Recent Progress in Manufacturing Techniques of Printed and Flexible Sensors: A Review

A New Approach to Carbon Nanotube Filament Nanostructuring for Additive Manufacturing

A new technique of additive prototyping filament volumetric nanostructuring based on the high-speed mechanical mixing of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) copolymer granules and single-walled carbon nanotube (CNT) powder (without prior dispersion in solvents) is considered. The morphological spectra of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of nanostructured filament slice surfaces were obtained and characterized with the original mathematical simulation. The relations of structural changes in the "ingredient-matrix" polymer system with dielectric and mechanical properties of the ABS-based filaments were established. The supplementation of 1.5 mass.% of CNT powder to the ABS filament composition leads to the tensile strength increasing from 36 ± 2 to 42 ± 2 MPa. It is shown that the greater the average biharmonic amplitude and the morphological spectrum localization radius of the slice surfaces' SEM images, the lower the electrical resistance of the corresponding nanostructured filaments. The possibility of carbon nanotube-modified filament functional layers forming using the extrusion additive prototyping technique (FFF) on the surface of plasma-chemically modified PET substrates (for the creation of load cell elements) is experimentally demonstrated.

The Role of Interdigitated Electrodes in Printed and Flexible Electronics

Flexible electronics, also referred to as printable electronics, represent an interesting technology for implementing electronic circuits via depositing electronic devices onto flexible substrates, boosting their possible applications. Among all flexible electronics, interdigitated electrodes (IDEs) are currently being used for different sensor applications since they offer significant benefits beyond their functionality as capacitors, like the generation of high output voltage, fewer fabrication steps, convenience of application of sensitive coatings, material imaging capability and a potential of spectroscopy measurements via electrical excitation frequency variation. This review examines the role of IDEs in printed and flexible electronics since they are progressively being incorporated into a myriad of applications, envisaging that the growth pattern will continue in the next generations of flexible circuits to come.

Printable and flexible integrated sensing systems for wireless healthcare

The rapid development of wearable sensing devices and artificial intelligence has enabled portable and wireless tracking of human health, fulfilling the promise of digitalized healthcare applications. To achieve versatile design and integration of multi-functional modules including sensors and data transmission units onto various flexible platforms, printable technologies emerged as some of the most promising strategies. This review first introduces the commonly utilized printing technologies, followed by discussion of the printable ink formulations and flexible substrates to ensure reliable device fabrication and system integration. The advances of printable sensors for body status monitoring are then discussed. Moreover, the integration of wireless data transmission via printable approaches is also presented. Finally, the challenges in achieving printable sensing devices and wireless integrated systems with competitive performances are considered, so as to realize their practical applications for personalized healthcare.

Novel Deliberately Sensitive and Selective Tetrahydrozoline Voltammetric Sensors Integrated with a Copper Oxide Nanoparticle/Zeolite Platform

The present study introduced a novel disposable screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs) modified with copper oxide/zeolite nanostructures for eco-friendly selective differential pulse voltammetric quantification of tetrahydrozoline (THZ) in eyedrop samples and biological fluids. Modification of the electrode matrix with copper oxide nanoparticles/zeolite nanostructures (CuONPs/ZY) with their effective and synergistic electrocatalytic activity enhanced the electrode performance against electrooxidation of THZ at 0.960 V in BR at pH 9.0 with a diffusion-controlled reaction mechanism. The tentative oxidation mechanism based on molecular orbital calculations postulates the oxidation of THZ molecules through oxidation of a nitrogen atom five-membered ring and the participation of two electrons/protons in the electrode reaction. Linear calibration curves were illustrated within a wide THZ concentration range from 0.24 to 57.2 μg mL-1 recording a limit of detection (LOD) value of 0.0799 μg mL-1. The CuONPs/ZY/SPEs exhibited improved performance compared with the sole reported THZ sensor-based gold film-plated carbon paste electrodes, in addition to their high reproducibility of fabrication and measurement and prolonged shelf lifetime. Tetrahydrozoline was successfully assayed in the presence of excipients, degradation products, and chloramphenicol. The presented voltammetric sensor can be considered as an eco-friendly and reliable analytical approach for monitoring THZ residues in eye drop samples and biological fluids with high recovery compared with the official pharmacopeial analytical protocol. The presented sensors were assessed according to an EcoScale tool and also compared with the reported THZ sensor.

