Novel Optical Fiber-Based Structures for Plasmonics Sensors

Potential of plasmonics and nanoscale light-matter interactions for the next generation of optical neural interfaces

Within the realm of optical neural interfaces, the exploration of plasmonic resonances to interact with neural cells has captured increasing attention among the neuroscience community. The interplay of light with conduction electrons in nanometer-sized metallic nanostructures can induce plasmonic resonances, showcasing a versatile capability to both sense and trigger cellular events. We describe the perspective of generating propagating or localized surface plasmon polaritons on the tip of an optical neural implant, widening the possibility for neuroscience labs to explore the potential of plasmonic neural interfaces.

Optical Fibre-Based Sensors-An Assessment of Current Innovations

Optical fibre sensors are an essential subset of optical fibre technology, designed specifically for sensing and measuring several physical parameters. These sensors offer unique advantages over traditional sensors, making them gradually more valuable in a wide range of applications. They can detect extremely small variations in the physical parameters they are designed to measure, such as analytes in the case of biosensing. This high sensitivity allows them to detect subtle variations in temperature, pressure, strain, the refractive index of analytes, vibration, and other environmental factors with exceptional accuracy. Moreover, these sensors enable remote sensing capabilities. Since light signals are used to carry information, the sensing elements can be placed at distant or inaccessible sites and still communicate the data back to the central monitoring system without signal degradation. In recent times, different attractive configurations and approaches have been proposed to enhance the sensitivity of the optical fibre-based sensor and are briefly explained in this review. However, we believe that the choice of optical fibre sensor configuration should be designated based on the specific application. As these sensors continue to evolve and improve, they will play an increasingly vital role in critical monitoring and control applications across various industries.

One Material-Opposite Triboelectrification: Molecular Engineering Regulated Triboelectrification on Silica Surface to Enhance TENG Efficiency

Molecular engineering is a unique methodology to take advantage of the electrochemical characteristics of materials that are used in energy-harvesting devices. Particularly in triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) studies, molecular grafting on dielectric metal oxide surfaces can be regarded as a feasible way to alter the surface charge density that directly affects the charge potential of triboelectric layers. Herein, we develop a feasible methodology to synthesize organic-inorganic hybrid structures with tunable triboelectric features. Different types of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) with electron-donating and withdrawing groups have been used to modify metal oxide (MO) surfaces and to modify their charge density on the surface. All the synthetic routes for hybrid material production have been clearly shown and the formation of covalent bonds on the MO's surface has been confirmed by XPS. The obtained hybrid structures were applied as dopants to distinct polymer matrices with various ratios and fiberization processes were carried out to the prepare opposite triboelectric layers. The formation of the fibers was analyzed by SEM, while their surface morphology and physicochemical features have been measured by AFM and a drop shape analyzer. The triboelectric charge potential of each layer after doping and their contribution to the TENG device's parameters have been investigated. For each triboelectric layer, the best-performing tribopositive and tribonegative material combination was separately determined and then these opposite layers were used to fabricate TENG with the highest efficiency. A comparison of the device parameters with the reference indicated that the best tribopositive material gave rise to a 40% increase in the output voltage and produced 231 V, whereas the best tribonegative one led to a 33.3% rise in voltage and generated 220 V. In addition, the best device collected ~83% more charge than the reference device and came up with 250 V that corresponds to 51.5% performance enhancement. This approach paved the way by addressing the issue of how molecular engineering can be used to manipulate the triboelectric features of the same materials.

Nanoparticles loaded with pharmacologically active plant-derived natural products: Biomedical applications and toxicity

Pharmacologically active natural products have played a significant role in the history of drug development. They have acted as sources of therapeutic drugs for various diseases such as cancer and infectious diseases. However, most natural products suffer from poor water solubility and low bioavailability, limiting their clinical applications. The rapid development of nanotechnology has opened up new directions for applying natural products and numerous studies have explored the biomedical applications of nanomaterials loaded with natural products. This review covers the recent research on applying plant-derived natural products (PDNPs) nanomaterials, including nanomedicines loaded with flavonoids, non-flavonoid polyphenols, alkaloids, and quinones, especially their use in treating various diseases. Furthermore, some drugs derived from natural products can be toxic to the body, so the toxicity of them is discussed. This comprehensive review includes fundamental discoveries and exploratory advances in natural product-loaded nanomaterials that may be helpful for future clinical development.

Plasmon-Exciton Coupling Effect in Nanostructured Arrays for Optical Signal Amplification and SARS-CoV-2 DNA Sensing

A surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-enhanced optical signal using a nanoslit array and acridine orange (AO) dye system at a flexible poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) substrate was achieved in this work and demonstrated a simple sensing scheme to directly detect SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid via DNA hybridization. A simple nanoimprinting pattern transfer technique was introduced to form uniform reproducible nanoslit arrays where the dimensions of the slit array were controlled by the thickness of the gold film. The plasmon-exciton coupling effect on the optical enhancement of different dye molecules, i.e., AO, propidium iodide (PI), or dihydroethidium (DHE) attached to the nanoslit surfaces, was examined thoroughly by measuring the surface reflection and fluorescence imaging. The results indicate that the best overlap of the plasmon resonance wavelength to the excitation spectrum of AO presented the largest optical enhancement (∼57×) compared to the signal at flat gold surfaces. Based on this finding, a sensitive assay for detecting DNA hybridization was generated using the interaction of the selected SARS-CoV-2 ssDNA and dsDNA with AO to trigger the metachromatic behavior of the dye at the nanoarray surfaces. We found strong optical signal amplification on the formation of acridine-ssDNA complexes and a quenched signal upon hybridization to the complementary target DNA (ct-DNA) along with a blue shift in the fluorescence of AO-dsDNAs. A quantitative evaluation of the ct-DNA concentration in a range of 100-0.08 nM using both the reflection and emission imaging signals demonstrated two linear regimes with a lowest detection limit of 0.21 nM. The sensing method showed high sensitivity and distinguished signals from 1-, 2-, and 3-base mismatched DNA targets, as well as high stability and reusability. This approach toward enhancing optical signal for DNA sensing offers promise in a general, rapid, and direct vision detection method for nucleic acid analytes.

Novel Wearable Optical Sensors for Vital Health Monitoring Systems-A Review

Wearable sensors are pioneering devices to monitor health issues that allow the constant monitoring of physical and biological parameters. The immunity towards electromagnetic interference, miniaturization, detection of nano-volumes, integration with fiber, high sensitivity, low cost, usable in harsh environments and corrosion-resistant have made optical wearable sensor an emerging sensing technology in the recent year. This review presents the progress made in the development of novel wearable optical sensors for vital health monitoring systems. The details of different substrates, sensing platforms, and biofluids used for the detection of target molecules are discussed in detail. Wearable technologies could increase the quality of health monitoring systems at a nominal cost and enable continuous and early disease diagnosis. Various optical sensing principles, including surface-enhanced Raman scattering, colorimetric, fluorescence, plasmonic, photoplethysmography, and interferometric-based sensors, are discussed in detail for health monitoring applications. The performance of optical wearable sensors utilizing two-dimensional materials is also discussed. Future challenges associated with the development of optical wearable sensors for point-of-care applications and clinical diagnosis have been thoroughly discussed.
