Adsorptive Recovery of Cu2+ from Aqueous Solution by Polyethylene Terephthalate Nanofibres Modified with 2-(Aminomethyl)Pyridine

UV aging may enhance adsorption capacity of Poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) to heavy metals and toxicity to zebrafish

Compared with the fossil-based plastics, biodegradable plastics are more easily decomposed into small-sized particles (e.g., microplastics). However, the role of aged biodegradable plastics in being vector of co-existed pollutants and potential toxicological effects remain to be elucidated. The present study selected micro-sized biodegradable polymer Poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) as the object, aiming to explore its aging process, environmental behavior with heavy metals (Cu and Pb), and the toxic effects on zebrafish. The results showed that distinct changes such as cracks and severe deformation can be observed on the surface of PBAT after 60 days of UV aging, and the functional groups changed consequently. The maximum adsorption capacity of aged PBAT for Cu and Pb reached 0.967 and 0.939 mg·g-1, which increased by 1.32 and 1.46 times, respectively. The results of 7-day acute toxicology experiments suggested that the adsorption behavior of aged PBAT may alleviate the toxic effects of heavy metals Cu and Pb on zebrafish in short-term exposure, however it could simultaneously cause a serious imbalance of intestinal microorganisms in zebrafish. As demonstrated, the coexistence of aged PBAT and heavy metals (Cu, Pb) can seriously reduce the intestinal microbial diversity and richness of zebrafish, which may induce more serious toxicity and disease in long-term exposure to pollutants. This study could provide fundamental data for better understanding on the adsorption behavior and ecological risk of aged biodegradable plastics with coexisted pollutants.

Adsorbents obtained from recycled polymeric materials for retention of different pollutants: A review

Polymeric waste is an environmental problem, with an annual world production of approximately 368 million metric tons, and increasing every year. Therefore, different strategies for polymer waste treatment have been developed, and the most common are (1) redesign, (2) reusing and (3) recycling. The latter strategy represents a useful option to generate new materials. This work reviews the emerging trends in the development of adsorbent materials obtained from polymer wastes. Adsorbents are used in filtration systems or in extraction techniques for the removal of contaminants such as heavy metals, dyes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and other organic compounds from air, biological and water samples. The methods used to obtain different adsorbents are detailed, as well as the interaction mechanisms with the compounds of interest (contaminants). The adsorbents obtained are an alternative to recycle polymeric and they are competitive with other materials applied in the removal and extraction of contaminants.

Fabrication and Characterization of Electrospun Waste Polyethylene Terephthalate Blended with Chitosan: A Potential Single-Use Material

Textile single-use products are dominantly used for hygiene and personal care, many of which are non-biodegradable and are frequently discarded into sewerage systems, thus causing blockages. Thus, there is a need to move towards water-soluble textiles. This research study focuses on transforming or repurposing biomass material and synthetic reusable waste plastic materials to improve waste. Chitosan (CS) nanofibers could be used in single-use nonwoven fabric or biodegradable tissues, as the water-soluble properties of chitosan nanofibers make them the perfect material for single-use applications. Furthermore, CS was blended with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polymer and PET-based waste plastic (CS-WPET) to slow the CS nanofibers' water degradability and strengthen the durability of the nanofiber which could be used as air filters. The CS-TFA and CS-TFA/DCM nanofiber diameters were 95.58 ± 39.28 nm or 907.94 ± 290.18 nm, respectively, as measured from the HRSEM images. The CS-PET and CS-WPET hybrid nanofibers had fiber diameters of 246.13 ± 96.36 or 58.99 ± 20.40 nm, respectively. The thermal durability of the nanofibers was tested by TGA, which showed that CS-TFA/DCM nanofibers had sufficient thermal stability up to 150 °C, making them suitable for filter or fabric use at moderate temperatures. The blended nanofibers (CS-PET and CS-WPET) were thermally stable up to 160 °C. In the aqueous medium stability test, CS-PET and CS-WPET hybrid nanofibers had a slower degradation rate and were easily dissolved, while the CS nanofibers were rapidly and completely dissolved in an aqueous medium. Blending waste PET with CS allows it to be recycled into a useful single-use, non-woven textile, with greater water solubility than unmodified PET nanofibers but more durability than CS nanofibers on their own.

Recycling and Reutilizing Polymer Waste via Electrospun Micro/Nanofibers: A Review

The accumulation of plastic waste resulting from the increasing demand for non-degradable plastics has led to a global environmental crisis. The severe environmental and economic drawbacks of inefficient, expensive, and impractical traditional waste disposal methods, such as landfills, incineration, plastic recycling, and energy production, limit the expansion of their applications to solving the plastic waste problem. Finding novel ways to manage the large amount of disposed plastic waste is urgent. Until now, one of the most valuable strategies for the handling of plastic waste has been to reutilize the waste as raw material for the preparation of functional and high-value products. Electrospun micro/nanofibers have drawn much attention in recent years due to their advantages of small diameter, large specific area, and excellent physicochemical features. Thus, electrospinning recycled plastic waste into micro/nanofibers creates diverse opportunities to deal with the environmental issue caused by the growing accumulation of plastic waste. This paper presents a review of recycling and reutilizing polymer waste via electrospinning. Firstly, the advantages of the electrospinning approach to recycling plastic waste are summarized. Then, the studies of electrospun recycled plastic waste are concluded. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives of electrospun recycled plastic waste are provided. In conclusion, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of electrospun recycled plastic waste for researchers to develop further studies.
