Abstract
Zizania latifolia is an aquatic and medicinal plant with a long history of development in China and the East Asian region. The smut fungus "Ustilago esculenta" parasitizes Z. latifolia and induces culm expansion to form a vegetable named Jiaobai, which has a unique taste and nutritional attributes. However, the postharvest quality of water bamboo shoots is still a big challenge for farmers and merchants. This paper traced the origin, development process, and morphological characteristics of Z. latifolia. Subsequently, the compilation of the primary nutrients and bioactive substances are presented in context to their effects on ecology a postharvest storage and preservation methods. Furthermore, the industrial, environmental, and material science applications of Z. latifolia in the fields of industry were discussed. Finally, the primary objective of the review proposes future directions for research to support the development of Z. latifolia industry and aid in maximizing its value. To sum up, Z. latifolia, aside from its potential as material it can be utilized to make different productions and improve the existing applications. This paper provides an emerging strategy for researchers undertaking Z. latifolia.

Abstract
Long-term hepatic damage is associated with human morbidity and mortality owing to numerous pathogenic factors. A variety of studies have focused on improving liver health using natural products and herbal medicines. We aimed to investigate the effect of enzyme-treated Zizania latifolia ethanol extract (ETZL), which increases the content of tricin via enzymatic hydrolysis, for 8 weeks on liver-related outcomes, lipid metabolism, antioxidant activity, and fatigue compared to a placebo. Healthy Korean adult males aged 19-60 years were randomized into ETZL treatment and placebo groups, and alcohol consumption was 24.96 and 28.64 units/week, respectively. Alanine transaminase, a blood marker associated with liver cell injury, significantly decreased after 8 weeks compared to the baseline in the ETZL treatment group (p = 0.004). After 8 weeks, the treatment group showed significant changes in the levels of high-density lipoprotein and hepatic steatosis index compared to the baseline (p = 0.028 and p = 0.004, respectively). ETZL treatment tended to reduce antioxidant-activity-related factors, total antioxidant status, and malondialdehyde, but there was no significant difference. In the multidimensional fatigue scale, ETZL treatment showed a significant reduction in general fatigue and total-fatigue-related values after 8 weeks compared to the baseline (p = 0.012 and p = 0.032, respectively). Taken together, the 8-week treatment of enzyme-treated Zizania latifolia ethanol extract demonstrated positive effects on liver-related outcomes, lipid metabolism, and mental fatigue without adverse effects on safety-related parameters.

Abstract
Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (AFLD) is characterized by the accumulation of lipids in liver cells owing to the metabolism of ethanol. This process leads to a decrease in the NAD+/NADH ratio and the generation of reactive oxygen species. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to investigate the role of oxidative stress in AFLD. A total of 201 eligible manuscripts were included, which revealed that animals with AFLD exhibited elevated expression of CYP2E1, decreased enzymatic activity of antioxidant enzymes, and reduced levels of the transcription factor Nrf2, which plays a pivotal role in the synthesis of antioxidant enzymes. Furthermore, animals with AFLD exhibited increased levels of lipid peroxidation markers and carbonylated proteins, collectively contributing to a weakened antioxidant defense and increased oxidative damage. The liver damage in AFLD was supported by significantly higher activity of alanine and aspartate aminotransferase enzymes. Moreover, animals with AFLD had increased levels of triacylglycerol in the serum and liver, likely due to reduced fatty acid metabolism caused by decreased PPAR-α expression, which is responsible for fatty acid oxidation, and increased expression of SREBP-1c, which is involved in fatty acid synthesis. With regard to inflammation, animals with AFLD exhibited elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including TNF-a, IL-1β, and IL-6. The heightened oxidative stress, along with inflammation, led to an upregulation of cell death markers, such as caspase-3, and an increased Bax/Bcl-2 ratio. Overall, the findings of the review and meta-analysis indicate that ethanol metabolism reduces important markers of antioxidant defense while increasing inflammatory and apoptotic markers, thereby contributing to the development of AFLD.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Panax japonicus (T. Nees) C.A. Mey. (PJ) has been used as a tonic traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for years. Based on its meridian tropism in liver, spleen, and lung, PJ was popularly used to enhance the function of these organs. It is originally recorded with detoxicant effect on binge drink in Ben Cao Gang Mu Shi Yi, a persuasive Chinese materia medica. And binge dink has a close relationship with alcoholic liver disease (ALD). Hence, it's meaningful to investigate whether PJ exerts liver protection against binge drink toxicity. AIM OF THE STUDY This investigation was carried out not only to emphasize the right recognition of total saponins from PJ (SPJ), but also to study on its sober-up effectiveness and defensive mechanism against acute alcoholic liver injury in vivo and in vitro. MATERIALS AND METHODS SPJ constituents were verified by HPLC-UV analysis. In vivo, acute alcoholic liver oxidative stress and hepatosteatosis were established by continuous ethanol gavage to C57BL/6 mice for 3 days. SPJ was pre-administered for 7 days to investigate its protective efficacy. Loss of righting reflex (LORR) assay was employed to assess anti-inebriation effect of SPJ. Transaminases levels and hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining were measured to indicate the alcoholic liver injury. Antioxidant enzymes were measured to evaluate the oxidative stress degree in liver. Measurement of hepatic lipid accumulation was based on Oil Red O staining. Levels of inflammatory cytokines were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). In vitro, HepG2 cells were treated with ethanol for 24 h, and SPJ was pre-administered for 2 h. 2,7-dichlorofluorescein diacetate (DCFH-DA) was used as a probe to indicate reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Nrf2 activation was verified by the favor of specific inhibitor, ML385. The nuclear translocation of Nrf2 was indicated with immunofluorescence analysis. Proteins expressions of related pathways were determined by Western blotting. RESULTS Oleanane-type saponins are the most abundant constituents of SPJ. In this acute model, SPJ released inebriation of mice in a dose dependent manner. It decreased levels of serum ALT and AST, and hepatic TG. Besides, SPJ inhibited CYP2E1 expression and reduced MDA level in liver, with upregulations of antioxidant enzymes GSH, SOD and CAT. p62-related Nrf2 pathway was activated by SPJ with downstream upregulations of GCLC and NQO1 in liver. AMPK-ACC/PPARα axis was upregulated by SPJ to alleviate hepatic lipidosis. Hepatic IL-6 and TNF-α levels were downregulated by SPJ, which indicated a regressive lipid peroxidation in liver. In HepG2 cells, SPJ reduced ethanol-exposed ROS generation. Activated p62-related Nrf2 pathway was verified to contribute to the alleviation of alcohol-induced oxidative stress in hepatic cells. CONCLUSION This attenuation of hepatic oxidative stress and steatosis suggested the therapeutic value of SPJ for ALD.

