Abstract
Currently, planting selenium-rich crops using inorganic selenium such as selenate and selenite is used to address human selenium deficiency problems. In this paper, besides the above two traditional inorganic selenium speciation, we chose a new organic selenium speciation of potassium selenocyanoacetate to investigate the different effects of selenium speciation on selenium absorption, selenium transformation and cadmium antagonism via foliar application. Plantingexperiments showed that the selenium content of garlic bulbs treated with organic selenium was 1.8-3.9 times higher than that of inorganic selenium. Additionally, the absorption and transformation efficiency of organic selenium in garlic was also the highest, reaching over 95 %. Importantly, it was noteworthy that the cadmium content in bulbs treated with organic selenium was significantly lower than the Chinese food safety standard (0.2 mg/kg). Hence, this study provides an efficient organic selenium speciation which is beneficial to meet human selenium requirements and ensure safe utilization of cadmium-contaminated soils.

Abstract
Countries face exasperating and inclement climate worldwide. Food and feed security could be their paramount life objective. The study aimed to investigate the impact of selenium on the protein content and distribution in different parts of rice. For this purpose, advanced selenium biofortified breeding material developed after generations of breeding efforts was investigated at the field area, rice research institute, Chengdu, China during cropping season 2021-22. The accumulation and distribution of selenium and protein contents were observed in various fractions of selenium-enriched rice (Z3057B) and positive control (727). The correlation studies for selenium and protein quantification leads to the optimization of the breeding material and relevance in virtue. The rice fractions indicated rice embryo retains highest selenium contents, which gradually decreases in succession (other rice parts). The difference in protein content between the embryo and endosperm of Se-enriched rice is significant, while that between embryo and aleurone layer is not obvious. The selenium protein was found with molecular weight of 13.6-122.6 kDa. The protein of each molecular weight is found to bind with selenium, but the binding strength of selenium is negatively correlated with the molecular weight of protein. The 67.5% of the total selenium sticks with protein having molecular weight less than 38.8 kDa. In summary, protein with low molecular weight (13.4 kDa) binds maximum selenium and accounts for highest total protein content (40.76%).

Abstract
Although auxin has been linked to plants' responses to cadmium (Cd) stress, the exact mechanism is yet elusive. The objective of the current investigation was to determine the role and the mechanism of auxin in controlling rice's Cd accumulation. Rice roots with Cd stress have higher endogenous auxin levels, and exogenous auxin combined Cd treatment could reduce root cell wall's hemicellulose content when compared with Cd treatment alone, which in turn reduced its fixation of Cd, as well as decreased the expression of OsCd1 (a major facilitator superfamily gene), OsNRAMP1/5 (Natural Resistance-Associated Macrophage Protein 1/5), OsZIP5/9 (Zinc Transporter 5/9), and OsHMA2 (Heavy Metal ATPase 2) that participated in Cd uptake and root to shoot translocation. Furthermore, less Cd accumulated in the shoots as a result of auxin's impact in increasing the expression of OsCAL1 (Cadmium accumulation in Leaf 1), OsABCG36/OsPDR9 (G-type ATP-binding cassette transporter/Pleiotropic drug resistance 9), and OsHMA3, which were in charge of Cd efflux and sequestering into vacuoles, respectively. Additionally, auxin decreased endogenous nitric oxide (NO) levels and antioxidant enzyme activity, while treatment of a NO scavenger-cPTIO-reduced auxin's alleviatory effects. In conclusion, the rice's ability to tolerate Cd toxicity was likely increased by the auxin-accelerated cell wall Cd exclusion mechanism, a pathway that controlled by the buildup of NO.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd), a highly toxic heavy metal for crops in China, poses a significant threat to rice cultivation. It is crucial to identify the genotypes with robust resistance to heavy metals, including Cd, in rice. The experiment was conducted to examine the mitigation effect of silicon (Si) on Cd toxicity levels in Se-enriched Z3055B and non-Se-enriched G46B rice genotypes. A basal dose of Si improved the growth and the quality of rice significantly by reducing the Cd content in rice roots, stems, leaves and grains and increased the yield, biomass and selenium (Se) content of brown rice in both genotypes. Additionally, Se content in brown rice and polished rice was notably higher in Se-enriched rice than in non-Se-enriched rice, with the highest amount at 0.129 mg/kg and 0.085 mg/kg, respectively. The results demonstrated that a basal fertilizer concentration of 30 mg/kg of Si was more effective in reducing Cd transport from roots to shoots in Se-enriched rice than in non-Se-enriched rice genotypes. Therefore, it can be concluded that Se-enriched rice genotypes are a viable option for food crop production in Cd-contaminated areas.

