Zwitterionic Polymer P(AM-DMC-AMPS) as a Low-Molecular-Weight Encapsulator in Deepwater Drilling Fluid

A Temperature-Sensitive Polymeric Rheology Modifier Used in Water-Based Drilling Fluid for Deepwater Drilling

Rheology modifiers are essential for the flat rheology of water-based drilling fluids in deepwater. The low temperature thickening of deepwater water-based drilling fluids results in dramatic rheological changes in the 20–30 °C range. To address such problems, NIPAM with a self-polymerized product LCST of 32–35 °C was selected as the main body for synthesis. While introducing the hydrophilic monomer AM to enhance the thickening properties, the hydrophobic monomer BA was selected to reduce the LCST of the product. In this paper, a temperature-sensitive polymeric rheology modifier (PNBAM) was synthesized by emulsion polymerization using N-isopropyl acrylamide, acrylamide, and butyl acrylate as monomers. The PNBAM was characterized using infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and nuclear magnetic resonance hydrogen spectroscopy (NMR). The rheological properties, temperature resistance, and salt resistance of PNBAM in the base fluid (BF) were tested. The performance of PNBAM in the drilling fluid system was also evaluated, and a water-based drilling fluid system of flat rheology for deepwater was formulated. The rheological modification mechanism of PNBAM was analyzed by turbidity analysis, particle size analysis, and zeta analysis. Experimental results show that PNBAM has good rheological properties. PNBAM is temperature resistant to 150 °C, salt-resistant to 30 wt%, and calcium resistant to 1.0 wt%. PNBAM also has good flat rheology characteristics in drilling fluid systems: AV_4°C:AV_25°C = 1.27, PV_4°C:PV_25°C = 1.19. Mechanistic analysis showed that the LCST (Lower Critical Solution Temperature) of 0.2 wt% PNBAM in an aqueous solution was 31 °C. Through changes in hydrogen bonding forces with water, PNBAM can regulate its hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties before and after LCST, which thus assists BF to achieve a flat rheological effect. In summary, the temperature-sensitive effect of PNBAM has the property of enhancing with increasing temperature. While the tackifying effect of conventional rheology modifiers diminishes with increasing temperature, the temperature-sensitive effect of PNBAM gives it an enhanced thickening effect with increasing temperature, making it a more novel rheology modifier compared to conventional treatment additives. After LCST, compared to conventional rheology modifiers (XC), PNBAM has a more pronounced thermo-thickening effect, improving the main rheological parameters of BF by more than 100% or even up to 200% (XC less than 50%). This contributes to the flat rheology of drilling fluids. PNBAM has good application prospects and serves as a good reference for the development of other rheology modifiers.

Study on the Shale Hydration Inhibition Performance of Triethylammonium Acetate

Shale inhibitor is an additive for drilling fluids that can be used to inhibit shale hydration expansion and dispersion, and prevent wellbore collapse. Small molecular quaternary ammonium salt can enter the interlayer of clay crystal, and enables an excellent shale inhibition performance. In this paper, a novel ionic shale inhibitor, triethylammonium acetate (TEYA), was obtained by solvent-free synthesis by using acetic acid and triethylamine as raw materials. The final product was identified as the target product by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The inhibition performance of TEYA was studied by the mud ball immersion test, linear expansion test, rolling recovery test and particle size distribution test. The results demonstrated that the shale inhibitor shows a good shale hydration inhibition performance. The inhibition mechanism was studied by FT-IR and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively; the results showed that triethylammonium acetate TEYA could enter the crystal layer of clay and inhibit it through physical adsorption.

A Zwitterionic Copolymer as Rheology Modifier and Fluid Loss Agents for Water-Based Drilling Fluids