Abstract
This study aimed to identify and elucidate the mechanism underlying the protective effect of tricin-enriched Zizania latifolia (Z. latifolia) extract (ETZL) against free fatty acid (FFA)-induced lipid accumulation in vitro and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) induced by a high-fat diet and fructose diet (HFD/F) in vivo. ETZL treatment significantly lowered body weight gain and decreased adipose tissue, lipid, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels in HFD/F-fed mice. ETZL acted on phosphorylated acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) and anti-peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) by activating the adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway and inhibiting sterol regulatory element-binding proteins-1 (SREBP)/fatty acid synthase (FAS) signaling to inhibit de novo adipogenesis and increase fatty acid oxidation. In addition, treatment with ETZL increased nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) levels to activate the antioxidant pathway. FFA-induced oxidative stress and fatty acid accumulation in HepG2 cells confirmed the improvement in fat accumulation through the AMPK and Nrf2 pathway activities of ETZL. These results suggest that ETZL ameliorates NAFLD by regulating lipid metabolism and defending against oxidative stress via AMPK-dependent pathways.

Abstract
Wild rice (Zizania spp.), an aquatic grass belonging to the subfamily Gramineae, has a high economic value. Zizania provides food (such as grains and vegetables), a habitat for wild animals, and paper-making pulps, possesses certain medicinal values, and helps control water eutrophication. Zizania is an ideal resource for expanding and enriching a rice breeding gene bank to naturally preserve valuable characteristics lost during domestication. With the Z. latifolia and Z. palustris genomes completely sequenced, fundamental achievements have been made toward understanding the origin and domestication, as well as the genetic basis of important agronomic traits of this genus, substantially accelerating the domestication of this wild plant. The present review summarizes the research results on the edible history, economic value, domestication, breeding, omics research, and important genes of Z. latifolia and Z. palustris over the past decades. These findings broaden the collective understanding of Zizania domestication and breeding, furthering human domestication, improvement, and long-term sustainability of wild plant cultivation.

Protective Effect of Polyphenols Purified from Mallotus oblongfolius on Ethanol-Induced Gastric Mucosal Injury by Regulating Nrf2 and MAPKs Pathways. Antioxidants (Basel) 2022; 11:antiox11122452. Abstract
Mallotus oblongifolius (MO), which is rich in polyphenols, is a characteristic tea resource with medicinal value. In this study, a total of 45 polyphenolic components of MO, including narirutin, isoquercitrin, rutin and digallic acid, were identified by UPLC-Q-TOF/MS analysis. In addition, the gastroprotective effect of Mallotus oblongifolius polyphenols (MOP) on ethanol-induced gastric mucosal injury in rats was investigated. The rats received anhydrous ethanol after continuous gavage of MOP or lansoprazole for one week. In addition, the macro- and micro-damage induced by ethanol in the gastric tissue was significantly reduced after MOP pretreatment for one week. Further analysis showed that MOP prevented ethanol-induced acute gastric mucosal injury by increasing the expression of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, GSH-Px) and decreasing the expression of reactive oxygen species (ROS), lipid oxidation product (MDA) and myeloperoxidase (MPO). Meanwhile, MOP inhibited the phosphorylation of p38/ERK/JNK and promoted the activation of the Nrf2 pathway. These results suggested that MOP may be a promising therapeutic target for the prevention of ethanol-induced gastric mucosal injury by improving oxidative stress, inhibiting the p38/ERK/JNK signaling pathways and activating Nrf2 expression.

