Abstract
Background/Objectives: Education on antibiotic use has the potential to positively shape the practices and perspectives of future professionals. Assessing awareness levels of antibiotic resistance among university students is, therefore, critical, as they represent a vital demographic capable of influencing public health outcomes, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Methods: This cross-sectional study employed the World Health Organization's Antibiotic Resistance: Multi-Country Public Awareness Survey, which examines demographics, antibiotic use, knowledge, perspectives, and sources of information. A total of 922 surveys were collected from students across various disciplines at two universities in Greater Guayaquil. Results: Most participants reported obtaining antibiotics through healthcare professionals, adhering to proper usage instructions, and purchasing them primarily from pharmacies. However, only 56% of the responses were correct, with many students incorrectly associating antibiotic use with conditions where they are typically ineffective. Despite these gaps, the students expressed positive attitudes toward proposed measures to address antibiotic resistance. While the participants demonstrated familiarity with terms related to antibiotic resistance and identified doctors and educators as their main sources of information, educational campaigns were not widely recognized as important. Conclusions: These findings evidence knowledge gaps among an essential group, suggesting the need for targeted health programs, preventive strategies, and educational initiatives to combat misinformation regarding antimicrobial resistance.

Abstract
Background Sepsis management in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) presents a significant challenge within contemporary healthcare. The primary challenge lies in ensuring the timely and appropriate utilization of antibiotics. Inappropriate antibiotic use in sepsis management can result in a multitude of adverse outcomes. There has been insufficient focus on thoroughly understanding and resolving the issues related to the improper application of antibiotics in sepsis treatment by physicians and pharmacists. This gap in research is concerning, considering its potential implications for patient outcomes and public health. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) among physicians and pharmacists toward antibiotic use in sepsis. Methods This web-based cross-sectional study was conducted at Shanxi Bethune Hospital between June 2023 and October 2023. A self-designed questionnaire was developed to collect demographic information of physicians and pharmacists, and to assess their knowledge, attitudes and practices toward antibiotic use in sepsis. Results A total of 200 valid questionnaires were collected. Among the participants, 115 (57.5%) were female and 118 (59%) had experience with ICU patient management. The mean knowledge, attitudes and practices scores were 10.2 ± 1.14 (possible range: 0-12), 45.88 ± 4.00 (possible range: 10-50) and 48.38 ± 5.84 (possible range: 11-55), respectively. Multivariate logistic regression showed that attitudes (OR = 1.59, 95%CI: 1.34-1.87, p < 0.001), work experience of 15 years and above (OR = 7.17, 95%CI: 2.33-22.0, p = 0.001) were independently associated with proactive practices. For physicians, the structural equation model (SEM) demonstrated that attitudes directly affects practices, as indicated by a path coefficient of 0.91 (p < 0.001). For pharmacist, SEM showed that knowledge directly affect attitudes, with a path coefficient of 0.75 (p < 0.024), moreover, attitudes directly affect practices, with a path coefficient of 0.87 (p < 0.001). Conclusion The findings revealed that physicians and pharmacists have sufficient knowledge, active attitudes, and proactive practices toward the antibiotic use in sepsis. Nonetheless, the findings also reveal the persistence of certain misconceptions, alongside notable shortcomings in both attitudes and practices. Comprehensive training programs are imperative for enhancing the practices of physicians and pharmacists in this field.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Understanding awareness of antibiotics is crucial in identifying the attitudes of people which could subsequently help shape campaigns and policies addressing this problem. The study aimed to explore awareness of antibiotics use and antibiotic resistance among faculty and staff at the medical institution. METHODOLOGY All the study participants (faculty & staff) were asked to complete the survey. The survey consisted of questions ranging from knowledge and use of antibiotics to knowledge about antibiotic resistance. Ninety participants responded for the quantitative survey. After the questionnaire administration, in-depth interviews were conducted with subgroups of faculty, technicians, and administrative staff. The researchers employed a purposive sampling strategy. Around 43 participants volunteered to participate in this interview. RESULTS The results showed that 92% of participants reported taking antibiotics, with the majority receiving them from licensed medical providers, while a smaller respondent (12.6%) self-medicated. The concept of "antibiotic resistance" was the most widely recognized, with 47.78% of participants indicating awareness, typically gained from healthcare personnel. The in-depth interviews revealed that the faculty group had the strongest basic knowledge about antibiotics and resistance. When it comes to consequences of ABR, participants mentioned the risk of repeated infection and spread of stronger strains of bacteria that might be difficult to treat soon. The most important suggestion provided by most participants was that the antibiotics should be taken only with a doctor's prescription and consumed for appropriate duration as suggested by the doctor. CONCLUSIONS Although the study revealed a strong understanding of antibiotics, awareness regarding antibiotic resistance remained low. The findings emphasize the importance of enhancing communication skills among health professionals and implementing stewardship programs to promote safe antibiotic use and raise awareness about antibiotic resistance.

