Volatile Organic Compounds in a Petrochemical Region in Arid of NW China: Chemical Reactivity and Source Apportionment

Investigating the industrial origin of terpenoids in a coastal city in northern France: A source apportionment combining anthropogenic, biogenic, and oxygenated VOC

Terpenoids have long been known to originate from natural sources. However, there is growing evidence for emissions from anthropogenic activities in cities, in particular from the production, manufacturing, and use of household solvents. Here, as part of the DATAbASE (Do Anthropogenic Terpenoids mAtter in AtmoSpheric chEmistry?) project, we investigate for the first time the potential role of industrial activities on the terpenoid burden in the urban atmosphere. This study is based on continuous VOC observations from an intensive field campaign conducted in July 2014 at an industrial-urban background site located in Dunkirk, Northern France. More than 80 VOCs including oxygenated and terpenoid compounds were measured by on-line Thermal Desorption Gas Chromatography with a Flame Ionization Detection (TD-GC-FID) and Proton Transfer Reaction-Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (PTR-ToFMS). Isoprene, α-pinene, limonene and the sum of monoterpenes were the terpenoids detected at average mixing ratios of 0.02 ± 0.02 ppbv, 0.02 ± 0.02 ppbv, 0.01 ± 0.01 ppbv and 0.03 ± 0.05 ppbv, respectively. Like other anthropogenic VOCs, the mixing ratios of terpenoids significantly increase downwind the industrial plumes by one order of magnitude. Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) was performed to identify the different emission sources of VOCs and their contribution. Six factors out of the eight factors extracted (r2 = 0.95) are related to industrial emissions such as solvent use, chemical and agrochemical storage, metallurgy, petrochemical, and coal-fired industrial activities. From the correlations between the industrial-type PMF factors, sulfur dioxide, and terpenoids, we determined their emissions ratios and we quantified for the first time their industrial emissions. The highest emission ratio is related to the alkene-dominated factor and is related to petrochemical, metallurgical and coal-fired industrial activities. The industrial emissions of monoterpenes equal 8.1 ± 4.3 tons/year. Those emissions are as significant as the non-industrialized anthropogenic ones estimated for the Paris megacity.

Soil processes modify the composition of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from CO2- and CH4-dominated geogenic and landfill gases: A comprehensive study

Degradation mechanisms affecting non-methane volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during gas uprising from different hypogenic sources to the surface were investigated through extensive sampling surveys in areas encompassing a high enthalpy hydrothermal system associated with active volcanism, a CH4-rich sedimentary basin and a municipal waste landfill. For a comprehensive framework, published data from medium-to-high enthalpy hydrothermal systems were also included. The investigated systems were characterised by peculiar VOC suites that reflected the conditions of the genetic environments in which temperature, contents of organic matter, and gas fugacity had a major role. Differences in VOC patterns between source (gas vents and landfill gas) and soil gases indicated VOC transformations in soil. Processes acting in soil preferentially degraded high-molecular weight alkanes with respect to the low-molecular weight ones. Alkenes and cyclics roughly behaved like alkanes. Thiophenes were degraded to a larger extent with respect to alkylated benzenes, which were more reactive than benzene. Furan appeared less degraded than its alkylated homologues. Dimethylsulfoxide was generally favoured with respect to dimethylsulfide. Limonene and camphene were relatively unstable under aerobic conditions, while α-pinene was recalcitrant. O-bearing organic compounds (i.e., aldehydes, esters, ketones, alcohols, organic acids and phenol) acted as intermediate products of the ongoing VOC degradations in soil. No evidence for the degradation of halogenated compounds and benzothiazole was observed. This study pointed out how soil degradation processes reduce hypogenic VOC emissions and the important role played by physicochemical and biological parameters on the effective VOC attenuation capacity of the soil.