Abstract
Liver injury plays a heavy burden on the chicken industry. Although modified rougan decoction is a prescription for the treatment of liver disease based on the classical prescription of rougan decoction (containing peony and licorice). However, the effect and mechanism of modified rougan decoction on the liver remain unclear. In this study, the effects of the water extracts (MRGD) and the alcohol precipitates of water extracts (MRGDE) against lipopolysaccharide-enrofloxacin (LPS-ENR)-induced hepatotoxicity were discussed in vivo and in vitro. The isolated hepatocytes and 128 one-day-old Hyline chickens were considered research objects. The indices of liver injury and oxidative stress were evaluated by hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stained and the assay kits, and the nuclear erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)/antioxidant responsive element (ARE) pathway was detected by the RT-PCR, western blot, and immunofluorescence tests. All data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS 20.0 software. In vivo, the structural integrity of the liver was maintained, AST, ALT, and MDA levels were decreased, and antioxidant enzymes were increased, confirming that the oxidative stress was reduced and liver injury was alleviated. Correspondingly, MRGD and MRGDE were observed to improve cell viability and decrease lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in vitro, and the cell oxidative damage was reduced. In addition, the nuclear translocation of Nrf2 was improved significantly, and the mRNA and protein expression levels of the related genes were upregulated. In conclusion, MRGD and MRGDE can exert a protective effect against LPS-ENR-induced hepatotoxicity by activating the Nrf2/ARE pathway, which might be a potential therapeutic prescription for preventing or treating liver injury. Notably, no significant difference was found between the 2 extracts, suggesting that a depth extraction method did not always improve the efficacy of natural medicine. Our results provided new insights into finding effective hepatoprotective medicine.

Abstract
The bark extract of Rhizophora mucronata (BERM) was recently reported for its prominent in vitro protective effects against liver cell line toxicity caused by various toxicants, including ethanol. Here, we aimed to verify the in vivo hepatoprotective effects of BERM against ethanol intoxication with the prediction of potential targets employing in silico studies. An oral administration of different concentrations (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight) of BERM before high-dose ethanol via intraperitoneal injection was performed in mice. On day 7, liver sections were dissected for histopathological examination. The ethanol intoxication caused liver injury and large areas of necrosis. The pre-BERM administration decreased the ethanol-induced liver damage marker tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) expression, reduced hepatotoxicity revealed by nuclear deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) fragmentation and decreased oxidative stress indicated by malondialdehyde and glutathione contents. Our in silico studies have identified BERM-derived metabolites exhibiting the highest predicted antioxidant and free radical scavenger activities. Molecular docking studies showed that most of the metabolites were predicted to be enzyme inhibitors such as carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, which were reported to stimulate the antioxidant defense system. The metabolites predominantly presented acceptable pharmacokinetics and safety profiles, suggesting them as promising new antioxidant agents. Altogether, the BERM extract exerts antioxidative activities and shows promising hepatoprotective effects against ethanol intoxication. Identification of related bioactive compounds will be of interest for future use at physiological concentrations in ethanol-intoxicated individuals.

Abstract
Contamination of drinking water by carcinogen arsenic (As) is of worldwide concern as its exposure poses potential threat to human health. As such, it is important to understand the mechanisms associated with As-induced toxicity to humans. The Nrf2/Keap1 signal pathway is one of the most important defense mechanisms in cells to counter oxidative stress; however, limited information is available regarding its role in countering As-induced stress in model animal mouse. In this study, we assessed the responses of Nrf2/keap1 pathway in mice after chronic exposure to As at environmentally-relevant concentrations of 10-200 μg L-1 for 30 days via drinking water. Our results indicate that chronic As exposure had limited effect on mouse growth. However, As induced oxidative stress to mice as indicated by increased content of malondialdehyde (MDA; 52-90%), an index of lipid peroxidation. Further, arsenic exposure reduced the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD; 14-18%), an indication of reduced anti-oxidative activity. Besides, arsenic exposure increased MnSOD mRNA transcription by 25-66%, and decreased the mRNA transcriptions of Cu/ZnSOD by 72-83% and metallothionein by 16-75%, a cysteine-rich protein involved in metal detoxification. To counter arsenic toxicity, the expression of transcription factor for Nrf2 and Keap1 was increased by 2.8-8.9 and 0.2-8.1 fold in mice. To effectively reduce As-induced oxidative stress, the Nrf2/Keap1 transcription factor upregulated several downstream anti-oxidative genes, including heme oxygenase-1 (0.9-2.5 fold), glutamate-cysteine ligase catalytic subunit (0.6-1.7 fold), and NADH quinone dehydrogenase 1 (2.1-4.8 fold). This study shows the importance of Nrf2/Keap1 signaling pathway and associated anti-oxidative enzymes in countering As-toxicity in mice, possibly having implication for human health.