Recent developments and applications of surface enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy in safety detection of fruits and vegetables

This article reviewed the latest research progress of Surface-enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) in the security detection of fruits and vegetables in recent years, especially in three aspects: pesticide residues, microbial toxin contamination and harmful microorganism infection. The binding mechanism and application potential of SERS detection materials (including universal type and special type) and carrier materials (namely rigid and flexible materials) were discussed. Finally, the application prospect of SERS in fruit and vegetable safety detection was explored, and the problems to be solved and development trends were put forward. The poor stability and reproducibility of SERS substrates make it difficult for practical applications. It is necessary to continuously optimize SERS substrates and develop small and portable Raman spectroscopy analyzers. In the future, SERS technology is expected to play an important role in human health, food safety and economy.

Advances in Printed Electronic Textiles

Electronic textiles (e-textiles) have emerged as a revolutionary solution for personalized healthcare, enabling the continuous collection and communication of diverse physiological parameters when seamlessly integrated with the human body. Among various methods employed to create wearable e-textiles, printing offers unparalleled flexibility and comfort, seamlessly integrating wearables into garments. This has spurred growing research interest in printed e-textiles, due to their vast design versatility, material options, fabrication techniques, and wide-ranging applications. Here, a comprehensive overview of the crucial considerations in fabricating printed e-textiles is provided, encompassing the selection of conductive materials and substrates, as well as the essential pre- and post-treatments involved. Furthermore, the diverse printing techniques and the specific requirements are discussed, highlighting the advantages and limitations of each method. Additionally, the multitude of wearable applications made possible by printed e-textiles is explored, such as their integration as various sensors, supercapacitors, and heated garments. Finally, a forward-looking perspective is provided, discussing future prospects and emerging trends in the realm of printed wearable e-textiles. As advancements in materials science, printing technologies, and design innovation continue to unfold, the transformative potential of printed e-textiles in healthcare and beyond is poised to revolutionize the way wearable technology interacts and benefits.

Rapid integration of screen-printed electrodes into thermoplastic organ-on-a-chip devices for real-time monitoring of trans-endothelial electrical resistance

Trans-endothelial electrical resistance (TEER) is one of the most widely used indicators to quantify the barrier integrity of endothelial layers. Over the last decade, the integration of TEER sensors into organ-on-a-chip (OOC) platforms has gained increasing interest for its efficient and effective measurement of TEER in OOCs. To date, microfabricated electrodes or direct insertion of wires has been used to integrate TEER sensors into OOCs, with each method having advantages and disadvantages. In this study, we developed a TEER-SPE chip consisting of carbon-based screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) embedded in a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-based multi-layered microfluidic device with a porous poly(ethylene terephthalate) membrane in-between. As proof of concept, we demonstrated the successful cultures of hCMEC/D3 cells and the formation of confluent monolayers in the TEER-SPE chip and obtained TEER measurements for 4 days. Additionally, the TEER-SPE chip could detect changes in the barrier integrity due to shear stress or an inflammatory cytokine (i.e., tumor necrosis factor-α). The novel approach enables a low-cost and facile fabrication of carbon-based SPEs on PMMA substrates and the subsequent assembly of PMMA layers for rapid prototyping. Being cost-effective and cleanroom-free, our method lowers the existing logistical and technical barriers presenting itself as another step forward to the broader adoption of OOCs with TEER measurement capability.

Recent Progress in Printed Photonic Devices: A Brief Review of Materials, Devices, and Applications

Printing electronics incorporates several significant technologies, such as semiconductor devices produced by various printing techniques on flexible substrates. With the growing interest in printed electronic devices, new technologies have been developed to make novel devices with inexpensive and large-area printing techniques. This review article focuses on the most recent developments in printed photonic devices. Photonics and optoelectronic systems may now be built utilizing materials with specific optical properties and 3D designs achieved through additive printing. Optical and architected materials that can be printed in their entirety are among the most promising future research topics, as are platforms for multi-material processing and printing technologies that can print enormous volumes at a high resolution while also maintaining a high throughput. Significant advances in innovative printable materials create new opportunities for functional devices to act efficiently, such as wearable sensors, integrated optoelectronics, and consumer electronics. This article provides an overview of printable materials, printing methods, and the uses of printed electronic devices.

