Abstract
The impact of COVID-19 has boosted growth in the takeaway and medical industries but has also generated a large amount of plastic waste. Peanut shells (PS) are produced in large quantities and are challenging to recycle in China. Co-pyrolysis of peanut shells (PS) and polypropylene (PP) is an effective method for processing plastic waste and energy mitigation. Thermogravimetric analysis was conducted on PS, PP, and their blends (PS-PP) at different heating rates (10, 20, 30 °C·min-1). The results illustrated that the co-pyrolysis process of PS-PP was divided into two distinct decomposition stages. The first stage (170-400 °C) was predominantly linked to PS decomposition. The second stage (400-520 °C) resulted from the combinations of PS and PP's thermal degradations, with the most contribution from PP degradation. With the increase in heating rate, thermogravimetric hysteresis appeared. Kinetic analysis indicated that the co-pyrolysis process reduced the individual pyrolysis activation energy, especially in the second stage, with a correlation coefficient (R2) generally maintained above 0.95. The multi-level reaction mechanism function model can effectively reveal the co-pyrolysis process mechanism. PS proved to be high-quality biomass for co-pyrolysis with PP, and all mixtures exhibited synergistic effects at a mixing ratio of 1:1 (PS1-PP1). This study accomplished effective waste utilization and optimized energy consumption. It holds significance in determining the interaction mechanism of mixed samples in the co-pyrolysis process.

Abstract
The food processing industry is one of the world's largest consumers of potable water. Agri-food wastewater systems consume about 70% of the world's fresh water and cause at least 80% of deforestation. Food wastewater is characterized by complex composition, a wide range of pollutants, and fluctuating water quality, which can cause huge environmental pollution problems if discharged directly. In recent years, food wastewater has attracted considerable attention as it is considered to have great prospects for resource recovery and reuse due to its rich residues of nutrients and low levels of harmful substances. This review explored and compared the sources and characteristics of different types of food wastewater and methods of wastewater treatment. Particular attention was paid to the different methods of resource recovery and reuse of food wastewater. The diversity of raw materials in the food industry leads to different compositional characteristics of wastewater, which determine the choice and efficiency of wastewater treatment methods. Physicochemical methods, and biological methods alone or in combination have been used for the efficient treatment of food wastewater. Current approaches for recycling and reuse of food wastewater include culture substrates, agricultural irrigation, and bio-organic fertilizers, recovery of high-value products such as proteins, lipids, biopolymers, and bioenergy to alleviate the energy crisis. Food wastewater is a promising substrate for resource recovery and reuse, and its valorization meets the current international policy requirements regarding food waste and environment protection, follows the development trend of the food industry, and is also conducive to energy conservation, emission reduction, and economic development. However, more innovative biotechnologies are necessary to advance the effectiveness of food wastewater treatment and the extent of resource recovery and valorization.

Abstract
Pyrolysis of biomass feedstocks can produce valuable biofuel, however, the final products may present excessive corrosion and poor stability due to the lack of hydrogen content. Co-pyrolysis with hydrogen-rich substances such as waste plastics may compensate for these shortcomings. In this study, the co-pyrolysis of a common biomass, i.e. distiller's grains (DG), and waste polypropylene plastic (PP) were investigated towards increasing the quantity and quality of the production of biofuel. Results from the thermogravimetric analyses showed that the reaction interval of individual pyrolysis of DG and PP was 124-471 °C and 260-461 °C, respectively. Conversely, an interaction effect between DG and PP was observed during co-pyrolysis, resulting in a slower rate of weight loss, a longer temperature range for the pyrolysis reaction, and an increase in the temperature difference between the evolution of products. Likewise, the Coats-Redfern model showed that the activation energies of DG, PP and an equal mixture of both were 42.90, 130.27 and 47.74 kJ mol-1, respectively. It thus follows that co-pyrolysis of DG and PP can effectively reduce the activation energy of the reaction system and promote the degree of pyrolysis. Synergistic effects essentially promoted the free radical reaction of the PP during co-pyrolysis, thereby reducing the activation energy of the process. Moreover, due to this synergistic effect in the co-pyrolysis of DG and PP, the ratio of elements was effectively optimized, especially the content of oxygen-containing species was reduced, and the hydrocarbon content of products was increased. These results will not only advance our understanding of the characteristics of co-pyrolysis of DG and PP, but will also support further research toward improving an efficient co-pyrolysis reactor system and the pyrolysis process itself.

Abstract
Enhancing the degradation of lignocellulosic structure is essential for the efficient use of corn stover. This study investigated the effects of using urea combined with steam explosion on the enzymatic hydrolysis and ethanol production of corn stover. The results demonstrated that 4.87% urea addition and 1.22 MPa steam pressure were optimal for ethanol production. The highest reducing sugar yield (350.12 mg/g) was increased by 116.42% (p < 0.05), and the corresponding degradation rates of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin in pretreated corn stover were increased by 40.26%, 45.89% and 53.71% compared with the untreated corn stover (p < 0.05). Moreover, the maximal sugar alcohol conversion rate was approximately 48.3%, and the ethanol yield reached 66.5%. In addition, the key functional groups in corn stover lignin under combined pretreatment were identified. These findings offer new insights into corn stover pretreatment and can help develop feasible technologies to enhance ethanol production.

