Nurse Adaptability and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms During the COVID-19 Pandemic: The Effects of Family and Perceived Organizational Support

Aging and Burnout for Nurses in an Acute Care Setting: The First Wave of COVID-19

We examined the relationship between age, coping, and burnout during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic with nurses in Texas (N = 376). Nurses were recruited through a professional association and snowball sampling methodology for the cross-sectional survey study. Framed in lifespan development theories, we expected that nurse age and experience would be positively correlated with positive coping strategies (e.g., getting emotional support from others) and negatively correlated with negative coping strategies (e.g., drinking and drug use). We also expected age to be negatively related to the emotional exhaustion and depersonalization facets of burnout and positively related to the personal accomplishment facet of burnout. Findings were largely supported in that age was positively associated with positive coping and personal accomplishment and age and experience were negatively correlated with negative coping and depersonalization. Age was not, however, associated with emotional exhaustion. Mediation models further suggest that coping explains some of the effect of age on burnout. A theoretical extension of lifespan development models into an extreme environment and practical implications for coping in these environments are discussed.

Work-Related Traumatic Stress Response in Nurses Employed in COVID-19 Settings

Nurses may be at a higher risk of experiencing work-related traumatic stress response during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to other clinicians. This study aimed to investigate the correlations between work-related trauma symptoms and demographic factors, psychosocial hazards and stress response in a census sample of nurses working in COVID-19 settings in Cyprus. In this nationwide descriptive and cross-sectional study, data were collected between April and May 2020 using a questionnaire that included sociodemographic, educational and employment and work-related variables, as well as a modified version of the Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale (STSS) for the assessment of work-related trauma symptoms during the pandemic. Overall, 233 nurses participated (with a response rate of 61.3%) and 25.7% of them reported clinical work-related trauma symptoms (STSS-M > 55; actual scale range: 17-85). The mean value for emotional exhaustion was 7.3 (SD: 2.29; visual scale range: 1-10), while the value for distress that was caused by being avoided due to work in COVID-19 units was 6.98 (SD: 2.69; visual scale range: 1-10). Positive associations were noted between trauma symptoms and both emotional exhaustion and distress from being avoided by others due to work in a COVID-19 setting and a negative association was also found between trauma symptoms and satisfaction from organizational support variables (all p < 0.002). Working in COVID-19 settings during the pandemic is a stressful experience that has been linked to psychologically traumatic symptoms Thus, supportive measures are proposed for healthcare personnel, even in countries with low COVID-19 burden.

Working Conditions and Wellbeing among Prison Nurses during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Comparison to Community Nurses

The psychological health and work challenges of nurses working in prisons during the COVID-19 pandemic are understudied. We evaluated the work and wellbeing characteristics of a California prison nurse group, with a comparison to those of a community nurse group. From May to November 2020, an online survey measured psychosocial and organizational work factors, sleep habits, psychological characteristics, COVID-19 impacts, and pre-pandemic recall among 62 prison nurses and 47 community nurses. Prison nurses had significantly longer work hours (54.73 ± 14.52, p < 0.0001), higher pandemic-related work demands, and less sleep hours (5.36 ± 1.30, p < 0.0001) than community nurses. Community nurses had significantly higher pandemic-related fear levels (work infection: p = 0.0115, general: p = 0.0025) and lower perceived personal protective equipment (PPE) supply (p = 0.0103). Between pre-pandemic and pandemic periods, both groups had significantly increased night shift assignments and decreased sleep hours, but the prison group had increased work hours. Although not statistically significant, both groups had high occupational stress and prevalence of post-traumatic stress symptoms. Our results indicate that prison nurses experienced work and wellbeing challenges during the pandemic. Future research and practice ought to address nurses' workload, PPE, and psychological resources in correctional facilities and healthcare organizations.

ANALYSIS OF POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER IN NURSING PROFESSIONALS DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

ABSTRACT Objective to analyze the prevalence of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and factors associated with its development in Nursing professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method an observational, analytical and cross-sectional study conducted with 309 Nursing professionals, using a questionnaire to assess sociodemographic data and work-related information, in addition to the Impact Event Scale - Revised, which aims at collecting diverse information related to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms. Results the study participants were 176 nurses and 133 nursing technicians: 83.82% female and 56.96% male nurses. As for the hour load, 55.66% asserted working up to 40 weekly hours 47.90% had more than one employment contract, 89.32% were active in the front line against the pandemic, and 60.19% reported an increase in workload. However, 64.40% presented symptoms or were diagnosed with COVID-19 and 43.37% indicated emotional impairment. Using the classifications of the overall Impact Event Scale - Revised score, 29 (53.40%) obtained scores of at least 33, the cutoff point for likely diagnosis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Conclusion it was evidenced that more than half of the study sample presented a high risk of developing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in the Impact Event Scale - Revised scale. Factors associated with the development of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders in Nursing professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic include use of psychotropic drugs, age up to 35 years old, and occurrence of physical and emotional changes.

ANÁLISE DO TRANSTORNO DO ESTRESSE PÓS-TRAUMÁTICO EM PROFISSIONAIS DE ENFERMAGEM DURANTE A PANDEMIA DA COVID-19

RESUMO Objetivo analisar a prevalência de Transtorno de Estresse Pós-Traumático e os fatores associados ao desenvolvimento do Transtorno de Estresse Pós-Traumático em profissionais de enfermagem durante a pandemia da COVID-19. Método estudo observacional, analítico e transversal, realizado com 309 profissionais de enfermagem, utilizando questionário para avaliar dados sociodemográficos e informações sobre o trabalho, além da Escala do Impacto do Evento - Revisada (IES-R), que visa coletar informações relacionadas à sintomatologia do Transtorno de Estresse Pós-Traumático. Resultados o estudo contou com 176 enfermeiros e 133 técnicos de enfermagem, sendo 83,82% do sexo feminino e 56,96% de enfermeiros. Quanto ao trabalho, 55,66% possuíam carga horária de até 40 horas semanais, 47,90% tinham mais de um vínculo, 89,32% atuaram na linha de frente da pandemia e 60,19% apontaram aumento da carga de trabalho. Não obstante, 64,40% apresentaram sintomas ou foram diagnosticados com COVID-19 e 43,37% apontaram prejuízo emocional. Utilizando as classificações do escore geral da Escala do Impacto do Evento - Revisada, 29, 53,40% atingiram pontuação maior ou igual a 33, ponto de corte para o provável diagnóstico de Transtorno do Estresse Pós-Traumático. Conclusão foi evidenciado que mais da metade da amostra do estudo apresentou na escala Escala do Impacto do Evento - Revisada alto risco de desenvolver Transtorno do Estresse Pós-Traumático. Como fatores associados ao desenvolvimento do Transtorno de Estresse Pós-Traumático em profissionais de enfermagem durante a pandemia da COVID-19, estão o uso de medicamentos psicotrópicos, idade até 35 anos, mudança financeira e emocional.