Abstract
Background Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the biggest threats to global public health systems. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes and practice about AMR, antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) and multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria. Methods A web-based questionnaire survey was conducted among the residents of Isfahan University of Medical Sciences from May to November 2023. Data analysis was done using SPSS version 24.0 software. Results Overall, 400 out of 450 medical residents responded to the questionnaire, giving a response rate of 88.9%. The participants' ages ranged from 26 to 54 years, and the majority were female (227/400 56.8%). Average scores for knowledge, attitudes, and practices were 53.70 ± 15.88, 36.97 ± 5.89 and 24.69 ± 4.24, respectively. In terms of knowledge, only 26.8% had heard the term "ASPs" and knew what it was. Most incorrect answers appeared to the treatment of infection caused by MDR bacteria including ESBL-producing Escherichia coli (27.8%) and carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (30.8%), as well as the atypical bacteria (45.5%). Approximately, 50 and 71.7% said they had received no specific training in the fields of microbiological sampling methods and the appropriate time to prescribe antibiotics, respectively. Surprisingly, regarding practice, 81.8% of the respondents stated that antibiotics are used to treat flu or the common cold. Conclusion Residents considered their training on important issues including ASPs, MDR bacteria and the spectrum of antibiotics insufficient. This result highlights the need for targeted training interventions about antibiotic prescription in the curriculum at the university with more emphasis on ASPs to limit the development of resistance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Most respiratory tract infections (RTIs) are viral and do not require antibiotics, yet their inappropriate prescription is common in low-income settings due to factors like inadequate diagnostic facilities. This misuse contributes to antibiotic resistance. We determined antibiotic prescription patterns and associated factors among outpatients with RTIs in Jinja City, Uganda. METHODS We conducted a retrospective observational study that involved data abstraction of all patient records with a diagnosis of RTIs from the outpatient registers for the period of June 1, 2022, to May 31, 2023. An interviewer-administered questionnaire capturing data on prescribing practices and factors influencing antibiotic prescription was administered to drug prescribers in the health facilities where data were abstracted and who had prescribed from June 1, 2022, to May 31, 2023. We used modified Poisson regression analysis to identify factors associated with antibiotic prescription. RESULTS Out of 1,669 patient records reviewed, the overall antibiotic prescription rate for respiratory tract infections (RTIs) was 79.8%. For specific RTIs, rates were 71.4% for acute bronchitis, 93.3% for acute otitis media, and 74.4% for acute upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs). Factors significantly associated with antibiotic prescription included access to Uganda Clinical Guidelines (Adjusted prevalence ratio [aPR] = 0.61, 95% CI = 0.01-0.91) and Integrated Management of Childhood Illness guidelines (aPR = 0.14, 95% CI = 0.12-0.87, P = 0.002), which reduced the likelihood of prescription. Prescribers without training on antibiotic use were more likely to prescribe antibiotics (aPR = 3.55, 95% CI = 1.92-3.98). Patients with common cold (aPR = 0.06, 95% CI = 0.04-0.20) and cough (aPR = 0.11, 95% CI = 0.09-0.91) were less likely to receive antibiotics compared to those with pneumonia. CONCLUSION The study reveals a high rate of inappropriate antibiotic prescription for RTIs, highlighting challenges in adherence to treatment guidelines. This practice not only wastes national resources but also could contribute to the growing threat of antibiotic resistance. Targeted interventions, such as enforcing adherence to prescription guidelines, could improve prescription practices and reduce antibiotic misuse in this low-income setting.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global problem and an important consequence of inappropriate use of antimicrobial agents (AMAs). Studies have observed that a lack of awareness of AMR among healthcare professionals as well as consumers results in the irrational use of AMAs, a significant driver of AMR. MATERIALS AND METHODS This educational intervention study was undertaken to assess community awareness regarding AMAs and AMR and to educate them. Ten volunteer students from II MBBS were made aware of AMR, its impact and measures to reduce resistance through a lecture by Pharmacology faculty. Students interacted with 220 family representatives in the community to assess their knowledge about AMAs and AMR using a 15-item pre-validated questionnaire. Charts, videos, and role-play were used to impart knowledge about the rational use of AMAs, AMR, and its consequences. Participants' understanding was ensured with feedback taken on Lickert scale. RESULTS Students interacted with the study participants and found that most were aware of the term 'antibiotic' (90.8%), but 67% were clueless regarding antibiotic resistance. The purpose of AMA use was not adequately known to 43% as they mentioned using these for diarrhea, viral fever, cough, cold, and sore throat. AMAs were purchased by 40% of participants as OTC medicine, whereas Azithromycin and Amoxicillin were the AMAs they could remember by name. The reasons for buying OTC antibiotics were the inconvenience of doctors' clinic timings, unaffordable consultation charges, and easy antibiotic availability. Students also learned about communication etiquette during this community interaction. This educational intervention proved helpful as the participants agreed that the unnecessary use of AMAs makes them ineffective and AMR is preventable by simple measures. CONCLUSION A multifactorial approach involving prescribers, regulatory Government authorities and general public is needed to control irrational use of antimicrobials. Timely interventions are necessary to increase the awareness of AMR in the community.

