Hybrid Engineered Water–Polymer Flooding in Carbonates: A Review of Mechanisms and Case Studies

Exploring carbonate rock wettability across scales: role of (bio)minerals

HYPOTHESIS

The wettability of carbonate rocks is expected to be affected by the organic components of biominerals which are complex, nanostructured organo-mineral assemblages. Elucidating the nanoscale mechanisms driving the wettability of solid surfaces will enable a better understanding of the role of biominerals in the wetting properties of carbonate rocks to control various geological, environmental and industrial processes.

EXPERIMENTS

Using Atomic Force Microscopy and Spectroscopy (AFM/AFS) we probed the wettability properties of carbonate rocks with different amounts of organic material. The adhesion properties of two types of limestones were determined in liquid environments at different length scales (nm to mm) using functionalized tips with different chemical groups to determine the extent of surface hydrophobic and hydrophilic organo-mineral interactions.

FINDINGS

We observed homogeneous hydrophobic areas at length scales below < 5 µm. The origin of this hydrophobicity is linked to the presence of organics, whose amount and spatial distribution depend on the rock composition. Specifically, our results reveal that the biogenic vs non-biogenic origin of the mineral grains is the main rock property controlling the wettability of the solid surface. Overall, our methodology offers a multi-scale approach to unravel the role that organic moieties and biominerals play in controlling the wettability of rock-water interfaces.

Effect of Rheological Properties of Polymer Solution on Polymer Flooding Characteristics

Polymer flooding is an appropriate enhanced oil recovery (EOR) process that can increase macroscopic sweep efficiency. We examined two polymeric superpushers at different salinities (10,000 and 42,000 ppm of NaCl and 18,000 ppm of CaCl₂) and temperatures (30 to 75 °C) as polymer-flooding agents for the EOR process. Rheological and thixotropic tests were attempted to find shear viscosity change when the polymer solutions were introduced under different salinity and temperatures, followed by describing the rheological behavior with the two most common rheological models used for polymer solutions, and then a quadratic model with Design-Expert to detect the effective parameters. Core flooding tests were conducted afterward to determine the final proposed fluid. An increase in the concentration of monovalent ions and the addition of divalent ions adversely affected both types of polymers used, which was similar to the effects of a temperature increase. The Flopaam 3630S at 1000 ppm has more stability under harsh conditions and enables 22% and 38% oil recovery in carbonate and sandstone core rocks, respectively. Consequently, Flopaam 3630S can be the perfect polymer agent for different chemical flooding procedures in high-salinity oil reservoirs.

Laboratory Investigation of Nanofluid-Assisted Polymer Flooding in Carbonate Reservoirs

In the petroleum industry, the remaining oil is often extracted using conventional chemical enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques, such as polymer flooding. Nanoparticles have also greatly aided EOR, with benefits like wettability alteration and improvements in fluid properties that lead to better oil mobility. However, silica nanoparticles combined with polymers like hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) improve polymer flooding performance with better mobility control. The oil displacement and the interaction between the rock and polymer solution are both influenced by this hybrid approach. In this study, we investigated the effectiveness of the injection of nanofluid-polymer as an EOR approach. It has been observed that nanoparticles can change rock wettability, increase polymer viscosity, and decrease polymer retention in carbonate rock. The optimum concentrations for hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (2000 ppm) and 0.1 wt% (1000 ppm) silica nanoparticles were determined through rheology experiments and contact angle measurements. The results of the contact angle measurements revealed that 0.1 wt% silica nanofluid alters the contact angle by 45.6°. The nano-silica/polymer solution resulted in a higher viscosity than the pure polymer solution as measured by rheology experiments. A series of flooding experiments were conducted on oil-wet carbonate core samples in tertiary recovery mode. The maximum incremental oil recovery of 26.88% was obtained by injecting silica nanofluid followed by a nanofluid-assisted polymer solution as an EOR technique. The application of this research will provide new opportunities for hybrid EOR techniques in maximizing oil production from depleted high-temperature and high-salinity carbonate reservoirs.

Updated Perceptions on Polymer-Based Enhanced Oil Recovery Toward High-Temperature High-Salinity Tolerance for Successful Field Applications in Carbonate Reservoirs

The aging of the existing reservoirs makes the hydrocarbon extraction shift toward newer reserves, and harsh conditioned carbonates, which possess high temperature and high salinity (HTHS). Conventional polymer-flooding fails in these HTHS carbonates, due to precipitation, viscosity loss, and polymer adsorption. Therefore, to counteract these challenges, novel polymer-based cEOR alternatives employ optimized polymers, polymer–surfactant, and alkali–surfactant–polymer solutions along with hybrid methods, which have shown a potential to target the residual or remaining oils in carbonates. Consequently, we investigate novel polymers, viz., ATBS, Scleroglucan, NVP-based polymers, and hydrophobic associative polymers, along with bio-polymers. These selected polymers have shown low shear sensitivity, low adsorption, and robust thermal/salinity tolerance. Additionally, adding an alkali-surfactant to polymer solution produces a synergy effect of improved mobility control, wettability alteration, and interfacial-tension reduction. Thus, enhancing the displacement and sweep efficiencies. Moreover, low-salinity water can precondition high-salinity reservoirs before polymer flooding (hybrid method), to decrease polymer adsorption and viscosity loss. Thus, this paper is a reference for novel polymers, and their hybrid techniques, to improve polymer-based cEOR field applications under HTHS conditions in carbonates. Additionally, the recommendations can assist in project designs with reasonable costs and minimal environmental impact. The implication of this work will aid in supplementing the oil and gas energy sector growth, making a positive contribution to the Middle Eastern economy.

