Abstract
OBJECTIVES Hemoglobin (Hgb) is associated with cognitive function, with low and high levels of Hgb leading to impaired cerebral oxygenation and perfusion. Yet, current studies focused on understanding the association between Hgb and cognitive function without consideration for each cognitive domain. Thus, this study aims to identify and visualize potentially interactive associations between Hgb and specific cognitive domains among older adults. METHOD This is a secondary data analysis using Wave II data from the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP) and included 1022 older adults aged between 65 and 85 years. The network structure of three different models was estimated to understand the association between specific cognitive domains and Hgb in a mixed graphical model using the R-package 'mgm'. Model 1 did not adjust for any covariates, Model 2 adjusted for age and gender, and Model 3 adjusted for all covariates. RESULTS Among all cognitive domains, the visuospatial (edge weight = 0.06-0.10) and memory domains (0.04-0.07) were associated with Hgb in all three models Though not present in Model 3, the attention domain was associated with Hgb in Model 1 and Model 2 (0.08-0.11). In addition, the predictability of Hgb was the highest (8.1%) in Model 3. CONCLUSION Findings from this study suggest that cognition should be considered as a multidimensional construct, and its specific cognitive domain should be carefully assessed and managed in relation to Hgb among older adults.

Abstract
(1) Background: Cognitive decline (CD), considered a precursory state of dementia, is frequently encountered in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM-2) and might even have a higher prevalence in those with associated atrial fibrillation (AF). In this study, we aimed to research if the association of DM-2 and AF favors a precocious onset of CD. (2) Methods: This study was conducted on 160 patients, featuring 50 with DM-2, 54 with DM-2 and AF, and 56 subjects without DM-2 and AF, all evaluated clinically and with five neuropsychiatric scales. (3) Results: The Mini-Mental-State-Examination (MMSE), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Activities of Daily Living Score (ADL), Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Score (IADL), and Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) were significantly altered in patients with DM-2 and AF in comparison to patients without these diseases. The logistic regression model indicated that, in patients with DM-2 and AF, an increase of one year in age is associated with a 7.3% augmentation of the risk of a precocious onset of CD (MMSE < 27). (4) Conclusions: CD is more frequent in patients with DM-2, especially when associated with AF, versus those without DM-2 and AF. Our findings suggest that an older age and associated dyslipidemia represent risk factors for CD in patients with DM-2.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Systematically review randomized controlled trials on the efficacy of cognitive training on executive functions in healthy older people. MEASURES The outcome measures were related to inhibitory control, working memory, and cognitive flexibility. RESULTS Thirty-one trials were included in the systematic review and thirteen trials in the meta-analysis. In the overall analysis, the cognitive training enhanced inhibitory control when measured by the Stroop task (p < .001, d = 1.64) and working memory when measured by the Corsi Block task (p = .002, d = .16). A marginal significance was found for working memory in the Digit Span task - Forward (p = .06, d = .92). However, cognitive training did not enhance inhibitory control when measured by the Go/No-Go task (p = .76, d = .59), working memory when measured by the Digit Span - Backward (p = .72, d = .95) and N-Back (p = .10, d = .26) tasks, and cognitive flexibility when measured by Trail Making - Part B (p = .08, d = .27) and Semantic Fluency (p = .49, d = .06) tasks. CONCLUSION Mixed evidence was found for inhibitory control and working memory; cognitive flexibility showed no evidence of improvement.