Volatile organic compounds at a roadside site in Hong Kong: Characteristics, chemical reactivity, and health risk assessment

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs) play important roles in atmospheric chemistry and are recognized as the major pollutants in roadside microenvironments of metropolitan Hong Kong, China. In this study, the ambient VOCs and OVOCs were intensively monitored at a roadside site in Hong Kong for one month during morning and evening rush hours. The emission characterizations, as well as ozone formation potentials (OFP) and hydroxyl radical (OH) loss rates (L_OH) were determined. Results from the campaign showed that the average concentrations of detected VOCs/OVOCs ranged from 0.21 to 9.67 ppb, and higher toluene to benzene (T/B) ratio was observed during evening sections due to the variation of fuel types in vehicle fleets and mix of additional emission sources in this site. On average, OVOCs had much higher concentrations than the targeted VOC species. Acetone, formaldehyde, and acetaldehyde were the three most abundant species, while formaldehyde showed the highest contributions to both OFP (32.20 %) and L_OH (16.80 %). Furthermore, potential health hazards with inhalation exposure to formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), 1,3-butadiene, toluene, benzene, and acrylonitrile were found. These results reveal that it is imperative to implement efficient control measures to reduce vehicle emissions for both primary and secondary pollutants and to protect both roadside workers and pedestrians.

Chemical reactivity of volatile organic compounds and their effects on ozone formation in a petrochemical industrial area of Lanzhou, Western China

Measurements of ozone (O₃) and its precursors were performed in the summer of 2019 in Lanzhou, a petrochemical industrial city, to better understand the reactivity of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and their effects on O₃ production. During the campaign, the daily maximum 8-hour average (MDA8) O₃, NO₂, and total VOC (TVOC) concentrations reached 72.2 ± 19.9 ppb, 24.9 ± 10.8 ppb, and 50.8 ± 46.1 ppb, respectively. Alkanes, alkenes, halocarbons, aromatics, and alkynes contributed 45.3%, 24.0%, 16.5%, 10.0%, and 4.2% to TVOCs, respectively. The OH reactivity and relative incremental reactivity (RIR) of VOCs at different times were calculated. The results indicated that alkenes played a predominant role, accounting for an average of 68.5% of the initial VOC reactivity. Compared to other regions, alkenes are relatively more important for O₃ formation in the petrochemical industry area of Lanzhou, while aromatics are relatively less important. Generally, O₃ formation occurred in a VOC-limited regime in the morning and in a transitional regime in the afternoon. The response surface methodology (RSM) combined with a chemical box model was applied to obtain relationships between O₃ and its precursors and determine the most effective way to reduce the O₃ concentration. Reduction in the non-alkene concentration slightly affected the O₃ concentration. In contrast, the effect of nitrogen oxides (NO_x) was closely related to the alkene concentration, and NO_x concentration reduction could lead to an increase in the O₃ concentration when alkenes were abated to less than 80% of the present concentration. To mitigate O₃ pollution near the petrochemical industrial area of Lanzhou, reducing the alkene concentration, especially the C4 alkene concentration (1,3-butadiene, cis-2-butene, and trans-2-butene), was the fastest and most effective control strategy. The results of this study serve as a reference for O₃ pollution control in petrochemical industrial areas.

Temporal Distribution and Source Apportionment of Composition of Ambient PM2.5 in Urumqi, North-West China