Abstract
Heavy metal pollution has become a global problem, which affect more and more crop yields. Melatonin (MT) is widely used in plant stress resistance to alleviate the toxicity caused by heavy metals and other stresses. In this paper, the effects of exogenous 50 μM and 100 μM MT on the growth and development of naked oat seedlings under cadmium stress (25 mg L-1) were studied. The results showed that different concentrations of MT could promote the growth of naked oat seedlings under 25-mg L-1 cadmium stress. The application of exogenous melatonin could significantly increase the plant height, fresh weight, dry weight, chlorophyll, and proline contents of naked oats. MT could also reduce the contents of hydrogen peroxide, superoxide anion, and malondialdehyde in the cells of naked oat seedlings, and increase the activities of SOD, POD, and CAT. In addition, exogenous melatonin could affect the gene expression of LOX, POX, and Asmap1 in MAPK family and NAC and WRKY1 in TFS family in naked oat seedlings, thus promoting the growth and development of naked oat seedlings. In conclusion, this study is the first to demonstrate that MT is able to alleviate the negative effects to treat naked oat seedlings with cadmium stress. Therefore, melatonin has the potential to be applied in crops threatened by heavy metals.

Abstract
The threat of toxic metals to food security and human health has become a high-priority issue in recent decades. As the world’s main food crop source, the safe cultivation of rice has been the focus of much research, particularly the restoration of toxic metals in paddy fields. Therefore, in this paper, we focus on the effects of toxic metals on rice, as well as the removal or repair methods of toxic metals in paddy fields. We also provide a detailed discussion of the sources and monitoring methods of toxic metals pollution, the current toxic metal removal, and remediation methods in paddy fields. Finally, several important research issues related to toxic metals in paddy field systems are proposed for future work. The review has an important guiding role for the future of heavy metal remediation in paddy fields, safe production of rice, green ecological fish culture, and human food security and health.

Abstract
Rice and rice products are the main sources of Cd contamination in humans. The total and bioaccessible concentrations of Cd and three divalent nutrients, Mn, Cu, and Zn, in locally grown rice grains from Hunan and Guangdong Provinces in China were investigated. An in vitro physiologically based extraction test method was introduced to evaluate the bioaccessibility of the target metals in the rice grains. The mean concentrations of Cd in the rice grains were 0.245 mg/kg and 0.235 mg/kg from Hunan and Guangdong Provinces, respectively. Large variations were observed in the Cd concentrations, indicating a heterogeneous distribution of Cd contamination throughout the study areas. The bioaccessibility of Cd, Mn, and Zn in the gastrointestinal fractions was significantly lower than that in the gastric fractions. In contrast, the bioaccessibility of Cu at the intestinal phase was detected in the rice grains from both provinces. The correlation analysis showed significant relationships between total Cd concentrations and bioaccessible Cd fractions, indicating that higher total Cd in rice grains always resulted in higher bioaccessible Cd. Consistent correlations in the rice grains were observed between Zn and Mn. However, a lack of correlation was found between Cd and Zn in the current study. Risk assessment according to bioaccessible Cd would significantly reduce the exposure risk to Cd from rice consumption.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) in agricultural soils can be absorbed by wheat and transferred into the grains, risking human health. In order to find the optimal foliar treatment method to reduce Cd accumulation in wheat grain, nineteen single-factor foliar treatments and multi-factor combination treatments were used to study the effects of different foliar sprays on Cd accumulation of wheat grain. The results showed that the foliar application of ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA), selenium (Se), and sodium nitroprusside (SNP) can significantly reduce Cd concentration in wheat grains by 49.2%, 29.6%, and 28.8%, respectively, in the field. Foliar application of EDTA, Se, zinc (Zn), ascorbic acid (ASC), silicon (Si), and molybdenum (Mo) can significantly reduce Cd concentration of wheat grains by 32.3%, 32.0%, 27.7%, 27.7%, 26.3%, and 25.9%, respectively, in pot experiment. Foliar application of 2 mM EDTA and 2 mM Se exerted excellent effects on controlling the Cd accumulation of wheat grains both in pot and field experiment. Foliar application with 0.1 mM Se or 2 mM EDTA significantly reduced Cd concentrations in grains both in grain filling stage and heading + grain filling stage. Spraying at the filling stage has a better effect on reducing Cd concentration in grains than spraying at the heading stage. In addition, the relationship between Cd concentration in grains and husks was significantly positive, while the Cd concentration in grains and flag leaves was significantly negative. Our research proves that foliar spraying of Se and EDTA is feasible to reduce the Cd concentration in wheat grains, which provides technical guidance for the safe production of wheat in low-Cd-contaminated soils.