Non-Destructive Screening of Sodium Metabisulfite Residue on Shrimp by SERS with Copy Paper Loaded with AgNP

In order to prompt the appearance of the shrimp color, sodium metabisulfite is frequently added in shrimp processing, which is, however, prohibited in China and many other countries. This study aimed to establish a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) method for screening sodium metabisulfite residues on shrimp surfaces, in a non-destructive manner. The analysis was carried out using a portable Raman spectrometer jointly with copy paper loaded with silver nanoparticles as the substrate material. The SERS response of sodium metabisulfite gives two fingerprint peaks at 620 (strong) and 927 (medium) cm^-1, respectively. This enabled unambiguous confirmation of the targeted chemical. The sensitivity of the SERS detection method was determined to be 0.1 mg/mL, which was equal to residual sodium metabisulfite on the shrimp surface at 0.31 mg/kg. The quantitative relationship between the 620 cm^-1 peak intensities and the concentrations of sodium metabisulfite was established. The linear fitting equation was y = 2375x + 8714 with R² = 0.985. Reaching an ideal balance in simplicity, sensitivity, and selectivity, this study demonstrates that the proposed method is ideally suitable for in-site and non-destructive screening of sodium metabisulfite residues in seafood.

Recent advances in inkjet-printing technologies for flexible/wearable electronics

The rapid development of flexible/wearable electronics requires novel fabricating strategies. Among the state-of-the-art techniques, inkjet printing has aroused considerable interest due to the possibility of large-scale fabricating flexible electronic devices with good reliability, high time efficiency, a low manufacturing cost, and so on. In this review, based on the working principle, recent advances in the inkjet printing technology in the field of flexible/wearable electronics are summarized, including flexible supercapacitors, transistors, sensors, thermoelectric generators, wearable fabric, and for radio frequency identification. In addition, some current challenges and future opportunities in this area are also addressed. We hope this review article can give positive suggestions to the researchers in the area of flexible electronics.

Superficial and Inkjet Scalable Printed Sensors Integrated with Iron Oxide and Reduced Graphene Oxide for Sensitive Voltammetric Determination of Lurasidone

The present work demonstrated the fabrication and the electrochemical characterization of novel printed electrochemical sensors integrated with an innovative nanosensing platform based on the synergic electrocatalytic effect of iron oxide nanoparticles (FeONPs) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) for precise voltammetric determination of the antipsychotic drug lurasidone hydrochloride (LUH). The features of the electrode surface fabricated using the ordinary inkjet printer were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Among different ink formulations, integration of the printing ink with the ratio 15 mg FeONPs and 20 mg rGO was found to be the most appropriate for sensitive quantification of LUH in biological fluids and pharmaceutical formulations in the presence of LUH degradation products. Under the optimized experimental and electroanalytical parameters, the recorded square-wave voltammograms were correlated to LUH within the linear concentration ranging from 50 to 2150 ng mL^-1 with detection limit and limit of quantification values of 15.64 and 47.39 ng mL^-1, respectively. Based on the cyclic voltammograms recorded for LUH at different scan rates, the electrode reaction was assumed to be a diffusion reaction mechanism accompanied by the transfer of two electrons/protons through the oxidation of the five-membered ring nitrogen atom as assumed by the molecular orbital calculations carried out on the LUH molecule. The C _max of LUH and the efficiency of the fabricated sensors enabled their clinical application for monitoring LUH in human biological fluids and pharmaceutical formulations in the presence of degradants for diverse quality control applications and green chemistry analysis.