Abstract
Recent European-wide data place Cyprus and Greece in the highest positions of total antimicrobial consumption. While this level of consumption might be partly attributed to the high rates of infections due to MDR bacteria in these countries, several other reasons should be sought to help apply local measures, to decrease inappropriate and excess antimicrobial use. The present viewpoint aims to provide a roadmap for interventions, by briefly discussing the various factors that underlie antimicrobial use and prescribing practices in Greece and Cyprus.

Abstract
Bacterial infections in the health-care sector and social environments have been linked to the Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection, a type of bacteria that has remained an international health risk since the 1960s. From mild colonization to a deadly invasive disease with an elevated mortality rate, the illness can present in many different forms. A fractional-order dynamic model of MRSA infection developed using real data for computational and modeling analysis on the north side of Cyprus is presented in this paper. Initially, we tested that the suggested model had a positively invariant region, bounded solutions, and uniqueness for the biological feasibility of the model. We study the equilibria of the model and assess the expression for the most significant threshold parameter, called the basic reproduction number (ℛ0). The reproductive number's parameters are also subjected to sensitivity analysis through mathematical methods and simulations. Additionally, utilizing the power law kernel and the fixed-point approach, the existence, uniqueness, and generalized Ulam-Hyers-Rassias stability are presented. Chaos Control was used to regulate the linear responses approach to bring the system to stabilize according to its points of equilibrium, taking into account a fractional-order system with a managed design where solutions are bound in the feasible domain. Finally, numerical simulations demonstrating the effects of different parameters on MRSA infection are used to investigate the impact of the fractional operator on the generalized form of the power law kernel through a two-step Newton polynomial method. The impact of fractional orders is emphasized in the study so that the numerical solutions support the importance of these orders on MRSA infection. With the application of fractional order, the significance of cognizant antibiotic usage for MRSA infection is verified.