Changes in Metal Distribution, Vegetative Growth, Reactive Oxygen and Nutrient Absorption of Tagetes patula under Soil Cadmium Stress. HORTICULTURAE 2022. Abstract
Phytoremediation with hyperaccumulator plants has been recognized as a potential way for the clearing of cadmium (Cd)-contaminated soil. In this study, hyperaccumulator Tagetes patula was treated with seven concentrations of Cd, ranging from 0 to 300 mg kg−1. The Cd enrichment and nutrient contents in different organs during different growth phases were investigated. Under Cd concentrations ≤75 mg kg-1, the morphological growth of T. patula did not change significantly regardless of growth stage. However, when Cd concentration exceeded 150 mg kg−1, the morphological growth was remarkedly inhibited. The root/shoot ratio remained unchanged except for at 300 mg kg−1. In addition, Cd negatively influenced the flowering process at the concentration of 300 mg kg−1. Cd content increased significantly in Cd-treated plants. Nitrogen absorption was increased under Cd treatments, and phosphorus content was also increased under concentration ≤150 mg·kg−1. However, the potassium content in the flower was decreased under 300 mg kg−1. Furthermore, the contents of H2O2, O2− and malondialdehyde were increased during the seedling phase, especially when Cd concentration was ≥150 mg kg−1. In summary, T. patula showed a strong ability to tolerate Cd, and such ability might be explained by nutrient absorption and reactive oxygen clearness.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is a beneficial element, but only when present within its permissible range. Its hyper-accumulation in edible plant parts can cause Se toxicity. This study aimed to develop an agronomic plan for biofortification of rice with Se and reclamation of cadmium (Cd)-contaminated soil, utilizing sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) and cadmium chloride (CdCl2) as soil treatments. Biofortification was performed on two target rice varieties: genotypes 5097A/R2035 and GangYou725, in field trials by applying Cd at a concentration of 0-8 mg kg soil-1 and Se at 0-1 mg kg soil-1. Since these rice varieties have different metabolic specificity, the degree of elemental accumulation, deviations in chlorophyll concentration, activity of photosynthetic apparatus and grain yield were assessed. It was found that application of 1 mg kg-1 Se2O3 decrease Cd content and increased chlorophyll content and photosynthetic activity while grain yield was unaffected by application of the metallic trace-elements. Comparing effects at different stages, we found that the 50% heading stage was most sensitive to metal application. In sum, Se mitigates Cd toxicity, but hyperaccumulation of Se (4 mg kg-1) in polished rice was observed with Cd at 4 and 8 mg kg-1. The elevated level of Cd stress in pot experiments resulted in over-accumulation of Se in the germ and endosperm that poses serious health concerns.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) is a ubiquitous environmental pollutant, which mainly input to the aquatic environment through discharge of industrial and agricultural waste, can be a threat to human and animal health. Selenium (Se) possesses a beneficial role in protecting animals and ameliorating the toxic effects of Cd. However, the comparative antagonistic effects of different Se sources such as inorganic, organic Se and nano-form Se on Cd toxicity are still under-investigated. Hence, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the comparative of Se sources antagonism on Cd-induced nephrotoxicity via oxidative stress and selenoproteome transcription. In the present study, Cd-diet disturbed in the system balance of 5 trace elements (Zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), Iron (Fe), Se, Cd) and impaired renal function. Se sources, including nano- Se (NS), Se- yeast (SY), sodium selenite (SS) and mixed selenium (MS) significantly recovered the balance of 4 trace elements (Zn, Cu, Cd, Se) and renal impaired indexes (blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine (CREA)). Histological appearance of Cd-treated kidney indicated renal tubular epithelial vacuoles, particle degeneration and enlarged capsular space. Ultrastructure observation results illustrated that Cd-induced mitochondrial cristae reduction, membrane disappearance, and nuclear deformation. Treatment with Se sources, NS appeared a better impact on improving kidney tissues against the pathological alterations resulting from Cd administration. Meanwhile, NS reflected a significant impact on relieving Cd-induced kidney oxidative damage, and significantly restored the antioxidant defense system of the body. Our findings also showed NS ameliorated the Cd-induced downtrends expression of selenoproteome and selenoprotein synthesis related transcription factors. Overall, NS was the most effective Se source in avoiding of Cd cumulative toxicity, improving antioxidant capacity and regulating of selenoproteome transcriptome and selenoprotein synthesis related transcription factors expression, which contributes to ameliorate Cd-induced nephrotoxicity in chickens. These results demonstrated diet supplement with NS may prove to be an effective approach for alleviating Cd toxicity and minimizing Cd -induced health risk.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) is an element injurious for human health and is possibly toxic to organisms at minor concentrations. While some of other trace metallic elements have antagonistic features to it. One of them is the interaction between selenium (Se) and Cd in plant different organs. Literature review disclosed that the intake of Se to some extent can reduce the accumulation of Cd in plants, while the research on of trace metallic elements (Cd) and Se-enriched food (rice) in the living body has rarely been reported. This study intended to explore whether there was a mitigating effect of Se-enriched rice on mice poisoned with Cd. A mouse model of low-dose and high-dose Cd poisoning was established (supplemented with cadmium chloride(CdCl2·2½H20)), followed by feeding two groups (1) Se-enriched rice and (2) setting an equal amount of inorganic Se group. After that, the impact of Se-enriched rice on the antioxidant activity was evaluated. The Se-enriched diet enhanced the total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and enzyme activities of GSH peroxidase (GSH-Px) in mice livers and kidney whereas significantly decreased the malondialdehyde (MDA) contents. Moreover, the degree of physiological damage in mice with low cadmium poisoning was significantly alleviated, and the expression of antioxidant genes (Nrf-2, GPX1, TrxR2, TNF-2) was increased. In conclusion, the Se-enriched diet has a positive effect on the biological effects in mice, and it can be used as a daily diet to resist damage to the body's low Cd state and support enzymatic antioxidant systems by eliminating oxidative injury.