Flexible Wearable Sensors in Medical Monitoring

The popularity of health concepts and the wave of digitalization have driven the innovation of sensors in the medical field. Such continual development has made sensors progress in the direction of safety, flexibility, and intelligence for continuous monitoring of vital signs, which holds considerable promise for changing the way humans live and even treat diseases. To this end, flexible wearable devices with high performance, such as high sensitivity, high stability, and excellent biodegradability, have attracted strong interest from scientists. Herein, a review of flexible wearable sensors for temperature, heart rate, human motion, respiratory rate, glucose, and pH is highlighted. In addition, engineering issues are also presented, focusing on material selection, sensor fabrication, and power supply. Finally, potential challenges facing current technology and future directions of wearable sensors are also discussed.

Smart Electronic Textile-Based Wearable Supercapacitors

Electronic textiles (e-textiles) have drawn significant attention from the scientific and engineering community as lightweight and comfortable next-generation wearable devices due to their ability to interface with the human body, and continuously monitor, collect, and communicate various physiological parameters. However, one of the major challenges for the commercialization and further growth of e-textiles is the lack of compatible power supply units. Thin and flexible supercapacitors (SCs), among various energy storage systems, are gaining consideration due to their salient features including excellent lifetime, lightweight, and high-power density. Textile-based SCs are thus an exciting energy storage solution to power smart gadgets integrated into clothing. Here, materials, fabrications, and characterization strategies for textile-based SCs are reviewed. The recent progress of textile-based SCs is then summarized in terms of their electrochemical performances, followed by the discussion on key parameters for their wearable electronics applications, including washability, flexibility, and scalability. Finally, the perspectives on their research and technological prospects to facilitate an essential step towards moving from laboratory-based flexible and wearable SCs to industrial-scale mass production are presented.

Toward intelligent food packaging of biosensor and film substrate for monitoring foodborne microorganisms: A review of recent advancements

Microorganisms in food do harms to human. They can cause serious adverse reactions and sometimes even death. So it is an urgent matter to find an effective method to control them. The research of intelligent- biosensor packaging is in the ascendant in recent years, which is mainly promoted by reflecting on food safety and reducing resource waste. Intelligent biosensor-packaging is an instant and efficient intelligent packaging technology, which can directly and scientifically manifest the quality of food without complex operation. In this review, the purposes of providing relevant information on intelligent biosensor-packaging are reviewed, such as types of biosensors for monitoring foodborne microorganism, the suitable material for intelligent biosensor-packaging and design and fabrication of intelligent biosensor-packaging. The potential of intelligent biosensor-packaging in the detection of foodborne microorganisms is emphasized. The challenges and directions of the intelligent biosensor-packaging in the detection of foodborne pathogens are discussed. With the development of science and technology in the future, the intelligent biosensor-packaging should be commercialized in a real sense. And it is expected that commercial products can be manufactured in the future, which will provide a far-reaching approach in food safety and food prevention. Ramie Fabric Treated with Carboxymethylcellulose and Laser Engraved for Strain and Humidity Sensing

Wearable fabric sensors have attracted enormous attention due to their huge potential in human health and activity monitoring, human-machine interaction and the Internet of Things (IoT). Among natural fabrics, bast fabric has the advantage of high strength, good resilience and excellent permeability. Laser engraving, as a high throughput, patternable and mask-free method, was demonstrated to fabricate fabric sensors. In this work, we developed a simplified, cost-effective and environmentally friendly method for engraving ramie fabric (a kind of bast fabric) directly by laser under an ambient atmosphere to prepare strain and humidity sensors. We used carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) to pretreat ramie fabric before laser engraving and gained laser-carbonized ramie fabrics (LCRF) with high conductivity (65 Ω sq^-1) and good permeability. The strain and humidity sensors had high sensitivity and good flexibility, which can be used for human health and activity monitoring.

