Abstract
Zizania latifolia is an aquatic and medicinal plant with a long history of development in China and the East Asian region. The smut fungus "Ustilago esculenta" parasitizes Z. latifolia and induces culm expansion to form a vegetable named Jiaobai, which has a unique taste and nutritional attributes. However, the postharvest quality of water bamboo shoots is still a big challenge for farmers and merchants. This paper traced the origin, development process, and morphological characteristics of Z. latifolia. Subsequently, the compilation of the primary nutrients and bioactive substances are presented in context to their effects on ecology a postharvest storage and preservation methods. Furthermore, the industrial, environmental, and material science applications of Z. latifolia in the fields of industry were discussed. Finally, the primary objective of the review proposes future directions for research to support the development of Z. latifolia industry and aid in maximizing its value. To sum up, Z. latifolia, aside from its potential as material it can be utilized to make different productions and improve the existing applications. This paper provides an emerging strategy for researchers undertaking Z. latifolia.

Abstract
Long-term hepatic damage is associated with human morbidity and mortality owing to numerous pathogenic factors. A variety of studies have focused on improving liver health using natural products and herbal medicines. We aimed to investigate the effect of enzyme-treated Zizania latifolia ethanol extract (ETZL), which increases the content of tricin via enzymatic hydrolysis, for 8 weeks on liver-related outcomes, lipid metabolism, antioxidant activity, and fatigue compared to a placebo. Healthy Korean adult males aged 19-60 years were randomized into ETZL treatment and placebo groups, and alcohol consumption was 24.96 and 28.64 units/week, respectively. Alanine transaminase, a blood marker associated with liver cell injury, significantly decreased after 8 weeks compared to the baseline in the ETZL treatment group (p = 0.004). After 8 weeks, the treatment group showed significant changes in the levels of high-density lipoprotein and hepatic steatosis index compared to the baseline (p = 0.028 and p = 0.004, respectively). ETZL treatment tended to reduce antioxidant-activity-related factors, total antioxidant status, and malondialdehyde, but there was no significant difference. In the multidimensional fatigue scale, ETZL treatment showed a significant reduction in general fatigue and total-fatigue-related values after 8 weeks compared to the baseline (p = 0.012 and p = 0.032, respectively). Taken together, the 8-week treatment of enzyme-treated Zizania latifolia ethanol extract demonstrated positive effects on liver-related outcomes, lipid metabolism, and mental fatigue without adverse effects on safety-related parameters.

Abstract
Photoaging is the main form of external skin aging, and ultraviolet radiation is the main cause. Long-term ultraviolet radiation can cause oxidative stress, inflammation, immune responses, and skin cell apoptosis. Therefore, it is necessary to explore active products from plants to treat skin photoaging. C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into control, model, and purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.) extract-treated groups (150, 300, and 600 mg/kg). Ultraviolet (UV) radiation induces skin photoaging. Histopathological changes in the skin were observed by hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), Masson's trichrome, and toluidine staining. Levels of hydroxyproline (HYP), hyaluronic acid (HA), collagen I (COL1), catalase (CAT), malondialdehyde (MDA), and total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) were measured. UVB-induced BJ and HaCaT cells were used to evaluate the effects of the crude extract. The effects of the purslane extract on miR-138-5p/Sirt1 signaling were then tested. The results showed that the purslane extract significantly increased cell viability in UVB-induced cells and decreased oxidative damage and inflammation. In addition, the extract affected the miR-138-5p levels in vivo and in vitro, and increased the levels of the target gene Sirt1. In UVB-induced cells, purslane extract significantly altered the expression levels of genes or proteins associated with miR-138-5p/Sirt1 signaling. Inflammation and oxidative damage were significantly enhanced when miR-138-5p was overexpressed, and the expression levels of the genes and proteins were reversed by the extract. Co-transfection with the miR-138-5p inhibitor and si-Sirt1 showed the same effects as the extract on the signal. Similar results have been observed in mice. In summary, purslane extract showed potent protective effects against skin photoaging by regulating the miR-138-5p/Sirt1 axis and should be used as a natural product for skin care.