In order to identify the pollution characteristics and sources of PM2.5 in Urumqi, fine particulate matter samples were collected from September 2017 to August 2018, and the water-soluble ions (WSIs), organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and metal elements were analyzed. The results indicate that the annual mass concentration of PM2.5 in Urumqi was 158.85 ± 15.11 μg/m3, with the highest seasonal average in autumn (180.49 ± 87.22 μg/m3) and the lowest in summer (148.41 ± 52.60 μg/m3). SO42− (13.58 ± 16.4 μg/m3), NO3− (13.46 ± 17.5 μg/m3), and NH4+ (10.88 ± 12.2 μg/m3) were the most abundant WSIs, and the secondary inorganic ions (SNA = SO42− + NO3− + NH4+) accounted for 87.23% of the WSIs. The NO3−/SO42− ratio indicates that the contribution of stationary sources was dominant. The annual concentrations of OC and EC were 12.00 ± 4.4 µg/m3 and 5.00 ± 3.5 µg/m3, respectively, the OC/EC ratios in winter (2.55 ± 0.7), spring (3.43 ± 1.3), and summer (3.22 ± 1.1) were greater than 2, and there was the formation of secondary organic carbon (SOC). The correlation between OC and EC in spring in Urumqi (R2 = 0.53) was low. In the PM2.5, Al and Fe were the most abundant elements. The highest mass concentration season occurred in autumn, with mass concentrations of 15.11 ± 10.1 µg/m3 and 8.33 ± 6.9 µg/m3, respectively. The enrichment factor (EF) shows that most of the metal elements come from natural sources, and the Cd element mainly comes from anthropogenic sources. PAHs with a middle molecular weight were the main ones, and the annual average annual mass concentration of the PAHs was 451.35 ng/m3. The positive matrix factor model (PMF) source analysis shows that there are five main sources of PM2.5 in Urumqi, including crustal minerals, biomass combustion, coal combustion, vehicular transport, and secondary aerosols. The distribution percentages of these different sources were 19.2%, 10.2%, 12.1%, 8.2%, and 50.3%, respectively.

Spatial and Temporal Distributions and Sources of Anthropogenic NMVOCs in the Atmosphere of China: A Review

As the key precursors of O₃, anthropogenic non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs) have been studied intensively. This paper performed a meta-analysis on the spatial and temporal variations of NMVOCs, their roles in photochemical reactions, and their sources in China, based on published research. The results showed that both non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) and oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs) in China have higher mixing ratios in the eastern developed cities compared to those in the central and western areas. Alkanes are the most abundant NMHCs species in all reported sites while formaldehyde is the most abundant among the OVOCs. OVOCs have the highest mixing ratios in summer and the lowest in winter, which is opposite to NMHCs. Among all NMVOCs, the top eight species account for 50%-70% of the total ozone formation potential (OFP) with different compositions and contributions in different areas. In devolved regions, OFP-NMHCs are the highest in winter while OFP-OVOCs are the highest in summer. Based on positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis, vehicle exhaust, industrial emissions, and solvent usage in China are the main sources for NMHCs. However, the emission trend analysis showed that solvent usage and industrial emissions will exceed vehicle exhaust and become the two major sources of NMVOCs in near future. Based on the meta-analysis conducted in this work, we believe that the spatio-temporal variations and oxidation mechanisms of atmospheric OVOCs, as well as generating a higher spatial resolution of emission inventories of NMVOCs represent an area for future studies on NMVOCs in China.

Hybrid Ventilation System and Soft-Sensors for Maintaining Indoor Air Quality and Thermal Comfort in Buildings

Maintaining both indoor air quality (IAQ) and thermal comfort in buildings along with optimized energy consumption is a challenging problem. This investigation presents a novel design for hybrid ventilation system enabled by predictive control and soft-sensors to achieve both IAQ and thermal comfort by combining predictive control with demand controlled ventilation (DCV). First, we show that the problem of maintaining IAQ, thermal comfort and optimal energy is a multi-objective optimization problem with competing objectives, and a predictive control approach is required to smartly control the system. This leads to many implementation challenges which are addressed by designing a hybrid ventilation scheme supported by predictive control and soft-sensors. The main idea of the hybrid ventilation system is to achieve thermal comfort by varying the ON/OFF times of the air conditioners to maintain the temperature within user-defined bands using a predictive control and IAQ is maintained using Healthbox 3.0, a DCV device. Furthermore, this study also designs soft-sensors by combining the Internet of Things (IoT)-based sensors with deep-learning tools. The hardware realization of the control and IoT prototype is also discussed. The proposed novel hybrid ventilation system and the soft-sensors are demonstrated in a real research laboratory, i.e., Center for Research in Automatic Control Engineering (C-RACE) located at Kalasalingam University, India. Our results show the perceived benefits of hybrid ventilation, predictive control, and soft-sensors.