To overcome the negative impact on the rheological and filtration loss properties of drilling fluids caused by elevated temperature and salts contamination, which are common in ultradeep or geothermal drilling operations, it is imperative to develop highly efficient additives used in the water-based drilling fluid. In this study, a zwitterionic copolymer P (AM/DMC/AMPS/DMAM, ADAD) was synthesized by using acrylamide (AM), cationic monomer methacrylatoethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DMC), anionic monomer 2-acrylamide-2-methyl propane sulfonic acid (AMPS), and N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAM) through free radical copolymerization. The copolymer was characterized by 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and zeta potential. The rheological behavior, filtration properties, and the performance exposure to salt or calcium contamination in water-based drilling fluid were investigated. The bentonite/polymer suspension showed improved rheological and filtration properties even after aging at 160 °C or a high concentration of salt and calcium. The filtration loss can be greatly reduced by more than 50% (from 18 mL to 7 mL) by the inclusion of 2.0 wt% copolymer, while a slight increase in the filtrate loss was observed even when exposed to electrolyte contamination. Particle size distribution and zeta potential further validate the idea that zwitterionic copolymer can greatly improve the stability of base fluid suspension through positive group enhanced anchoring on the clay surface and repulsion force between negative particles. Moreover, this study can be directed towards the design and application of zwitterionic copolymer in a water-based drilling fluid.

Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquids as Clay Swelling Inhibitors: Mechanism, Performance Evaluation, and Effect of Different Anions

Clay swelling is one of the challenges faced by the oil industry. Water-based drilling fluids (WBDF) are commonly used in drilling operations. The selection of WBDF depends on its performance to improve rheology, hydration properties, and fluid loss control. However, WBDF may result in clay swelling in shale formations during drilling. In this work, the impact of imidazolium-based ionic liquids on the clay swelling was investigated. The studied ionic liquids have a common cation group, 1-allyl-3-methyllimidozium, but differ in anions (bromide, iodide, chloride, and dicyanamide). The inhibition behavior of ionic liquids was assessed by linear swell test, inhibition test, capillary suction test, rheology, filtration, contact angle measurement, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). It was observed that the ionic liquids with different anions reduced the clay swelling. Ionic liquids having a dicyanamide anion showed slightly better swelling inhibition performance compared to other inhibitors. Scanning electron microscopy images showed the water tendency to damage the clay structure, displaying asymmetrical cavities and sharp edges. Nevertheless, the addition of an ionic liquid to sodium bentonite (clay) exhibited fewer cavities and a smooth and dense surface. XRD results showed the increase in d-spacing, demonstrating the intercalation of ionic liquids in interlayers of clay. The results showed that the clay swelling does not strongly depend on the type of anion in imidazolium-based ILs. However, the type of anion in imidazolium-based ILs influences the rheological properties. The performance of ionic liquids was compared with that of the commonly used clay inhibitor (sodium silicate) in the oil and gas industry. ILs showed improved performance compared to sodium silicate. The studied ionic liquids can be an attractive alternative for commercial clay inhibitors as their impact on the other properties of the drilling fluids was less compared to commercial inhibitors.

Superhydrophilicity and strong salt-affinity: Zwitterionic polymer grafted surfaces with significant potentials particularly in biological systems

In recent years, zwitterionic polymers have been frequently reported to modify various surfaces to enhance hydrophilicity, antifouling and antibacterial properties, which show significant potentials particularly in biological systems. This review focuses on the fabrication, properties and various applications of zwitterionic polymer grafted surfaces. The "graft-from" and "graft-to" strategies, surface grafting copolymerization and post zwitterionization methods were adopted to graft lots type of the zwitterionic polymers on different inorganic/organic surfaces. The inherent hydrophilicity and salt affinity of the zwitterionic polymers endow the modified surfaces with antifouling, antibacterial and lubricating properties, thus the obtained zwitterionic surfaces show potential applications in biosystems. The zwitterionic polymer grafted membranes or stationary phases can effectively separate plasma, water/oil, ions, biomolecules and polar substrates. The nanomedicines with zwitterionic polymer shells have "stealth" effect in the delivery of encapsulated drugs, siRNA or therapeutic proteins. Moreover, the zwitterionic surfaces can be utilized as wound dressing, self-healing or oil extraction materials. The zwitterionic surfaces are expected as excellent support materials for biosensors, they are facing the severe challenges in the surface protection of marine facilities, and the dense ion pair layers may take unexpected role in shielding the grafted surfaces from strong electromagnetic field.