Abstract
Tea plants (Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze) can hyperaccumulate fluoride (F). The accumulation of F in tea leaves may induce serious health problems in tea consumers. It has been reported that selenium (Se) could reduce the accumulation of heavy metals in plants. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate whether exogenous Se could reduce F accumulation in tea plant. The results showed that Se treatment could decrease F content in tea leaves, increase F accumulation in roots, decrease the proportion of water-soluble F in tea leaves and increase the Se content. Low F levels promoted the accumulation of Se in tea plants. Se treatment could modulate F-induced oxidative injury by decreasing malondialdehyde level and increasing the activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and catalase. Moreover, Se inhibited F-induced increase in leaf iron, calcium, aluminum, leaf and root magnesium and lead contents. These results showed that Se application could decrease F content and increase Se content in tea leaves, which may be served as a novel strategy for production of healthy tea.

Abstract
Dietary consumption of selenium-rich agro-food is an effective way to avoid selenium deficiency diseases, however, over consumption of selenium-rich agro-food will result in potential risk of selenosis and problems with associated metals. In this study, we measured the concentrations of selenium and its associated metals in 2756 common and 4894 selenium-rich agro-food samples in 10 regions of China. We found that selenium-rich rice, flour, edible fungi and algae, meat, and tea contain higher levels of associated metals than other selenium-rich agro-food samples. Increasing the consumption of selenium-rich agro-food could make the actual intakes (AIs) of selenium for all population to meet respective recommended daily intakes (RDIs). Benefit-risk assessment results indicated that increasing the consumption of selenium-rich agro-food make AIs of selenium for all populations meet RDIs, chromium intakes for people under 18 years old exceed provisional tolerated daily intake (PTDIs), while arsenic and cadmium intakes are close to PTDIs. The main dietary contributors of selenium, chromium, arsenic and cadmium were meat, edible fungi and algae, rice, and rice, respectively. The study supported the consumption of selenium-rich agro-food for effective selenium supplement, but also emphasized potential risk from associated metals in selenium-rich agro-food, especially chromium.

