besides increased perceptual load or the presence of diluters, we hypothesized that either suppression of distractor or enhancement of target via top-down attentional control would also contribute to modulating distractor interference. To test this, we had participants identify a target stimulus while ignoring a distractor under three different conditions; under low load, only the target and distractor was presented, while under high load, the target was surrounded by non-target letters. In the dilution condition, the target was accompanied by non-targets, whose colors were distinct from the target. Importantly, following the task stimuli, a probe stimulus was presented either in the target location, non-target location, or distractor location. As results, under low load, attention was captured by the target stimulus in a bottom-up manner at the early stage of processing. By contrast, in the high load and dilution conditions, attention was focused on the target in a top-down manner. Taken together, we suggest that increasing perceptual load or presenting diluters incentivizes the establishment of top-down bias toward the target stimulus, which plays a role in attenuating distractor interference.

Hyperfocus: the forgotten frontier of attention

'Hyperfocus' is a phenomenon that reflects one's complete absorption in a task, to a point where a person appears to completely ignore or 'tune out' everything else. Hyperfocus is most often mentioned in the context of autism, schizophrenia, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, but research into its effect on cognitive and neural functioning is limited. We propose that hyperfocus is a critically important aspect of cognition, particularly with regard to clinical populations, and that it warrants significant investigation. Hyperfocus, though ostensibly self-explanatory, is poorly defined within the literature. In many cases, hyperfocus goes undefined, relying on the assumption that the reader inherently knows what it entails. Thus, there is no single consensus to what constitutes hyperfocus. Moreover, some studies do not refer to hyperfocus by name, but describe processes that may be related. In this paper, we review how hyperfocus (as well as possibly related phenomena) has been defined and measured, the challenges associated with hyperfocus research, and assess how hyperfocus affects both neurotypical and clinical populations. Using this foundation, we provide constructive criticism about previously used methods and analyses. We also propose an operational definition of hyperfocus for researchers to use moving forward.