Abstract
Growing evidence suggests that participation in enriching activities (physical, social, and mental) across the life course is beneficial for cognitive functioning in older age. However, few studies have examined the effects of enrichment across the entire life course within the same participants. Using 2,931 participants in the Health and Retirement Study, we linked self-report data from later life and retrospective self-report data from early life and midlife to cognitive performance after Age 65. We categorized participants as having either high (top ∼25%) or average to low (bottom ∼75%) level of enrichment during each life period. Thus, eight groups were identified that reflected unique patterns of enrichment during early, mid, and later life (e.g., high-high-high). Using growth curve modeling, we found that life course enrichment patterns predicted both cognitive functioning and the rate of cognitive decline across five time points spanning 8 years (Aim 1). Groups with high enrichment during at least one life period had higher performance and slower decline in older age, compared to those who had average to low levels of enrichment throughout all three life periods. We also found that high enrichment during each life period independently predicted better cognitive performance and that high enrichment during early and later life also predicted slower cognitive decline (Aim 2). These findings support the idea that high enrichment is beneficial for cognition in later life and that the effects are long-lasting, even when individuals are inconsistent in enrichment engagement throughout the entire life course. Abstract
Cognitive function and hearing are known to both decline in older adults. As hearing loss is proposed to be one modifiable risk factor for dementia, the impact of auditory rehabilitation on cognitive decline has been gaining increasing attention. Despite a large number of studies, long-term data are still rare. In a large prospective longitudinal monocentric study, 50 adults (aged ≥ 50 years) with severe postlingual bilateral hearing loss received a cochlear implant (CI). They underwent comprehensive neurocognitive testing prior to implantation (T1), at 12 months (T2) and up to 65 months (T3) after implantation. Various cognitive subdomains such as attention, inhibition, working memory, verbal fluency, mental flexibility and (delayed) recall were assessed by the computer-based non-auditory test battery ALAcog©. The observed trajectories of two exemplary cognitive subdomains (delayed recall and working memory) were then fitted over time using multilevel growth models to adjust for sociodemographic covariates and compared with 5-year longitudinal data from a sample of older adults from the representative Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) study. Postoperatively, auditory functions improved from 6.98% (SD 12.83) to 57.29% (SD 20.18) in monosyllabic speech understanding. Cognitive functions significantly increased from T1 to T3 in attention (p = 0.001), delayed recall (p = 0.001), working memory (OSPAN; p = 0.001), verbal fluency (p = 0.004), and inhibition (p = 0.002). A closer look at follow-up revealed that cognitive improvement could be detected between T1 and T2 and thereafter remained stable in all subtests (p ≥ 0.06). Additional longitudinal analysis confirmed these findings in a rigorous multilevel approach in two exemplary cognitive subdomains. In contrast to the SHARE data, there was no evidence for age-differential associations over time in CI recipients. This suggests that older adults benefit equally from cochlear implantation. CI users with worse preoperative cognitive skills experienced the most benefit (p < 0.0001). Auditory rehabilitation by cochlear implantation has a stimulating effect on cognitive functions beyond an improvement in speech understanding and an increased well-being. Large multicenter studies using standardized protocols have to be undertaken in the future to find out whether hearing restoration might help to prevent cognitive decline.

Abstract
At present, dementia is a hot topic. Hearing loss is considered to be a modifiable risk factor for cognitive decline. The underlying mechanism remains unclear and might be mediated by socioeconomic and psychosocial factors. Cochlear implantation has been shown not only to restore auditory abilities, but also to decrease mental distress and to improve cognitive functions in people with severe hearing impairment. However, the promising results need to be confirmed. In a prospective single-center study, we tested the neurocognitive abilities of a large group of 71 subjects with bilateral severe hearing impairment with a mean age of 66.03 (SD = 9.15) preoperatively and 6, 12, and 24 months after cochlear implantation using a comprehensive non-auditory computer-based test battery, and we also assessed the cognitive reserve (CR) [Cognitive Reserve Index (CRI)], health-related quality of life (QoL) (Nijmegen Cochlear Implant Questionnaire), and depression (Geriatric Depression Scale-15). Cognitive functions significantly increased after 6 months in attention (p = 0.00004), working memory (operation span task; p = 0.002), and inhibition (p = 0.0002); and after 12 months in recall (p = 0.003) and verbal fluency (p = 0.0048), and remained stable up to 24 months (p ≥ 0.06). The CR positively correlated with cognitive functions pre- and post-operatively (both p < 0.005), but postoperative improvement in cognition was better in subjects with poor CR (p = 0.003). Depression had only a slight influence on one subtest. No correlation was found among cognitive skills, quality of life, and speech perception (each p ≥ 0.05). Cochlear implantation creates an enriched environment stimulating the plasticity of the brain with a global positive impact on neurocognitive functions, especially in subjects with poor preoperative cognitive performance and low cognitive reserve.
