Biomedical Applications of an Ultra-Sensitive Surface Plasmon Resonance Biosensor Based on Smart MXene Quantum Dots (SMQDs)

Harmonic Generation up to Fifth Order from Al/Au/CuS Nanoparticle Films

Dual heterostructures integrating noble-metal and copper chalcogenide nanoparticles have attracted a great deal of attention in nonlinear optics, because coupling of their localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) substantially enhances light-matter interactions through local-field effects. Previously, enhanced cascaded third-harmonic generation was demonstrated in Au/CuS heterostructures mediated by harmonically coupled surface plasmon resonances. This suggests a promising approach for extending nonlinear enhancement to higher harmonics by adding an additional nanoparticulate material with higher-frequency harmonic resonances to the hybrid films. Here we report the first observation of enhanced cascaded fourth- and fifth-harmonic generation in Al/Au/CuS driven by coupled LSPRs at the fundamental (1050 nm), second harmonic (525 nm), and third harmonic (350 nm) of the pump frequency. An analytical model based on incoherent dipole-dipole interactions among plasmonic nanoparticles accounts for the observed enhancements. The results suggest a novel design for efficiently generating higher harmonics in resonant plasmonic structures by means of multiple sum-frequency cascades.

Review of Biosensors Based on Plasmonic-Enhanced Processes in the Metallic and Meta-Material-Supported Nanostructures

Surface plasmons, continuous and cumulative electron vibrations confined to metal-dielectric interfaces, play a pivotal role in aggregating optical fields and energies on nanostructures. This confinement exploits the intrinsic subwavelength nature of their spatial profile, significantly enhancing light-matter interactions. Metals, semiconductors, and 2D materials exhibit plasmonic resonances at diverse wavelengths, spanning from ultraviolet (UV) to far infrared, dictated by their unique properties and structures. Surface plasmons offer a platform for various light-matter interaction mechanisms, capitalizing on the orders-of-magnitude enhancement of the electromagnetic field within plasmonic structures. This enhancement has been substantiated through theoretical, computational, and experimental studies. In this comprehensive review, we delve into the plasmon-enhanced processes on metallic and metamaterial-based sensors, considering factors such as geometrical influences, resonating wavelengths, chemical properties, and computational methods. Our exploration extends to practical applications, encompassing localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR)-based planar waveguides, polymer-based biochip sensors, and LSPR-based fiber sensors. Ultimately, we aim to provide insights and guidelines for the development of next-generation, high-performance plasmonic technological devices.

Recent Progress in Prompt Molecular Detection of Exosomes Using CRISPR/Cas and Microfluidic-Assisted Approaches Toward Smart Cancer Diagnosis and Analysis

Exosomes are essential indicators of molecular mechanisms involved in interacting with cancer cells and the tumor environment. As nanostructures based on lipids and nucleic acids, exosomes provide a communication pathway for information transfer by transporting biomolecules from the target cell to other cells. Importantly, these extracellular vesicles are released into the bloodstream by the most invasive cells, i. e., cancer cells; in this way, they could be considered a promising specific biomarker for cancer diagnosis. In this matter, CRISPR-Cas systems and microfluidic approaches could be considered practical tools for cancer diagnosis and understanding cancer biology. CRISPR-Cas systems, as a genome editing approach, provide a way to inactivate or even remove a target gene from the cell without affecting intracellular mechanisms. These practical systems provide vital information about the factors involved in cancer development that could lead to more effective cancer treatment. Meanwhile, microfluidic approaches can also significantly benefit cancer research due to their proper sensitivity, high throughput, low material consumption, low cost, and advanced spatial and temporal control. Thereby, employing CRISPR-Cas- and microfluidics-based approaches toward exosome monitoring could be considered a valuable source of information for cancer therapy and diagnosis. This review assesses the recent progress in these promising diagnosis approaches toward accurate cancer therapy and in-depth study of cancer cell behavior.

Bioresource Polymer Composite for Energy Generation and Storage: Developments and Trends

The ever-growing demand of human society for clean and reliable energy sources spurred a substantial academic interest in exploring the potential of biological resources for developing energy generation and storage systems. As a result, alternative energy sources are needed in populous developing countries to compensate for energy deficits in an environmentally sustainable manner. This review aims to evaluate and summarize the recent progress in bio-based polymer composites (PCs) for energy generation and storage. The articulated review provides an overview of energy storage systems, e. g., supercapacitors and batteries, and discusses the future possibilities of various solar cells (SCs), using both past research progress and possible future developments as a basis for discussion. These studies examine systematic and sequential advances in different generations of SCs. Developing novel PCs that are efficient, stable, and cost-effective is of utmost importance. In addition, the current state of high-performance equipment for each of the technologies is evaluated in detail. We also discuss the prospects, future trends, and opportunities regarding using bioresources for energy generation and storage, as well as the development of low-cost and efficient PCs for SCs.

Advancing Sensitivity in Guided-Wave Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensor through Integration of 2D BlueP/MoS2 Hybrid Layers

The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) signal, generated from the Kretschmann configuration, has been developed as an effective detection technology in chemical and biological sensors. The sensitivity of SPR signals to changes in the surrounding media makes it a valuable tool, as even a slight variation in refractive index can cause a significant change in SPR signals, such as phase, intensity, and resonance angle. However, the detection of ultralow changes in refractive index, which occur in chemical reactions or biological actions, remains a challenge for conventional SPR sensors due to their limited sensitivity. To overcome this limitation, we theoretically propose a novel guided-wave SPR (GWSPR) configuration coated with a few-layer blue phosphorene (blueP)/MoS2 hybrid structure. This configuration aims to enhance the electric field and subsequently achieve a significant improvement in sensitivity. The results of our study demonstrate that the proposed blueP/MoS2-based GWSPR sensor exhibits a high sensitivity of 290°/RIU, which represents an impressive enhancement of approximately 82.4% compared to the conventional Au-based SPR sensor. This advancement addresses the challenge of detecting ultralow changes in refractive index and offers significant potential for enhancing the performance of chemical and biological sensors.