Abstract
Sugarcane ethanol production generates about 360 billion liters of vinasse, a liquid effluent with an average chemical oxygen demand of 46,000 mg/L. Vinasse still contains about 11% of the original energy from sugarcane juice, but this chemical energy is diluted. This residue, usually discarded or applied in fertigation, is a suitable substrate for anaerobic digestion (AD). Although the technology is not yet widespread—only 3% of bioethanol plants used it in Brazil in the past, most discontinuing the process—the research continues. With a biomethane potential ranging from 215 to 324 L of methane produced by kilogram of organic matter in vinasse, AD could improve the energy output of sugarcane biorefineries. At the same time, the residual digestate could still be used as an agricultural amendment or for microalgal production for further stream valorization. This review presents the current technology for ethanol production from sugarcane and describes the state of the art in vinasse AD, including technological trends, through a recent patent evaluation. It also appraises the integration of vinasse AD in an ideal sugarcane biorefinery approach. It finally discusses bottlenecks and presents possible directions for technology development and widespread adoption of this simple yet powerful approach for bioresource recovery.

Abstract
The conservation of avian diversity plays a critical role in maintaining ecological balance and ecosystem function, as well as having a profound impact on human survival and livelihood. With species' continuous and rapid decline, information and intelligent technology have provided innovative knowledge about how functional biological diversity interacts with environmental changes. Especially in complex natural scenes, identifying bird species with a real-time and accurate pattern is vital to protect the ecological environment and maintain biodiversity changes. Aiming at the fine-grained problem in bird image recognition, this paper proposes a fine-grained detection neural network based on optimizing the YOLOV5 structure via a graph pyramid attention convolution operation. Firstly, the Cross Stage Partial (CSP) structure is introduced to a brand-new backbone classification network (GPA-Net) for significantly reducing the whole model's parameters. Then, the graph pyramid structure is applied to learn the bird image features of different scales, which enhances the fine-grained learning ability and embeds high-order features to reduce parameters. Thirdly, YOLOV5 with the soft non-maximum suppression (NMS) strategy is adopted to design the detector composition, improving the detection capability for small targets. Detailed experiments demonstrated that the proposed model achieves better or equivalent accuracy results, over-performing current advanced models in bird species identification, and is more stable and suitable for practical applications in biodiversity conservation.

Abstract
Anaerobic digestion technology is regarded as the most ideal technology for the treatment of a distiller in terms of environmental protection, resource utilization, and cost. However, there are some limitations to this process, the most prominent of which is microbial activity. The purpose of this paper is to provide a critical review of the microorganisms involved in the anaerobic digestion process of a distiller, with emphasis on the archaea community. The effects of operating parameters on microbial activity and process, such as pH, temperature, TAN, etc., are discussed. By understanding the activity of microorganisms, the anaerobic treatment technology of a distiller can be more mature. Aiming at the problem that anaerobic treatment of a distiller alone is not effective, the synergistic effect of different substrates is briefly discussed. In addition, the recent literature on the use of microorganisms to purify a distiller was collected in order to better purify the distiller and reduce harm. In the future, more studies are needed to elucidate the interactions between microorganisms and establish the mechanisms of microbial interactions in different environments.

