Gaps in Knowledge About SARS-CoV-2 & COVID-19 Among University Students Are Associated With Negative Attitudes Toward People With COVID-19: A Cross-Sectional Study in Cyprus

The effect of a self-learned virtual learning package on knowledge, attitude, and self-care behaviors of COVID-19 in people referred to health and treatment centers

BACKGROUND

COVID-19 is one of the most common diseases in recent years, the most important way to prevent is through self-care behaviors; therefore, it is important to these behaviors in people. According to the importance of promoting self-care behaviors of this disease, and according to the characteristics and effectiveness of interventions based on behavior change, this study aimed to investigate the effect of educational intervention on self-care behaviors of COVID-19 in a group of patients.

METHODS

This quasi-experimental study was conducted on 164 people who referred to health and treatment centers in Dehdasht City, Iran. The cluster sampling method divided the participants into experimental and control groups at random (82 people for each group). Data collection tool was a researcher-made questionnaire completed by the control and experimental groups before and three months after the intervention. The intervention program in this training group is to form a WhatsApp group and send messages in the form of audio files, text messages, text messages with photos, video messages, and PowerPoints. After creating the group and adding the participants, according to the agreement with the group members, every day of the week (8:00 am to 12:00 pm) to send educational files through the WhatsApp application. Also, the group members could ask their questions and problems to the researcher during the designated hours. The control group was also given routine care and follow-up at the centers, and no training was given regarding self-care behaviors. After entering the SPSS 24, data were analyzed by independent t, chi-square, and paired t statistical tests.

RESULTS

164 individuals working in healthcare services from health and treatment centers were included in this study. Before the intervention, demographic characteristics such as marital status, education level, medical history, and smoking history were similar between the two groups (P > 0.05), as indicated by the results of chi-square tests. Furthermore, there were no significant differences in the mean scores of knowledge, attitude, and self-care behaviors between the experimental and control groups prior to the intervention (P > 0.05), according to independent t-tests. Following the intervention, notable changes were observed. The post-intervention analysis revealed statistically significant differences between the experimental and control groups in terms of knowledge, attitude, and self-care behaviors (P = 0.001). Specifically, the experimental group exhibited significant improvements in these variables compared to the control group.

CONCLUSION

In this study, education led to the improvement of self-care behaviors in people who referred to health centers. Considering the importance of the role of health education in promoting self-care behaviors as well as preventing infectious diseases such as COVID-19, it is suggested that educational interventions focus on self-care behaviors in other diseases.

Medical students' attitudes and perceptions of influenza and SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in Cyprus

Introduction

Infectious diseases constitute a significant problem globally and healthcare professionals (HCP) show suboptimal vaccination rates. We aimed to evaluate the determinants affecting vaccination against influenza and SARS-CoV-2 among medical students in Cyprus.

Methods

We conducted a cross-sectional study based on a self-reported, anonymous questionnaire that was sent to all medical students of two Medical Schools in the Republic of Cyprus.

Results

Among 266 respondents, 50.8% had been vaccinated against influenza in the past and 20.1% in 2020-21. The majority believed that influenza and SARS-CoV-2 vaccines are safe and effective. Regarding vaccination in Cyprus, 41.3% did not know the current recommendations and a higher proportion of preclinical students replied incorrectly, compared to clinical students. Slightly over half (56.4%) considered themselves adequately informed about influenza vaccination, with more clinical students appearing confident (p=0.068). An overwhelming 71.2% were concerned about contracting SARS-CoV-2, compared to 25.4% with regards to influenza. Up to 76.8% considered themselves adequately informed about SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, with significantly more clinical students being confident (p<0.001). Although more preclinical students appeared hesitant, most students had either been vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2 (49.4%) or would be as soon as possible (32.1%). Vaccination refusal was 2.3%, a group comprised entirely of preclinical students.

Conclusions

Our study provides relevant and actionable information about differences in attitudes and perceptions between clinical and preclinical medical students regarding vaccination against influenza and SARS-CoV-2 and highlights the importance of organized, systemic efforts to increase vaccination coverage.

Online survey of university students' perception, awareness and adherence to COVID-19 prevention measures

BACKGROUND

Determining factors correlated with protective measures against COVID-19 is important to improve public health response. This study describes student opinions related to university COVID-19 preventive measures.

METHODS

In fall 2020, 643 US university students completed an online survey on perception, awareness, and adherence to COVID-19 preventive measures. Outcomes included protocol effectiveness (self or others), protocol adherence (self or others), consequences of protocol violation, knowledge of violations, and level of concern for COVID-19. Multiple linear regression models determined correlates of outcome variables. Covariates included gender, race, residence, area of study, class, and knowledge of someone with a positive COVID-19 test.

RESULTS

Overall, students agreed with protective measures (equivalent to higher scores). In adjusted linear models, females (versus males) had significantly higher scores for protocol effectiveness (self) (p < 0.001), consequences of protocol violation (p = 0.005), and concern about COVID-19 (p < 0.001). Asian/Pacific Islander (versus white) had significantly higher scores for protocol effectiveness (self) (p < 0.001), consequences of protocol violation (p = 0.008), and concern about COVID-19 (p = 0.001). Graduate students (versus freshman) had higher scores for protocol effectiveness (self) (p < 0.001), protocol adherence (self) (p = 0.004) and concern about COVID-19 (p < 0.001). In contrast, participants who had a positive COVID-19 test had significantly lower scores for protocol effectiveness (self) (p = 0.02), protocol adherence (self) (p = 0.004), and consequences of protocol violation (p = 0.008).

CONCLUSION

Overall, females, Asian/Pacific Islanders, and graduate students were more likely to agree with or adhere to COVID-19 prevention guidelines but those who tested positive for COVID-19 were less likely to do so. These results may inform future prevention efforts.