Global antimicrobial resistance and use surveillance system (GLASS 2022): Investigating the relationship between antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial consumption data across the participating countries. Abstract
For the first time since 2015, the World Health Organization's (WHO) global Antimicrobial Resistance and Use Surveillance (GLASS) featured both global reports for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and antimicrobial consumption (AMC) data in its annual reports. In this study we investigated the relationship of AMR with AMC within participating countries reported in the GLASS 2022 report. Our analysis found a statistically significant correlation between beta-lactam/cephalosporin and fluoroquinolones consumption and AMR to these antimicrobials associated with bloodstream E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae among the participating countries (P<0.05). We observed that for every 1 unit increase in defined daily dose DDD of beta-lactam/cephalosporins and quinolone consumptions among the countries, increased the recoveries of bloodstream-associated beta-lactam/cephalosporins-resistant E. coli/Klebsiella spp. by 11-22% and quinolone-resistant E. coli/Klebsiella spp. by 31-40%. When we compared the antimicrobial consumptions between the antimicrobial ATC (Alphanumeric codes developed by WHO) groups and countries, we observed a statistically significant higher daily consumption of beta-lactam-penicillins (J01C, DDD difference range: 5.23-8.13) and cephalosporins (J01D, DDD difference range: 2.57-5.13) compared to other antimicrobial groups among the countries (adjusted for multiple comparisons using Tukey's method). Between the participating countries, we observed a statistically significant higher daily consumption of antimicrobial groups in Iran (DDD difference range: 3.63-4.84) and Uganda (DDD difference range: 3.79-5.01) compared to other participating countries (adjusted for multiple comparisons using Tukey's method). Understanding AMC and how it relates to AMR at the global scale is critical in the global AMR policy development and implementation of global antimicrobial stewardship.

Abstract
Background Relebactam, previously known as MK-7655, is currently being tested in combination with imipenem as a class A and class C β-lactamase inhibitor, including KPC from Klebsiella pneumoniae. Objective The objective of the current study was to evaluate the activity of imipenem/relebactam against gram-negative bacilli. Methods After applying exclusion and inclusion criteria, 72 articles with full texts that describe the prevalence of imipenem/relebactam resistance were chosen for the meta-analysis and systematic review. Articles published between January 2015 and February 2023 were surveyed. The systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Scopus. Results The pooled estimation of 282,621 sample isolates revealed that the prevalence rate of imipenem/relebactam resistance is roughly 14.6% (95% CI, 0.116%-0.182%). Conclusions The findings of this analysis show that imipenem/relebactam resistance is rare in the majority of developed countries. Given that relebactam has proven to restore the activity of imipenem against current clinical isolates, further research into imipenem/relebactam is necessary.