Abstract
The influence of the underlying surface on the atmospheric environment over rivers and lakes is not fully understood. To improve our understanding, this study targeted the Twain-Hu Basin (THB) in central China, with a unique underlying surface comprising a dense "water network" over rivers and lakes. In this study, the Weather Research and Forecasting Model with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) was used to simulate the impact of this dense "water network" on a wintertime heavy PM2.5 pollution event in the THB. On this basis, the regulating effects of density and area of the lake groups, with centralized big lakes (CBLs) and discrete small lakes (DSLs), on PM2.5 concentrations over the underlying surface of the dense "water network" in the THB were clarified, and the relative contributions of thermal factors and water vapor factors in the atmospheric boundary layer to the variation of PM2.5 concentrations were evaluated. The results show that the underlying surface of dense "water networks" in the THB generally decreases the PM2.5 concentrations, but the influences of different lake-group types are not uniform in spatial distribution. The CBLs can reduce the PM2.5 concentrations over the lake and its surroundings by 4.90-17.68% during the day and night. The ability of DSLs in reducing PM2.5 pollution is relatively weak, with the reversed contribution between -5.63% and 1.56%. Thermal factors and water vapor-related factors are the key meteorological drivers affecting the variation of PM2.5 concentrations over the underlying surface of dense "water networks". The warming and humidification effects of such underlying surfaces contribute positively and negatively to the "purification" of air pollution, respectively. The relative contributions of thermal factors and water vapor-related factors are 52.48% and 43.91% for CBLs and 65.96% and 27.31% for DSLs, respectively. The "purification" effect of the underlying surface with a dense "water network" in the THB on regional air pollution highlights the importance of environmental protection of inland rivers and lakes in regional environmental governance. In further studies on the atmospheric environment, long-term studies are necessary, including fine measurements in terms of meteorology and the environment and more comprehensive simulations under different scenarios.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to optimize the process parameters of the anaerobic co-digestion of pig manure and rice straw to maximize methane production and system stability. In this study, batch experiments were conducted with different mixing ratios of pig manure and rice straw (1:0, 1:1, 1:5, 1:10, and 0:1), total solid concentrations (6%, 8%, 10%, 12%, and 14%), and inoculum accounts (5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%). The results show that a 1:5 mixing ratio of pig manure to rice straw, a 12% total solid content, and a 15% inoculum account yielded biogas up to 553.79 mL/g VS, which was a result of co-digestion increasing the cooperative index (CPI > 1). Likewise, the evolution of the pH and VFAs indicated that the co-digestion system was well-buffered and not easily inhibited by acidification or ammonia nitrogen. Moreover, the results of the Gompertz model's fitting showed that the cumulative methane production, delay period, effective methane production time, and methane production rate under optimal conditions were significantly superior compared to the other groups employed.

Abstract
Severe environmental pollution and disease exposure are caused by poor waste management, specifically in urban areas due to urbanization. Additionally, energy shortage has threatened almost all parts of human life in the world. To overcome this problem, a precision agriculture approach using spatial mapping based on social environmental factors and sustainability principles can be used to find the variability of sites with respect to their suitability for waste disposal and energy generation. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a system for selecting suitable areas for municipal waste disposal and energy generation based on several structured criteria as hierarchical weighted factors. The system prototype was developed and tested in a case study conducted in an Indonesian Megapolitan area. The suitability map produced by the system for waste disposal and energy generation had an accuracy of 84.3%. Furthermore, validation was carried out by ground-checking at 102 location points. A future application of the proposed system is to provide spatial data-based analysis to improve regional planning and policy-making for waste disposal and energy generation in certain areas, particularly in Indonesia.

Abstract
Based on the porous carbon material from citric acid residue, catalysts of different Ce-Mn ratios were prepared with incipient-wetness impregnation (IWI) to delve into their acetone-degrading performance and relevant mechanisms. When the Ce-Mn molar ratio is 0.8, the prepared catalyst Ce0.8-Mn/AC shows abundant and uniformly dispersed Mn and Ce particles on the surface. The content of Mn and Ce on the Ce0.8-Mn/AC surface reaches 5.64% and 0.75%, respectively. At the acetone concentration of 238 mg/m3 (100 ppm), the laws of acetone degradation in different catalysts at different catalyzing temperatures and with various oxygen concentrations were studied, and we found that the rate of acetone degradation by Ce0.8-Mn/AC can exceed 90% at 250 °C. Cerium oxide and manganese oxide are synergistic in the catalytic degradation of acetone. Adding cerium to manganese-based catalysts can increase the oxygen migration rate in the catalysts and thus raise the reduction rate of lattice oxygen in manganese oxide. The results offer new ideas and approaches for the efficient and comprehensive utilization of bio-fermentation by-products, and for the development of cheap and high degradation performance catalysts for acetone.

Abstract
The reuse of biomass waste is conducive to the recovery of resources and can solve the pollution problem caused by incineration and landfill. For this reason, the thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) was used to study the pyrolysis of the mushroom sticks (MS) and discarded meal boxes at different heating rates (10 °C·min-1, 20 °C·min-1, 30 °C·min-1). The statistical analysis showed that the factors of pyrolysis temperature and particle size had a greater effect, while the heating rate was significant. The TGA revealed that the maximum weight loss rate of the co-pyrolysis of MS and discarded meal boxes increased with the rise of the heating rate, the temperature at which the pyrolysis started and ended increased, and the thermal weight loss displayed a hysteresis phenomenon. By comparing the theoretical heat weight loss curves with the experimental curves, a synergistic effect of the co-pyrolysis process between MS and discarded meal boxes was demonstrated, and the co-pyrolysis process resulted in a reduction in the solid residue content of the products. The Coats-Redfern method was used to fit the pyrolysis process of MS and discarded meal boxes, which applied the first-order kinetic model to describe the main process of pyrolysis and obtained the reaction activation energy between 43 and 45 kJ·mol-1. The results indicated that co-pyrolysis of MS and discarded meal boxes could decrease the activation energy of the reaction, make the reaction easier, promote the degree of pyrolysis reaction, reduce the generation of pollutants, and provide a theoretical basis for the recycling and energy utilization of MS and discarded meal boxes.