Exploring the potential and safety of quantum dots in allergy diagnostics

Biomedical investigations in nanotherapeutics and nanomedicine have recently intensified in pursuit of new therapies with improved efficacy. Quantum dots (QDs) are promising nanomaterials that possess a wide array of advantageous properties, including electronic properties, optical properties, and engineered biocompatibility under physiological conditions. Due to these characteristics, QDs are mainly used for biomedical labeling and theranostic (therapeutic-diagnostic) agents. QDs can be functionalized with ligands to facilitate their interaction with the immune system, specific IgE, and effector cell receptors. However, undesirable side effects such as hypersensitivity and toxicity may occur, requiring further assessment. This review systematically summarizes the potential uses of QDs in the allergy field. An overview of the definition and development of QDs is provided, along with the applications of QDs in allergy studies, including the detection of allergen-specific IgE (sIgE), food allergens, and sIgE in cellular tests. The potential treatment of allergies with QDs is also described, highlighting the toxicity and biocompatibility of these nanodevices. Finally, we discuss the current findings on the immunotoxicity of QDs. Several favorable points regarding the use of QDs for allergy diagnosis and treatment are noted.

Recent Advances in MXene Quantum Dots: A Platform with Unique Properties for General-Purpose Functional Materials with Novel Biomedical Applications

Developing new, high-performance materials is a prerequisite for technological advancement. In comparison to bulk materials, quantum dots have a number of good advantages due to their small size, high surface area, and quantum dimensions. Quantum dots, two-dimensional materials with lateral dimensions less than 100 nm, can be generated by the quantum confinement effect. Mxene quantum dots (MQDs) retain some of their two-dimensional characteristics. They also exhibit novel physicochemical properties, including enhanced dispersibility in aqueous and nonaqueous phases, modification or doping capabilities, and photoluminescence. MQDs, due to their unique and diverse properties, have been receiving a great deal of attention as new members of the Mxene group and wide use for biotechnology, bioimaging, optoelectronics, catalysis, cancer therapy, etc. This review aims to provide an overview of the synthesis of MQDs, their optical properties, and their cancer therapy applications. MQDs exhibit remarkable photothermal and photodynamic features and can be suitable for bioimaging. In addition to obtaining bioimaging, photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) effects simultaneously, MQDs have high biocompatibility in vitro and in vivo, providing evidence of their potential clinical utility. Herein, recent developments and future prospects concerning MQDs biomedical applications are discussed.

Recent Advances in Quantum Dot-Based Lateral Flow Immunoassays for the Rapid, Point-of-Care Diagnosis of COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has spurred demand for efficient and rapid diagnostic tools that can be deployed at point of care to quickly identify infected individuals. Existing detection methods are time consuming and they lack sensitivity. Point-of-care testing (POCT) has emerged as a promising alternative due to its user-friendliness, rapidity, and high specificity and sensitivity. Such tests can be conveniently conducted at the patient's bedside. Immunodiagnostic methods that offer the rapid identification of positive cases are urgently required. Quantum dots (QDs), known for their multimodal properties, have shown potential in terms of combating or inhibiting the COVID-19 virus. When coupled with specific antibodies, QDs enable the highly sensitive detection of viral antigens in patient samples. Conventional lateral flow immunoassays (LFAs) have been widely used for diagnostic testing due to their simplicity, low cost, and portability. However, they often lack the sensitivity required to accurately detect low viral loads. Quantum dot (QD)-based lateral flow immunoassays have emerged as a promising alternative, offering significant advancements in sensitivity and specificity. Moreover, the lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) method, which fulfils POCT standards, has gained popularity in diagnosing COVID-19. This review focuses on recent advancements in QD-based LFIA for rapid POCT COVID-19 diagnosis. Strategies to enhance sensitivity using QDs are explored, and the underlying principles of LFIA are elucidated. The benefits of using the QD-based LFIA as a POCT method are highlighted, and its published performance in COVID-19 diagnostics is examined. Overall, the integration of quantum dots with LFIA holds immense promise in terms of revolutionizing COVID-19 detection, treatment, and prevention, offering a convenient and effective approach to combat the pandemic.

Bioresource-Functionalized Quantum Dots for Energy Generation and Storage: Recent Advances and Feature Perspective

The exponential increase in global energy demand in daily life prompts us to search for a bioresource for energy production and storage. Therefore, in developing countries with large populations, there is a need for alternative energy resources to compensate for the energy deficit in an environmentally friendly way and to be independent in their energy demands. The objective of this review article is to compile and evaluate the progress in the development of quantum dots (QDs) for energy generation and storage. Therefore, this article discusses the energy scenario by presenting the basic concepts and advances of various solar cells, providing an overview of energy storage systems (supercapacitors and batteries), and highlighting the research progress to date and future opportunities. This exploratory study will examine the systematic and sequential advances in all three generations of solar cells, namely perovskite solar cells, dye-sensitized solar cells, Si cells, and thin-film solar cells. The discussion will focus on the development of novel QDs that are economical, efficient, and stable. In addition, the current status of high-performance devices for each technology will be discussed in detail. Finally, the prospects, opportunities for improvement, and future trends in the development of cost-effective and efficient QDs for solar cells and storage from biological resources will be highlighted.