Abstract
Produced water (PW), a wastewater resulting from hydraulic fracturing and oil and gas production, has been utilized in arid regions for irrigation purposes and potentially presents a new water source for crop irrigation in areas of increasing water scarcity. However, there is a potential for both synthetic and geogenic contaminants in these waters to accumulate in irrigated food crops. This study assessed how water treatment technologies targeted at removal of salinity (i.e., total dissolved solids) and organic chemical content (i.e., dissolved organic carbon) from PW to achieve agricultural irrigation standards altered the impact of inorganic contaminants and nutrient uptake on two salt-tolerant food crops, sunflower (Helianthus annuus) and wheat (Triticum aestivum). The impacts of the treatment technologies on inorganic contaminant loadings in the irrigated soils were also assessed. Treatment technologies to improve PW quality decreased the adverse impacts on plant health; however, plant health was more affected by dilutions of PW than by the treatment technologies employed. Phenotypically, plants irrigated with 90% dilution (low) treatment groups, regardless of treatment technology, were comparable to controls; however, plants watered with high proportions (50%) of raw or treated PW displayed stunted growth, with reduced height and leaf area, and sunflower seed saw 100% yield loss. Although phenotypically similar, plants of the low treatment groups exhibited changes in the ionome, illustrating the influence of PW on plant uptake, translocation, and accumulation of metals, salts, and micronutrients. In addition, bioavailability of metals and nutrients was impacted by the unique and complex PW matrix: bioconcentration factors traditionally used to evaluate risk may therefore over or underestimate accumulation.

Abstract
Herein, selenium-containing polysaccharide from Spirulina platensis (Se-SPP) was prepared and its structural characteristics and protective role against Cd-induced toxicity in vivo and in vitro were investigated. Se-SPP was alkali-extracted from selenium-containing Spirulina platensis which was cultured in Zarrouk medium supplemented with Na2SeO3. The contents of carbohydrate, protein, uronic acid, sulfate and elements (including Se, C, H, O, N, and S) as well as the monosaccharide composition, molecular weight, surface morphology and FT-IR spectra of Se-SPP was compared to that of selenium-free polysaccharide (SPP). The results revealed that SPP and Se-SPP were both high-molecular-weight heteropolysaccharide with similar molecular weight and monosaccharide composition but significantly different selenium content, indicating that the covalently-bonding of a small amount of selenium did not destroy the original structure of polysaccharide. Furthermore, CdCl2 was utilized to build Cd-intoxicated cells model in vitro and rats model in vivo respectively. Then, the protective effect of Se-SPP against cadmium-induced toxicity was assessed. The results demonstrated that Se-SPP treatment provided significant protection against Cd-induced toxicity, which was superior compared to that of SPP or Na2SeO3 alone. The enhancement of protective role may be affected by the covalently-bonding of selenium to polysaccharide.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The element selenium (Se) deficiency is thought to be a global human health problem, which could disperse by daily-supplement from Se-rich food. Increasing the accumulation of Se in rice grain is an approach matched to these nutrient demands. Nonetheless, Se is shown to be essential but also toxic to plants, with a narrow margin between deficiency and toxicity. Notably, the regulatory mechanism balancing the accumulation and tolerance of Se in Se-rich rice plants remains unknown. RESULTS In this study, we investigated the phenotypical, physiological, and biochemical alterations of Se-rich rice in the exposure to a variety of Se applications. Results showed that the Se-rich rice was able to accumulate more abundance of Se from the root under a low Se environment comparing to the Se-free rice. Besides, excessive Se led to phytotoxic effects on Se-rich rice plants by inducing chlorosis and dwarfness, decreasing the contents of antioxidant, and exacerbating oxidative stresses. Furthermore, both phosphate transporter OsPT2 and sulfate transporters OsSultr1;2 may contribute to the uptake of selenate in rice. CONCLUSIONS Se-rich red rice is more sensitive to exogenous application of Se, while and the most effective application of Se in roots of Se-rich rice was reached in 20 μM. Our findings present a direct way to evaluate the toxic effects of Se-rich rice in the Se contaminated field. Conclusively, some long-term field trial strategies are suggested to be included in the evaluation of risks and benefits within various field managements.
