Abstract
Effective management of cattle infected with Johne's Disease (JD) is crucial to minimizing transmission and within-herd prevalence. Within Great Britain (GB), the voluntary National Johne's Management Plan (NJMP) requires farmers and a certified vet to conduct a risk assessment to determine the herd risk, examine the herd JD status and formulate a management plan. Individual milk ELISA tests for JD antibodies are widely used to monitor infection. The JD Tracker application, available within the dairy data management software InterHerd+ and other web-based environments, is being used by farmers and veterinarians to facilitate the practical use of milk ELISA data to aid JD-related management decisions. The JD Tracker application uses a herd's milk ELISA data to calculate a collection of 'JD parameters' that are indicative of the current JD status of the herd alongside contemporary and retrospective drivers linked to transmission and maintenance of infection. Herein, we use milk ELISA data from 154 regularly testing herds to review the temporal trends in JD parameters from 2013 to 2022. Since 2015, JD Tracker parameters have improved in these herds, most notably average test value (ATV) and within-herd prevalence (%Pos30). Trends in driver parameters suggest that farmers are progressively less likely to serve repeat test-positive (J5) cows and are more readily removing them. The data also reveal that the burden of JD is disproportionately greater in herds with higher ATV. In 2022, the 25 % of herds with the highest ATVs accounted for 42 % of positive tests and 42 % of repeat ELISA positive (J5) cows. Retrospectively, it is not possible to identify with certainty factors that directly contributed to the trends in JD parameters, but it is notable that the introduction of the NJMP was coincided with the improving JD situation. In 2019, participation in the NJMP or an equivalent scheme became mandatory for dairy farms to be compliant with the food and farms standards assurance scheme Red Tractor, with the result that JD management plans are now completed by 95 % of UK dairy farms. As far as we know, the UK is unique in its development of a tool (the JD Tracker) which adds utility to milk ELISA data using specifically designed JD parameters. Anticipated further work includes the development of a national database of JD testing herds and application of the JD Tracker at national scale to enable more comprehensive industry-level monitoring of JD within GB dairy farms.

Abstract
While paratuberculosis control has been studied for over a century, knowledge gaps still exist regarding the uptake and efficacy of control programmes. This narrative review aims to summarise studies on control programmes presented at the IDF ParaTB Fora in 2021 and 2022 and the International Colloquium on Paratuberculosis in 2022. Studies were grouped by topic as follows: successful control, field studies, education and extension, voluntary and compulsory control programmes, and surveillance. Various Map control programmes resulted in a decreasing animal and herd level Map prevalence. Long-term stakeholder commitment, stable funding, involvement of herd veterinarians and incentives for farmers to participate were shown to be pivotal for long-term success. Control measures focused on vertical and calf-to-calf transmission may improve Map control in infected herds. Easy-to-capture visualisation of surveillance test results to inform participants on the progress of Map control in their herds was developed. The probability of freedom from disease and estimated within-herd prevalence were identified as good candidates for categorisation of herds to support low-risk trade of cattle. Results of the surveillance schemes may inform genetic selection for resistance to Map infection. In conclusion, successful paratuberculosis control is feasible at both the herd and country level provided that crucial prerequisites are met.

Abstract
This study investigated the intra- and inter-herd diversity of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) isolates from four goat herds in Thuringia (Germany) that were affected by paratuberculosis for several years. The main focus was on the characterization and distribution of genotypes among animals and the environment of goat herd 1. This study included 196 isolates from the feces of 121 infected goats, various tissues from 13 clinically diseased goats, 29 environmental samples from herd 1, and additionally, 22 isolates of different origin from herds 2 to 4. The isolates, sampled between 2018 and 2022, were genotyped using short-sequence-repeat (SSR) analysis, mycobacterial-interspersed repetitive units-variable-number tandem repeat (MIRU-VNTR) analysis, and a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-based assay for phylogenetic grouping. All the isolates belonged to the MAP-C group. In herd 1, one predominant genotype was determined, while two other genotypes were identified very rarely and only in fecal and environmental samples. One of three further genotypes was found in each of herds 2 to 4. The assignment of genotypes to different phylogenetic clades suggested six different infection strains. The results indicated no epidemiological links between the examined herds. Based on the current MAP genotyping data from Germany, possible sources of infection are MAP-contaminated barns previously used by infected cattle and the purchase of sub-clinically infected goats.

Abstract
In a cross-sectional study, it was identified that three regions in Germany differed with respect to their herd-level prevalence for paratuberculosis in dairy cattle. In the study presented here, the same farms were analyzed to identify those components of biosecurity and farm management with the highest impact on Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis (MAP) introduction and establishment in a farm. Hence, the data analyzes included 183, 170 and 104 herds from the study regions north, east and south, respectively. A herd was considered MAP-positive if at least one fecal environmental sample was positive. Twenty-six different possible risk factors from five different components of biosecurity and farm management were analyzed. We show that the average management of calf feeding increased the odds for a MAP-positive farm by 5.22 times (95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.25-21.83). With every 100-cow increase in farm size, the risk for a farm to test MAP-positive increased by 1.94 times (CI = 1.15-3.27), 1.14 times (CI = 1.02-1.27) and 5.53 times (CI = 0.44-68.97) in the north, east and south study regions, respectively. Furthermore, the purchase of cattle with an unknown MAP status increased the risk for a farm testing MAP-positive by 2.86-fold (CI = 1.45-5.67). Our results demonstrate that herd size, unknown MAP status of the purchased cattle and different aspects of calf feeding play an important role in the MAP status of a farm and should be in focus in regions with different MAP between-herd prevalence. Additionally, farm individual risk patterns should be identified during (veterinary) biosecurity consultancy.

Abstract
The Thuringian Johne's Disease (JD) Control Program provides a voluntary approach to JD control in Thuringia, a federal state of Germany. The program has three objectives: reduce the level of infection when present; reduce the spread of JD to uninfected herds; and facilitate the certification and protection of herds that are non-suspect with respect to JD. The program offers pathways for the management of affected herds and for certification of herds with continuing negative tests. After the control stage (CS), a certification stage of at least 3 consecutive years with continuing negative results in the annual whole-herd test has to be passed until a herd can be certified as 'non-suspect' with respect to JD. This study focused on calf mortality in relation to JD herd status. In a longitudinal study, the association of annual calf mortality rate of a total of 93 dairy herds (13 'non-suspect'; 26 in control stage; 54 not enrolled) over 10 consecutive years with JD herd status was investigated using a generalized mixed linear model with repeated measures. Non-suspect herds had a lower calf mortality rate compared with other farms. We conclude that establishing JD control measures lowers the calf mortality rate.