Abstract
(1) Background: Antibiotic resistance is a serious health issue, and raising public awareness of it is crucial to combating it. This study aimed to assess the socio-demographic factors associated with knowledge of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance in Malaysia. (2) Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out between April 2022 and March 2023. Malaysian adults aged ≥18 years old and able to understand English or Malay were recruited. During data collection, the WHO questionnaire "Antibiotic Resistance, Multi-Country Public Awareness Survey" was used. Data were collected across 14 states in Malaysia. (3) Results: A total of 517 participants completed the questionnaire. Most participants were females (67.9%), aged 30-49 (46%), and from central Malaysia (69.8%). Most participants (98.5%) reported taking antibiotics. A misconception presented was that sore throats, fevers, colds, and flu can be treated with antibiotics. A total of 58.8% of participants had high knowledge of antibiotic usage (scores 12-15), while 64% had high knowledge of antibiotic resistance (scores 9-14). Findings indicate that increasing age, income, and education were associated with higher knowledge. (4) Conclusions: This study highlights the knowledge deficiency of antibiotic resistance among Malaysians. Educational programs should engage a younger and lower socio-economic population to increase awareness.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAPs) profile on bacterial resistance and antibiotic in the general population of Medellín. MATERIAL AND METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted from September to December 2022, with 902 participants selected through stratified sampling with proportional allocation of different sectors of the city. The KAP scale was developed through a literature review, elimination of duplicate items, validity assessment, and reliability evaluation using Cronbach's alpha. Each item was presented with absolute and relative frequencies on a Likert scale, with a total score ranging from 0 to 100, where a higher score indicates better knowledge, attitudes, and practices. Comparisons were made using Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis H, and linear regression. RESULTS The knowledge score median was 73.3 (IQR 63.3-93.3), with 36.9% reporting that antibiotics can be stopped once symptoms improve and 26.1% considering them as analgesics or antipyretics. The attitudes score was 83.3 (IQR 73.3-93.3), with 95.3% expressing concern about the impact on their health or that of their family and over 90% agreeing that more information is needed on antibiotic resistance. The practice score was the lowest at 63.9 (IQR 50-75), with 48% having been prescribed antibiotics at the pharmacy and 42.6% taking them to treat flu symptoms. Economic status (β 2.645), education in health-related areas (β 6.224), gender (β 2.892), and education level (β 3.257) determined knowledge. Knowledge (β 0.387), gender (β 2.807), and education level (β 0.686) influenced attitudes, but practices were only determined by Knowledge (β 0.084) attitudes (β 0.552) and age group (β 2.858). CONCLUSIONS Knowledge about antibiotics and bacterial resistance does not significantly influence the practices of the population. Therefore, interventions aimed at improving knowledge need to be reconsidered as they may not contribute to the appropriate use of antibiotics and prevention of resistance to these drugs.

Abstract
This study investigated the knowledge, attitudes and behaviours towards antibiotics among the general public living in the Republic of Cyprus (RoC) and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) by using an online questionnaire. Differences were examined using independent samples t-tests, chi-square tests, Mann-Whitney U tests and Spearman's rho. In total, 519 individuals completed the survey (RoC = 267, TRNC = 252), with an average age of 32.7, and 52.2% were female. Most citizens correctly identified paracetamol (TRNC = 93.7%, RoC = 53.9%) and ibuprofen (TRNC = 70.2%, RoC = 47.6%) as non-antibiotic medications. A substantial proportion thought antibiotics could treat viral infections, such as a cold (TRNC = 16.3%, RoC = 40.8%) or the flu (TRNC = 21.4%, RoC = 50.4%). Most participants understood that bacteria can become resistant to antibiotics (TRNC = 71.4%, RoC = 64.4%), that unnecessary use can lead to drug ineffectiveness (TRNC = 86.1%, RoC = 72.3%) and that they should always complete the course of antibiotics (TRNC = 85.7%, RoC = 64.0%). Positive attitudes towards antibiotics correlated negatively with knowledge in both samples, indicating that the more people know, the less positive their attitudes towards their use. The RoC appears to have tighter controls of over-the-counter (OTC) sales of antibiotics than TRNC. This study reveals that different communities can have varying levels of knowledge, attitudes and perceptions about antibiotic use. Tighter enforcement of the OTC regulations, educational efforts and media campaigns are needed for enhancing prudent antibiotic use on the island.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The present study aims to investigate the knowledge and attitudes towards antibiotics among students studying medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy at the Near East University in Northern Cyprus. The influence of personality characteristics on antibiotic use were also evaluated, in order to identify predictors of antibiotic misuse. METHODS Students were enrolled in the study during the 2020-2021 academic year. Study participants were asked to complete an online questionnaire that measured their knowledge, attitudes and practice (KAP) towards antibiotic use and antibiotic resistance. The KAP of students from the three faculties were compared using Kruskall-Wallis H statistics, Mann-Whitney U statistics, and Spearman's rho. The influence of personality traits on the propensity to use antibiotics without a prescription, as well as their attitudes and knowledge of antibiotic use and misuse, were also investigated. RESULTS In total, 314 students completed the survey, 52% of which were female. The mean age of the students was 20.5 years. The results showed that among the different disciplines, medical students were significantly more knowledgeable about pharmacological agents, compared to dentistry and pharmacy students, while pharmacy students were more knowledgeable about the effectiveness of antibiotics against different pathogenic microorganisms. All student groups were aware of how antibiotic resistance develops and their role as healthcare personnel in implementing measures against resistance. Appropriate antibiotic use among the student community correlated with study year, highlighting the importance of knowledge and education in the prevention of antibiotic resistance. Personality traits were found to be a contributing factor in students' tendency to use antibiotics without a prescription. CONCLUSION This study demonstrates the importance of conveying knowledge about antimicrobials in the education programmes of future dentists, pharmacists and physicians.