Impact of Chelating Agent Salt Type on the Enhanced Oil Recovery from Carbonate and Sandstone Reservoirs

In this paper, chelating agents were introduced as standalone fluids for enhancing the oil recovery from carbonate and sandstone reservoirs. Chelating agents such as glutamic acid di-acetic acid (GLDA), ethylene-diamine-tetra acetic acid (EDTA), and hydroxyl-ethylethylene-diamine-tri-acetic acid (HEDTA) were used. Chelating agents can be found in different forms such as sodium, potassium, or calcium salts. There is a significant gap in the literature about the influence of salt type on the hydrocarbon recovery from carbonate and sandstone reservoirs. In this study, the impact of the salt type of GLDA chelating agent on the oil recovery was investigated. Potassium-, sodium-, and calcium-based high-pH GLDA solutions were used. Coreflooding experiments were conducted at high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) conditions using carbonate and sandstone cores. The used samples had porosity values of 15–18%, and permeability values were between 10 and 75 mD. Seawater was injected as a secondary recovery process. Thereafter, a GLDA solution was injected in tertiary mode, until no more oil was recovered. In addition to the recovery experiments, the collected effluent was analyzed for cations concentrations such as calcium, magnesium, and iron. Moreover, dynamic adsorption, interfacial tension, and contact angle measurements were conducted for the different forms of GLDA chelating agent solutions. The results of this study showed that incremental oil recovery between 19% and 32% of the Original Oil in Place (OOIP) can be achieved, based on the salt type and the rock lithology. Flooding carbonate rocks with the calcium-based GLDA chelating agent yielded the highest oil recovery (32% of OOIP), followed by that with potassium-based GLDA chelating agent, and the sodium-based GLDA chelating agent yielded the lowest oil recovery. The reason behind that was the adsorption of the calcium-based GLDA on the rock surface was the highest without reducing the rock permeability, which was indicated by the contact angle, dynamic adsorption, and flooding experiments. The outcome of this study will help in maximizing the oil recovery from carbonate and sandstone reservoirs by suggesting the most suitable salt type of chelating agents.

Capillary Desaturation Tendency of Hybrid Engineered Water-Based Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery Methods

Several studies have shown the synergetic benefits of combining various chemical enhanced oil recovery (CEOR) methods with engineered waterflooding (EWF) in both sandstones and carbonate formations. This paper compares the capillary desaturation tendency of various hybrid combinations of engineered water (EW) and CEOR methods with their conventional counterparts. Several coreflood experiments were conducted, including EW-surfactant flooding (EWSF), EW-polymer flooding (EWPF), EW-alkali-surfactant flooding (EWASF), EW-surfactant-polymer flooding (EWSPF), and EW-alkali-surfactant-polymer flooding (EWASP). Capillary numbers (Nc) and corresponding residual oil saturation (Sor) for each scenario are compared with capillary desaturation curves (CDC) of conventional CEOR methods from the literature. The results indicate that hybrid EW–CEOR methods have higher capillary desaturation tendency compared to conventional methods. The capillary numbers obtained by standalone polymer flooding (PF) are usually in the range from 10−6 to 10−5, which are not sufficient to cause a significant reduction in Sor. However, the hybrid EW-polymer flooding approach considerably reduced the Sor for the same Nc values, proving the effectiveness of the investigated method. The hybrid EWASP flooding caused the highest reduction in Sor (23%) against Nc values of 8 × 10−2, while conventional ASP flooding reduced the Sor for relatively higher Nc values (3 × 10−3 to 8 × 10−1). Overall, the hybrid methods are 30–70% more efficient in terms of recovering residual oil, compared to standalone EWF and CEOR methods. This can be attributed to the combination of different mechanisms such as wettability modification by EW, ultralow interfacial tension by alkali and surfactant, reduced surfactant adsorption by alkali addition, and favorable mobility ratio by polymer. Based on the promising results, these hybrid techniques can be effectively implemented to carbonate formations with harsh reservoir conditions such as high salinity and high temperature.

Catalytic Effects of Temperature and Silicon Dioxide Nanoparticles on the Acceleration of Production from Carbonate Rocks

The use of engineered water (EW) nanofluid flooding in carbonates is a new enhanced oil recovery (EOR) hybrid technique that has yet to be extensively investigated. In this research, we investigated the combined effects of EW and nanofluid flooding on oil-brine-rock interactions and recovery from carbonate reservoirs at different temperatures. EW was used as dispersant for SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs), and a series of characterisation experiments were performed to determine the optimum formulations of EW and NP for injection into the porous media. The EW reduced the contact angle and changed the rock wettability from the oil-wet condition to an intermediate state at ambient temperature. However, in the presence of NPs, the contact angle was reduced further, to very low values. When the effects of temperature were considered, the wettability changed more rapidly from a hydrophobic state to a hydrophilic one. Oil displacement was studied by injection of the optimised EW, followed by an EW-nanofluid mixture. An additional recovery of 20% of the original oil in place was achieved. The temperature effects mean that these mechanisms are catalytic, and the process involves the initiation and activation of multiple mechanisms that are not activated at lower temperatures and in each standalone technique.