Picosecond Laser-Ablated Nanoparticles Loaded Filter Paper for SERS-Based Trace Detection of Thiram, 1,3,5-Trinitroperhydro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX), and Nile Blue

Recently, filter paper (FP)-based surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates have stimulated significant attention owing to their promising advantages such as being low-cost, easy to handle, and practically suitable for real-field applications in comparison to the solid-based substrates. Herein, a simple and versatile approach of laser-ablation in liquid for the fabrication of silver (Ag)-gold (Au) alloy nanoparticles (NPs). Next, the optimization of flexible base substrate (sandpaper, printing paper, and FP) and the FP the soaking time (5−60 min) was studied. Further, the optimized FP with 30 min-soaked SERS sensors were exploited to detect minuscule concentrations of pesticide (thiram-50 nM), dye (Nile blue-5 nM), and an explosive (RDX-1,3,5-Trinitroperhydro-1,3,5-triazine-100 nM) molecule. Interestingly, a prominent SERS effect was observed from the Au NPs exhibiting satisfactory reproducibility in the SERS signals over ~1 cm2 area for all of the molecules inspected with enhancement factors of ~105 and relative standard deviation values of <15%. Furthermore, traces of pesticide residues on the surface of a banana and RDX on the glass slide were swabbed with the optimized FP substrate and successfully recorded the SERS spectra using a portable Raman spectrometer. This signifies the great potential application of such low-cost, flexible substrates in the future real-life fields.

Challenges, Prospects, and Emerging Applications of Inkjet-Printed Electronics: A Chemist's Point of View

Driven by the development of new functional inks, inkjet-printed electronics has achieved several milestones upon moving from the integration of simple electronic elements (e.g., temperature and pressure sensors, RFID antennas, etc.) to high-tech applications (e.g. in optoelectronics, energy storage and harvesting, medical diagnosis). Currently, inkjet printing techniques are limited by spatial resolution higher than several micrometers, which sets a redhibitorythreshold for miniaturization and for many applications that require the controlled organization of constituents at the nanometer scale. In this Review, we present the physico-chemical concepts and the equipment constraints underpinning the resolution limit of inkjet printing and describe the contributions from molecular, supramolecular, and nanomaterials-based approaches for their circumvention. Based on these considerations, we propose future trajectories for improving inkjet-printing resolution that will be driven and supported by breakthroughs coming from chemistry. An Automated Room Temperature Flip-Chip Mounting Process for Hybrid Printed Electronics

Printing technology and mounting technology enable the novel field of hybrid printed electronics. To establish a hybrid printed system, one challenge is that the applied mounting process meets the requirements of functional inks and substrates. One of the most common requirements is low process temperature. Many functional inks and substrates cannot withstand the high temperatures required by traditional mounting processes. In this work, a standardized interconnection and an automated bump-less flip-chip mounting process using a room temperature curing conductive adhesive are realised. With the proposed process, the conductive adhesive selected for the standardized interconnection can be dispensed uniformly, despite its increase of viscosity already during pot time. Electrical and mechanical performance of the interconnection are characterized by four terminal resistance measurement and shear test. The herein proposed automated process allows for fabrication of hybrid printed devices in larger batch sizes than manual assembly processes used beforehand and thus, more comprehensive evaluation of device parameters. This is successfully demonstrated in a first application, a novel hybrid printed security device. The room temperature mounting process eliminates any potentially damaging thermal influence on the performance of the printed circuits that might result from other assembly techniques like soldering.

Fabrication and electrical properties of printed three-dimensional integrated carbon nanotube PMOS inverters on flexible substrates

The low resolution of current printing technology (usually 10-100 μm) limits the number of printed thin film transistors (TFTs) per processable area, resulting in the low integration of printed circuits. In this work, we developed a three-dimensional (3D) integration technology to increase the integration of printed TFTs and firstly achieved printed 3D single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) PMOS inverter arrays on the flexible substrates. The flexible 3D PMOS inverter consists of a bottom-gate SWCNT TFT (i.e., a driving TFT) and a top-gate SWCNT TFT (i.e., a load TFT). Printed SWCNT TFTs exhibited good electrical properties with high carrier mobility (up to 9.53 cm² V^-1 s^-1), high I_on/I_off ratio (10⁵-10⁶), low hysteresis, and small subthreshold swing (SS) (70-80 mV dec^-1). As-prepared 3D PMOS inverters exhibited rail-to-rail voltage output characteristics, high voltage gain (10) at a low operating voltage (V_DD < 1 V), and good mechanical flexibility. Furthermore, the printed 3D PMOS inverters could be utilized to detect ammonia gases, exhibiting satisfactory stability and recovery rate. It is crucial for realizing high-density, multi-functional printed carbon-based electronic devices and circuits for wearable electronics and the Internet of Things (IoT).