Abstract
Background Inappropriate use of antibiotics is among the major causes of the global emergency of antibiotic resistance among children. The problem of inappropriate use of antibiotics among children is of special concern because they are still developing immunological systems, hence they are susceptible to many infectious diseases. As such, they receive a considerable disproportional amount of antibiotics which exposes them to antibiotic resistance. This study explored the lived experiences of caregivers of children under the age of five years on the use of antibiotics at Zomba central hospital. Objective The main aim of this study was to explore the lived experiences of caregivers of children under the age of five years on antibiotic usage at Zomba Central Hospital, Zomba-Malawi. Methodology This was a descriptive qualitative study with a phenomenological approach to explore the lived experience of caregivers of paediatric patients on antibiotic usage from May 2019 to July 2020. The study used interview guides to conduct in-depth interviews with 16 caregivers and purposive sampling was used to select the participants from the children’s ward. All interviews were audio-recorded and qualitative data was transcribed verbatim and thematically analysed manually to extract major themes and concepts on the subject matter. Results Caregivers had little knowledge about antibiotic use and its resistance. most caregivers use the antibiotics inappropriately through self-medication, use of left-over antibiotics, buying antibiotics without prescription, and sharing of antibiotics. Conclusion Based on the findings of this study, investment in public awareness and organising community-led interventions in antibiotic use related information is key to improve the quality use of antibiotics. The Government should focus on promoting interventions that lessen the indiscriminate use of antibiotics among the caregivers. Stringent laws need to be enforced by the government to restrict the access of antibiotics to parents without a prescription.

Abstract
Self-medication with antibiotics (SMA) has become considerably common in developing countries, which is a critical factor for driving antibiotic resistance. Individuals involved in SMA generally do not have adequate knowledge regarding the appropriate use, indications and dosage of these drugs. The objective of the present study was to investigate population SMA practices, knowledge and sociodemographic factors associated with SMA in Islamabad, Pakistan. The study adopted a cross-sectional methodology and data collection was performed through an anonymous, structured and pilot-tested questionnaire, which was interview-administered. Inferential statistics and multivariate logistic regression were performed. Out of 480 participants, 55.6% (n = 267) were male with a mean age of 37.1 ± 10.1 years; the total prevalence of SMA was 32.5%. Ciprofloxacin (42.9%) was the most commonly used antibiotic to treat coughs or colds, a runny nose, flu or sore throat, diarrhea or fevers, which were relevant reasons for SMA. Findings from multivariate logistic regression showed that predictors of SMA were: male gender (95% CI: 0.383–1.005), age (95% CI: 0.317–0.953) and highest level of education (95% CI: 0.961–0.649). Despite reasonable access to healthcare facilities, people are still obtaining antibiotics without prescription, bypassing diagnostic and consultative healthcare services. Thus, the government must implement strict healthcare policies to restrict the sale of antibiotics without prescriptions, while at the same time, targeted public awareness campaigns about the proper use of antibiotics are also required.