The Inhibition Property and Mechanism of a Novel Low Molecular Weight Zwitterionic Copolymer for Improving Wellbore Stability

In this work, a novel low molecular weight zwitterionic copolymer for improving wellbore stability, which is expected to be an alternative to the current shale inhibitors, was obtained by copolymerization of tris hydroxyethyl allyl ammonium bromide (THAAB), 2-acrylamido-2- methyl propane sulfonic acid (AMPS) and acrylamide (AM), initiated by a redox initiation system in an aqueous solution. The copolymer, denoted as SX-1, was characterized by FT-IR, TGA-DSC, and GPC. Results demonstrated that the molecular weight of SX-1 was approximately 13,683 g/mol and it displayed temperature resistance up to 225 °C. Regarding the inhibition performance, evaluation experiments showed the hot rolling recovery of a Longmaxi shale sample in 2.0 wt % SX-1 solutions was up to 90.31% after hot rolling for 16 h at 120 °C. The Linear swelling height of Na-MMT artificial core in 2.0 wt % SX-1 solution was just 4.74 mm after 16 h. Methods including particle size analysis, FTIR, XRD, and SEM were utilized to study the inhibition mechanism of SX-1; results demonstrated that SX-1 had entered into the inner layer of sodium montmorillonite (Na-MMT) and adsorbed on the inner surface, and the micro-structure of Na-MMT was successfully changed by SX-1. The particle size of Na-MMT in distilled water was 8.05 μm, and it was observed that its size had increased to 603 μm after the addition of 2.0 wt % of SX-1. Its superior properties make this novel low molecular weight copolymer promising for ensuring wellbore stability, particularly for high temperature wells.

Brine-Soluble Zwitterionic Copolymers with Tunable Adsorption on Rocks

Injection of aqueous fluids into reservoirs as an enhanced oil recovery (EOR) tool has been of great interest in petroleum engineering. EOR using viscous polymer solutions improves the volumetric sweep efficiency. However, significant polymer adsorption on reservoir rock surfaces is one of the greatest challenges in polymer-flooding EOR. We have synthesized and characterized five zwitterionic copolymers and studied their static adsorption on limestone surfaces in seawater at high temperatures and salinities. Our results indicate that polymer adsorption directly correlates to a small percentage of functional co-monomers on the polymer backbone. One particular copolymer shows negligible static adsorption on limestone surfaces.

Synthesis, Property and Mechanism Analysis of a Novel Polyhydroxy Organic Amine Shale Hydration Inhibitor

Based on the adsorption mechanism analysis of polyhydroxy organic compound on a shale surface, a novel polyhydroxy organic amine shale hydration inhibitor N, N, N′, N′-tetrakis (2-hydroxyethyl) ethylenediamine (THEED) was synthesized via a nucleophilic reaction by using diethanolamine and dibromoethane as raw materials. Its structure was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), Hydrogen Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H NMR) and Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (LCMS). The inhibition performance of THEED was studied by a shale rolling recovery experiment, a linear expansion experiment and the particle size distribution experiment. Results showed the shale rolling recovery rate in 2.0 wt % THEED solutions was up to 89.6% at the rolling condition of 100 °C × 16 h, and the linear expansion height of artificial shale core in 2.0 wt % THEED solutions was just 4.74 mm after 16 h. The average particle size of Na-bentonite (Na-MMT) in fresh water was 8.05 μm, and it was observed that the average particle size has been increased to 124 μm in 2.0 wt % THEED solutions. The shale hydration inhibition mechanism of the novel inhibitor THEED was analyzed by FTIR, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD), we concluded that the nice shale hydration inhibition performance of THEED was achieved by means of intercalation and adsorption onto the surface of shale. The superior shale hydration inhibition property makes THEED promising in maintaining wellbore stability in drilling engineering.

A polymer microsphere emulsion as a high-performance shale stabilizer for water-based drilling fluids

Interest in using nanomaterials to improve shale stability during drilling operations has been increasing. Herein, a polymer microsphere emulsion (PME) as a high-performance shale stabilizer for water-based drilling fluids (WDFs) was prepared via emulsion polymerization. The particle sizes in PME in aqueous solution ranged from 90 to 320 nm. PME was found to exhibit excellent salt tolerance and temperature resistance. The plugging performance of PME was tested through pressure transmission tests. The results indicated that the polymer microspheres in PME could effectively plug shale pores and reduce shale permeability. In addition, rolling recovery tests were used to evaluate the shale hydration inhibition performance of PME. It was found that PME showed great performance for decreasing shale hydration potential. These factors make PME a promising shale stabilizer for WDFs used to drill shale formations.