The status and perspectives of nanostructured materials and fabrication processes for wearable piezoresistive sensors

The wearable sensors have attracted a growing interest in different markets, including health, fitness, gaming, and entertainment, due to their outstanding characteristics of convenience, simplicity, accuracy, speed, and competitive price. The development of different types of wearable sensors was only possible due to advances in smart nanostructured materials with properties to detect changes in temperature, touch, pressure, movement, and humidity. Among the various sensing nanomaterials used in wearable sensors, the piezoresistive type has been extensively investigated and their potential have been demonstrated for different applications. In this review article, the current status and challenges of nanomaterials and fabrication processes for wearable piezoresistive sensors are presented in three parts. The first part focuses on the different types of sensing nanomaterials, namely, zero-dimensional (0D), one-dimensional (1D), two-dimensional (2D), and three-dimensional (3D) piezoresistive nanomaterials. Then, in second part, their fabrication processes and integration are discussed. Finally, the last part presents examples of wearable piezoresistive sensors and their applications.

Morphological Characteristics of Drug-Eluting Biodegradable Polymeric Thin Films Developed on the Surface of Intraocular Lenses by Three Techniques: A Comparative Study

Background

Cataract surgery is a very popular operation that requires a postoperative period of frequent instillation of antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Modified drug-eluting intraocular lenses (IOLs) may eliminate the need for eye drops after surgery.

Aim

The purpose of this study is to compare the morphological characteristics of dexamethasone eluting biodegradable polymeric thin films developed on the surface of commercially available IOLs by three different methods.

Method

This experimental study was conducted between May and August of 2021 in the Lab for Thin Films - Nanobiomaterials - Nanosystems & Nanometrology (LTFN) of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. A mixture of two organic polymers [Poly (D, L-lactide-co-glycolide)(PLGA), lactide: glycolide (75:25) and Polycaprolactone (PCL)] and dexamethasone was prepared and then deposited on the surface of three-piece IOLs by spin coating, by spray coating, and by gravure printing. The modified IOLs were sterilized with the use of ultraviolet (UV) radiation and plasma treatment. Their structural properties were studied with the use of atomic force microscopy (AFM).

Results

Spin coating and gravure printing produced uniform thin films on the surface of the IOLs which were not damaged during the sterilization process. Spray coating led to the partial coating of the surface of the IOLs; the thin films underwent alterations following plasma treatment.

Conclusions

Thin films developed by spin coating and gravure printing on IOLs demonstrate the desired morphological characteristics that make them suitable candidates for further research.

Pad-Printing as a Fabrication Process for Flexible and Compact Multilayer Circuits

The purpose of this paper is to present a newly developed process for the fabrication of multilayer circuits based on the pad-printing technique. Even though the maturity level, in terms of accuracy, substrate type and print size of several printing industrial processes is relatively high, the fabrication complexity of multilayer printed electronics remains relatively high. Due to its versatility, the pad-printing technique allows the superposition of printed conductive and insulating layers. Compared to other printing processes, its main advantage is the ability to print on various substrates even on flexible, curved or irregular surfaces. Silver-based inks were used for the formulation of conductive layers while UV inks were employed to fulfil the functionality of the insulating layers. To demonstrate the functionality of the pad-printing results, a multilayer test pattern has been designed and printed on Kapton^®. Furthermore, to demonstrate the efficacy of this approach, a multilayer circuit composed of three stacked layers has been designed and printed on various substrates including Kapton^®, paper and wood. This electronic circuit controls an array of LEDs through the manipulation of a two-key capacitive touch sensor. This study, allowed us to define recommendations for the different parameters leading to high printing quality. We expect a long-term beneficial impact of this study towards a low-cost, fast, and environmental-friendly production of printed electronics.