Abstract
Chinese wild rice (Zizania latifolia) is rich in flavonoids and the characteristic colour of its pericarp is attributed to the flavonoids. In this study, the molecular basis of the colour change in the pericarp of Chinese wild rice was studied using metabolomics and proteomics. Whole seeds in three developmental stages (10, 20, and 30 days after flowering) were characterised based on phenolic contents, free amino acids (FAAs), and the expression level and activities of enzymes critical in flavonoid biosynthesis. The total phenolic and proanthocyanidin contents of Chinese wild rice increased gradually, whereas total flavonoid and FAA contents decreased during seed development. Metabolomic analysis revealed gradual upward trends for 57 flavonoids (sub classes 1, 3, and 10) related to colour change in the pericarp. Proteomic analysis showed that the phenylpropanoid biosynthesis metabolic pathway was enriched with differentially expressed proteins and was associated with flavonoid biosynthesis. Proteomic data suggested that leucoanthocyanidin reductase and WD40 repeat protein may be involved in flavonoid biosynthesis in Chinese wild rice, which was also verified by real-time quantitative PCR. Our results provide new insights into the understanding of the colour formation in the pericarp of Chinese wild rice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rice has been used for cosmetic purposes for centuries and its benefits have been translated into modern-day skin careproducts. METHODS Pubmed and google were searched with the terms "skin care" and "cosmetics" in conjunction with the words "rice", "rice bran", and "fermented rice bran". Resulting articles were analysed for potential benefits of ingredients contained within rice for skin care and summarised. RESULTS Individual components of rice have been identified including phenolic compounds, betaine, squalene, tricin, and rice bran. These rice-derived ingredients have been found to be antiaging, anti-inflammatory, whitening, photoprotective, and moisturizing. Moreover, rice-derived ingredients have demonstrated benefits for dermatological conditions. Rice bran ash extract increases melanin synthesis and offers protection from radiation and skin injury. Fermented rice bran extract and rice bran broth baths have shown utility in atopic dermatitis treatments. Literature suggests that rice-derived ingredients are also safe, non-irritating, and hypoallergenic. CONCLUSION Ingredients isolated from rice and its components have wide potential for use in skin care and cosmetic products.

Abstract
Zizania latifolia Turcz. has long been used as a food source in Southeast Asia. The grains, stems, and leaves of Z. latifolia and its major component, tricin, have also been studied to determine their biological activities. Previously, we hydrolyzed the aerial part of Z. latifolia using an enzyme mixture to maximize the tricin content of the Z. latifolia extract. However, the safety of enzyme-treated Z. latifolia extract (ETZL; DermaNiA™) has not yet been determined. In this study, we performed an in vivo 90-day repeated-dose evaluation and genotoxicity study to assess the toxicological potential of ETZL. EZTL did not exhibit genotoxicity in the bacterial reverse mutation test, in vitro chromosomal aberration assay, or in vivo micronucleus test. Moreover, no changes in body weight or hematological and serum biological parameters were observed in male or female rats under high-dose EZTL treatment (5000 mg/kg body weight (bw)/day) for 90 days with a 4-week recovery period. Significant changes were noted in the forestomach, kidneys, and adrenal glands in the test groups, but these changes, or tendency for recovery, were not observed in the recovery group. Based on these data, the no adverse effect level was determined to be 1250 mg/kg bw/day in rats.

Abstract
In this study, the ameliorative effect of water bamboo shoot (WBS) on acute alcoholism mice was investigated and potential biological compounds were explored. Results showed that extraction methods significantly affected the active substances contents and bioactivities of WBS. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that alkali extract (NE) obtained the highest score, therefore, it was selected for further analysis. Animal experiments showed that NE demonstrated ameliorative effects on acute alcoholism mice as evident by significantly elevated activities of dehydrogenase (alcohol dehydrogenase, acetaldehyde dehydrogenase) and antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase), whereas significantly reduced the levels of aminotransferase (alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase) in serum. The potential bioactive activity compounds of NE were explored by UPLC-MS/MS and bioinformatics analysis. Butyl isobutyl phthalate vanillin, ferulic acid methyl ester might be the major compounds in NE on alleviating acute alcoholism. These results indicated that WBS possesses potential ameliorating effect on acute alcoholism.

Repetitive Bathing and Skin Poultice with Hydrogen-Rich Water Improve Wrinkles and Blotches Together with Modulation of Skin Oiliness and Moisture. HYDROGEN 2022. Abstract
Hydrogen-rich warm water (HW) has not been verified yet for skin anti-aging effects. Daily 10 min HW (dissolved hydrogen: 338–682 μg/mL, 41 °C) bathing and skin poultice with HW-impregnated towels for 11–61 days were demonstrated to improve wrinkle degrees (29 skin-loci) from 3.14 ± 0.52 to 1.52 ± 0.74 (p < 0.001) and blotch degrees (23 loci) from 3.48 ± 0.67 to 1.74 ± 0.86 (p < 0.001) in five healthy subjects (49–66 years old), by densito-/planimetrically evaluating with an Image-J software, and ranked into six hierarchies (0, 1–5). Meanwhile, skin oiliness was evaluated to increase for the oil-poor skins, but inversely decrease for excessively oily skins, suggesting the HW’s function as skin-oiliness modulation, with an appreciably negative correlation in prior oiliness contents versus change after HW application (r = −0.345, 23 loci). Skin moisture increased upon HW application, with a negative correlation (r = −0.090, 23 loci) in prior moisture contents versus post-HW-application moisture-changing rates, meaning that HW application compensated moisture for water-deficient skins (27.5–40% moisture), but not for wet skins (>41% moisture). Thus, the HW bath together with HW poultice exerted beneficial effects on skin appearances such as wrinkles, blotches and moisture/oiliness, some of which might ensue from enhanced antioxidant ability in blood, as was previously demonstrated for the HW bath.