Abstract
Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) is a common bacterium whose drug-resistant can cause surgical failures and incurable infections in hospital patients. Thus, how to reverse or delay the resistance induction has become a great challenge for development anti-resistant drug. Recently, the combination of nanomaterial-loaded antibiotics with photothermal therapy showed the efficient anti-bacteria ability under low dosage of antibiotics. In this work, a nanocomposite of HMPB NPs with inherent photothermal therapy capability was used to eradicate K. pneumoniae after loading with Ofloxacin, an antibiotic against K. pneumoniae in vitro and in vivo. The nanocomplexes named as Ofloxacin@HMPB@HA NPs showed higher effect against K. pneumoniae by destroying cell integrity and inducing ATP leakage with the assistance of laser irradiation, compared with sole Ofloxacin@HMPB@HA NPs or laser irradiation. Surgical wound infection assay further demonstrated the efficient killing K. pneumoniae and promoting the formation of new tissues, as well, which was reflected by the rapid healing of surgical wound. In summary, these results indicate the great potential of this combinational tactic based on Ofloxacin@HMPB@HA NPs for preventing the failure caused by K. pneumoniae infection. Abstract
Poultry farming represents Peru’s primary food animal production industry, where antimicrobial growth promoters are still commonly used, exerting selective pressure on intestinal microbial populations. Consumption and direct animal-to-human transmission have been reported, and farmworkers are at high risk of colonization with resistant bacteria. We conducted a cross-sectional survey among 54 farmworkers to understand their current antimicrobial resistance (AMR) awareness in Ica, Peru. To gain insight into the potential work-related risk of exposure to bacteria, we also measured the AMR rates in Escherichia coli isolated among 50 broiler chickens. Farmworkers were unaware of antimicrobial resistance (31.5%) or antibiotic resistance (16.7%) terms. Almost two-thirds (61%) consumed antibiotics during the previous month, and only 42.6% received a prescription from a healthcare professional. A total of 107 E. coli chicken isolates were obtained, showing a high frequency of multidrug-resistant (89.7%) and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) production (71.9%). Among ESBL-producer isolates, 84.4% carried the blaCTX-M gene. Results identified gaps in knowledge that reflect the need for interventions to increase antimicrobial awareness among poultry farmworkers. The high AMR rates among E. coli isolates highlight the need to reduce antimicrobial use in poultry farms. Our findings reveal a critical need for effective policy development and antimicrobial stewardship interventions in poultry production in Ica, Peru.

The Associations between Poor Antibiotic and Antimicrobial Resistance Knowledge and Inappropriate Antibiotic Use in the General Population Are Modified by Age. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Understanding factors influencing inappropriate antibiotic use can guide the design of interventions to improve antibiotic practices and reduce antimicrobial resistance (AMR). METHODS A nationally representative cross-sectional survey (N = 2004) was conducted between November 2020 and January 2021. Knowledge of antibiotic use and AMR using the World Health Organization's Multi-Country AMR Survey questionnaire, and antibiotic practices were examined. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to identify factors associated with inappropriate antibiotic use and examine effect measure modifications. RESULTS After adjusting for potential confounding, poor knowledge of antibiotic use was associated with a 3x increased odds of inappropriate antibiotic use in adults aged ≥50 years (aOR 3.11, 95% CI [2.24-4.32]), 5× increased odds in those aged 35-49 years (aOR 4.88, 95% CI [3.32-7.16]), and 7× increased odds in those aged 21-34 years (aOR 6.58, 95% CI [4.19-10.33]). While there was no statistically significant association in adults aged ≥50 years, poor knowledge of AMR increased the odds of inappropriate antibiotic use by 4 times in adults aged 35-49 years (aOR 3.73, 95% CI [1.53-9.11]) and 5 times in those aged 21-34 years (aOR 4.90, 95% CI [1.84-13.02]). CONCLUSIONS Targeted educational interventions for specific age groups are needed in conjunction with empowering the public with knowledge of antibiotic use and AMR.

