Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Hand and Arm Dysfunction: A Google Trends Analysis

Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic prompted individuals to make a number of lifestyle alterations. Few studies have examined the development of any hand and/or arm dysfunctions that may have resulted. The purpose of this study was to identify hand and/or arm overuse injuries that may have occurred as a result of the stay-at-home orders during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods A Google Trends analysis of the terms "hand pain," "carpal tunnel syndrome," "cubital tunnel syndrome," "trigger finger," "de Quervain tenosynovitis," "elbow pain," "tennis elbow," "golfer's elbow," "thumb base arthritis," and "extensor carpi ulnaris tenosynovitis" in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and India was performed from June 2019 to January 2023. The noted timeframe was divided into quarters of 47 weeks, with the first quarter (June 2, 2019, through April 19, 2020) serving as a pre-pandemic baseline. The analysis compared initial results noted in the first quarter to individual results from the second, third, and fourth quarters. Results The most notable findings were the upward trends of the terms "hand pain," "carpal tunnel," and "trigger finger." Specifically, India showed a significant increase in the terms "hand pain" and "carpal tunnel syndrome" in the second, third, and fourth quarters. The United States additionally showed a significant upward trend in the terms "carpal tunnel syndrome" and "trigger finger" in the second, third, and fourth quarters. The United Kingdom also reported a significant upward trend in the term "trigger finger" in the second, third, and fourth quarters. Conclusion Numerous factors likely contributed to the increased interest in these terms, such as the increase in telework and associated mobile device usage due to lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic. Movements associated with performing these tasks may have led to an increased prevalence of hand pain, thus prompting increased queries of these terms through an online search engine.

Work fatigue during COVID-19 lockdown teleworking: the role of psychosocial, environmental, and social working conditions

Background

During national lockdowns in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, previously office-based workers who transitioned to home-based teleworking faced additional demands (e.g., childcare, inadequate homeworking spaces) likely resulting in poor work privacy fit. Previous office research suggests poor work privacy fit is associated with lower wellbeing and higher work fatigue. Emerging evidence suggests a relationship between childcare duties during pandemic teleworking and work fatigue. In addition to psychosocial working conditions (job demand, job control, and job change management), which are acknowledged predictors of work fatigue, this poses a significant threat to occupational health during pandemic teleworking. However, the relative effects of aspects of the psychosocial environment (job demands and resources), the home office environment (including privacy fit), and the social environment (childcare) on work fatigue as well as their interactions are under-explored.

Objective

This study examined the relationships between the psychosocial, environmental, and social working conditions of teleworking during the first COVID-19 lockdown and work fatigue. Specifically, the study examined teleworkers' physical work environment (e.g., if and how home office space is shared, crowding, and noise perceptions) as predictors of privacy fit and the relationship between privacy fit, childcare, psychosocial working conditions (job demand, job control, and job change management), and work fatigue. Work privacy fit was hypothesized to mediate the relationship between childcare and work fatigue.

Methods

An online cross-sectional survey was conducted with teleworkers (n = 300) during the first COVID-19 lockdown in April and May 2020; most participants were in Germany, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

Results

Path analysis was used to examine the hypothesized relationships. Privacy fit was lower for those reporting greater levels of noise in home-working spaces and those feeling crowded at home. Work fatigue was lower amongst those with greater privacy fit and higher amongst those with high levels of job demand. An indirect relationship was observed between childcare and work fatigue with privacy fit mediating this relationship.

Conclusion

The influence of privacy fit has so far been largely neglected in research on teleworking, especially during the pandemic. However, its contribution to workers' wellbeing should be acknowledged in occupational health strategies.

Becoming a Distance Manager: Managerial Experiences, Perceived Organizational Support, and Job Satisfaction During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic having radically changed the way we now work, many recent studies have focused on employees' experiences and well-being, their performance and job satisfaction (JSA), and ways to ensure the best support for them when working from home (WFH). However, less attention has been given to managers' experiences in adapting to the new role of distance management and supporting them with this transition. This study aims to explore how managers experienced distance management, and the perceived organizational support (POS), and the effect of organizational support has on their JSA during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Data from 1,016 line, middle and top managers in Danish workplaces were collected in March 2021, 1 year after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. We applied descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and partial least square structural equation modeling to investigate the relation of perceived organizational support (POS) and the JSA of distance managers. Control variables were the respondents' demographic characteristics, specifically gender, age, and management level. The study offers insights into the managerial experiences of becoming a distance manager, helps to understand the relationship between POS and managers' JSA, and shows a positive relationship similarly for the managers as for employees. The study shows that most managers found their work as distance managers more demanding and worked more hours. The data demonstrate that managers received the most support from their own employees and manager peers, whereas administrative support was largely lacking. The data also show that the majority (67%) of the managers prefer to manage from the office, but similarly, they can continue managing from a distance if needed post-pandemic. The study adds to the literature on workplaces' transitioning to distance management and hybrid work and contributes to understanding the role of POS and managers' JSA during this transition. Consequently, if an organization aims to offer hybrid work, improving support from top management and in-house support functions would help maintain or increase managers' JSA.