A Review on Printed Electronics: Fabrication Methods, Inks, Substrates, Applications and Environmental Impacts

Innovations in industrial automation, information and communication technology (ICT), renewable energy as well as monitoring and sensing fields have been paving the way for smart devices, which can acquire and convey information to the Internet. Since there is an ever-increasing demand for large yet affordable production volumes for such devices, printed electronics has been attracting attention of both industry and academia. In order to understand the potential and future prospects of the printed electronics, the present paper summarizes the basic principles and conventional approaches while providing the recent progresses in the fabrication and material technologies, applications and environmental impacts.

Biomedical Applications of Electromagnetic Detection: A Brief Review

This paper presents a review on the biomedical applications of electromagnetic detection in recent years. First of all, the thermal, non-thermal, and cumulative thermal effects of electromagnetic field on organism and their biological mechanisms are introduced. According to the electromagnetic biological theory, the main parameters affecting electromagnetic biological effects are frequency and intensity. This review subsequently makes a brief review about the related biomedical application of electromagnetic detection and biosensors using frequency as a clue, such as health monitoring, food preservation, and disease treatment. In addition, electromagnetic detection in combination with machine learning (ML) technology has been used in clinical diagnosis because of its powerful feature extraction capabilities. Therefore, the relevant research involving the application of ML technology to electromagnetic medical images are summarized. Finally, the future development to electromagnetic detection for biomedical applications are presented.

Wearable patch delivery system for artificial pancreas health diagnostic-therapeutic application: A review

The advanced stimuli-responsive approaches for on-demand drug delivery systems have received tremendous attention as they have great potential to be integrated with sensing and multi-functional electronics on a flexible and stretchable single platform (all-in-one concept) in order to develop skin-integration with close-loop sensation for personalized diagnostic and therapeutic application. The wearable patch pumps have evolved from reservoir-based to matrix patch and drug-in-adhesive (single-layer or multi-layer) type. In this review, we presented the basic requirements of an artificial pancreas, surveyed the design and technologies used in commercial patch pumps available on the market and provided general information about the latest wearable patch pump. We summarized the various advanced delivery strategies with their mechanisms that have been developed to date and representative examples. Mechanical, electrical, light, thermal, acoustic and glucose-responsive approaches on patch form have been successfully utilized in the controllable transdermal drug delivery manner. We highlighted key challenges associated with wearable transdermal delivery systems, their research direction and future development trends.

Intelligent Packaging for Real-Time Monitoring of Food-Quality: Current and Future Developments

Food packaging encompasses the topical role of preserving food, hence, extending the shelf-life, while ensuring the highest quality and safety along the production chain as well as during storage. Intelligent food packaging further develops the functions of traditional packages by introducing the capability of continuously monitoring food quality during the whole chain to assess and reduce the insurgence of food-borne disease and food waste. To this purpose, several sensing systems based on different food quality indicators have been proposed in recent years, but commercial applications remain a challenge. This review provides a critical summary of responsive systems employed in the real-time monitoring of food quality and preservation state. First, food quality indicators are briefly presented, and subsequently, their exploitation to fabricate intelligent packaging based on responsive materials is discussed. Finally, current challenges and future trends are reviewed to highlight the importance of concentrating efforts on developing new functional solutions.

Optimizing Aerosol Jet Printing Process of Platinum Ink for High-Resolution Conductive Microstructures on Ceramic and Polymer Substrates

Printing nano-ink with platinum nanoparticles to generate conductive microstructures for electronics on different types of substrates has gained increasing interest in recent years. To solve the problem of the low conductivity of platinum (Pt) nano-ink, we synthesized chemically pure Pt nanoparticles with sizes of 18.2 ± 9.0 nm by spark discharge method. A low toxic solvent, ethylene glycol with water, was used to ensure the aggregation stability of Pt nanoparticles. Polyvinylpyrrolidone was used as an adhesive additive and binder in the nano-ink. Narrow and conductive Pt lines were generated by aerosol jet printing technology. The resistivity of the Pt lines sintered at 750 °C on alumina substrate was found to exceed the bulk Pt by about 13%. Moreover, the Pt film fabricated on polymer substrates has demonstrated excellent mechanical flexibility in terms of twisting tests.