Abstract
Background Lack of knowledge and awareness on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) can result in irrational use of antibiotics, which is one of the major drivers of AMR. One goal of the Thailand National Strategic Plan on AMR (2017-2021) is a 20% increase in public knowledge and awareness of antibiotic use and AMR by 2021. This study assesses antibiotic use, level of knowledge and awareness of antibiotic use and AMR and the factors associated with their knowledge and awareness in the Thai population in 2019. It compares findings with a similar national survey in 2017. Methods An AMR module was integrated into the Health and Welfare Survey, a biennial national household survey conducted by the National Statistical Office since 2017. The 2019 survey took place in March, through face-to-face interviews with 27,900 Thai adults aged 15 years or above who participated in the survey and compares 2019 findings with those from 2017. Results One month prior to the survey, 6.3% of population reported use of antibiotics (reduced from 7.9% to 2017), of which 98.1% received antibiotics through healthcare professionals and almost half (43.2%) for flu symptoms. During the last 12 months, 21.5% of Thai adults received information on the appropriate use of antibiotics and AMR (increased from 17.8% to 2017); mostly through health professionals (82.7%). On knowledge, 24.3% of adults gave correct answers to more than three out of six statements (three true and three false statements) (increased from 23.7% to 2017). The overall mean score of awareness of appropriate antibiotic use and AMR is 3.3 out of total score of 5. Conclusions Although progress was made on knowledge and awareness between 2017 and 2019, certain practices, such as use of antibiotics for flu symptoms and receiving information about antibiotic use and AMR, are inappropriate and inadequate. These findings require significant action, notably strengthening health professionals’ ability to prescribe and dispense antibiotics appropriately and effective communication with patients. The government should promote specific information on rational use of antibiotics and AMR to specific target groups.

Abstract
The study aims were to investigate knowledge and attitudes towards antibiotics and antibiotic resistance (ABR), and to assess the extent of practices regarding antibiotic consumption and Internet use among university students in Southern Italy. Data were collected through an anonymous online questionnaire from 1 April to 14 April 2021. The eligibility criteria for the study were: (i) age between 18 and 30 years and (ii) registered as an undergraduate student at the university. Among the 1051 sampled students, only 7.4% gave the correct answer to all 7 knowledge statements about antibiotics and ABR. The main determinants of knowledge were being younger and attending to medical or life sciences majors. Almost two-thirds took an antibiotic in the previous 12 months and 24.6% reported having self-medicated with antibiotics. More than half of the sample used the Internet to seek information about antibiotics and/or ABR, and it was the strongest predictor of self-medication with antibiotics. The study findings highlighted gaps in knowledge, considerable antibiotic consumption, sometimes without prescription, together with an extensive Internet use to seek health-related information. To facilitate the health-promoting use of the Internet in conjunction with health care providers, we could make young adults aware of the rational use of antibiotics.

Abstract
The curriculum of medical schools includes courses on antibiotics. Therefore, it is worth exploring information related to the knowledge and attitudes about antibiotics. In this cross-sectional study the questionnaire was administered to the undergraduates in two phases, before and after attending the basic medical science courses. The data were collected on demographic variables, source of antibiotics, level of knowledge, and changes in attitude statements. Data analysis was implemented using SPSS. The mean age of participants was 19.87 and 20.15 in phases I and II, respectively. Most of the participants’ parents had education at the university level and a monthly income above 15,000 SAR. Generally, students had good knowledge and attitude about antibiotics. A significant improvement in students’ knowledge in phase-II was noticed in “level of knowledge” (p-value = 0.044), “paracetamol is considered an antibiotic” (p-value < 0.001) and “overuse of antibiotics can cause antibiotics resistance” (p-value = 0.003). The overall knowledge and attitude of pre-professional students were good in both phases, but their attitude did not improve at a significant level in phase-II. There is a need to put more focus on antimicrobial therapy in their training.
